The ratio of the cross sections for the transversely and longitudinally virtual photon polarizations, $σ^{γ^{*}p}_{L/T}$, at high photon-hadron energy scattering is studied. I investigate the relationship between the gluon distribution obtained using the color dipole model and standard gluons obtained from the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution and the Altarelli-Martinelli equations. It is shown that the color dipole bounds are dependent on the gluon distribution behavior. This behavior is considered by the expansion and Laplace transform methods. Numerical calculations and comparison with the color dipole model (CDM) bounds can indicate the range of validity of this method at small dipole sizes, $r\sim 1/Q{\ll}1/Q_{s}$.
We present the first evaluation of the color dipole diffraction slope from the data on diffractive photo- and electroproduction of vector mesons. The energy and dipole size dependence of the found dipole diffraction slope are consistent with the color dipole gBFKL dynamics.
The prediction of FL(x,Q2)=0.27F2(x,Q2) in the color-dipole picture based on color-transparency and transverse-size reduction, is consistent with the experimental results from HERA.
We present the first evaluation of color dipole cross section from experimental data on diffractive photo- and electroproduction of vector mesons. The dipole-size and energy dependence of the found dipole cross section is consistent with expectations from the BFKL dynamics.
Within the Color Glass formalism, we construct the wavefunction of a high energy onium in the BFKL and large-N_c approximations, and demonstrate the equivalence with the corresponding result in the Color Dipole picture. We propose a simple factorization formula for the elastic scattering between two non-saturated ``color glasses'' in the center-of-mass frame. This is valid up to energies which are high enough to allow for a study of the onset of unitarization via multiple pomeron exchanges. When applied to the high energy onium-onium scattering, this formula reduces to the Glauber-like scatter…
Instead of starting from a theoretically motivated form of the color dipole cross section in the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering, we start with a parametrization of the deep inelastic structure function for electromagnetic scattering with protons, and then extract the color dipole cross section. Using the parametrizations of $F_2(ξ=x \ {\rm or}\ W^2,Q^2)$ by Donnachie-Landshoff and Block et al., we find the dipole cross section from an approximate form of the presumed dipole cross section convoluted with the perturbative photon wave function for virtual photon splitting into a colo…
We show that the recently developed Hamiltonian theory for high energy evolution in QCD in the dilute regime and in the presence of Bremsstrahlung is consistent with the color dipole picture in the limit where the number of colors N_c is large. The color dipoles are quark-antiquark pairs which can radiate arbitrarily many soft gluons, and the evolution consists in the splitting of any such a dipole into two. We construct the color glass weight function of an onium as a superposition of color dipoles, each represented by a pair of Wilson lines. We show that the action of the Bremsstrahlung Hami…
A dipole-dipole scattering amplitude is calculated exactly in the first two orders of perturbation theory. This amplitude is an analytic function of the relative energy and the dipoles' sizes. The cross section of the dipole-dipole scattering approaches the high-energy BFKL asymptotics starting from a relatively large rapidity $\sim 5$.
We present nonlinear (NL) and higher twist (HT) corrections to the color dipole model (CDM) bounds at low values of $x$ and $Q^{2}$ using the parameterization method. Consistency between the bounds at this region describe that a transition from the linear to the nonlinear behavior is dependence on the behavior of the gluon distribution function. The parameters in the color dipole model are comparable with the color dipole bounds at low values of $Q^{2}$. Consequently, the obtained reduced cross sections at low and moderate $Q^{2}$ values due to the NL+HT effects show a good agreement with the …
The small-$x_B$ deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the non-linear evolution of Wilson-line operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the BK equation for the evolution of color dipoles. I discuss recent calculation of the next-to-leading order evolution of color dipoles in QCD and ${\cal N}=4$ SYM.
In this contribution, we present a study of the coherent and incoherent nuclear DVCS process in the small-$x$ regime within the color dipole formalism. Predictions for the nuclear DVCS cross section at photon level in the collider kinematics are presented.
We discuss two aspects of the color dipole picture of high energy photon-proton scattering. First we present bounds on various ratios of deep inelastic structure functions resulting from the dipole picture that, together with the measured data, can be used to restrict the kinematical range of its applicability. The second issue that we address is the choice of energy variable in the dipole-proton cross section.
We determine the diffractive scattering amplitude of a color-dipole on a nucleon using a non-perturbative model of QCD which contains only parameters taken from low-energy physics. This allows to relate specific features of the confinement mechanisms with diffractive electro-production processes and structure functions. The agreement with phenomenological data is satisfactory.
We investigate the mass range of the quark-antiquark fluctuations of the photon that are active in producing the total photoabsorption cross section in the color dipole picture, emphasizing the notion of color transparency and saturation. We consider the implications of measurements at future extensions of the available electron-proton-scattering energy.
We investigate new contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment induced by colored scalars. As an example, we evaluate contributions coming from the color octet, weak doublet scalar, accommodated within a modified Minimal Flavor Violating framework. These flavor non-diagonal couplings of the color octet scalar might account for the $A_{CP} (D^0 \to K^- K^+) - A_{CP} (D^0 \to π^+ π^-)$ asymmetry on the tree level. Using these charm asymmetry constrained couplings, we calculate two-loop contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment and find that they are of the same order as the exp…
Being reformulated in the color dipole basis of small-x QCD Adler's theorem establishes a connection between perturbative and non-perturbative descriptions of DIS and quantifies the effect of non-perturbative dynamics on would-be-perturbative observables. In particular, it provides a quantitative measure of the non-perturbative influence on the longitudinal structure function in charged current DIS and imposes stringent constraints on non-perturbative parameters of color dipole models. Our analysis calls for new experimental tests of Adler's theorem in diffractive neutrino scattering.
In this work we estimate the heavy quark production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at LHC energies using the color dipole formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Nuclear effects are considered in the computation of the total cross sections and rapidity distributions for scattering on protons and nuclei.
We give a brief representation of the theoretical results from the color dipole picture, covering the total photoabsorption cross section, high-energy $J/ψ$ photoproduction with respect to recent experimental data from the LHCb Collaboration at CERN, and ultra-high energy neutrino scattering, relevant for the ICE-CUBE experiment.
Using the high energy color dipole formalism, we study the coherent and incoherent nuclear DVCS process in the small-x regime. We consider simple models for the elementary dipole-hadron scattering amplitude that captures main features of the dependence on atomic number A, on energy and on momentum transfer t. Using the obtained amplitudes we make predictions for the nuclear DVCS cross section at photon level in the collider kinematics.
We review the recent progress in the theory of diffractive DIS, focusing on predictions of strong breaking of the Ingelman-Schlein-Regge factorization and the related breaking of the GLDAP evolution for the diffractive structure function.
At high center of mass energies, hadroproduction of heavy quarks can be expressed in terms of the same color dipole cross section as low Bjorken-x deep inelastic scattering. We show analytically that at leading order, the dipole formulation is equivalent to the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism of the conventional parton model. In phenomenological application, we employ a parameterization of the dipole cross section which also includes higher order and saturation effects, thereby going beyond the parton model. Numerical calculations in the dipole approach agree well with experimental data on open c…
We study the DVCS amplitude within the color dipole approach. The light-cone wave function of a real photon is evaluated in the instanton vacuum model. Our parameter free calculations are able to describe H1 data, both the absolute values and the $t$-dependences, at medium-high values of $Q^{2}$. The $Q^{2}$ dependence is found to be sensitive to the choice of the phenomenological cross section fitted to DIS data.
We show the role played by QCD evolution and skewedness effects in the DVCS cross section at large $Q^2$ within the color dipole description of the process at photon level. The dipole cross section is given by the saturation model, which can be improved by DGLAP evolution at high photon virtualities. We investigate both possibilities as well as the off-forward effect through a simple phenomenological parametrisation. The results are compared to the recent ZEUS DVCS data.
We report on the results obtained in the study of the parton saturation effects, taken into account through the multiscattering Glauber-Mueller approach, applied to the Drell-Yan (DY) process described in the color dipole picture. As a main result, one shows that those effects play an important role in the estimates of the DY differential cross section atRHIC energies.
We study photoabsorption reaction and real Compton scattering (RCS) within the color dipole model. We rely on a photon wave function derived in the instanton vacuum model, and on the energy dependent phenomenological elastic dipole amplitude. Data for the photoabsorption cross section at high energies agree with our parameter free calculations. We also provide predictions for the differential RCS cross section. Although no data for small angle Compton scattering are available so far, this process can be measured in ultra-peripheral hadronic and nuclear collisions at the LHC.
In the kinematical region where the center of mass energy is much larger than all other scales, the Drell-Yan process can be formulated in the target rest frame in terms of the same color dipole cross section as low Bjorken-x deep inelastic scattering. Since the mechanisms for heavy dilepton production appear very different in the dipole approach and in the conventional parton model, one may wonder whether these two formulations really represent the same physics. We perform a comparison of numerical calculations in the color dipole approach with calculations in the next-to-leading order parton…
We compute the onium-onium scattering amplitude at fixed impact parameter in the framework of the perturbative QCD dipole model. Relying on the conformal properties of the dipole cascade and of the elementary dipole-dipole scattering amplitude, we obtain an exact result for this onium-onium scattering amplitude, which is proved to be identical to the BFKL result, and which is frame invariant. The asymptotic expression for this amplitude at fixed impact parameter agrees with previous numerical simulations.
We show that the duality symmetry of the BFKL equation can be interpreted as a symmetry under rotation of the BFKL Kernel in the transverse space from s-channel (color dipole model) to t-channel (reggeized gluon formulation). We argue that the duality symmetry holds also in the non-forward case due to a very special structure of the non-forward BFKL Kernel, which can be written as a sum of three forward BFKL Kernels. The duality symmetry is established by identifying the dual coordinates with the transverse coordinates of a non-diagonal dipole scattered off the target.
Based upon the color-dipole picture, we provide closed analytic expressions for the longitudinal and the transverse photoabsorption cross sections at low values of the Bjorken variable of x<0.1. We compare with the experimental data for the longitudinal-to-transverse ratio of the (virtual) photoabsorption cross section and with our previous fit to the experimental data for the total photoabsorption cross section. Scaling in terms of the low-x scaling variable eta(W^2,Q^2) is analyzed in terms of the reduced cross section of deep inelastic scattering.
We develop the light-cone color dipole description of highly asymmetric diffractive interactions of left-handed and right-handed electroweak bosons. We identify the origin and estimate the strength of the left-right asymmetry effect in terms of the light-cone wave functions. We report an evaluation of the small-x neutrino-nucleon DIS structure functions xF_3 and 2xF_1 and present comparison with experimental data.
In this presentation, we obtain the corresponding universal function to the diffractive process and show the cross section exhibits the geometrical scaling. It is observed the diffractive theory according to the color dipole approach at small-$x$ is a convenient framework that reveals the color transparency and the saturation phenomena. Also we calculate the contribution of heavy quark productions in the diffractive cross section for high energy that is determined by the small size dipole configuration. The ratio of the diffractive cross section to the total cross section in the electron-proto…
We discuss the role of $c \bar c g$-Fock states in the diffractive photoproduction of $J/ψ$-mesons. We build on our earlier description of the process in the color-dipole approach, where we took into account the rescattering of $c \bar c$ pairs using a Glauber-Gribov form of the dipole-nucleus amplitude. We compare the results of our calculations to recent data on the photoproduction of $J/ψ$ by the ALICE and LHCb collaborations.
The small-$x$ deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the non-linear evolution of Wilson-line operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the BK equation for the evolution of color dipoles. In the next-to-leading order the BK equation gets contributions from quark and gluon loops as well as from the tree gluon diagrams with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. We calculate the gluon contribution to small-x evolution of Wilson lines (the quark part was obtained earlier).
We study the diffractive photo- and leptoproductions of $J / ψ$ and $ψ'$ on the proton, and examine the validity of the small-size color dipole approximation to the production of radially excited heavy quarkonium. The dipole model predicts a small ratio of $ψ'$ to $J / ψ$ photoproduction cross sections, which does not agree with experimental data. We show that this discrepancy originates from a large transverse size of $ψ'$ which makes the convergence of the transverse size expansion questionable, and the calculation without the dipole approximation turns out to be consistent with the data. Pr…
We evaluate the unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton starting from a parametrization of the color dipole cross section including DGLAP evolution and saturation effects. To this end, we perform the Fourier-Bessel transform of $σ(x,r)/α(r)$. At large transverse momentum of gluons we match the so-obtained distribution to the logarithmic derivative of the collinear gluon distribution. We check our approach by calculating the proton structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ finding good agreement with HERA data.
We summarize recent work on low-x deep inelastic scattering. The generalized vector dominance/color-dipole picture (GVD/CDP) implies a scaling behavior for $σ_{γ^* p} (W^2, Q^2)\cong σ_{γ^* p}(η)$, with $η= (Q^2 + m^2_0)/Λ^2 (W^2)$ and yields an excellent representation of the experimental results on $σ_{γ^* p}(η)$.
We investigate the Drell-Yan transverse momentum distribution in the framework of the color dipole approach. Special attention is paid to parton saturation effects at high energies. Predictions at LHC energies ($\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV) are given and extrapolated down to ISR energies ($\sqrt{s}=62$ GeV). Unitarity corrections are implemented through the multiple scattering Glauber-Mueller approach and are compared with predictions of the BGBK saturation model.
Starting from the phenomenologically successful color dipole representation of the diffractive structure function, we identify the dominant contribution to the diffractive cross section at small beta. The beta dependence is calculated taking advantage of the Regge factorization properties of the hard mechanism which drives the dependence on the diffractive mass. We impose the unitarity constraints on the $x_\Pom$-dependence and comment on the screening corrections to $F_{2p}$.
We discuss applications of the color dipole approach to hard processes on nuclei. We focus on the relation to k_t--factorisation and the role of a nuclear unintegrated gluon distribution in single-- and two-- particle inclusive spectra in γ^*A and pA collisions. Linear k_t factorisation is broken for a wide class of observables, which we exemplify on the case of heavy quark p_t--spectra.
We develop the color dipole phenomenology of diffractive photo- and electroproduction $γ^{*}\,N\rightarrow V(V')\,N$ of light vector mesons ($V(1S) = ϕ^0, ω^0, ρ^0$) and their radial excitations ($V'(2S) = ϕ', ω', ρ'$). The node of the radial wave function of the $2S$ states in conjunction with the energy dependence of the color dipole cross section is shown to lead to a strikingly different $Q^2$ and $ν$ dependence of diffractive production of the $V(1S)$ and $V'(2S)$ vector mesons. We discuss the restoration of flavor symmetry and universality properties of production of different vector mes…
We study the hard color dipole-nucleon cross section within perturbative QCD and discuss its relation to observables in diffractive leptoproduction of heavy quarkonium. The dipole cross section calculated with the unintegrated gluon density of the nucleon substantially differs from the well-known perturbative form $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ for $b > 0.3$fm, where $b$ is the transverse separation of the dipole. We show the measured ratio of $ψ'$ to $J / ψ$ photoproduction cross sections constrains the dipole cross section at intermediate $b$, and in fact excludes the simple $σ_{dip} \sim b^2$ behavior.…
We present a detailed study of open heavy flavor production in high-energy $pp$ collisions at the LHC in the color dipole framework. The transverse momentum distributions of produced $b$-jets, accounting for the jet energy loss, as well as produced open charm $D$ and bottom $B$ mesons in distinct rapidity intervals relevant for LHC measurements are computed. The dipole model results for the differential $b$-jet production cross section are compared to the recent ATLAS and CMS data while the results for $D$ and $B$ mesons production cross sections -- to the corresponding LHCb data. Several mode…
We investigate the exclusive photoproduction of $J/ψ$-mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions in the color dipole approach. We first test a number of dipole cross sections fitted to inclusive $F_2$-data against the total cross section of exclusive $J/ψ$-production on the free nucleon. We then use the color-dipole formulation of Glauber-Gribov theory to calculate the diffractive amplitude on the nuclear target. The real part of the free nucleon amplitude is taken into account consistent with the rules of Glauber theory. We compare our results to recent published and preliminary data on e…
We argue that the process gamma +A \to J/psi + gap + X at large momentum transfer provides a quick and effective way to test onset of a novel perturbative QCD regime of strong absorption for the interaction of small dipoles at the collider energies. We find that already the first heavy ion run at the LHC will allow to study this reaction with sufficient statistics via ultraperipheral collisions hence probing the interaction of q\bar q dipoles of sizes ~ 0.2 fm with nuclear media down to x ~ 10^{-5}.
Recently Kovner and Lublinsky proposed a set of equations which can be viewed as dual to JIMWLK evolution. We show that these dual equations have a natural dipole-like structure, as conjectured by Kovner and Lublinsky. In the high energy large N_c limit these evolution equations reduce to equations previously derived in the dipole model. We also show that the dual evolution kernel is scheme dependent, although its action on the weight functional describing a high energy state gives a unique result.
We compute the onium-onium scattering amplitude at fixed impact parameter in the framework of the perturbative QCD dipole model. Relying on conformal properties of the dipole cascade and of the elementary dipole-dipole scattering amplitude, we obtain an exact result for this onium-onium scattering amplitude, which is proven to be identical to the BFKL result, and which exhibits the frame invariance of the calculation. The asymptotic expression for this amplitude and for the dipole distribution in an onium at fixed impact parameter agree with previous numerical simulations. We show how it is po…
We study the influence of unitarity corrections on the Drell-Yan transverse momentum distribution within the color dipole approach. These unitarity corrections are implemented through the multiple scattering Glauber-Mueller approach, which is contrasted with a phenomenological saturation model. The process is analyzed for the center of mass energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV) and of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV). In addition, the results are extrapolated down to current energies of proton-proton collisions, where non-asymptotic correc…
We compute the next-to-leading order corrections to soft-gluon radiation differentially in the one-emission phase space. We show that their contribution to the evolution of color dipoles can be obtained in a modified subtraction scheme, such that both one- and two-emission terms are amenable to Monte-Carlo integration. The two-loop cusp anomalous dimension is recovered naturally upon integration over the full phase space. We present two independent implementations of the new algorithm in the two event generators Pythia and Sherpa, and we compare the resulting fully differential simulation to t…
We calculate the centrality dependence for coherent photoproduction of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies within the impact parameter dependent saturated color dipole model. By using the large equivalent photon fluxes, we present the differential cross section of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ produced by coherent photonuclear in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. The numerical results demonstrate that our calculation are agree with $J/ψ$ data in peripheral heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies.
Forward Drell-Yan process at the LHC probes the proton structure at very small Bjorken-$x$ and moderate hard scales. In this kinematical domain higher twist effects may be significant and introduce sizeable corrections to the standard leading twist description. We study the forward Drell-Yan process beyond the leading twist approximation within the color dipole model framework that incorporates multiple scattering effects. We derive the Mellin representation of the forward Drell-Yan impact factors for fully differential cross-sections. These results combined with the color dipole cross-section…
The small-$x$ deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the non-linear evolution of Wilson-lines operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the BK equation for the evolution of color dipoles. In the NLO the nonlinear equation gets contributions from quark and gluon loops. In this paper I calculate the quark-loop contribution to small-x evolution of Wilson lines in the NLO. It turns out that there are no new operators at the one-loop level - just as at the tree level, the high-energy scattering can be described in terms of Wilson lines. In additio…
An extensive phenomenological study of the Drell-Yan (DY) process in $pp$ collisions at various energies is performed in the color dipole framework. Besides previously studied $γ^*$ production we have also included the $Z^0$ contribution relevant at large dilepton invariant masses. We investigate the DY cross section differential in invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum of the dilepton pair in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC. We consider three different phenomenological models for the dipole cross section and found a reasonable agreement with the available data. As a further test of…
If the c-quark has an anomalous color-electric dipole moment (CEDM), it may serve as a new source of CP violation. The strength of such a CP violation depends on the size of the CEDM, d'_c. We propose two effective ways of testing it from the large sample of psi'->J/psi+pi(+)+pi(-) at the Beijing Spectrometer, and the obtained result, |d'_c|<3X10^{-14} e cm (95% C.L.), gives the first experimentally determined upper bound on the CEDM of the c quark.
The scaling in $σ_{γ^*p}$ cross sections (for $Q^2/W^2 << 1$) in terms of the scaling variable $η= (Q^2 + m^2_0)/Λ^2 (W^2)$ is interpreted in the generalized vector dominance/color-dipole picture (GVD/CDP). The quantity $Λ^2 (W^2)$ is identified as the average gluon transverse momentum absorbed by the $q \bar q$ state, $<\vec l^{~2}> = (1/6) Λ^2 (W^2)$. At any $Q^2$, for $W^2 \to \infty$,the cross sections for virtual and real photons became universal, $σ_{γ^*p}(W^2,Q^2)/σ_{γp}(W^2) \to 1$.
We show that the geometric scaling of the dipole cross section can be explained using standard DGLAP perturbative evolution. The DGLAP improved saturation model due to the Laplace transforms method is considered at LO and NNLO approximations from the experimental data by relying on a Froissart-bounded parametrization of $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})$. These results are comparable with Golec-Biernat-W$\ddot{\mathrm{u}}$sthoff (GBW) model in a wide kinematic region $rQ_{s}$ which takes into account charm mass. The successful description of $σ_{\mathrm{dip}}(x,r)/σ_{0}$ and $σ_{\mathrm{dip}}(rQ_{s})/σ_{0}$ are…
In this work we consider the QCD parton saturation models to describe soft interactions at the high energy limit. The total and elastic cross sections as well as the elastic slope parameter are obtained for proton-proton and pion-proton collisions and compared to recent experimental results. The analyses are done within the color dipole formalism taking into account saturation models which have been tested against DIS data. The main point is that the match between soft and hard interaction occurs in the saturation region which can be described by high density QCD approaches. Discussion is perf…
