We consider the fractional quantum Hall effect at the filling factor $ν=4/11$, where two independent experiments have observed a well-developed and quantized Hall plateau. We examine the Abelian state described by the "$4\bar{2}1^{3}$" parton wave function and numerically demonstrate it to be a plausible candidate for the ground state at $ν=4/11$. We work out the low-energy effective theory of the $4\bar{2}1^{3}$ edge and make predictions for experimentally measurable properties of the state.
The electron-electron interaction in the Landau levels of bilayer graphene is markedly different from that of conventional semiconductors such as GaAs. We show that in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, in the orbital which is dominated by the non-relativistic second Landau level wave function, by tuning the magnetic field a topological quantum phase transition from an Abelian composite fermion to a non-Abelian parton fractional quantum Hall state can be induced at filling factors $1/2, ~2/5$ and $3/7$. The parton states host exotic anyons that can potentially be utilized to store an…
We study the $ν={\pm}1/2$ fractional quantum Hall states in graphene observed by Zibrov et al. [Nat. Phys. 14, 930 (2018)]. The parton construction is employed to provide a valley unpolarized trial wave function for these states. The lattice scale valley anisotropic terms in the Hamiltonian soften the repulsion between electrons in different valleys to favor the valley unpolarized state. The validity of our proposal is corroborated by numerical calculations.
Fascinating structures have arisen from the study of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the even denominator fraction of $5/2$. We consider the FQHE at another even denominator fraction, namely $ν=2+3/8$, where a well-developed and quantized Hall plateau has been observed in experiments. We examine the non-Abelian state described by the "$\bar{3}\bar{2}^{2}1^{4}$" parton wave function and numerically demonstrate it to be a feasible candidate for the ground state at $ν=2+3/8$. We make predictions for experimentally measurable properties of the $\bar{3}\bar{2}^{2}1^{4}$ state that can …
We consider the fractional quantum Hall effect at the filling $ν=6/17$, where experiments have observed features of incompressibility in the form of a minimum in the longitudinal resistance. We propose a parton state denoted as "$3\bar{2}1^{3}$" and show it to be a feasible candidate to capture the ground state at $ν=6/17$. We work out the low-energy effective theory of the $3\bar{2}1^{3}$ edge and make several predictions for experimentally measurable properties of the state which can help detect its underlying topological order. Intriguingly, we find that the $3\bar{2}1^{3}$ state likely lie…
The current proposals for producing non-Abelian anyons and Majorana particles, which are neither fermions nor bosons, are primarily based on the realization of topological superconductivity in two dimensions. We show theoretically that the unique Landau level structure of bilayer graphene provides a new possible avenue for achieving such exotic particles. Specifically, we demonstrate the feasibility of a "parton" fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, which supports non-Abelian particles without the usual topological superconductivity. Furthermore, we advance this state as the fundamental explan…
The quantum Hall phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer system in the second Landau level is studied as a function of tunneling and layer separation using exact diagonalization. We make the striking prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the quantum phase transition between them w…
We present a new class of non-abelian spin-singlet quantum Hall states, generalizing Halperin's abelian spin-singlet states and the Read-Rezayi non-abelian quantum Hall states for spin-polarized electrons. We label the states by (k,M) with M odd (even) for fermionic (bosonic) states, and find a filling fraction $ν=2k/(2kM+3)$. The states with M=0 are bosonic spin-singlet states characterized by an SU(3)_k symmetry. We explain how an effective Landau-Ginzburg theory for the SU(3)_2 state can be constructed. In general, the quasi-particles over these new quantum Hall states carry spin, fractiona…
We show in this paper that thermopower is enhanced in non-Abelian quantum Hall liquids under appropriate conditions. This is because thermopower measures entropy per electron in the clean limit, while the degeneracy and entropy associated with non-Abelian quasiparticles enhance entropy when they are present. Thus thermopower can potentially probe non-Abelian nature of the quasiparticles, and measure their quantum dimension.
We show that non-abelian quantum Hall states can be identified by experimental measurements of the temperature-dependence of either the electrochemical potential or the orbital magnetization. The predicted signals of non-abelian statistics are within experimental resolution, and can be clearly distinguished from other contributions under realistic circumstances. The proposed measurement technique also has the potential to resolve spin-ordering transitions in low density electronic systems in the Wigner crystal and strongly-interacting Luttinger liquid regimes.
While the internal structure of Abelian topological order is well understood, how to characterize the non-Abelian topological order is an outstanding issue. We propose a distinctive scheme based on the many-body Chern number matrix to characterize non-Abelian multicomponent fractional quantum Hall states. As a concrete example, we study the many-body ground state of two-component bosons at the filling faction $ν=4/3$ in topological flat band models. Utilizing density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations, we demonstrate the emergence of non-Abelian spin-singlet fr…
A large class of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states can be classified according to their pattern of zeros, which describes the way ideal ground state wave functions go to zero as various clusters of electrons are brought together. In this paper we generalize this approach to classify multilayer FQH states. Such a classification leads to the construction of a class of non-Abelian multilayer FQH states that are closely related to $\hat{g}_k$ parafermion conformal field theories, where $\hat{g}_k$ is an affine simple Lie algebra. We discuss the possibility of some of the simplest of these non-A…
We study the tunable quantum Hall effects in a non-Abelian honeycomb optical lattice which is a many-Dirac-points system. We find that the quantum Hall effects present different features as change as relative strengths of several perturbations. Namely, a gauge-field-dressed next-nearest-neighbor hopping can induce the quantum spin Hall effect and a Zeeman field can induce a so-called quantum anomalous valley Hall effect which includes two copies of quantum Hall states with opposite Chern numbers and counter-propagating edge states. Our study extends the borders of the field of quantum Hall eff…
The Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are incompressible non-Abelian topological fluids present in a half-filled electron Landau level, where there is a balanced population of electrons and holes. They give rise to half-integral quantum Hall plateaus that divide critical transitions between integer quantum Hall (IQH) states. On the other hand, there are Abelian FQH states, such as the Laughlin state, that can be understood using partons, which are fermionic divisions of the electron. In this paper, we propose a new family of incompressible paired parton FQH states at filling $ν=1/6…
We examine the relation between different electronic transport phenomena in a Fabry-Perot interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime. In particular, we study the way these phenomena reflect the statistics of quantum Hall quasi-particles. For two series of states we examine, one abelian and one non-abelian, we show that the information that may be obtained from measurements of the lowest order interference pattern in an open Fabry-Perot interferometer is identical to the one that may be obtained from the temperature dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks in a closed interferometer. We a…
We study continuous quantum phase transitions that can occur in bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems as the interlayer tunneling and interlayer repulsion are tuned. We introduce a slave-particle gauge theory description of a series of continuous transitions from the (ppq) Abelian bilayer states to a set of non-Abelian FQH states, which we dub the orbifold FQH states, of which the Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state is a special case. This provides an example in which Z2 electron fractionalization leads to non-Abelian topological phases. The naive "ideal" wave functions and ideal Hamilt…
The recent measurement of a half-integer thermal conductance for the $ν=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall state has confirmed its non-Abelian nature, making the question of the underlying topological order highly intriguing. We analyze the shot noise at the edge of the three most prominent non-Abelian candidate states. We show that the noise scaling with respect to the edge length can, in combination with the thermal conductance, be used to experimentally distinguish between the Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, and particle-hole-Pfaffian edge structures.
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the lowest two Landau levels in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation, i.e., we revisit the lowest Landau level filling factor 1/2 bilayer problem and make new predictions involving bilayers in the half-filled second Landau level (i.e., filling factor 5/2). Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a FQHE described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. In th…
Using projective construction, a generalized parton construction, we construct many non-Abelian quantum Hall (QH) states, which include the Pfaffian state at filling fraction $ν=1/2$. The projective construction allows us to calculate the bulk and the edge effective theory for the constructed QH state. We illustrate how to use the bulk effective theory to calculate the ground state degeneracy of non-Abelian QH liquids on torus. We point out that the full description of the effective theory requires both the effective Lagrangian and the definition of electron operators. The latter generates all…
We construct Landau-Ginzburg effective field theories for fractional quantum Hall states -- such as the Pfaffian state -- which exhibit non-Abelian statistics. These theories rely on a Meissner construction which increases the level of a non-Abelian Chern-Simons theory while simultaneously projecting out the unwanted degrees of freedom of a concomitant enveloping Abelian theory. We describe this construction in the context of a system of bosons at Landau level filling factor $ν=1$, where the non-Abelian symmetry is a dynamically-generated SU(2) continuous extension of the discrete particle-hol…
The low energy physics of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states -- a paradigm of strongly correlated topological phases of matter -- to a large extent is captured by weakly interacting quasiparticles known as composite fermions (CFs). In this paper, based on numerical simulations and effective field theory, we argue that some \emph{high energy} states in the FQH spectra necessitate a different description based on \emph{parton} quasiparticles. We show that Jain states at filling factor $ν{=}n/(2pn\pm1)$ with integers $n,p{\geq}2$, support two kinds of collective modes: in addition to the well-k…
We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at the same filling fraction in two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state while the other side is the non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have implicati…
A large class of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states can be classified according to their pattern of zeros, which describes the order of zeros in ground state wave functions as various clusters of electrons are brought together. The pattern-of-zeros approach can be generalized to systematically classify multilayer/spin-unpolarized FQH states, which has led to the construction of a class of non-Abelian multicomponent FQH states. Here we discuss some of the simplest non-Abelian two-component states that we find and the possibility of their experimental realization in bilayer systems at $ν= 2/3$…
We compute the physical properties of non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states described by Jack polynomials at general filling $ν=\frac{k}{r}$. For $r=2$, these states are identical to the $Z_k$ Read-Rezayi parafermions, whereas for $r>2$ they represent new FQH states. The $r=k+1$ states, multiplied by a Vandermonde determinant, are a non-Abelian alternative construction of states at fermionic filling $2/5, 3/7, 4/9...$. We obtain the thermal Hall coefficient, the quantum dimensions, the electron scaling exponent, and show that the non-Abelian quasihole has a well-defined propagator f…
Significant insights into non-Abelian quantum Hall states were obtained from studying special multi-particle interaction Hamiltonians, whose unique ground states are the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states for the case of spinless electrons. We generalize this approach to include the electronic spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We demonstrate that in the absence of Zeeman splitting the ground states of such Hamiltonians have large degeneracies and very rich spin structures. The spin structure of the ground states and low-energy excitations can be understood based on an emergent SU(3) symmetry for the …
We formulate a theory of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states by considering an anisotropic system consisting of coupled, interacting one dimensional wires. We show that Abelian bosonization provides a simple framework for characterizing the Moore Read state, as well as the more general Read Rezayi sequence. This coupled wire construction provides a solvable Hamiltonian formulated in terms of electronic degrees of freedom, and provides a direct route to characterizing the quasiparticles and edge states in terms of conformal field theory. This construction leads to a simple interpretation…
The Read-Rezayi (RR) parafermion states form a series of exotic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling $ν= k/(k+2)$. Computationally, the wave functions of these states are prohibitively expensive to generate for large systems. We introduce a series of parton states, denoted "$\bar{2}^{k}1^{k+1}$," and show that they lie in the same universality classes as the particle-hole-conjugate RR ("anti-RR") states. Our analytical results imply that a $(U(1)_{k+1} \times U(2k)_{-1})/(SU(k)_{-2} \times U(1)_{-1})$ coset conformal field theory describes the edge excitations of the $\b…
In this letter we propose an interferometric experiment to detect non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics -- one of the hallmark characteristics of the Moore-Read state expected to describe the observed FQHE plateau at nu=5/2. The implications for using this state for constructing a topologically protected qubit as has been recently proposed by Das Sarma et. al. are also addressed.
Motivated by two independent experiments revealing a resistance minimum at the Landau level (LL) filling factor $ν=2+4/9$, characteristic of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and suggesting electron condensation into a yet unknown quantum liquid, we propose that this state likely belongs in a parton sequence, put forth recently to understand the emergence of FQHE at $ν=2+6/13$. While the $ν=2+4/9$ state proposed here directly follows three simpler parton states, all known to occur in the second LL, it is topologically distinct from the Jain composite fermion (CF) state which occurs at …
Some theories predict that the filling factor 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state can exhibit non-Abelian statistics, which makes it a candidate for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Although the non-Abelian Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian state, are the most plausible wave functions for the 5/2 state, there are a number of alternatives with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics. Recent experiments suggest that the tunneling exponents are more consistent with an Abelian state rather than a non-Abelian state. Here, we present edge-current-tunneli…
We study the coupling between a quantum dot and the edge of a non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state which is spatially separated from it by an integer quantum Hall state. Near a resonance, the physics at energy scales below the level spacing of the edge states of the dot is governed by a $k$-channel Kondo model when the quantum Hall state is a Read-Rezayi state at filling fraction $ν=2+k/(k+2)$ or its particle-hole conjugate at $ν=2+2/(k+2)$. The $k$-channel Kondo model is channel isotropic even without fine tuning in the former state; in the latter, it is generically channel anisotropic. …
The possibility of realizing non-Abelian statistics and utilizing it for topological quantum computation (TQC) has generated widespread interest. However, the non-Abelian statistics that can be realized in most accessible proposals is not powerful enough for universal TQC. In this paper, we consider a simple bilayer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) system with the $1/3$ Laughlin state in each layer. We show that interlayer tunneling can drive a transition to an exotic non-Abelian state that contains the famous `Fibonacci'anyon, whose non-Abelian statistics is powerful enough for universal TQC. Ou…
There are several possible theoretically allowed non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that could potentially be realized in one- and two- component FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν= n+ 2/3$, for integer $n$. Some of these states even possess quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics that are powerful enough for universal topological quantum computation, and are thus of particular interest. Here, we initiate a systematic numerical study, using both exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo, to investigate the phase diagram of FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν…
We present results of extensive numerical calculations on the ground state of electrons in the first excited (n=1) Landau level with Coulomb interactions, and including non-zero thickness effects, for filling factors 12/5 and 13/5 in the torus geometry. In a region that includes these experimentally-relevant values, we find that the energy spectrum and the overlaps with the trial states support the previous hypothesis that the system is in the non-Abelian k = 3 liquid phase we introduced in a previous paper.
In the pattern-of-zeros approach to quantum Hall states, a set of data {n;m;S_a|a=1,...,n; n,m,S_a in N} (called the pattern of zeros) is introduced to characterize a quantum Hall wave function. In this paper we find sufficient conditions on the pattern of zeros so that the data correspond to a valid wave function. Some times, a set of data {n;m;S_a} corresponds to a unique quantum Hall state, while other times, a set of data corresponds to several different quantum Hall states. So in the latter cases, the patterns of zeros alone does not completely characterize the quantum Hall states. In thi…
We study the trapping of Abelian anyons (quasiholes and quasiparticles) by a local potential (e.g., induced by an AFM tip) in a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential. We find, in particular, at Laughlin filling fraction $ν= 1/3$, both quasihole and quasiparticle states can emerge as the ground state of the system in the presence of the trapping potential. As expected, we find the presence of an Abelian quasihole has no effect on the edge spectrum of the quantum liquid, unlike in the non-Abelian case [Phys. Rev. Let…
The unexpected appearance of a fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) plateau at $ν=2+6/13$~ [Kumar \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 246808 (2010)] offers a clue into the physical mechanism of the FQHE in the second Landau level (SLL). Here we propose a "$\bar{3}\bar{2}111$" parton wave function, which is topologically distinct from the 6/13 state in the lowest Landau level. We demonstrate the $\bar{3}\bar{2}111$ state to be a good candidate for the $ν=2+6/13$ FQHE, and make predictions for experimentally measurable properties that can reveal the nature of this state. Furthermore, we …
It has been shown that different Abelian and non-Abelian fraction quantum Hall states can be characterized by patterns of zeros described by sequences of integers {S_a}. In this paper, we will show how to use the data {S_a} to calculate various topological properties of the corresponding fraction quantum Hall state, such as the number of possible quasiparticle types and their quantum numbers, as well as the actions of the quasiparticle tunneling and modular transformations on the degenerate ground states on torus.
We study the quantum anomalous Hall effect described by a class of two-component Haldane models on square lattices. We show that the latter can be transformed into a pseudospin triplet p+ip-wave paired superfluid. In the long wave length limit, the ground state wave function is described by Halperin's (1,1,-1) state of neutral fermions analogous to the double layer quantum Hall effect. The vortex excitations are charge e/2 abelian anyons which carry a neutral Dirac fermion zero mode. The superconducting proximity effect induces `tunneling' between `layers' which leads to topological phase tran…
We study the physics of electron tunneling between multiple quantum dots and the edge of a quantum Hall state. Our results generalize earlier work [G. A. Fiete, W. Bishara, C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176801 (2008)] in which it was shown that a single quantum dot tunnel coupled to a non-Abelian quantum Hall state can realize a stable multi-channel Kondo fixed point at low-energy. In this work, we investigate the physics of multiple dots and find that a rich set of possible low-energy fixed points arises, including those with non-Fermi liquid properties. Previously unidentified fixed points…
The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we …
Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here we establish a similar correspondence between the Z_3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from …
Classification of complex wave functions of infinite variables is an important problem since it is related to the classification of possible quantum states of matter. In this paper, we propose a way to classify symmetric polynomials of infinite variables using the pattern of zeros of the polynomials. Such a classification leads to a construction of a class of simple non-Abelian quantum Hall states which are closely related to parafermion conformal field theories.
Topological phases of matter are distinguished by topological invariants, such as Chern numbers and topological spins, that quantize their response to electromagnetic currents and changes of ambient geometry. Intriguingly, in the $ν=2/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect, prominent theoretical approaches -- the composite fermion theory and conformal field theory -- have constructed two distinct states, the Jain composite fermion (CF) state and the Gaffnian state, for which many of the topological indices coincide and even the microscopic ground state wave functions have high overlap with each oth…
We study the non-abelian statistics characterizing systems where counter-propagating gapless modes on the edges of fractional quantum Hall states are gapped by proximity-coupling to superconductors and ferromagnets. The most transparent example is that of a fractional quantum spin Hall state, in which electrons of one spin direction occupy a fractional quantum Hall state of $ν= 1/m$, while electrons of the opposite spin occupy a similar state with $ν= -1/m$. However, we also propose other examples of such systems, which are easier to realize experimentally. We find that each interface between …
The non-Abelian geometric phases of the robust degenerate ground states were proposed as physically measurable defining properties of topological order in 1990. In this paper we discuss in detail such a quantitative characterization of topological order, using generic Abelian fractional quantum Hall states as examples. We find a way to determine even the pure U(1) phase of the non-Abelian geometric phases. We show that the non-Abelian geometric phases not only contain information about the quasi-particle statistics, they also contain information about the chiral central charge Delta c mod 24 o…
We present a simple approach to calculate the degeneracy and the structure of the ground states of non-abelian quantum Hall (QH) liquids on the torus. Our approach can be applied to any QH liquids (abelian or non-abelian) obtained from the parton construction. We explain our approach by studying a series of examples of increasing complexity. When the effective theory of a non-abelian QH liquid is a non-abelian Chern-Simons (CS) theory, our approach reproduces the well known results for the ground state degeneracy of the CS theory. However, our approach also apply to non-abelian QH liquids whos…
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation. Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a fractional quantum Hall effect described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. We find that, although it is in principle possible, it is unlikely that the non-Abelian FQHE exists in the lowest Landau level. We establish that all so far observed FQHE states …
Quantum information scrambling is the spread of local information into correlation throughout the entire quantum many-body system. This concept has become a central topic in different contexts. In this work, we restate the connection between anyon condensation and topological quantum information scrambling in quantum Hall interfaces. We consider the interface between the Abelian Halperin-330 state and the non-Abelian Read-Rezayi state. We verify explicitly that the interface can be fully gapped. This allows the transmutation of local pseudospin information carried by an Abelian anyon into topo…
Signatures of the non-Abelian statistics of quasi-particles in the $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state are predicted to be present in the current-voltage characteristics of tunneling through one or two quantum Hall puddles of Landau filling $ν_a$ embedded in a bulk of filling $ν_b$ with $(ν_a,ν_b)=(2,5/2)$ and $(ν_a,ν_b)=(5/2,2)$.
