Motivated by two independent experiments revealing a resistance minimum at the Landau level (LL) filling factor $ν=2+4/9$, characteristic of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and suggesting electron condensation into a yet unknown quantum liquid, we propose that this state likely belongs in a parton sequence, put forth recently to understand the emergence of FQHE at $ν=2+6/13$. While the $ν=2+4/9$ state proposed here directly follows three simpler parton states, all known to occur in the second LL, it is topologically distinct from the Jain composite fermion (CF) state which occurs at the same $ν=4/9$ filling of the lowest LL. We predict experimentally measurable properties of the $4/9$ parton state that can reveal its underlying topological structure and definitively distinguish it from the $4/9$ Jain CF state.
We calculate a topological invariant, whose value would coincide with the Chern number in case of integer quantum Hall effect, for fractional quantum Hall states. In case of Abelian fractional quantum Hall states, this invariant is shown to be equal to the trace of the K-matrix. In case of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states, this invariant can be calculated on a case by case basis from the conformal field theory describing these states. This invariant can be used, for example, to distinguish between different fractional Hall states numerically even though, as a single number, it cannot…
We investigate the algebraic structure of flat energy bands a partial filling of which may give rise to a fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect (or a fractional Chern insulator) and a fractional quantum spin Hall effect. Both effects arise in the case of a sufficiently flat energy band as well as a roughly flat and homogeneous Berry curvature, such that the global Chern number, which is a topological invariant, may be associated with a local non-commutative geometry. This geometry is similar to the more familiar situation of the fractional quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional electron sys…
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
The concept of fractional charge is central to the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Here I use exact diagonalization as well as configuration space renormalization (CSR) to study finite clusters which are large enough to contain two independent edges. I analyze the conditions of resonant tunneling between the two edges. The "computer experiment" reveals a periodic sequence of resonant tunneling events consistent with the experimentally observed fractional quantization of electric charge in units of e/3 and e/5.
We calculate the phase diagram of the two component fractional quantum Hall effect as a function of the spin or valley Zeeman energy and the filling factor, which reveals new phase transitions and phase boundaries spanning many fractional plateaus. This phase diagram is relevant to the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene and in GaAs and AlAs quantum wells, when either the spin or valley degree of freedom is active.
We elucidate the nature of neutral collective excitations of fractional quantum Hall liquids in the long-wavelength limit. We demonstrate that they are chiral gravitons carrying angular momentum - 2, which are quanta of quantum motion of an internal metric, and show up as resonance peaks in the systems response to what is the fractional Hall analog of gravitational waves. Relation with existing and possible future experimental work that can detect these fractional quantum Hall gravitons and reveal their chirality are discussed.
We propose ways to create and detect fractionally charged excitations in \emph{integer} quantum Hall edge states. The charge fractionalization occurs due to the Coulomb interaction between electrons propagating on different edge channels. The fractional charge of the soliton-like collective excitations can be observed in time resolved or frequency dependent shot noise measurements.
A microscopic confirmation of the fractional statistics of the {\em quasiparticles} in the fractional quantum Hall effect has so far been lacking. We calculate the statistics of the composite-fermion quasiparticles at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/5$ by evaluating the Berry phase for a closed loop encircling another composite-fermion quasiparticle. A careful consideration of subtle perturbations in the trajectory due to the presence of an additional quasiparticle is crucial for obtaining the correct value of the statistics. The conditions for the applicability of the fractional statistics concept are discu…
We establish a variational principle for properly mapping a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state to a fractional Chern insulator (FCI). We find that the mapping has a gauge freedom which could generate a class of FCI ground state wave functions appropriate for different forms of interactions. Therefore, the gauge should be fixed by a variational principle that minimizes the interaction energy of the FCI model. For a soft and isotropic electron-electron interaction, the principle leads to a gauge coinciding with that for maximally localized \emph{two-dimensional} projected Wannier functions of a…
We address the issue of an apparent disagreement between theory and experiment on the I-V characteristic of electron tunneling from a metal to the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime. A part of our result is a theory for the edge of the half-filled Landau level.
We discuss the orbital effect of a tilted magnetic field on the quantum Hall effect in parabolic quantum wells. Many-body states realized at the fractional 1/3 and 1/2 filling of the second electronic subband are studied using finite-size exact diagonalization. In both cases, we obtain the phase diagram consisting of a fractional quantum Hall fluid phase that persists for moderate tilts, and eventually undergoes a direct transition to the stripe phase. It is shown that tilting of the field probes the geometrical degree of freedom of fractional quantum Hall fluids, and can be partly related to …
We numerically study the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factors $ν=12/5$ and 13/5 (the particle-hole conjugate of 12/5) in high-quality two-dimensional GaAs heterostructures via exact diagonalization including finite well width and Landau level mixing. We find that Landau level mixing suppresses $ν=13/5$ fractional quantum Hall effect relative to $ν=12/5$. By contrast, we find both $ν=2/5$ and (its particle-hole conjugate) $ν=3/5$ fractional quantum Hall effects in the lowest Landau level to be robust under Landau level mixing and finite well-width corrections. Our results provide a…
Because of the spin and Dirac-valley degrees of freedom, graphene allows the observation of one-, two- or four-component fractional quantum Hall effect in different parameter regions. We argue that some, though not all, apparently puzzling features observed in recent experiments are consistent with a two-component fractional quantum Hall effect, with the electron spin frozen but the Dirac-valley symmetry approximately intact. In the SU(4) limit, we predict that new low-energy Goldstone modes determine the stability of the fractional quantum Hall states at 2/5, 3/7 etc.; SU(4) skyrmions are not…
The observation of new insulating phases of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level is reported. These states, which are manifested as re-entrant integer quantized Hall effects, exist alongside well-developed even-denominator fractional quantized Hall states at nu=7/2 and 5/2 and new odd-denominator states at nu=3+1/5 and 3+4/5.
We study theoretically resonant tunneling of composite fermions through their quasi-bound states around a fractional quantum Hall island, and find a rich set of possible transitions of the island state as a function of the magnetic field or the backgate voltage. These considerations have possible relevance to a recent experimental study, and bring out many subtleties involved in deducing fractional braiding statistics.
We study fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry with open boundaries. By truncating the Coulomb interactions between electrons we show that it is possible to construct infinitely many exact eigenstates including the ground state, quasiholes, quasielectrons and the magnetoroton branch of excited states.
By allowing the spin degrees of freedom, we present a generalized spin allowed $U(1)\times U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory of fractional quantum Hall effects for odd and even denominator filling factors in single layers. This theory is shown to reproduce all possible odd denominator filling factors corresponding to spin-unpolarized, partially polarized, and fully polarized fractional quantum Hall states. Closely following our earlier theory, we derive the formal expressions of electromagnetic polarization tensors and Hall conductivity for the spin-unpolarized and partially polarized fractional quant…
A low energy effective Hamiltonian for the fractional quantum Hall effect is obtained by using irreducible representations of the symmetry group. It is found that the model described by the effective Hamiltonian is similar to the Heisenberg spin chain. Symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian are studied in order to decompose the relevant Hilbert space. This decomposition will be useful for further numerical analysis on the gap of the quantum Hall system.
It is shown, with the help of exact diagonalization studies on systems with up to sixteen electrons, in the presence of up to two delta function impurities, that the Pfaffian model is inadequate for the actual quasiholes and quasiparticles of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect. Implications for non-Abelian statistics are discussed.
We discuss anomalous fractional quantum Hall effect that exists without external magnetic field. We propose that excitations in such systems may be described effectively by non-interacting particles with the Hamiltonians defined on the Brillouin zone with a branch cut. Hall conductivity of such a system is expressed through the one-particle Green function. We demonstrate that for the Hamiltonians of the proposed type this expression takes fractional values times Klitzing constant. Possible relation of the proposed construction with degeneracy of ground state is discussed as well.
Unlike regular electron spin, the pseudospin degeneracy of Fermi points in graphene does not couple directly to magnetic field. Therefore, graphene provides a natural vehicle to observe the integral and fractional quantum Hall physics in an elusive limit analogous to zero Zeeman splitting in GaAs systems. This limit can exhibit new integral plateaus arising from interactions, large pseudoskyrmions, fractional sequences, even/odd numerator effects, composite-fermion pseudoskyrmions, and a pseudospin-singlet composite-fermion Fermi sea. The Dirac nature of the B=0 spectrum, which induces qualita…
We use chiral Luttinger liquid theory to study transport through a quantum dot in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime and find rich non-Fermi-liquid tunneling characteristics. In particular, we predict a remarkable Coulomb-blockade-type energy gap that is quantized in units of the noninteracting level spacing, new power-law tunneling exponents for voltages beyond threshold, and a line shape as a function of gate voltage that is dramatically different than that for a Fermi liquid. We propose experiments to use these unique spectral properties as a new probe of the fractional quantum Hall …
We show that the entanglement spectrum associated with a certain class of strongly correlated many-body states --- the wave functions proposed by Laughlin and Jain to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect --- can be very well described in terms of a simple model of non-interacting (or weakly interacting) composite fermions.
Two microscopic theories have been proposed for the explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect, namely the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy theory and the composite fermion theory. Contradictory statements have been made regarding the relation between them, ranging from their being distinct to their being completely equivalent. This article attempts to provide a clarification of the issue. It is shown that the two theories postulate distinct microscopic mechanisms for the origin of the fractional quantum Hall effect, and make substantially different predictions that have allowed experiments t…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in a bilayer with charge-distribution imbalance induced, for instance, by a bias gate voltage. The bilayer can either be intrinsic or it can be formed spontaneously in wide quantum wells, due to the Coulomb repulsion between electrons. We focus on fractional quantum Hall effect in asymmetric bilayer systems at filling factor nu=4/11 and show that an asymmetric Halperin-like trial wavefunction gives a valid description of the ground state of the system.
We present a model of dissipative transport in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Our model takes account of tunneling through saddle points in the effective potential for excitations created by impurities. We predict the temperature range over which activated behavior is observed and explain why this range nearly always corresponds to around a factor two in temperature in both integer quantum Hall and fractional quantum Hall systems. We identify the ratio of the gap observed in the activated behavior and the temperature of the inflection point in the Arrhenius plot as an important diagnostic…
We study the $ν={\pm}1/2$ fractional quantum Hall states in graphene observed by Zibrov et al. [Nat. Phys. 14, 930 (2018)]. The parton construction is employed to provide a valley unpolarized trial wave function for these states. The lattice scale valley anisotropic terms in the Hamiltonian soften the repulsion between electrons in different valleys to favor the valley unpolarized state. The validity of our proposal is corroborated by numerical calculations.
We present an exact scheme of bosonization for anyons (including fermions) in the two-dimensional manifold of the quantum Hall fluid. This gives every fractional quantum Hall phase of the electrons one or more dual bosonic descriptions. For interacting electrons, the statistical transmutation from anyons to bosons allows us to explicitly derive the microscopic statistical interaction between the anyons, in the form of the effective two-body and few-body interactions. This also leads to a number of unexpected topological phases of the single component bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect that…
We argue that flows of the quantum electronic liquid in the Fractional Quantum Hall state are comprehensively described by the hydrodynamics of vortices in the quantum incompressible rotating liquid. We obtain the quantum hydrodynamics of vortex flow by quantizing Kirchhoff equations for vortex dynamics. We demonstrate that quantized Kirchhoff equations capture all major features of FQH states including subtle effects of Lorentz shear force, magneto-roton spectrum, Hall current in a non-uniform electromagnetic field, thus providing a powerful framework to study FQHE and superfluids. The result…
The interplay between interaction and disorder-induced localization is of fundamental interest. This article addresses localization physics in the fractional quantum Hall state, where both interaction and disorder have nonperturbative consequences. We provide compelling theoretical evidence that the localization of a single quasiparticle of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $ν=n/(2n+1)$ has a striking {\it quantitative} correspondence to the localization of a single electron in the $(n+1)$th Landau level. By analogy to the dramatic experimental manifestations of Anderson loca…
We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characte…
It is widely believed that integer quantum Hall systems do not have fractional excitations. Here we show the converse to be true for a class of systems where integer quantum Hall effect emerges spontaneously due to the interplay of itinerant electrons and noncoplanar magnetic ordering. We show that magnetic $Z_2$ vortices in such systems, whose topological stability is guaranteed by the structure of the order parameter, indeed carry fractional charge.
We propose a systematical approach to construct generic fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, which are generalizations of the fractional quantum Hall states to lattice models with zero net magnetic field and full lattice translation symmetry. Local and translationally invariant Hamiltonians can also be constructed, for which the proposed states are unique ground states. Our result demonstrates that generic chiral topologically ordered states can be realized in lattice models, without requiring magnetic translation symmetry and Landau level structure. We further generalize our appro…

We study the time-dependent dynamical phase of fractional quasiparticles in quantum Hall states using Ramsey interferometry. A Ramsey two-pulse voltage modulation generates an interference term in the current noise of a quantum point contact oscillating with the dynamical phase. We show that the interference pattern probes the Green's function of the fractional quasi-particles in the time domain and reveals the fractional charge. We address both the case of a point-like tunnel junction and the case of momentum-resolved tunneling which also provides information on the speed of those quasipartic…
We note an implication of chiral Luttinger liquid based edge state description of the fractional quantum Hall effect. By considering several examples that involve backward moving neutral modes, arising from either composite fermions with reverse flux attached or edge reconstruction, we show that non-universality of the edge exponent implies non-universality of the Hall conductance, as measured in the two-terminal conductance.
We review the recently proposed Dirac composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. This paper is based on a talk given at the Nambu Symposium at University of Chicago, March 11-13, 2016.
The effective field theory of the fractional quantum Hall edge is reformulated from microscopic dynamics. Noncommutative Chern-Simons theory is a microscopic description for the quantum Hall fluid. We use it for reference. Considering relabeling symmetry of the electrons and incompressibility of the fluid, we obtain a constraint and derive a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory containing interaction terms. We calculate one-loop corrections to the phonon and electron propagators and get a new tunneling exponent. It agrees with experiments.
The (guiding-center) "Hall viscosity" is a fundamental tensor property of incompressible ``Hall fluids'' exhibiting the fractional quantum Hall effect; it determines the stress induced by a non-uniform electric field, and the intrinsic dipole moment on (unreconstructed) edges. It is characterized by a rational number and an intrinsic metric tensor that defines distances on an ``incompressibility lengthscale''. These properties do not require rotational invariance in the 2D plane. The sign of the guiding-center Hall viscosity distinguishes particle fluids from hole fluids, and its magnitude pro…
We formulate the Kohn-Sham equations for the fractional quantum Hall effect by mapping the original electron problem into an auxiliary problem of composite fermions that experience a density dependent effective magnetic field. Self-consistent solutions of the KS equations demonstrate that our formulation captures not only configurations with non-uniform densities but also topological properties such as fractional charge and fractional braid statistics for the quasiparticles excitations. This method should enable a realistic modeling of the edge structure, the effect of disorder, spin physics, …
Quantum Hall effects with multicomponent internal degrees of freedom facilitate the playground of novel emergent topological orders. Here, we explore the correlated topological phases of two-component hardcore bosons at a total filling factor $ν=2/5$ in both lattice Chern band models and Landau level continuum model under the interplay of intracomponent and intercomponent repulsions. We give the numerically theoretical demonstration of the emergence of two competing distinct fractional quantum Hall states: Halperin (441) fractional quantum Hall effect and Halperin (223) fractional quantum Hall…
We present a generalization of the composite Fermion picture for a muticomponent quantum Hall plasma which contains particle with different effective charges. The model predicts very well the low-lying states of a $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state found in numerical diagonalization.
We construct a class of lattice Hamiltonians that exhibit fractional Hall conductivity. These Hamiltonians, while not being exactly solvable, can be controllably solved in their low energy sectors, through a combination of perturbative and exact techniques. Our construction demonstrates a systematic way to circumvent the Kapustin-Fidkowski no-go theorem and is generalizable.
Fractional quantum Hall-superconductor heterostructures may provide a platform towards non-abelian topological modes beyond Majoranas. However their quantitative theoretical study remains extremely challenging. We propose and implement a numerical setup for studying edge states of fractional quantum Hall droplets with a superconducting instability. The fully gapped edges carry a topological degree of freedom that can encode quantum information protected against local perturbations. We simulate such a system numerically using exact diagonalization by restricting the calculation to the quasihole…
We develop a hydrodynamic field theory of the three-dimensional fractional quantum Hall effect, which was recently proposed to exist in magnetic Weyl semimetals, when the Weyl nodes are gapped by strong repulsive interactions. This theory takes the form of a BF theory, which contains both one-form and two-form gauge fields, coupling to quasiparticle and loop excitations correspondingly. It may be regarded as a generalization of the Chern-Simons theory of two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall liquids to three dimensions.
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions 7/3 and 5/2 in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction, using the exact diagonalization method and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in a spherical geometry. Trial wave functions at these fillings are the Laughlin state and the Moore-Reed-Pfaffian state. The ground state excitation energy gaps and pair-correlation functions at fractional filling factor 7/3 and 5/2 in the second Landau level are calculated. We find that the spin-orbit interaction stabilizes the fractional quantum Hall states.
In this letter, we discuss the recently proposed fractional quantum Hall effect in the absence of Landau levels. It is shown that the parton construction can explain all properties of 1/3 state, including the effective charge of quasi-particles, their statistics and the many-body ground-state degeneracy. The low energy description of these states has been discussed. We also generalize our model to construct the hierarchical quantum Hall states at filling fractions other than $1/m$.
A conceptual difficulty in formulating the density functional theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect is that while in the standard approach the Kohn-Sham orbitals are either fully occupied or unoccupied, the physics of the fractional quantum Hall effect calls for fractionally occupied Kohn-Sham orbitals. This has necessitated averaging over an ensemble of Slater determinants to obtain meaningful results. We develop an alternative approach in which we express and minimize the grand canonical potential in terms of the composite fermion variables. This provides a natural resolution of the f…
The fractional quantum Hall effect has inspired searches for exotic emergent topological particles, such as fractionally charged excitations, composite fermions, abelian and nonabelian anyons and Majorana fermions. Fractionally charged skyrmions, which support both topological charge and topological vortex-like spin structure, have also been predicted to occur in the vicinity of 1/3 filling of the lowest Landau level. The fractional skyrmions, however, are anticipated to be exceedingly fragile, suppressed by very small Zeeman energies. Here we show that, slightly away from 1/3 filling, the sma…
Bilayer graphene has been predicted to give unprecedented tunability of the electron-electron interaction with the help of external parameters, allowing one to stabilize different fractional quantum Hall states. Recent experimental works make theoretical analysis of such systems extremely relevant. In this paper we describe a methodology for investigating the possibility of realizing specific fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene taking into account polarization effects and virtual interband transitions. We apply this methodology to explore the possibility of realizing the Moore-R…
Incompressible even denominator fractional quantum Hall states at fillings $ν= \pm \frac{1}{2}$ and $ν= \pm \frac{1}{4}$ have been recently observed in monolayer graphene. We use a Chern-Simons description of multi-component fractional quantum Hall states in graphene to investigate the properties of these states and suggest variational wavefunctions that may describe them. We find that the experimentally observed even denominator fractions and standard odd fractions (such as $ν=1/3, 2/5$, etc.) can be accommodated within the same flux attachment scheme and argue that they may arise from sublat…
We propose a pseudo-potential Hamiltonian for the Zhang-Hu's generalized fractional quantum Hall states to be the exact and unique ground states. Analogously to Laughlin's quasi-hole (quasi-particle), the excitations in the generalized fractional quantum Hall states are extended objects. They are vortex-like excitations with fractional charges $+(-)1/m^3$ in the total configuration space CP$^3$. The density correlation function of the Zhang-Hu states indicates that they are incompressible liquid.
In this paper we propose a model of the fractional quantum Hall effect within conventional one-dimensional bosonization. It is shown that in this formalism the resulting bosonized fermion operator corresponding to momenta of Landau gauge wave function is effectively two-dimensional. At special filling factors the bulk gets gapped, and the theory is described by a sine-Gordon model. The edges are shown to be gapless, chiral, and carrying a fractional charge. The hierarchy of obtained fractional charges is consistent with existing experiments and theories. It is also possible to draw a connectio…

A remarkable self-duality of the "guiding-center" structure function s(q) of particles in a partially-filled 2D Landau level is used to express the long-wavelength collective excitation energy of fractional quantum Hall fluids in terms of a shear modulus. A bound on the small-q behavior of s(q) is given.
We develop a Fermionic Chern-Simons (CS) theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect in monolayer graphene with SU(4) symmetry, arising from the spin and the valley degrees of freedom, which involves four distinct CS gauge fields. We choose the corresponding elements of the CS coupling matrix such that an even number of spin and valley quantum number dependent flux quanta is attached to all electrons and that any electron with a given spin and valley quantum number sees an integer number of flux attached to other electrons with different (spin and valley) quantum numbers. Using this CS matri…
In this paper, we consider there exist two types of fundamental quasihole excitation in the fractional quantum spin Hall state and investigate their topological properties by both Chern-Simons field theory and Berry phase technique. By the two different ways, we obtain the identical charge and statistical angle for each type of quasihole, as well as the identical mutual statistics between two different types of quasihole excitation.
We construct a class of 2+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theories which exhibit the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in the infrared, both in the continuum and on the lattice. The UV completion consists of a perturbative $U(1)\times U(1)$ gauge theory with only integer-charged fields, while the low energy spectrum consists of nontrivial topological phases supporting fractional currents, fractionally charged chiral surface modes and bulk anyonic excitations. Exotic phenomena such as a Fractional Quantum Spin Hall Effect can arise in such models.
Some purely chiral fractional quantum Hall states are described by symmetric or anti-symmetric polynomials of infinite variables. In this article, we review a systematic construction and classification of those fractional quantum Hall states and the corresponding polynomials of infinite variables, using the pattern-of-zeros approach. We discuss how to use patterns of zeros to label different fractional quantum Hall states and the corresponding polynomials. We also discuss how to calculate various universal properties (ie the quantum topological invariants) from the pattern of zeros.
