We obtain a Fourier dimension estimate for sets of exact approximation order introduced by Bugeaud for certain approximation functions $ψ$. This Fourier dimension estimate implies that these sets of exact approximation order contain normal numbers.
This paper is motivated by two problems in the theory of Diophantine approximation, namely, Davenport's problem regarding badly approximable points on submanifolds of a Euclidean space and Schmidt's problem regarding the intersections of the sets of weighted badly approximable points. The problems have been recently settled in dimension two but remain open in higher dimensions. In this paper we develop new techniques that allow us to tackle them in full generality. The techniques rest on lattice points counting and a powerful quantitative result of Bernik, Kleinbock and Margulis. The main theo…
We call a badly approximable number $decaying$ if, roughly, the Lagrange constants of integer multiples of that number decay as fast as possible. In this terminology, a question of Y. Bugeaud ('15) asks to find the Hausdorff dimension of the set of decaying badly approximable numbers, and also of the set of badly approximable numbers which are not decaying. We answer both questions, showing that the Hausdorff dimensions of both sets are equal to one. Part of our proof utilizes a game which combines the Banach--Mazur game and Schmidt's game, first introduced in Fishman, Reams, and Simmons (prep…
Let $Ψ:[1,\infty )\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{+}$ be a non-decreasing function, $a_{n}(x)$ the $n$'{th} partial quotient of $x$ and $q_{n}(x)$ the denominator of the $n$'{th} convergent. The set of $Ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable numbers \begin{equation*} G(Ψ):=\Big\{x\in \lbrack 0,1):a_{n}(x)a_{n+1}(x)\,>\,Ψ\big(q_{n}(x) \big)\ \mathrm{for\ infinitely\ many}\ n\in \mathbb{N}\Big\}, \end{equation*} is related with the classical set of $1/q^{2}Ψ(q)$-approximable numbers $ \mathcal{K}(Ψ)$ in the sense that $\mathcal{K}(3Ψ)\subset G(Ψ)$. Both of these sets enjoy the same $s$-dimensional Hausdorff measur…
A classical result of Kaufman states that, for each $τ>1,$ the set of well approximable numbers \[ E(τ)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}: \|qx\| < |q|^{-τ} \text{ for infinitely many integers q}\} \] is a Salem set with Hausdorff dimension $2/(1+τ)$. A natural question to ask is whether the same phenomena holds for well approximable vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n.$ We prove that this is in general not the case. In addition, we also show that in $\mathbb{R}^n, n\geq 2,$ the set of badly approximable vectors is not Salem.
It is well known that in dimension one the set of Dirichlet improvable real numbers consists precisely of badly approximable and singular numbers. We show that in higher dimensions this is not the case by proving that there exist continuum many Dirichlet improvable vectors that are neither badly approximable nor singular. This is a consequence of a stronger statement that involves very well approximable points. In the last section we formulate the notion of intermediate Dirichlet improvable sets concerning approximations by rational planes of every intermediate dimension and show that they coi…
In this note, we use the mass transference principle for rectangles, recently obtained by Wang and Wu (Math. Ann., 2021), to study the Hausdorff dimension of sets of "weighted $Ψ$-well-approximable" points in certain self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Specifically, we investigate weighted $Ψ$-well-approximable points in "missing digit" sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The sets we consider are natural generalisations of Cantor-type sets in $\mathbb{R}$ to higher dimensions and include, for example, four corner Cantor sets (or Cantor dust) in the plane with contraction ratio $\frac{1}{n}$ with $n \…
Recently, Ghosh \& Haynes \cite{HG} proved a Khintchine-type result for the problem of Diophantine approximation in certain projective spaces. In this note we complement their result by observing that a Jarn\'ık-type result also holds for `badly approximable' points in real projective space. In particular, we prove that the natural analogue in projective space of the classical set of badly approximable numbers has full Hausdorff dimension when intersected with certain compact subsets of real projective space. Furthermore, we also establish an analogue of Khintchine's theorem for convergence re…
For any j_1,...,j_n>0 with j_1+...+j_n=1 and any x \in R^n, we consider the set of points y \in R^n for which max_{1\leq i\leq n}(||qx_i-y_i||^{1/j_i})>c/q for some positive constant c=c(y) and all q\in N. These sets are the `twisted' inhomogeneous analogue of Bad(j_1,...,j_n) in the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation. It has been shown that they have full Hausdorff dimension in the non-weighted setting, i.e provided that j_i=1/n, and in the weighted setting when x is chosen from Bad(j_1,...,j_n). We generalise these results proving the full Hausdorff dimension in the weighted se…
We prove that for any proper metric space $X$ and a function $ψ:(0,\infty)\to(0,\infty)$ from a suitable class of approximation functions, the Hausdorff dimensions of the set $W_ψ(Q)$ of all points $ψ$-well-approximable by a well-distributed subset $Q\subset X$, and the set $E_ψ(Q)$ of points that are exactly $ψ$-approximable by $Q$, coincide. This answers in a general setting, a question of Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani in the case of approximation of reals by rationals, and answered by Bugeaud in that case using the continued-fraction expansion of reals. Our main result applies in particular …
We solve the problem of giving sharp asymptotic bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of certain sets of badly approximable matrices, thus improving results of Broderick and Kleinbock (preprint 2013) as well as Weil (preprint 2013), and generalizing to higher dimensions those of Kurzweil ('51) and Hensley ('92). In addition we use our technique to compute the Hausdorff $f$-measure of the set of matrices which are not $ψ$-approximable, given a dimension function $f$ and a function $ψ:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$. This complements earlier work by Dickinson and Velani ('97) who found the Hausdorff $f$-…
In this paper, we investigate the Fourier transform of self-similar measures on R. We provide quantitative decay rates of Fourier transform of some self-similar measures. Our method is based on random walks on lattices and Diophantine approximation in number fields. We also completely identify all self-similar sets which are sets of uniqueness. This generalizes a classical result of Salem and Zygmund.
For a nonincreasing function $ψ$, let $\textrm{Exact}(ψ)$ be the set of complex numbers that are approximable by complex rational numbers to order $ψ$ but to no better order. In this paper, we obtain the Hausdorff dimension and packing dimension of $\textrm{Exact}(ψ)$ when $ψ(x)=o(x^{-2})$. We also prove that the lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension is greater than $2-τ/(1-2τ)$ when $τ=\limsup_{x\to\infty}ψ(x)x^2$ small enough.
Let $K$ be a totally real number field of degree $n \geq 2$. The inverse different of $K$ gives rise to a lattice in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that the space of Schwartz Fourier eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ which vanish on the "component-wise square root" of this lattice, is infinite dimensional. The Fourier non-uniqueness set thus obtained is a discrete subset of the union of all spheres $\sqrt{m}S^{n-1}$ for integers $m \geq 0$ and, as $m \rightarrow \infty$, there are $\sim c_{K} m^{n-1}$ many points on the $m$-th sphere for some explicit constant $c_{K}$, proportional to the square root…
Generalising results of Erdős-Freud and Lindström, we prove that the largest Sidon subset of a bounded interval of integers is equidistributed in Bohr neighbourhoods. We establish this by showing that extremal Sidon sets are Fourier-pseudorandom, in that they have no large non-trivial Fourier coefficients. As a further application we deduce that, for any partition regular equation in five or more variables, every finite colouring of an extremal Sidon set has a monochromatic solution.
