In this paper, we study tractability of $L_2$-approximation of one-periodic functions from weighted Korobov spaces in the worst-case setting. The considered weights are of product form. For the algorithms we allow information from the class $Λ^{\rm all}$ consisting of all continuous linear functionals and from the class $Λ^{\rm std}$, which only consists of function evaluations.
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the weights of the function space for quasi-polynomial tractability, uniform weak tractability, weak tractability and $(σ,τ)$-weak tractability. Together with the already known results for strong polynomial and polynomial tractability, our findings provide a complete picture of the weight conditions for all current standard notions of tractability.
We investigate average case tractability of approximation of additive random fields with marginal random processes corresponding to the Korobov kernels for the non-homogeneous case. We use the absolute error criterion (ABS) or the normalized error criterion (NOR). We show that the problem is always polynomially tractable for ABS or NOR, and give sufficient and necessary conditions for strong polynomial tractability for ABS or NOR.
In this paper we consider $L_p$-approximation, $p \in \{2,\infty\}$, of periodic functions from weighted Korobov spaces. In particular, we discuss tractability properties of such problems, which means that we aim to relate the dependence of the information complexity on the error demand $\varepsilon$ and the dimension $d$ to the decay rate of the weight sequence $(γ_j)_{j \ge 1}$ assigned to the Korobov space. Some results have been well known since the beginning of this millennium, others have been proven quite recently. We give a survey of these findings and will add some new results on the …
We study numerical integration for a weighted Korobov space of analytic periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. In particular, we are interested in how the error depends on the dimension $d$. Many recent papers deal with this problem or similar problems and provide matching necessary and sufficient conditions for various notions of tractability. In most cases even simple algorithms are known which allow to achieve these notions of tractability. However, there is a gap in the literature: while for the notion of exponential-weak tractability one knows matc…
We study the worst case tractability of multivariate linear problems defined on separable Hilbert spaces. Information about a problem instance consists of noisy evaluations of arbitrary bounded linear functionals, where the noise is either deterministic or random. The cost of a single evaluation depends on its precision and is controlled by a cost function. We establish mutual interactions between tractability of a problem with noisy information, the cost function, and tractability of the same problem, but with exact information.
We study the approximation of compact linear operators defined over certain weighted tensor product Hilbert spaces. The information complexity is defined as the minimal number of arbitrary linear functionals which is needed to obtain an $\varepsilon$-approximation for the $d$-variate problem. It is fully determined in terms of the weights and univariate singular values. Exponential tractability means that the information complexity is bounded by a certain function which depends polynomially on $d$ and logarithmically on $\varepsilon^{-1}$. The corresponding un-weighted problem was studied rece…

We study quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods for numerical integration of multivariate functions defined over the high-dimensional unit cube. Lattice rules and polynomial lattice rules, which are special classes of QMC methods, have been intensively studied and the so-called component-by-component (CBC) algorithm has been well-established to construct rules which achieve the almost optimal rate of convergence with good tractability properties for given smoothness and set of weights. Since the CBC algorithm constructs rules for given smoothness and weights, not much is known when such rules are use…
We approximate $d$-variate periodic functions in weighted Korobov spaces with general weight parameters using $n$ function values at lattice points. We do not limit $n$ to be a prime number, as in currently available literature, but allow any number of points, including powers of $2$, thus providing the fundamental theory for construction of embedded lattice sequences. Our results are constructive in that we provide a component-by-component algorithm which constructs a suitable generating vector for a given number of points or even a range of numbers of points. It does so without needing to co…

We develop a general framework for estimating the $L_\infty(\mathbb{T}^d)$ error for the approximation of multivariate periodic functions belonging to specific reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RHKS) using approximants that are trigonometric polynomials computed from sampling values. The used sampling schemes are suitable sets of rank-1 lattices that can be constructed in an extremely efficient way. Furthermore, the structure of the sampling schemes allows for fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms. We present and discuss one FFT algorithm and analyze the worst case $L_\infty$ error for this…
