We study the approximation of compact linear operators defined over certain weighted tensor product Hilbert spaces. The information complexity is defined as the minimal number of arbitrary linear functionals which is needed to obtain an $\varepsilon$-approximation for the $d$-variate problem. It is fully determined in terms of the weights and univariate singular values. Exponential tractability means that the information complexity is bounded by a certain function which depends polynomially on $d$ and logarithmically on $\varepsilon^{-1}$. The corresponding un-weighted problem was studied recently by Hickernell, Kritzer and Woźniakowski with many negative results for exponential tractability. The product weights studied in the present paper change the situation. Depending on the form of polynomial dependence on $d$ and logarithmic dependence on $\varepsilon^{-1}$, we study exponential strong polynomial, exponential polynomial, exponential quasi-polynomial, and exponential $(s,t)$-weak tractability with $\max(s,t)\ge1$. For all these notions of exponential tractability, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on weights and univariate singular values for which it is indeed possible to achieve the corresponding notion of exponential tractability. The case of exponential $(s,t)$-weak tractability with $\max(s,t)<1$ is left for future study.
We study the worst case tractability of multivariate linear problems defined on separable Hilbert spaces. Information about a problem instance consists of noisy evaluations of arbitrary bounded linear functionals, where the noise is either deterministic or random. The cost of a single evaluation depends on its precision and is controlled by a cost function. We establish mutual interactions between tractability of a problem with noisy information, the cost function, and tractability of the same problem, but with exact information.
In this paper, we study tractability of $L_2$-approximation of one-periodic functions from weighted Korobov spaces in the worst-case setting. The considered weights are of product form. For the algorithms we allow information from the class $Λ^{\rm all}$ consisting of all continuous linear functionals and from the class $Λ^{\rm std}$, which only consists of function evaluations. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the weights of the function space for quasi-polynomial tractability, uniform weak tractability, weak tractability and $(σ,τ)$-weak tractability. Together with the alrea…
In this paper we consider $L_p$-approximation, $p \in \{2,\infty\}$, of periodic functions from weighted Korobov spaces. In particular, we discuss tractability properties of such problems, which means that we aim to relate the dependence of the information complexity on the error demand $\varepsilon$ and the dimension $d$ to the decay rate of the weight sequence $(γ_j)_{j \ge 1}$ assigned to the Korobov space. Some results have been well known since the beginning of this millennium, others have been proven quite recently. We give a survey of these findings and will add some new results on the …
In this paper, we study multivariate approximation defined over weighted anisotropic Sobolev spaces which depend on two sequences ${\bf a}=\{a_j\}_{j\geq1}$ and ${\bf b}=\{b_j\}_{j\geq1}$ of positive numbers. We obtain strong equivalences of the approximation numbers, and necessary and sufficient conditions on ${\bf a}$, ${\bf b}$ to achieve various notions of tractability of the weighted anisotropic Sobolev embeddings.
In this paper we consider integration and $L_2$-approximation for functions over $\RR^s$ from weighted Hermite spaces. The first part of the paper is devoted to a comparison of several weighted Hermite spaces that appear in literature, which is interesting on its own. Then we study tractability of the integration and $L_2$-approximation problem for the introduced Hermite spaces, which describes the growth rate of the information complexity when the error threshold $\varepsilon$ tends to 0 and the problem dimension $s$ grows to infinity. Our main results are characterizations of tractability in…
In this article we propose a Weighted Stochastic Mesh (WSM) Algorithm for approximating the value of a discrete and continuous time optimal stopping problem. We prove that in the discrete case the WSM algorithm leads to semi-tractability of the corresponding optimal problems in the sense that its complexity is bounded in order by $\varepsilon^{-4}\log^{d+2}(1/\varepsilon)$ with $d$ being the dimension of the underlying Markov chain. Furthermore we study the WSM approach in the context of continuous time optimal stopping problems and derive the corresponding complexity bounds. Although we can n…
We study approximation of multivariate functions from a separable Hilbert space in the randomized setting with the error measured in the weighted $L_2$ norm. We consider algorithms that use standard information $Λ^{\rm std}$ consisting of function values or general linear information $Λ^{\rm all}$ consisting of arbitrary linear functionals. We use the weighted least squares regression algorithm to obtain the upper estimates of the minimal randomized error using $Λ^{\rm std}$. We investigate the equivalences of various notions of algebraic and exponential tractability for $Λ^{\rm std}$ and $Λ^{…
We study numerical integration for a weighted Korobov space of analytic periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. In particular, we are interested in how the error depends on the dimension $d$. Many recent papers deal with this problem or similar problems and provide matching necessary and sufficient conditions for various notions of tractability. In most cases even simple algorithms are known which allow to achieve these notions of tractability. However, there is a gap in the literature: while for the notion of exponential-weak tractability one knows matc…
We study multivariate approximation in the average case setting with the error measured in the weighted $L_2$ norm. We consider algorithms that use standard information $Λ^{\rm std}$ consisting of function values or general linear information $Λ^{\rm all}$ consisting of arbitrary continuous linear functionals. We investigate the equivalences of various notions of algebraic and exponential tractability for $Λ^{\rm std}$ and $Λ^{\rm all}$ for the absolute error criterion, and show that the power of $Λ^{\rm std}$ is the same as that of $Λ^{\rm all}$ for all notions of algebraic and exponential tr…
We study quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods for numerical integration of multivariate functions defined over the high-dimensional unit cube. Lattice rules and polynomial lattice rules, which are special classes of QMC methods, have been intensively studied and the so-called component-by-component (CBC) algorithm has been well-established to construct rules which achieve the almost optimal rate of convergence with good tractability properties for given smoothness and set of weights. Since the CBC algorithm constructs rules for given smoothness and weights, not much is known when such rules are use…

Quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods are equal weight quadrature rules to approximate integrals over the unit cube with respect to the uniform measure. In this paper we discuss QMC integration with respect to general product measures defined on an arbitrary cube. We only require that the cumulative distribution function is invertible. We develop a worst-case error bound and study the dependence of the error on the number of points and the dimension for digital nets and sequences as well as polynomial lattice point sets, which are mapped to the domain using the inverse cumulative distribution functi…
We develop a general framework for estimating the $L_\infty(\mathbb{T}^d)$ error for the approximation of multivariate periodic functions belonging to specific reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RHKS) using approximants that are trigonometric polynomials computed from sampling values. The used sampling schemes are suitable sets of rank-1 lattices that can be constructed in an extremely efficient way. Furthermore, the structure of the sampling schemes allows for fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms. We present and discuss one FFT algorithm and analyze the worst case $L_\infty$ error for this…
In the present paper we study quasi-Monte Carlo rules for approximating integrals over the $d$-dimensional unit cube for functions from weighted Sobolev spaces of regularity one. While the properties of these rules are well understood for anchored Sobolev spaces, this is not the case for the ANOVA spaces, which are another very important type of reference spaces for quasi-Monte Carlo rules. Using a direct approach we provide a formula for the worst case error of quasi-Monte Carlo rules for functions from weighted ANOVA spaces. As a consequence we bound the worst case error from above in terms …
We study kernel quadrature rules with convex weights. Our approach combines the spectral properties of the kernel with recombination results about point measures. This results in effective algorithms that construct convex quadrature rules using only access to i.i.d. samples from the underlying measure and evaluation of the kernel and that result in a small worst-case error. In addition to our theoretical results and the benefits resulting from convex weights, our experiments indicate that this construction can compete with the optimal bounds in well-known examples.
