In the early 1990's, Billera and Sturmfels introduced the monotone path polytope (MPP), a special case of the general theory of fiber polytopes that associates a polytope to a pair $(P,φ)$ of a polytope $P$ and linear functional $φ$. In that same paper, they showed that MPPs of simplices and hyper-cubes are combinatorial cubes and permutahedra respectively. Their work has lead to many developments in combinatorics. Here we investigate the monotone paths for generic orientations of cross-polytopes. We show the face lattice of its MPP is isomorphic to the lattice of intervals in the sign poset from oriented matroid theory. We look at its $f$-vector, its realizations, and facets.
Monotone path polytopes arise as a special case of the construction of fiber polytopes, introduced by Billera and Sturmfels. A simple example is provided by the permutahedron, which is a monotone path polytope of the standard unit cube. The permutahedron is the zonotope polar to the braid arrangement. We show how the zonotopes polar to the cones of certain deformations of the braid arrangement can be realized as monotone path polytopes. The construction is an extension of that of the permutahedron and yields interesting connections between enumerative combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements a…
Every generic linear functional $f$ on a convex polytope $P$ induces an orientation on the graph of $P$. From the resulting directed graph one can define a notion of $f$-arborescence and $f$-monotone path on $P$, as well as a natural graph structure on the vertex set of $f$-monotone paths. These concepts are important in geometric combinatorics and optimization. This paper bounds the number of $f$-arborescences, the number of $f$-monotone paths, and the diameter of the graph of $f$-monotone paths for polytopes $P$ in terms of their dimension and number of vertices or facets.
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem (Klee, 1965) asks if the number M(d,n) of vertices in a monotone path along edges of a d-dimensional polytope with n facets can be as large as conceivably possible: Is M(d,n) = M_{ubt}(d,n), the maximal number of vertices that a d-polytope with n facets can have according to the Upper Bound Theorem? We show that in dimension d=4, the answer is ``yes'', despite the fact that it is ``no'' if we restrict ourselves to the dual-to-cyclic polytopes. For each n>=5, we exhibit a realization of a polar-to-neighborly 4-dimensional polytope with n facets and a Hamilton pa…
Motivated by the problem of bounding the number of iterations of the Simplex algorithm we investigate the possible lengths of monotone paths followed by the Simplex method inside the oriented graphs of polyhedra (oriented by the objective function). We consider both the shortest and the longest monotone paths and estimate the monotone diameter and height of polyhedra. Our analysis applies to transportation polytopes, matroid polytopes, matching polytopes, shortest-path polytopes, and the TSP, among others. We begin by showing that combinatorial cubes have monotone and Bland pivot height bounde…
For a poset P, a subposet A, and an order preserving map F from A into the real numbers, the marked order polytope parametrizes the order preserving extensions of F to P. We show that the function counting integral-valued extensions is a piecewise polynomial in F and we prove a reciprocity statement in terms of order-reversing maps. We apply our results to give a geometric proof of a combinatorial reciprocity for monotone triangles due to Fischer and Riegler (2011) and we consider the enumerative problem of counting extensions of partial graph colorings of Herzberg and Murty (2007).
The diameter of the graph of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P \subseteq [0,k]^{n}$ is known to be at most $dk$ due to work by Kleinschmidt and Onn. However, it is an open question whether the monotone diameter, the shortest guaranteed length of a monotone path, of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P = \{\mathbf{x}: A\mathbf{x} \leq \mathbf{b}\} \subseteq [0,k]^{n}$ is bounded by a polynomial in $d$ and $k$. This question is of particular interest in linear optimization, since paths traced by the Simplex method must be monotone. We introduce partial results in this direction including a …
Motivated by the analysis of the performance of the simplex method we study the behavior of families of pivot rules of linear programs. We introduce normalized-weight pivot rules which are fundamental for the following reasons: First, they are memory-less, in the sense that the pivots are governed by local information encoded by an arborescence. Second, many of the most used pivot rules belong to that class, and we show this subclass is critical for understanding the complexity of all pivot rules. Finally, normalized-weight pivot rules can be parametrized in a natural continuous manner. We sho…
A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid corresponding to a pair of lattice paths on the plane. A matroid base polytope is the polytope whose vertices are the incidence vectors of the bases of the given matroid. In this paper, we study facial structures of matroid base polytopes corresponding to lattice path matroids.
This note studies the geometric structure of monotone moment polytopes (the duals of smooth Fano polytopes) using probes. The latter are line segments that enter the polytope at an interior point of a facet and whose direction is integrally transverse to this facet. A point inside the polytope is displaceable by a probe if it lies less than half way along it. Using a construction due to Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono, we show that every rational polytope has a central point that is not displaceable by probes. In the monotone (or more generally, the reflexive) case, this central point is its unique interio…
The Holt-Klee theorem says that the graph of a $d$-polytope, with edges oriented by a linear function on $P$ that is not constant on any edge, admits $d$ independent monotone paths from the source to the sink. We prove that the digraphs obtained from oriented matroid programs of rank $d+1$ on $n+2$ elements, which include those from $d$-polytopes with $n$ facets, admit $d$ independent monotone paths from source to sink if $d \le 4$. This was previously only known to hold for $d\le 3$ and $n\le 6$.
An $S$-hypersimplex for $S \subseteq \{0,1, \dots,d\}$ is the convex hull of all $0/1$-vectors of length $d$ with coordinate sum in $S$. These polytopes generalize the classical hypersimplices as well as cubes, crosspolytopes, and halfcubes. In this paper we study faces and dissections of $S$-hypersimplices. Moreover, we show that monotone path polytopes of $S$-hypersimplices yield all types of multipermutahedra. In analogy to cubes, we also show that the number of simplices in a pulling triangulation of a halfcube is independent of the pulling order.
It is known that a lattice path matroid polytope can be associated with two given noncrossing lattice paths on $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ with the same end points. In this short note we give explicit formulae for the $f$-vector, toric $f$- and $g$-polynomials of a lattice path matroid polytope when two boundary paths enclose a hook shape.
In this paper we investigate the number of integer points lying in dilations of lattice path matroid polytopes. We give a characterization of such points as polygonal paths in the diagram of the lattice path matroid. Furthermore, we prove that lattice path matroid polytopes are affinely equivalent to a family of distributive polytopes. As applications we obtain two new infinite families of matroids verifying a conjecture of De Loera et.~al. and present an explicit formula of the Ehrhart polynomial for one of them.
We give a partial description of the (s,t)-p-path polytope of a directed graph D which is the convex hull of the incidence vectors of simple directed (s,t)-paths in D of length p. First, we point out how the (s,t)-p-path polytope is located in the family of path and cycle polyhedra. Next, we give some classes of valid inequalities which are very similar to inequalities which are valid for the p-cycle polytope, that is, the convex hull of the incidence vectors of simple cycles of length p in D. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for these inequalities to be facet defining. Furthermore,…
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem asks for the maximal number M(d,n) of vertices on a strictly-increasing edge-path on a simple d-polytope with n facets. More specifically, it asks whether the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) provided by McMullen's (1970) Upper Bound Theorem is tight, where M_{ubt}(d,n) is the number of vertices of a dual-to-cyclic d-polytope with n facets. It was recently shown that the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) holds with equality for small dimensions (d<=4: Pfeifle, 2003) and for small corank (n<=d+2: Gärtner et al., 2001). Here we prove that it is not tight in genera…
Fix two lattice paths $P$ and $Q$ from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ that use East and North steps with $P $ never going above $Q$. Bonin et al. show that the lattice paths that go from $(0,0)$ to $(m,r)$ and remain bounded by $P$ and $Q$ can be identified with the bases of a particular type of transversal matroid, which we call it a lattice path matroid. In this paper, we consider properties of lattice path matroid polytopes. These are the polytopes associated to the lattice path matroids. We investigate their face structure, decomposition, triangulation, Ehrhart polynomial and volume.
A path $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_m$ in a graph $G$ is $degree$-$monotone$ if $deg(v_1) \leq deg(v_2) \leq \cdots \leq deg(v_m)$ where $deg(v_i)$ is the degree of $v_i$ in $G$. Longest degree-monotone paths have been studied in several recent papers. Here we consider the Ramsey type problem for degree monotone paths. Denote by $M_k(m)$ the minimum number $M$ such that for all $n \geq M$, in any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ there is some $1\leq j \leq k$ such that the graph formed by the edges colored $j$ has a degree-monotone path of order $m$. We prove several nontrivial upper and lower bounds for $M_k(…
How long a monotone path can one always find in any edge-ordering of the complete graph $K_n$? This appealing question was first asked by Chvátal and Komlós in 1971, and has since attracted the attention of many researchers, inspiring a variety of related problems. The prevailing conjecture is that one can always find a monotone path of linear length, but until now the best known lower bound was $n^{2/3-o(1)}$. In this paper we almost close this gap, proving that any edge-ordering of the complete graph contains a monotone path of length $n^{1-o(1)}$.
We generalize the well-known "12" and "24" Theorems for reflexive polytopes of dimension 2 and 3 to any smooth reflexive polytope. Our methods apply to a wider category of objects, here called reflexive GKM graphs, that are associated with certain monotone symplectic manifolds which do not necessarily admit a toric action. As an application, we provide bounds on the Betti numbers for certain monotone Hamiltonian spaces which depend on the minimal Chern number of the manifold.
A degree monotone path in a graph $G$ is a path $P$ such that the sequence of degrees of the vertices in the order in which they appear on $P$ is monotonic. The length of the longest degree monotone path in $G$ is denoted by $mp(G)$. This parameter, inspired by the well-known Erdos-Szekeres theorem, has been studied by the authors in two earlier papers. Here we consider a saturation problem for the parameter $mp(G)$. We call $G$ saturated if, for every edge $e$ added to $G$, $mp(G+e) >mp(G)$, and we define $h(n,k)$ to be the least possible number of edges in a saturated graph $G$ on $n$ vertic…
Given a directed graph D = (N, A) and a sequence of positive integers 1 <= c_1 < c_2 < ... < c_m <= |N|, we consider those path and cycle polytopes that are defined as the convex hulls of simple paths and cycles of D of cardinality c_p for some p, respectively. We present integer characterizations of these polytopes by facet defining linear inequalities for which the separation problem can be solved in polynomial time. These inequalities can simply be transformed into inequalities that characterize the integer points of the undirected counterparts of cardinality constrained path and cycle poly…
We shall study degree-monotone paths in graphs, a problem inspired by the celebrated theorem of Erd{ő}s-Szekeres concerning the longest monotone subsequence of a given sequence of numbers. A path P in a graph G is said to be a degree monotone path if the sequence of degrees of the vertices in P in the order they appear in P is monotonic. In this paper we shall consider these three problem related to this parameter: 1. Find bounds on $mp(G)$ in terms of other parameters of $G$. 2. Study $f(n,k)$ defined to be the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices with $mp(G) < k$. 3. Estimate t…
A Viterbi path of length n of a discrete Markov chain is a sequence of n+1 states that has the greatest probability of ocurring in the Markov chain. We divide the space of all Markov chains into Viterbi regions in which two Markov chains are in the same region if they have the same set of Viterbi paths. The Viterbi paths of regions of positive measure are called Viterbi sequences. Our main results are (1) each Viterbi sequence can be divided into a prefix, periodic interior, and suffix, and (2) as n increases to infinity (and the number of states remains fixed), the number of Viterbi regions r…
A path $P$ in a graph $G$ is said to be a degree monotone path if the sequence of degrees of the vertices of $P$ in the order in which they appear on $P$ is monotonic. The length of the longest degree monotone path in $G$ is denoted by $mp(G)$. This parameter was first studied in an earlier paper by the authors where bounds in terms of other parameters of $G$ were obtained. In this paper we concentrate on the study of how $mp(G)$ changes under various operations on $G$. We first consider how $mp(G)$ changes when an edge is deleted, added, contracted or subdivided. We similarly consider the eff…
An edge-ordered graph is a graph with a total ordering of its edges. A path $P=v_1v_2\ldots v_k$ in an edge-ordered graph is called increasing if $(v_iv_{i+1}) > (v_{i+1}v_{i+2})$ for all $i = 1,\ldots,k-2$; it is called decreasing if $(v_iv_{i+1}) < (v_{i+1}v_{i+2})$ for all $i = 1,\ldots,k-2$. We say that $P$ is monotone if it is increasing or decreasing. A rooted tree $T$ in an edge-ordered graph is called monotone if either every path from the root of to a leaf is increasing or every path from the root to a leaf is decreasing. Let $G$ be a graph. In a straight-line drawing $D$ of $G$, its …
The altitude of a graph $G$, denoted $f(G)$, is the largest integer $k$ such that under each ordering of $E(G)$, there exists a path of length $k$ which traverses edges in increasing order. In 1971, Chvátal and Komlós asked for $f(K_n)$, where $K_n$ is the complete graph on $n$ vertices. In 1973, Graham and Kleitman proved that $f(K_n) \ge \sqrt{n - 3/4} - 1/2$ and in 1984, Calderbank, Chung, and Sturtevant proved that $f(K_n) \le (\frac{1}{2} + o(1))n$. We show that $f(K_n) \ge (\frac{1}{20} - o(1))(n/\lg n)^{2/3}$.
The combinatorial diameter of a polytope $P$ is the maximum value of a shortest path between two vertices of $P$, where the path uses the edges of $P$ only. In contrast to the combinatorial diameter, the circuit diameter of $P$ is defined as the maximum value of a shortest path between two vertices of $P$, where the path uses potential edge directions of $P$ i.e., all edge directions that can arise by translating some of the facets of $P$. In this paper, we study the circuit diameter of polytopes corresponding to classical combinatorial optimization problems, such as the Matching polytope, the…
One formulation of the Erdos-Szekeres monotone subsequence theorem states that for any red/blue coloring of the edge set of the complete graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots, N\}$, there exists a monochromatic red $s$-clique or a monochromatic blue increasing path $P_n$ with $n$ vertices, provided $N >(s-1)(n-1)$. %We had previously shown that a suitable generalization of this problem to quadruple systems is essentially equivalent to classical diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Here, we prove a similar statement as above in the off-diagonal case for triple systems, with the quasipolynomial bound $N>2^{c(…
The diamond product is the poset operation that when applied to the face lattices of two polytopes results in the face lattice of the Cartesian product of the polytopes. Application of the diamond product to two Eulerian posets is a bilinear operation on the cd-indices of the two posets, yielding a product on cd-polynomials. A lattice path interpretation is provided for this product of two cd-monomials.
This paper enumerates all juxtaposition classes of the form "Av($abc$) next to Av($xy$)", where $abc$ is a permutation of length three and $xy$ is a permutation of length two. We use Dyck paths decorated by sequences of points to represent elements from such a juxtaposition class. Context-free grammars are then used to enumerate these decorated Dyck paths.
For a lattice path $ν$ from the origin to a point $(a,b)$ using steps $E=(1,0)$ and $N=(0,1)$, we construct an associated flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ arising from an acyclic graph where bidirectional edges are permitted. We show that the flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ admits a subdivision dual to a $w$-simplex, where $w$ is the number of valleys in the path $\barν = EνN$. Refinements of this subdivision can be obtained by reductions of a polynomial $P_ν$ in a generalization of Mészáros' subdivision algebra for acyclic root polytopes where negative roots are allowed. …
We determine the probability thresholds for the existence of monotone paths, of finite and infinite length, in random oriented graphs with vertex set $\mathbb N^{[k]}$, the set of all increasing $k$-tuples in $\mathbb N$. These graphs appear as line graph of uniform hypergraphs with vertex set $\mathbb N$.
(I) We prove that the (maximum) number of monotone paths in a geometric triangulation of $n$ points in the plane is $O(1.7864^n)$. This improves an earlier upper bound of $O(1.8393^n)$; the current best lower bound is $Ω(1.7003^n)$. (II) Given a planar geometric graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, we show that the number of monotone paths in $G$ can be computed in $O(n^2)$ time.
Let $Δ\subset \R^n$ be an $n$-dimensional lattice polytope. It is well-known that $h_Δ^*(t) := (1-t)^{n+1} \sum_{k \geq 0} |kΔ\cap \Z^n| t^k $ is a polynomial of degree $d \leq n$ with nonnegative integral coefficients. Let $AGL(n, \Z)$ be the group of invertible affine integral transformations which naturally acts on $\R^n$. For a given polynomial $h^* \in \Z[t]$, we denote by $C_{h^*}(n)$ the number $AGL(n, \Z)$-equivalence classes of $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes such that $h^* = h_Δ^*(t)$. In this paper we show that $\{C_{h^*}(n) \}_{n \geq 1}$ is a monotone increasing sequence which e…
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph $H$ with a specified linear ordering of the vertices, and the appearance of an ordered hypergraph $G$ in $H$ must respect the specified order on $V(G)$. In on-line Ramsey theory, Builder iteratively presents edges that Painter must immediately color. The $t$-color on-line size Ramsey number $\tilde R_t (G)$ of an ordered hypergraph $G$ is the minimum number of edges Builder needs to play (on a large ordered set of vertices) to force Painter using $t$ colors to produce a monochromatic copy of $G$. The monotone tight path $P_r^{(k)}$ is the ordered hypergrap…
For any sequence of positive integers j_1 < j_2 < ... < j_n, the k-tuples (j_i,j_{i + 1},...,j_{i + k-1}), i=1, 2,..., n - k+1, are said to form a monotone path of length n. Given any integers n\ge k\ge 2 and q\ge 2, what is the smallest integer N with the property that no matter how we color all k-element subsets of [N]=\{1,2,..., N\} with q colors, we can always find a monochromatic monotone path of length n? Denoting this minimum by N_k(q,n), it follows from the seminal 1935 paper of Erd\H os and Szekeres that N_2(q,n)=(n-1)^q+1 and N_3(2,n) = {2n -4\choose n-2} + 1. Determining the other v…
