Steps toward the nature inside RR Lyrae variables can not only improve our understanding of variable stars but also innovate the precision when we use them as tracers to map the structure of the universe. In this work, we develop a hand-crafted one-dimensional pattern recognition pipeline to fetch out the "first apparitions", the most prominent observational characteristic of shock. We report the first detection of hydrogen emission lines in the first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae variables. We find that there is an anti-correlation between the intensity and the radial velocity of the emission signal, which is possibly caused by opacity changing in the helium ionization zone. Moreover, we find one RRd star with hydrogen emission that possibly shows Blazhko-type modulations. According to our discoveries, with an enormous volume of upcoming data releases of variable stars and spectra, it may become possible to build up the bridge between shock waves and big problems like the Blazhko effect in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars.
Hydrogen emissions of RR Lyrae variables are the imprints of shock waves traveling through their atmospheres. We develop a pattern recognition algorithm, which is then applied to single-epoch spectra of SDSS and LAMOST. These two spectroscopic surveys covered $\sim$ 10,000 photometrically confirmed RR Lyrae stars. We discovered in total 127 RR Lyrae stars with blueshifted Balmer emission feature, including 103 fundamental mode (RRab), 20 first-overtone (RRc), 3 double-mode (RRd), and 1 Blazhko type (temporary classification for RR Lyrae stars with strong Blazhko modulation in Catalina sky surv…
The LAMOST spectroscopic survey for Galactic structure and evolution has been in operation since October 2012, following a one-year pilot survey. The pilot survey produced a data release containing over 600,000 stellar spectra. By cross-checking with a large time series photometric database of RR Lyrae stars in high Galactic latitude regions, we found a total number of 157 stars that have been observed with LAMOST. In this sample, we successfully captured three RR Lyrae stars in the fast expansion phase, all of them showing significant hypersonic shock wave features in the spectra. By fitting …
Homogeneous metallicities and continuous high-precision light curves play key roles in studying the pulsation properties of RR Lyrae stars. By cross-matching with LAMOST DR6, we have determined 7 and 50 Non-Blazhko RRab stars in the Kepler and K2 fields, respectively, who have homogeneous metallicities determined from low-resolution spectra of the LAMOST-Kepler/K2 project. The Fourier Decomposition method is applied to the light curves of these stars provided by the Kepler space based telescope to determine the fundamental pulsation periods and the pulsation parameters. The calculated amplitud…
The nature of shock waves in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars remains a mystery because of limited spectroscopic observations. We apply a pattern recognition algorithm on spectroscopic data from SDSS and LAMOST and report the first evidence of hydrogen emission in first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the "first apparition", which is the most prominent observational characteristic of shock in RR Lyrae variables. We find ten RRc stars in SDSS, ten RRc stars in LAMOST, and three RRd stars in LAMOST that show blueshifted Balmer emissions. The emission features possibly indicate …
We present the results of our Johnson B and V observations of three RR Lyrae candidate stars that we identified as likely variable stars using SDSS data. The stars were selected based upon a single epoch of photometry and spectroscopy. The stars were observed at McDonald Observatory to obtain full light curves. We present full light curves, measured periods, and amplitudes, as well as the results of our Fourier analysis of the light curves.
We present a calibration of the metallicity and physical parameters (temperature, luminosity, gravity, mass, radius) for RR Lyrae stars using the ugriz SDSS photometric system. Our work is based on calculations of synthetic horizontal branches (HBs), fully taking into account evolutionary effects for a wide range in metallicities and HB morphologies. We provide analytical fits that are able to provide all quantities mentioned with very high (internal) precision, based solely on mean SDSS magnitudes and colors.
We present template radial velocity curves of $ab$-type RR Lyrae stars constructed from high-precision measurements of ${\rm Hα}$, ${\rm Hβ}$, and ${\rm Hγ}$ lines. Amplitude correlations between the Balmer line velocity curves, Johnson $V$-band, and SDSS $g$- and $r$-band light curves are also derived. Compared to previous methods, these templates and derived correlations reduce the uncertainty in measured systemic (center-of-mass) velocities of RR Lyrae stars by up to 15 {\kms}, and will be of particular interest to wide-area spectroscopic surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) …
We present and discuss an extensive data set for the non-Blazhko ab-type RR Lyrae star SDSSJ015450+001501, including optical SDSS ugriz light curves and spectroscopic data, LINEAR and CSS unfiltered optical light curves, and infrared 2MASS JHKs and WISE W1 and W2 light curves. Most notably, light curves obtained by 2MASS include close to 9000 photometric measures collected over 3.3 years and provide exceedingly precise view of near-IR variability. These data demonstrate that static atmosphere models are insufficient to explain multi-band photometric light curve behavior and present strong cons…
Context. White dwarf-main sequence (WDMS) binaries are used to study several different important open problems in modern astrophysics. Aims. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) identified the largest catalogue of WDMS binaries currently known. However, this sample is seriously affected by selection effects and the population of systems containing cool white dwarfs and early-type companions is under-represented.Here we search for WDMS binaries within the spectroscopic data release 1 of the LAMOST (Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) survey. LAMOST and SDSS follow differen…
We selected 82 u-band variable objects based on the u-band photometry data from SCUSS and SDSS, in the field of LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area at Southern Galactic Cap. The magnitude variation of the targets is restricted to larger than 0.2 mag and limiting magnitude down to 19.0 mag in u-band. According to the spectra from LAMOST, there are 11 quasars with red-shift between 0.4 and 1.8, 60 variable stars and 11 unidentified targets. The variable stars include one active M-dwarf with a series of Balmer emission lines, seven Horizontal Branch stars containing six RR Lyrae…
The behavior of the shock wave in the atmosphere of the non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae pulsator remains a mystery. In this work, we firstly report a blueshifted Mg triplet emission in continuous spectroscopic observations for a non-Blazhko RRc pulsator (Catalina-1104058050978) with LAMOST medium resolution spectra. We analyse the photometric observations from Catalina Sky Survey of this RRc pulsator with pre-whitening sequence method and provide the ephemeris and phases. An additional frequency signal with $P_1/P_x = 0.69841$ is detected and discussed. The redshift and radial velocity of the sp…
We have identified several tens of extremely metal-poor star candidates from SDSS and LAMOST, which we follow-up with the 4.2m WHT telescope to confirm their metallicity. We follow a robust two-step methodology. We first analyze the SDSS and LAMOST spectra. A first set of stellar parameters is derived from these spectra with the FERRE code, taking advantage of the continuum shape to determine the atmospheric parameters, in particular, the effective temperature. Second, we select interesting targets for follow-up observations, some of them with very low-quality SDSS or LAMOST data. We then obtai…
Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the $(V-R)_{MACHO}$ or $(V-I)$ colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by a…
In Gentile Fusillo et al. (2015) we developed a selection method for white dwarf candidates which makes use of photometry, colours and proper motions to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf (Pwd). The application of our method to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 10 resulted in nearly 66,000 photometrically selected objects with a derived Pwd, approximately 21000 of which are high confidence white dwarf candidates. Here we present an independent test of our selection method based on a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the LAMOST (Large Sky Area Mu…
Spectra of 76 known dwarf novae from the LAMOST survey were presented. Most of the objects were observed in quiescence, and about 16 systems have typical outburst spectra. 36 of these systems were observed by SDSS, and most of their spectra are similar to the SDSS spectra. 2 objects, V367 Peg and V537 Peg, are the first to observe their spectra. The spectrum of V367 Peg shows a contribution from a M-type donor and its spectral type could be estimated as M3-5 by combining its orbital period. The signature of white dwarf spectrum can be seen clearly in four low-accretion-rate WZ Sge stars. Other…
EZ Cnc, or EPIC 212182292, is a non-Blazhko RRab variable star located in the field of K2 Campaign 16. Its atmospheric parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, $\log{g}$, [M/H]) and radial velocities are measured from the 55 high-quality LAMOST medium-resolution spectra. The fundamental frequency of pulsation is derived as $f=1.8323(17)$ d$^{-1}$ from the K2 light curves. The amplitude ratios $R_{21} = 0.5115(15), 0.490(8)$, $R_{31} = 0.3249(20), 0.279(7)$ and Fourier phase differences $φ_{21}=2.7550(20), 2.764(16)$, $φ_{31}=5.7194(25), 5.719(31)$ are determined from the Fourier decomposition of K2 light cu…
A sample of Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) is presented including spectroscopically identified 380 spectra of 245 objects, of which 58 CV candidates are new discoveries. The BaggingTopPush and the Random Forest algorithms are applied to the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of LAMOST to retrieve CVs with strong emission lines and with broad absorption lines respectively. Based on spectroscopic classification, 134 dwarf novae, 41 nova-like variables and 19 magnetic CVs are identified from the sample. In addition, 89 high--inclination systems and 33 CVs showing companion stars are recognized and discussed f…
We present a chemo-dynamical study of the Orphan stellar stream using a catalog of RR~Lyrae pulsating variable stars for which photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic data are available. Employing low-resolution spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined line-of-sight velocities for individual exposures and derived the systemic velocities of the RR~Lyrae stars. In combination with the stars' spectroscopic metallicities and \textit{Gaia} EDR3 astrometry, we investigated the northern part of the Orphan stream. In our probabilistic approach, we found 20 single mode RR~Lyr…
Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have been discovered for almost a century, but their nature remains one of the most challenging problems in astronomical spectroscopy. Most recent work to identify and investigate the properties and carriers of DIBs concentrates on high-resolution spectroscopy of selected sight-lines. In this paper, we report detections of DIBs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) low-resolution spectra of a large sample of Galactic stars. Using a template subtraction method, we have successfully identified the DIBs $λ$$λ$5780, 6283 in the SDSS spectra of a sample of about 2…
We have investigated the feasibilities and accuracies of the identifications of RR Lyrae stars and quasars from the simulated data of the Multi-channel Photometric Survey Telescope (Mephisto) W Survey. Based on the variable sources light curve libraries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 data and the observation history simulation from the Mephisto-W Survey Scheduler, we have simulated the $uvgriz$ multi-band light curves of RR Lyrae stars, quasars and other variable sources for the first year observation of Mephisto-W Survey. We have applied the ensemble machine learning algor…
Certain carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars likely obtained their composition via pollution from some of the earliest generations of asymptotic giant branch stars and as such provide important clues to early Universe nucleosynthesis. Recently, Kinman et al. discovered that the highly carbon- and barium-enriched metal-poor star SDSS J1707+58 is in fact an RR Lyrae pulsator. This gives us an object in a definite evolutionary state where the effects of dilution of material during the Main Sequence are minimised owing to the object having passed through first dredge-up. We perform detailed stellar mo…
The identification and analysis of different variable sources is a hot issue in astrophysical research. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) spectroscopic survey has accumulated massive spectral data but contains no information about variable sources. Although a few related studies present variable source catalogs for the LAMOST, the studies still have a few deficiencies regarding the type and number of variable sources identified. In this study, we presented a statistical modeling approach to identify variable source candidates. We first crossed the Kepler, S…
The light variations of first-overtone RR Lyrae stars and contact eclipsing binaries can be difficult to distinguish. The Catalina Periodic Variable Star catalog contains several misclassified objects, despite the classification efforts by Drake et al. (2014). They used metallicity and surface gravity derived from spectroscopic data (from the SDSS database) to rule out binaries. Our aim is to further constrain the catalog using SDSS colours to estimate physical parameters for stars that did not have spectroscopic data.
We present a semi-empirical spectral classification scheme for normal B-type stars using near-infrared spectra (1.5-1.7 $μ$m) from the SDSS APOGEE2-N DR14 database. The main motivation for working with B-type stars is their importance in the evolution of young stellar clusters, however we also take advantage of having a numerous sample (316 stars) of B-type star candidates in APOGEE2-N, for which we also have optical (3600-9100 \angstrom) counterparts from the LAMOST survey. By first obtaining an accurate spectral classification of the sources using the LAMOST DR3 spectra and the canonical spe…
We report estimated carbon-abundance ratios, [C/Fe], for seven newly-discovered carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) RR Lyrae stars. These are well-studied RRab stars that had previously been selected as CEMP candidates based on low-resolution spectra. For this pilot study, we observed eight of these CEMP RR Lyrae candidates with the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3m telescope. Prior to this study, only two CEMP RR Lyrae stars had been discovered: TY Gru and SDSS J1707+58. We compare our abundances to new theoretical models of the evolution of low-mass stars in binary systems. These…
We present the ultraviolet magnitudes for over three million stars in the LAMOST survey, in which 2,202,116 stars are detected by $GALEX$. For 889,235 undetected stars, we develop a method to estimate their upper limit magnitudes. The distribution of (FUV $-$ NUV) shows that the color declines with increasing effective temperature for stars hotter than 7000 K in our sample, while the trend disappears for the cooler stars due to upper atmosphere emission from the regions higher than their photospheres. For stars with valid stellar parameters, we calculate the UV excesses with synthetic model sp…
We present a catalog of 5,290 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with metallicities estimated from spectra of the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (LEGUE) and the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) surveys. Nearly 70 per cent of them (3,642 objects) also have systemic radial velocities measured. Given the pulsating nature of RRLs, metallicity estimates are based on spectra of individual exposures, by matching them with the synthetic templates. The systemic radial velocities are measured by fitting the observed velocity as a function of phase assum…
A number of spectroscopic surveys have been carried out or are planned to study the origin of the Milky Way. Their exploitation requires reliable automated methods and softwares to measure the fundamental parameters of the stars. Adopting the ULySS package, we have tested the effect of different resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) on the measurement of the stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H]). We show that ULySS is reliable to determine these parameters with medium-resolution spectra (R~2000). Then, we applied the m…
We present the results of a search for extremely metal-poor (EMP), carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP), and cataclysmic variable (CV) stars using a new exploration tool based on linked scatter plots (LSPs). Our approach is especially designed to work with very large spectrum data sets such as the SDSS, LAMOST, RAVE, and Gaia data sets, and it can be applied to stellar, galaxy, and quasar spectra. As a demonstration, we conduct our search using the SDSS DR10 data set. We first created a 3326-dimensional phase space containing nearly 2 billion measures of the strengths of over 1600 spectral featur…
We analyze the kinematics of thick disk and halo stars observed by the Large sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope. We have constructed a sample of 7,993 F, G and K nearby main-sequence stars (\textit{d} $<$ 2 kpc) with estimates of position (x, y, z) and space velocity ($U$, $V$, $W$) based on color and proper motion from the SDSS DR9 catalog. Three `phase-space overdensities' are identified in [\textit{V}, $\sqrt{U^{2}+2V^{2}}$] with significance levels of $σ$ $>$ 3. %[L$_{Z}$, eccentricity], [L$_{Z}$, L$_{\bot}$], and [V$_{az}$, V$_{\triangle}E$]. Two of them (Hyades-Pleiades …
Binaries play key roles in determining stellar parameters and exploring stellar evolution models. We build a catalog of 88 eclipsing binaries with spectroscopic information, taking advantage of observations from both the Large Sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) surveys. A software pipeline is constructed to identify binary candidates by examining their light curves. The orbital periods of binaries are derived from the Lomb-Scargle method. The key distinguishing features of eclipsing binaries are recognized by a new filter \texti…
We propose a Stellar Locus OuTlier (SLOT) method to determine the binary fraction of main-sequence stars statistically. The method is sensitive to neither the period nor mass-ratio distributions of binaries, and able to provide model-free estimates of binary fraction for large numbers of stars of different populations in large survey volumes. We have applied the SLOT method to two samples of stars from the SDSS Stripe 82, constructed by combining the re-calibrated SDSS photometric data with respectively the spectroscopic information from the SDSS and LAMOST surveys. For the SDSS spectroscopic …
We identify 51 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars, 12 possible BHB stars and 58 RR Lyrae stars in Anticentre fields. Their selection does not depend on their kinematics. Light curves and ephemerides are given for 7 previously unknown RR Lyrae stars. All but 4 of the RR Lyrae stars are of Oosterhoff type I. Our selection criteria for BHB stars give results that agree with those used by Smith et al. (2010) and Ruhland et al. (2011). We use 5 methods to determine distances for the BHB stars and 3 methods for the RR Lyrae stars to get distances on a uniform scale. Absolute proper motions (largely …
We have compared the stellar parameters, temperature, gravity and metallicity, between the LAMOST-DR2 and SDSS-DR12/APOGEE database for stars in common. It is found that the LAMOST database provides a better red-clump feature than the APOGEE database in the Teff versus logg diagram. With this advantage, we have separated red clump stars from red giant stars, and attempt to establish the calibrations between the two datasets for the two groups of stars respectively. It shows that there is a good consistency in temperature with a calibration close to the one-to-one line, and we can establish a s…
We report on the analysis of ~22,000 M dwarfs using a statistical parallax method. This technique employs a maximum-likelihood formulation to simultaneously solve for the absolute magnitude, velocity ellipsoid parameters and reflex solar motion of a homogeneous stellar sample, and has previously been applied to Galactic RR Lyrae and Cepheid populations and to the Palomar/Michigan State University (PMSU) survey of nearby low-mass stars. We analyze subsamples of the most recent spectroscopic catalog of M dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to determine absolute magnitudes and kinematic…
We describe photometric recalibration of data obtained by the asteroid survey LINEAR. Although LINEAR was designed for astrometric discovery of moving objects, the dataset described here contains over 5 billion photometric measurements for about 25 million objects, mostly stars. We use SDSS data from the overlapping ~10,000 deg^2 of sky to recalibrate LINEAR photometry, and achieve errors of 0.03 mag for sources not limited by photon statistics, with errors of 0.2 mag at r~18. With its 200 observations per object on average, LINEAR data provide time domain information for the brightest 4 magni…
We report on a pilot study on identifying metal-poor stars pre-enriched by Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISNe). Very massive, first generation (Population III) stars (140M\odot \leq M \leq 260M\odot) end their lives as PISNe, which have been predicted by theories, but no relics of PISNe have been observed yet. Among the distinct characteristics of the yields of PISN, as predicted by theoretical calculations, are a strong odd-even effect, and a strong overabundance of Ca with respect to iron and the Solar ratio. We use the latter characteristic to identify metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo …
We investigate the dependence of the complete system of 22 Lick indices on overall metallicity scaled from solar abundances, [M/H], from the solar value, 0.0, down to the extremely-metal-poor (XMP) value of -6.0, for late-type giant stars (MK luminosity class III, log(g)=2.0) of MK spectral class late-K to late-F (3750 < Teff < 6500 K) of the type that are detected as "fossils" of early galaxy formation in the Galactic halo and in extra-galactic structures. Our investigation is based on synthetic index values, I, derived from atmospheric models and synthetic spectra computed with PHOENIX in LT…
We estimate the fraction of F,G,K stars with close binary companions by analysing multi-epoch stellar spectra from SDSS and LAMOST for radial velocity (RV) variations. We employ a Bayesian method to infer the maximum likelihood of the fraction of binary stars with orbital periods of 1000 days or shorter, assuming a simple model distribution for a binary population with circular orbits. The overall inferred fraction of stars with such a close binary companion is 43.0% \pm 2.0% for a sample of F, G, K stars from SDSS SEGUE, and 30% \pm 8.0% in a similar sample from LAMOST. The apparent close bin…
APOGEE-2 is a high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic survey observing roughly 300,000 stars across the entire sky. It is the successor to APOGEE and is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). APOGEE-2 is expanding upon APOGEE's goals of addressing critical questions of stellar astrophysics, stellar populations, and Galactic chemodynamical evolution using (1) an enhanced set of target types and (2) a second spectrograph at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. APOGEE-2 is targeting red giant branch (RGB) and red clump (RC) stars, RR Lyrae, low-mass dwarf stars, young stellar objec…
Due to the ever-expanding volume of observed spectroscopic data from surveys such as SDSS and LAMOST, it has become important to apply artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for analysing stellar spectra to solve spectral classification and regression problems like the determination of stellar atmospheric parameters Teff, log g, [Fe/H]. We propose an automated approach for the classification of stellar spectra in the optical region using Convolutional Neural Networks. Traditional machine learning (ML) methods with "shallow" architecture (usually up to 2 hidden layers) have been trained for th…
Stellar spectral classification is a fundamental tool of modern astronomy, providing insight into physical characteristics such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. Accurate and fast spectral typing is an integral need for large all-sky spectroscopic surveys like the SDSS and LAMOST. Here, we present the next version of PyHammer, stellar spectral classification software that uses optical spectral templates and spectral line index measurements. PyHammer v2.0 extends the classification power to include carbon (C) stars, DA white dwarf (WD) stars, and also double-lined spec…
We collected a large data set of field RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) by using catalogues already available in the literature and Gaia DR2. We estimated the iron abundances for a sub-sample of 2,382 fundamental RRLs ($Δ$S method: CaIIK, H$β$, H$γ$ and H$δ$ lines) for which are publicly available medium-resolution SDSS-SEGUE spectra. We also included similar estimates available in the literature ending up with the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set ever collected for RRLs (2,903). The metallicity scale was validated by using iron abundances based on high resolution spectra for a fundame…
We study blue horizontal branch (BHB) and RR Lyrae stars in the Rogers et al. (1993a) fields and compare their velocity and density distributions with other surveys in the same part of the sky. Photometric data are given for 176 early-type stars in the northern field. We identify fourteen BHB stars and four possible BHB stars, and determine the selection efficiency of the Century Survey, the HK Survey, and the SDSS survey for BHB stars. We give light curves and γ-radial velocities for three type-ab RR Lyrae stars in the northern field; comparison with the nearby LONEOS Survey shows that there …
