We present a semi-empirical spectral classification scheme for normal B-type stars using near-infrared spectra (1.5-1.7 $μ$m) from the SDSS APOGEE2-N DR14 database. The main motivation for working with B-type stars is their importance in the evolution of young stellar clusters, however we also take advantage of having a numerous sample (316 stars) of B-type star candidates in APOGEE2-N, for which we also have optical (3600-9100 \angstrom) counterparts from the LAMOST survey. By first obtaining an accurate spectral classification of the sources using the LAMOST DR3 spectra and the canonical spectral classification scheme Gray & Corbally 2009, we found a linear relation between optical spectral types and the equivalent widths of the hydrogen lines of the Brackett series in the APOGEE2-N NIR spectra. This relation extends smoothly from a similar relation for O and early-B stars found by Roman-Lopes et al. (2018). This way, we obtain a catalog of B-type sources with features in both the optical and NIR, and a classification scheme refined down to one spectral sub-class.
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (SDSS-III/APOGEE) is a large-scale spectroscopic survey of Galactic stars and star clusters. The SDSS-III/APOGEE survey is designed to produce high-S/N, R = 27,500-31,000 spectra that cover a wavelength range of 1.51 to 1.68 microns. By utilizing APOGEE's excellent kinematics (error <= 0.5 km/s) and abundances (errors ~ 0.1 dex), we will be able to study star cluster kinematics and chemical properties in detail. Over the course of the 3-year survey beginning in 2011, APOGEE will target 25-30 key open and gl…
APOGEE-2 is a high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic survey observing roughly 300,000 stars across the entire sky. It is the successor to APOGEE and is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). APOGEE-2 is expanding upon APOGEE's goals of addressing critical questions of stellar astrophysics, stellar populations, and Galactic chemodynamical evolution using (1) an enhanced set of target types and (2) a second spectrograph at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. APOGEE-2 is targeting red giant branch (RGB) and red clump (RC) stars, RR Lyrae, low-mass dwarf stars, young stellar objec…
In this paper, we analyze 10 globular clusters in order to measure their rotational properties by using high precision radial velocity data from the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey. Out of the 10 clusters we were able to successfully measure the rotation speed and position angle of the rotation axis for 9 clusters (M2, M3, M5, M12, M13, M15, M53, M92, M107). The comparison between our results and previous ones shows a really good agreement within our uncertainties. For four of the globular clusters, M3, M13, M5 and M15, we separated the sample into two generation of stars using their [Al/Fe] abundance…
We report 23 stars having Galactocentric velocities larger than $450~\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$ in the final data release of the APOGEE survey. This sample was generated using space velocities derived by complementing the high quality radial velocities from the APOGEE project in Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Data Release 17 (DR17) with distances and proper motions from Gaia early Data Release 3 (eDR3). We analyze the observed kinematics and derived dynamics of these stars, considering different potential models for the Galaxy. We find that three stars could be unbound depending on the adopted potential…
We identify six new CEMP stars ([C/Fe]>+0.7 and [Fe/H]< -1.8) and another seven likely candidates within the APOGEE database following Data Release 12. These stars have chemical compositions typical of metal-poor halo stars, e.g., mean [$α$/Fe] = +0.24$\pm$0.24, based on the ASPCAP pipeline results. A lack of heavy element spectral lines impedes further sub-classification of these CEMP stars, however, based on radial velocity scatter, we predict most are not CEMP-s stars which are typically found in binary systems. Only one object, 2M15312547+4220551, may be in a binary since it exhibits a sca…
We present the $H$-band spectral line lists adopted by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The APOGEE line lists comprise astrophysical, theoretical, and laboratory sources from the literature, as well as newly evaluated astrophysical oscillator strengths and damping parameters. We discuss the construction of the APOGEE line list, which is one of the critical inputs for the APOGEE Stellar Parameters and Chemical Abundances Pipeline, and present three different versions that have been used at various stages of the project. The methodology for the newly calculate…
We present new identifications of five red giant stars in the Galactic halo with chemical abundance patterns that indicate they originally formed in globular clusters. Using data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) Survey available through Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (DR12), we first identify likely halo giants, and then search those for the well-known chemical tags associated with globular clusters, specifically enrichment in nitrogen and aluminum. We find that 2% of the halo giants in our sample have this chemical signature, in agreement with…
APOGEE-2 is a dual-hemisphere, near-infrared (NIR), spectroscopic survey with the goal of producing a chemo-dynamical mapping of the Milky Way Galaxy. The targeting for APOGEE-2 is complex and has evolved with time. In this paper, we present the updates and additions to the initial targeting strategy for APOGEE-2N presented in Zasowski et al. (2017). These modifications come in two implementation modes: (i) "Ancillary Science Programs" competitively awarded to SDSS-IV PIs through proposal calls in 2015 and 2017 for the pursuit of new scientific avenues outside the main survey, and (ii) an effe…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) APOGEE-2 primary science goal was to observe red giant stars throughout the Galaxy to study its dynamics, morphology, and chemical evolution. The APOGEE instrument, a high-resolution 300 fiber H-band (1.55-1.71 micron) spectrograph, is also ideal to study other stellar populations in the Galaxy, among which are a number of star forming regions and young open clusters. We present the results of the determination of six stellar properties ($T_{eff}$, $\log{g}$, [Fe/H], $L/L_\odot$, $M/M_\odot$, and ages) for a sample that is composed of 3360 young stars,…
We report on magnetic field measurements of 157 chemically peculiar A/B stars (Ap/Bp) based on resolved, magnetically split absorption lines present in $H$-band spectra provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. These stars represent the extreme magnetic end of a still-growing sample of >900 Ap/Bp stars selected among the APOGEE telluric standard stars as those with Ce III absorption lines and/or literature Ap/Bp classifications. The lines most frequently resolved into their split components for these stars in the $H$…
A precise interstellar dust extinction law is critically important to interpret observations. There are two indicators of extinction: the color excess ratio (CER) and the relative extinction. Compared to the CER, the wavelength-dependent relative extinction is more challenging to be determined. In this work, we combine spectroscopic, astrometric, and photometric data to derive high-precision CERs and relative extinction from optical to mid-infrared (IR) bands. A group of 61,111 red clump (RC) stars are selected as tracers by stellar parameters from APOGEE survey. The multiband photometric data…
The history of the Milky Way is encoded in the spatial distributions, kinematics, and chemical enrichment patterns of its resolved stellar populations. SEGUE-2 and APOGEE, two of the four surveys that comprise SDSS-III (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III), will map these distributions and enrichment patterns at optical and infrared wavelengths, respectively. Using the existing SDSS spectrographs, SEGUE-2 will obtain spectra of 140,000 stars in selected high-latitude fields to a magnitude limit r ~ 19.5, more than doubling the sample of distant halo stars observed in the SDSS-II survey SEGUE (the…
The SDSS-III APOGEE collaboration has identified a single useable line in the H-band spectra of APOGEE target stars arising from a singly ionized species. This line of Ti II ($λ_{air}$ = 15873.84 Å) is therefore of great importance for use in stellar surface gravity, or log(g), determinations via the Saha equation. While a theoretical estimate of the line strength exists, to date no laboratory measurement of the line strength has been reported. Herein we report an absolute laboratory transition probability measurement for this important Ti II line. A relative line strength measurement is made …
We report on $H$-band spectra of chemically peculiar Mercury-Manganese (HgMn) stars obtained via the SDSS/APOGEE survey. As opposed to other varieties of chemically peculiar stars such as classical Ap/Bp stars, HgMn stars lack strong magnetic fields and are defined by extreme overabundances of Mn, Hg, and other heavy elements. A satisfactory explanation for the abundance patterns remains to be determined, but low rotational velocity is a requirement and involvement in binary/multiple systems may be as well. The APOGEE HgMn sample currently consists of 269 stars that were identified among the t…
The SDSS-III Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) is a three year survey that is collecting 100,000 high-resolution spectra in the near-IR across multiple Galactic populations. To derive stellar parameters and chemical compositions from this massive data set, the APOGEE Stellar Parameters and Chemical Abundances Pipeline (ASPCAP) has been developed. Here, we describe empirical calibrations of stellar parameters presented in the first SDSS-III APOGEE data release (DR10). These calibrations were enabled by observations of 559 stars in 20 globular and open clusters. The…
Data from the SDSS-IV / Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) have been released as part of SDSS Data Releases 13 (DR13) and 14 (DR14). These include high resolution H-band spectra, radial velocities, and derived stellar parameters and abundances. DR13, released in August 2016, contained APOGEE data for roughly 150,000 stars, and DR14, released in August 2017, added about 110,000 more. Stellar parameters and abundances have been derived with an automated pipeline, the APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline (ASPCAP). We evaluate the performance of t…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey--III (SDSS--III) Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) has obtained high resolution (R $\sim$ 22,500), high signal-to-noise ratio ($>$ 100) spectra in the H$-$band ($\sim$1.5$-$1.7 $μ$m) for about 146,000 stars in the Milky Way galaxy. We have computed spectral libraries with effective temperature ($T\rm{_{eff}}$) ranging from 3500 to 8000 K for the automated chemical analy\-sis of the survey data. The libraries, used to derive stellar parameters and abundances from the APOGEE spectra in the SDSS--III data release 12 (DR12), are based on A…
The SDSS-III/APOGEE survey operated from 2011-2014 using the APOGEE spectrograph, which collects high-resolution (R~22,500), near-IR (1.51-1.70 microns) spectra with a multiplexing (300 fiber-fed objects) capability. We describe the survey data products that are publicly available, which include catalogs with radial velocity, stellar parameters, and 15 elemental abundances for over 150,000 stars, as well as the more than 500,000 spectra from which these quantities are derived. Calibration relations for the stellar parameters (Teff, log g, [M/H], [alpha/M]) and abundances (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, …

Binary stars make up a significant portion of all stellar systems. Consequently, an understanding of the bulk properties of binary stars is necessary for a full picture of star formation. Binary surveys indicate that both multiplicity fraction and typical orbital separation increase as functions of primary mass. Correlations with higher order architectural parameters such as mass ratio are less well constrained. We seek to identify and characterize double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) among the 1350 M dwarf ancillary science targets with APOGEE spectra in the SDSS-III Data Release 13. We…
We report the discovery of a new example of the rare class of highly magnetized, rapidly rotating, helium enhanced, early B stars that produce anomalously wide hydrogen emission due to a centrifugal magnetosphere (CM). The star is Trumpler 16-26, a B1.5 V member of the Trumpler 16 open cluster. A CM was initially suspected based on hydrogen Brackett series emission observed in SDSS/APOGEE $H$-band spectra. Similar to the other stars of this type, the emission was highly variable and at all times remarkable due to the extreme velocity separations of the double peaks (up to 1300 km s$^{-1}$.) An…

We are carrying out a large ancillary program with the SDSS-III, using the fiber-fed multi-object NIR APOGEE spectrograph, to obtain high-resolution H-band spectra of more than 1200 M dwarfs. These observations are used to measure spectroscopic rotational velocities, radial velocities, physical stellar parameters, and variability of the target stars. Here, we describe the target selection for this survey and results from the first year of scientific observations based on spectra that is publicly available in the SDSS-III DR10 data release. As part of this paper we present RVs and vsini of over…
APOGEE has amassed the largest ever collection of multi-epoch, high-resolution (R~22,500), H-band spectra for B-type emission line (Be) stars. The 128/238 APOGEE Be stars for which emission had never previously been reported serve to increase the total number of known Be stars by ~6%. We focus on identification of the H-band lines and analysis of the emission peak velocity separations (v_p) and emission peak intensity ratios (V/R) of the usually double-peaked H I and non-hydrogen emission lines. H I Br11 emission is found to preferentially form in the circumstellar disks at an average distance…
High-resolution H-band spectra of five bright field K, M, and MS giants, obtained from the archives of the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), are analyzed to determine chemical abundances of 16 elements. The abundances were derived via spectrum synthesis using the detailed linelist prepared for the SDSS III Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), which is a high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopic survey to derive detailed chemical abundance distributions and precise radial velocities for 100,000 red giants sampling all Galactic stellar …
Large scale surveys open the possibility to investigate Galactic evolution both chemically and kinematically, however, reliable stellar ages remain a major challenge. Detailed chemical information provided by high-resolution spectroscopic surveys of the stars in clusters can be used as a means to calibrate recently developed chemical tools for age-dating field stars. Using data from the Open Cluster Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey, based on the SDSS/APOGEE-2 survey, we derive a new empirical relationship between open cluster stellar ages and the carbon-to-nitrogen ([C/N]) abundance ratio…
We report the first detailed chemical abundance analysis of the exoplanet-hosting M-dwarf stars Kepler-138 and Kepler-186 from the analysis of high-resolution ($R$ $\sim$ 22,500) $H$-band spectra from the SDSS IV - APOGEE survey. Chemical abundances of thirteen elements - C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe - are extracted from the APOGEE spectra of these early M-dwarfs via spectrum syntheses computed with an improved line list that takes into account H$_{2}$O and FeH lines. This paper demonstrates that APOGEE spectra can be analyzed to determine detailed chemical compositions o…
We present a study of metallicities in a sample of main sequence stars with spectral types M, K, G and F ($T_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 3200 -- 6500K and log $g$ $\sim$ 4.3 -- 5.0 dex) belonging to the solar neighborhood young open cluster Coma Berenices. Metallicities were determined using the high-resolution (R=$λ$/$Δ$ $λ$ $\sim$ 22,500) NIR spectra ($λ$1.51 -- $λ$1.69 $μ$m) of the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey. Membership to the cluster was confirmed using previous studies in the literature along with APOGEE radial velocities and Gaia DR2. An LTE analysis using plane-parallel MARCS model atmospheres and the…

Individual chemical abundances for fourteen elements (C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni) are derived for a sample of M-dwarfs using high-resolution near-infrared $H$-band spectra from the SDSS-IV/APOGEE survey. The quantitative analysis included synthetic spectra computed with 1-D LTE plane-parallel MARCS models using the APOGEE DR17 line list to determine chemical abundances. The sample consists of eleven M-dwarfs in binary systems with warmer FGK-dwarf primaries and ten measured interferometric angular diameters. To minimize atomic diffusion effects, [X/Fe] ratios are us…
We present elemental abundance analysis of high-resolution spectra for five giant stars, deriving Fe, Mg, Al, C, N, O, Si and Ce abundances, and spatially located within the innermost regions of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6522, based on H-band spectra taken with the multi-object APOGEE-north spectrograph from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. Of the five cluster candidates, two previously unremarked stars are confirmed to have second-generation (SG) abundance patterns, with the basic pattern of depletion in C and Mg simultaneous with enrich…
We present analyses of near-infrared, spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey for 45 previously confirmed or candidate white dwarf-main sequence (WDMS) binaries identified by the optical SDSS and LAMOST surveys. Among these 45 systems, we classify three as having red giant primaries in the LAMOST sample and fourteen to be young stellar object contaminants in the photometrically identified SDSS sample. From among the subsample of 28 systems that we confirm to have MS primaries, we derive and place limits on orbital periods and velocity …
Data and analysis methodology used for the SDSS/APOGEE Data Releases 13 and 14 are described, highlighting differences from the DR12 analysis presented in Holtzman (2015). Some improvement in the handling of telluric absorption and persistence is demonstrated. The derivation and calibration of stellar parameters, chemical abundances, and respective uncertainties are described, along with the ranges over which calibration was performed. Some known issues with the public data related to the calibration of the effective temperatures (DR13), surface gravity (DR13 and DR14), and C and N abundances …
The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) has built the largest moderately high-resolution (R=22, 500) spectroscopic map of the stars across the Milky Way, and including dust-obscured areas. The APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundances Pipeline (ASPCAP) is the software developed for the automated analysis of these spectra. ASPCAP determines atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances from observed spectra by comparing observed spectra to libraries of theoretical spectra, using chi-2 minimization in a multidimensional parameter space. The package consists of…
I report on the APOKASC catalog, a joint effort between the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium and the SDSS-III APOGEE spectroscopic survey. It will contain both seismic and spectroscopic values for stars observed by both surveys. I discuss the derivation of spectroscopic parameters and their uncertainties from the H-band spectra delivered by the APOGEE spectrograph, illustrating the sensitivity of stellar spectra to some parameters, such as Teff, and lack of sensitivity to others, such as logg.
Machine learning allows efficient extraction of physical properties from stellar spectra that have been obtained by large surveys. The viability of ML approaches has been demonstrated for spectra covering a variety of wavelengths and spectral resolutions, but most often for main sequence or evolved stars, where reliable synthetic spectra provide labels and data for training. Spectral models of young stellar objects (YSOs) and low mass main sequence (MS) stars are less well-matched to their empirical counterparts, however, posing barriers to previous approaches to classify spectra of such stars…
Despite its importance for understanding the nature of early stellar generations and for constraining Galactic bulge formation models, at present little is known about the metal-poor stellar content of the central Milky Way. This is a consequence of the great distances involved and intervening dust obscuration, which challenge optical studies. However, the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), a wide-area, multifiber, high-resolution spectroscopic survey within Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), is exploring the chemistry of all Galactic stellar populations at …
Chemical abundances for 15 elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni) are presented for 83 stellar members of the 4 Gyr old solar-metallicity open cluster M67. The sample contains stars spanning a wide range of evolutionary phases, from G dwarfs to red clump stars. The abundances were derived from near-IR ($λ$1.5 -- 1.7$μ$m) high-resolution spectra ($R$ = 22,500) from the SDSS-IV/APOGEE survey. A 1-D LTE abundance analysis was carried out using the APOGEE synthetic spectral libraries, via chi-square minimization of the synthetic and observed spectra with the qASPCAP c…
The updated H-band spectral line list (from λ15,000 - 17,000Å) adopted by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) for the SDSS IV Data Release 16 (DR16) is presented here. The APOGEE line list is a combination of atomic and molecular lines with data from laboratory, theoretical, and astrophysical sources. Oscillator strengths and damping constants are adjusted using high signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectra of the Sun and alpha Boo (Arcturus) as "standard stars". Updates to the DR16 line list, when compared to the previous DR14 version, are the inclusion of mole…
We study the multiple populations of $ω$ Cen by using the abundances of Fe, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, and Ce from the high-resolution, high signal-to-noise (S/N$>$70) spectra of 982 red giant stars observed by the SDSS-IV/APOGEE-2 survey. We find that the shape of the Al-Mg and N-C anticorrelations changes as a function of metallicity, continuous for the metal-poor groups, but bimodal (or unimodal) at high metallicities. There are four Fe populations, similar to what has been found in previously published investigations, but we find seven populations based on Fe, Al, and Mg abundances. The e…
Spectroscopic surveys require fast and efficient analysis methods to maximize their scientific impact. Here we apply a deep neural network architecture to analyze both SDSS-III APOGEE DR13 and synthetic stellar spectra. When our convolutional neural network model (StarNet) is trained on APOGEE spectra, we show that the stellar parameters (temperature, gravity, and metallicity) are determined with similar precision and accuracy as the APOGEE pipeline. StarNet can also predict stellar parameters when trained on synthetic data, with excellent precision and accuracy for both APOGEE data and synthe…
Although core helium-burning red clump (RC) stars are faint at ultraviolet wavelengths, their ultraviolet-optical color is a unique and accessible probe of their physical properties. Using data from the GALEX All Sky Imaging Survey, Gaia Data Release 2 and the SDSS APOGEE DR14 survey, we find that spectroscopic metallicity is strongly correlated with the location of an RC star in the UV-optical color magnitude diagram. The RC has a wide spread in (NUV - G)$_0$ color, over 4 magnitudes, compared to a 0.7-magnitude range in (G$_{BP}$ - G$_{RP}$)$_0$. We propose a photometric, dust-corrected, ult…

We present a first determination of distances and extinctions for individual stars in the first release of the APOKASC catalogue, built from the joint efforts of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC). Our method takes into account the spectroscopic constraints derived from the APOGEE Stellar Parameters and Chemical Abundances Pipeline, together with the asteroseismic parameters from KASC. These parameters are then employed to estimate intrinsic stellar properties, including absolute magnitudes, using the Bayes…
Over two years 8,859 high-resolution H-band spectra of 3,493 young (1 - 10 Myr) stars were gathered by the multi-object spectrograph of the APOGEE project as part of the IN-SYNC ancillary program of that SDSS-III survey. Here we present the forward modeling approach used to derive effective temperatures, surface gravities, radial velocities, rotational velocities, and H-band veiling from these near-infrared spectra. We discuss in detail the statistical and systematic uncertainties in these stellar parameters. In addition we present accurate extinctions by measuring the E(J-H) of these young st…
