Binaries play key roles in determining stellar parameters and exploring stellar evolution models. We build a catalog of 88 eclipsing binaries with spectroscopic information, taking advantage of observations from both the Large Sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) surveys. A software pipeline is constructed to identify binary candidates by examining their light curves. The orbital periods of binaries are derived from the Lomb-Scargle method. The key distinguishing features of eclipsing binaries are recognized by a new filter \textit{Flat Test}. We classify the eclipsing binaries by applying Fourier analysis on the light curves. Among all the binary stars, 13 binaries are identified as eclipsing binaries for the first time. The catalog contains information: position, primary eclipsing magnitude and time, eclipsing depth, the number of photometry and radial velocity observations, largest radial velocity difference, binary type, the effective temperature of observable star $T_{\rm eff}$, and surface gravity of observable star log \emph{g}. The false-positive probability is calculated by using both a Monte Carlo simulation and real data from the SDSS Stripe 82 Standard Catalog. The binaries in the catalog are mostly with a period of less than one day. The period distribution shows a 0.22-day cut-off which is consistent with the low probability of an eclipsing binary rotating with such a period.
Theoretical models of stars constitute a fundamental bedrock upon which much of astrophysics is built, but large swaths of model parameter space remain uncalibrated by observations. The best calibrators are eclipsing binaries in clusters, allowing measurement of masses, radii, luminosities, and temperatures, for stars of known metallicity and age. We present the discovery and detailed characterization of PTFEB132.707+19.810, a P=6.0 day eclipsing binary in the Praesepe cluster ($τ$~600--800 Myr; [Fe/H]=0.14$\pm$0.04). The system contains two late-type stars (SpT$_P$=M3.5$\pm$0.2; SpT$_S$=M4.3$…
We report the discovery of an eclipsing binary -- PTF1 J072456$+$125301-- composed of a subdwarf B (sdB) star ($g'=17.2^m$) with a faint companion. Subdwarf B stars are core helium-burning stars, which can be found on the extreme horizontal branch. About half of them reside in close binary systems, but few are known to be eclipsing, for which fundamental stellar parameters can be derived.\newline We conducted an analysis of photometric data and spectra from the Palomar 60'' and the 200" Hale telescope respectively. A quantitative spectral analysis found an effective temperature of $T_{\text{ef…
Eclipsing binaries provide a unique opportunity to determine fundamental stellar properties. In the era of wide-field cameras and all-sky imaging surveys, thousands of eclipsing binaries have been reported through light curve classification, yet their basic properties remain unexplored due to the extensive efforts needed to follow them up spectroscopically. In this paper we investigate three M2-M3 type double-lined eclipsing binaries discovered by cross-matching eclipsing binaries from the Catalina Sky Survey wtih spectroscopically classified M dwarfs from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber…
High-precision stellar mass and radius measured directly from binaries can effectively calibrate the stellar models. However, such a database containing full spectral types and large range of metallicity is still not fully established. A continuous effort of data collecting and analysis are requested to complete the database. In this work, we provide a catalog containing 184 binaries with independent atmospheric parameters and accurate masses and radii as the benchmark of stellar mass and radius. The catalog contains 56 new detached binaries from LAMOST Medium-resolution spectroscopic (MRS) su…
The spotted detached eclipsing binary (DEB) offers insights into starspots on the binary. Three spotted DEBs, KIC 8097825, KIC 6859813, and KIC 5527172, which were observed by the Kepler photometry and LAMOST spectroscopy, are studied in this work. The physical parameters of binaries are determined by binary modeling. The sizes, lifetimes, and single/double-dip ratio (SDR) of starspots are derived by starspot analysis. KIC 8097825 has large starspots. KIC 6859813 has a spot rotation period shorter than its orbital period but the system should be synchronized inferred from timescale estimation.…
About 3196 EA-type binaries (EAs) were observed by LAMOST by June 16, 2017 and their spectral types were derived. Meanwhile stellar atmospheric parameters of 2020 EAs were determined. In the paper, those EAs are catalogued and their physical properties and evolutionary states are investigated. The period distribution of EAs suggests that the period limit of tidal locking for the close binaries is about 6 days. It is found that the metallicity of EAs is higher than that of EWs indicating that EAs are generally younger than EWs and they are the progenitors of EWs. The metallicities of long-perio…
We present the data release (DR) 5 catalogue of white dwarf-main sequence (WDMS) binaries from the Large Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). The catalogue contains 876 WDMS binaries, of which 757 are additions to our previous LAMOST DR1 sample and 357 are systems that have not been published before. We also describe a LAMOST-dedicated survey that aims at obtaining spectra of photometrically-selected WDMS binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that are expected to contain cool white dwarfs and/or early type M dwarf companions. This is a population under-represen…
Numerous EWs were discovered by several deep photometric survey and there are about 40785 EW-type binary systems listed in the international variable star index (VSX) by March 13, 2017. 7938 of them were observed by LAMOST by November 30, 2016 and their spectral types were given. Stellar atmospheric parameters of 5363 EW-type binary stars were determined based on good spectroscopic observations. In the paper, those EWs were catalogued and their properties are analyzed. The distributions of the orbital period (P), the effect temperature (T), the gravitational acceleration (Log(g)), the metallic…
Search for and analysis of eclipsing binaries in the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey field. I. RA: $\textbf{23}^h$$\textbf{01}^m$$\textbf{51}^s$, Dec: +34$^\circ$36$^\prime$45$^{\prime \prime}$
We report follow-up observations of five cataclysmic variable candidates from LAMOST published by Hou et al. (2020). LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 is the most unusual of the five; an early-M type secondary star contributes strongly to its spectrum, and its spectral and photometric behavior are strikingly reminiscent of the hitherto-unique propeller system AE Aqr. We confirm that a 7.34-hr period discovered in the Catalina survey data (Drake et al. 2014) is orbital. Another object, LAMOST J204305.95+341340.6 appears to be a near twin of the novalike variable V795 Her, with an orbital period in the…
We present three new eclipsing white-dwarf / M-dwarf binary systems discovered during a search for transiting planets around M-dwarfs. Unlike most known eclipsing systems of this type, the optical and infrared emission is dominated by the M-dwarf components, and the systems have optical colors and discovery light curves consistent with being Jupiter-radius transiting planets around early M-dwarfs. We detail the PTF/M-dwarf transiting planet survey, part of the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). We present a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)-based box-least-squares search for transits that runs appr…
We report the discovery and analysis of PTF1 J085713+331843, a new eclipsing post common-envelope detached white-dwarf red-dwarf binary with a 2.5h orbital period discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory. ULTRACAM multicolour photometry over multiple orbital periods reveals a light curve with a deep flat-bottomed primary eclipse and a strong reflection effect. Phase-resolved spectroscopy shows broad Balmer absorption lines from the DA white dwarf and phase-dependent Balmer emission lines originating on the irradiated side of the red dwarf. The temperature of the DA white dwarf is $T_\mathrm…
The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) Orion project is an experiment within the broader PTF survey, a systematic automated exploration of the sky for optical transients. Taking advantage of the wide field of view available using the PTF camera at the Palomar 48" telescope, 40 nights were dedicated in December 2009-January 2010 to perform continuous high-cadence differential photometry on a single field containing the young (7-10Myr) 25 Ori association. The primary motivation for the project is to search for planets around young stars in this region. The unique data set also provides for much anc…
We report the discovery and analysis of 36 new eclipsing EL CVn-type binaries, consisting of a core helium-composition pre-white dwarf and an early-type main-sequence companion, more than doubling the known population of these systems. We have used supervised machine learning methods to search 0.8 million lightcurves from the Palomar Transient Factory, combined with SDSS, Pan-STARRS and 2MASS colours. The new systems range in orbital periods from 0.46-3.8 d and in apparent brightness from ~14-16 mag in the PTF $R$ or $g^{\prime}$ filters. For twelve of the systems, we obtained radial velocity …
AE Aqr was until recently the only known magnetic cataclysmic variable (MCV) containing a rapidly spinning (33.08 s) white dwarf (WD). Its radio emission is believed to be a superposition of synchrotron emitting plasmoids, because it has a positive spectral index spanning three orders of magnitude (~2-2000 GHz) and is unpolarized. Both characteristics are unusual for MCVs. Recently, Thorstensen has suggested that the cataclysmic variable LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 (henceforth, J0240+19) is a twin of AE Aqr based on its optical spectra. Optical photometry shows the star to be a high-inclination…
Chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binary systems are rare objects that allow the derivation of fundamental stellar parameters and important information on the evolutionary status and the origin of the observed chemical peculiarities. Here we present an investigation of the known eclipsing binary system BD+09 1467 = V680 Mon. Using spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and own observations, we identify the primary component of the system as a mercury-manganese (HgMn/CP3) star (spectral type kB9 hB8 HeB9 V HgMn). Furthermore, photometric time se…

We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to distinguish the double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) from others based on single exposure medium-resolution spectra ($R\sim 7,500$). The training set consists of a large set of mock spectra of single stars and binaries synthesized based on the MIST stellar evolutionary model and ATLAS9 atmospheric model. Our model reaches a novel theoretic false positive rate by adding a proper penalty on the negative sample (e.g., 0.12\% and 0.16\% for the blue/red arm when the penalty parameter $Λ=16$). Tests show that the performance is as exp…
Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), located at Xinglong Station of NAOC, has a field of view upto 18 deg^2. The TMTS has started to monitor the LAMOST sky areas since 2020, with the uninterrupted observations lasting for about 6 hours on average for each sky area and a cadence of about 1 minute. Here we introduce the data analysis and preliminary scientific results for the first-year observations, which covered 188 LAMOST plates ( about 1970 deg^2). These observations have generated over 4.9 million uninterrupted light curves, with at least 100 epochs for each of them.…
Recently, a single-line spectroscopic binary, LTD064402+245919, has been discovered by Yang et al. Using data from LAMOST and ZTF, the unseen companion is estimated to have a mass of 1-3 $M_{\odot}$, orbiting a subgiant with orbital period of 14.50 days, making it a good compact binary candidate without X-ray emission. However, new light curves from ZTF and ASAS-SN, have shown the depth of one dip increases towards a bluer wavelength, indicating LTD064402+245919 is more likely to be a subgiant with a red star. Using both Wilson-Devinney code and Phoebe, the derived $T_{eff}$ of secondary is ab…
Based on luminosity contributions, we develop a spectroscopic modelling method to derive atmospheric parameters of component stars in binary systems. The method is designed for those spectra of binaries which show double-lined features due to the radial velocities differences between the component stars. We first derive the orbital parameters and the stellar radii by solving the light and radial velocity curves. Then the luminosity contributions in different phases can be calculated. The synthesised double-lined spectra model is constructed by superposing theoretical single-star spectra accord…
We report observations of a possible young transiting planet orbiting a previously known weak-lined T-Tauri star in the 7-10 Myr old Orion-OB1a/25-Ori region. The candidate was found as part of the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) Orion project. It has a photometric transit period of 0.448413 +- 0.000040 days, and appears in both 2009 and 2010 PTF data. Follow-up low-precision radial velocity (RV) observations and adaptive optics imaging suggest that the star is not an eclipsing binary, and that it is unlikely that a background source is blended with the target and mimicking the observed transi…
Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars are important to astrophysics because their complex atmospheres lend themselves perfectly to the investigation of the interplay between such diverse phenomena as atomic diffusion, magnetic fields, and stellar rotation. The present work is aimed at identifying new mCP stars using spectra collected by the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Suitable candidates were selected by searching LAMOST DR4 spectra for the presence of the characteristic 5200A flux depression. Spectral classification was carried out with a modified ve…
The LAMOST spectra and $\it{Kepler}$ light curves are combined to investigate the detached eclipsing binary KIC 8098300, which shows the O'Connell effect caused by spot/facula modulation. The radial velocity (RV) measurements are derived by using the tomographic spectra disentangling technology. The mass ratio $q = K_1/K_2 = 0.812 \pm 0.007$, and the orbital semi-major axis $a\mathrm{\sin}i = 14.984 \pm 0.048\ R_\odot$ are obtained by fitting the RV curves. We optimize the binary model concerning the spot/facula activity with the code PHOEBE and obtain precise parameters of the orbit including…
We present a statistical study of the largest bibliographic compilation of stellar and orbital parameters of W UMa stars derived by light curve synthesis with Roche models. The compilation includes nearly 700 individually investigated objects from over 450 distinct publications. Almost 70% of this sample is comprised of stars observed in the last decade that have not been considered in previous statistical studies. We estimate the ages of the cataloged stars, model the distributions of their periods, mass ratios, temperatures and other quantities, and compare them with the data from CRTS, LAMO…

Aims. Large radial velocity variations in the LAMOST spectra of giant stars have been used to infer the presence of unseen companions. Some of them have been proposed as possible black hole candidates. We test this selection by investigating the classification of the one candidate having a known X-ray counterpart (UCAC4 721-037069). Methods. We obtained time-resolved spectra from the Liverpool Telescope and a 5ks observation from the Chandra observatory to fully constrain the orbital parameters and the X-ray emission of this system. Results. We find the source to be an eclipsing stellar binary…
We present a study of eclipsing binary J064726.39+223431.6 using spectra from the LAMOST-MRS and TESS photometry. We use full-spectrum fitting to derive radial velocities and spectral parameters: ${T_{\rm eff}}_{A,B}=6177,\,5820$ K, $v \sin{i}_{A,B}=59,\,50~\kms$ and ${\rm [Fe/H]}_{A,B}=-0.19$ dex. The orbital solution and light curve analysis suggest that it is a close pair of fast rotating stars on circular orbit. We measure their masses to be $M_{A,B}=1.307\pm0.007,\, 1.129\pm0.005\,M_\odot$ and their radii to be $R_{A,B}=1.405\pm0.052,\, 1.219\pm0.060\,R_\odot$ resulting in surface graviti…
Optical Flares Detected on a Contact Binary: The First Photometric and Spectroscopic Analysis of a Long-period Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary HAT 307-0007476
The first photometric, spectroscopic, and period variation studies of neglected short-period eclipsing binary V2840 Cygni are presented. High Mass Ratio Contact Binaries, especially those in the weak-contact configuration are vital while probing into the evolutionary models of CBs using stellar parameters. The photometric solutions reveal the weak-contact nature of V2840 Cygni with a high mass ratio ($\sim1.36$), motivating us to investigate the nature of such binaries. The period variation study of V2840 Cygni spanning for 15 years shows a secular period decrease at a rate of $\sim5.5\times10…
ASAS J174406+2446.8 was originally found as a $δ$ Scuti-type pulsating star with the period P=0.189068 $days$ by ASAS survey. However, the LAMOST stellar parameters reveal that it is far beyond the red edge of pulsational instability strip on the $\log g-T$ diagram of $δ$ Scuti pulsating stars. To understand the physical properties of the variable star, we observed it by the 1.0-m Cassegrain reflecting telescope at Yunnan Observatories. Multi-color light curves in B, V, R$_{c}$ and I$_{c}$ bands were obtained and are analyzed by using the W-D program. It is found that this variable star is a s…
A photometric and spectroscopic investigation is performed on five W Ursae Majoris eclipsing binaries (EWs) J015818.6+260247 (hereinafter as J0158b), J073248.4+405538 (hereinafter as J0732), J101330.8+494846 (hereinafter as J1013), J132439.8+130747 (hereinafter as J1324) and J152450.7+245943 (hereinafter as J1524). The photometric data are collected with the help of the 1.3\,m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT), the 1.04\,m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and the TESS space mission. The low-resolution spectra of the 4\,m Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) are u…
The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) provides long baseline (${\sim}4$ yrs) $V-$band light curves for sources brighter than V$\lesssim17$ mag across the whole sky. We produced V-band light curves for a total of ${\sim}61.5$ million sources and systematically searched these sources for variability. We identified ${\sim} 426,000$ variables, including ${\sim} 219,000$ new discoveries. Most (${\sim}74\%$) of our discoveries are in the Southern hemisphere. Here we use spectroscopic information from LAMOST, GALAH, RAVE, and APOGEE to study the physical and chemical properties of the…
