DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. As the analogue of the chromatic polynomial $P(G,m)$, the DP color function of a graph $G$, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, counts the minimum number of DP-colorings over all possible $m$-fold covers. It is known that, unlike the list color function $P_{\ell}(G,m)$, for any $g \geq 3$ there exists a graph $G$ with girth $g$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) < P(G,m)$ when $m$ is sufficiently large. Thus, two fundamental open questions regarding the DP color function are: (i) for which $G$ does there exist an $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) = P(G,m)$ whenever $m \geq N$, (ii) Given a graph $G$ does there always exist an $N \in \mathbb{N}$ and a polynomial $p(m)$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m) = p(m)$ whenever $m \geq N$?
In this paper we give exact formulas for the DP color function of a Theta graph based on the parity of its path lengths. This gives an explicit answer, including the formulas for the polynomials that are not the chromatic polynomial, to both the questions above for Theta graphs. We extend this result to Generalized Theta graphs by characterizing the exact parity condition that ensures the DP color function eventually equals the chromatic polynomial. To answer the second question for Generalized Theta graphs, we confirm it for the larger class of graphs with a feedback vertex set of size one.
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. The chromatic polynomial of a graph is an extensively studied notion in combinatorics since its introduction by Birkhoff in 1912; denoted $P(G,m)$, it equals the number of proper $m$-colorings of graph $G$. Counting function analogues of the chromatic polynomial have been introduced and studied for list colorings: $P_{\ell}$, the list color function (1990); DP colorings: $P_{DP}$, the DP color function (2019), a…
In 2003 Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West introduced a list analogue of equitable coloring called equitable choosability. A $k$-assignment, $L$, for a graph $G$ assigns a list, $L(v)$, of $k$ available colors to each $v \in V(G)$, and an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring, $f$, of $G$ such that $f(v) \in L(v)$ for each $v \in V(G)$ and each color class of $f$ has size at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k \rceil$. In 2018, Kaul, Mudrock, and Pelsmajer subsequently introduced the List Equitable Total Coloring Conjecture which states that if $T$ is a total graph of some simple graph, then $T$ is…
The two partition functions $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ were introduced by Andrews, Dixit and Yee, which are related to the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, respectively. Recently, Andrews and Yee analytically studied two identities that connect the refinements of $p_ω(n)$ and $p_ν(n)$ with the generalized bivariate mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $ν(z;q)$, respectively. However, they stated these identities cried out for bijective proofs. In this paper, we first define the generalized trivariate mock theta functions $ω(y,z;q)$ and $ν(y,z;q)$. Then by utilizing odd Ferrers graph…
The packing chromatic number $χ$ $ρ$ (G) of an undirected (resp. oriented) graph G is the smallest integer k such that its set of vertices V (G) can be partitioned into k disjoint subsets V 1,..., V k, in such a way that every two distinct vertices in V i are at distance (resp. directed distance) greater than i in G for every i, 1 $\le$ i $\le$ k. The generalized theta graph $Θ$ {\ell} 1,...,{\ell}p consists in two end-vertices joined by p $\ge$ 2 internally vertex-disjoint paths with respective lengths 1 $\le$ {\ell} 1 $\le$ . . . $\le$ {\ell} p. We prove that the packing chromatic number of …
Recently, Wang and Ma propose a conjecture associated with the possible generalization of Andrews-Warnaar identities. It is confirmed in this paper. As the applications of this conjecture, we prove that a family of series can be expressed by the partial theta functions and construct some new partial theta function identities.

George Andrews and Ae Ja Yee recently established beautiful results involving bivariate generalizations of the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, thereby extending their earlier results with the second author. Generalizing the Andrews-Yee identities for trivariate generalizations of these mock theta functions remained a mystery, as pointed out by Li and Yang in their recent work. We partially solve this problem and generalize these identities. Several new as well as well-known results are derived. For example, one of our two main theorems gives, as a corollary, a special case …
The chromatic critical edge theorem of Simonovits states that for a given color critical graph $H$ with $χ(H)=k+1$, there exists an $n_0(H)$ such that the Turán graph $T_{n,k}$ is the only extremal graph with respect to $ex(n,H)$ provided $n \geq n_0(H)$. Nikiforov's pioneer work on spectral graph theory implies that the color critical edge theorem also holds if $ex(n,H)$ is replaced by the maximum spectral radius and $n_0(H)$ is an exponential function of $|H|$. We want to know which color critical graphs $H$ satisfy that $n_0(H)$ is a linear function of $|H|$. Previous graphs include complet…

We consider a graph observability problem: how many edge colors are needed for an unlabeled graph so that an agent, walking from node to node, can uniquely determine its location from just the observed color sequence of the walk? Specifically, let G(n,d) be an edge-colored subgraph of d-dimensional (directed or undirected) lattice of size n^d = n * n * ... * n. We say that G(n,d) is t-observable if an agent can uniquely determine its current position in the graph from the color sequence of any t-dimensional walk, where the dimension is the number of different directions spanned by the edges of…
We derive upper and lower bounds on the degree $d$ for which the Lovász $\vartheta$ function, or equivalently sum-of-squares proofs with degree two, can refute the existence of a $k$-coloring in random regular graphs $G_{n,d}$. We show that this type of refutation fails well above the $k$-colorability transition, and in particular everywhere below the Kesten-Stigum threshold. This is consistent with the conjecture that refuting $k$-colorability, or distinguishing $G_{n,d}$ from the planted coloring model, is hard in this region. Our results also apply to the disassortative case of the stochast…
We introduce a generalization of the celebrated Lovász theta number of a graph to simplicial complexes of arbitrary dimension. Our generalization takes advantage of real simplicial cohomology theory, in particular combinatorial Laplacians, and provides a semidefinite programming upper bound of the independence number of a simplicial complex. We consider properties of the graph theta number such as the relationship to Hoffman's ratio bound and to the chromatic number and study how they extend to higher dimensions. Like in the case of graphs, the higher dimensional theta number can be extended t…
Lovasz theta function and the related theta body of graphs have been in the center of the intersection of four research areas: combinatorial optimization, graph theory, information theory, and semidefinite optimization. In this paper, utilizing a modern convex optimization viewpoint, we provide a set of minimal conditions (axioms) under which certain key, desired properties are generalized, including the main equivalent characterizations of the theta function, the theta body of graphs, and the corresponding antiblocking duality relations. Our framework describes several semidefinite and polyhe…
We find two involutions on partitions that lead to partition identities for Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions $ϕ(-q)$ and $ψ(-q)$. We also give an involution for Fine's partition identity on the mock theta function f(q). The two classical identities of Ramanujan on third order mock theta functions are consequences of these partition identities. Our combinatorial constructions also apply to Andrews' generalizations of Ramanujan's identities.
In this paper we generalize the famous Jacobi's triple product identity, considered as an identity for theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives, to higher genus/dimension. By applying the results and methods developed in our previous paper math.AG/0310085 several generalizations to Siegel modular forms are obtained. These generalizations are identities satisfied by theta functions with characteristics and their derivatives at zero. Equating the coefficients of the Fourier expansion of these relations to zero yields non-trivial combinatorial identities.
It is shown how many of the partial theta function identities in Ramanujan's lost notebook can be generalized to infinite families of such identities. Key in our construction is the Bailey lemma and a new generalization of the Jacobi triple product identity. By computing residues around the poles of our identities we find a surprising connection between partial theta functions identities and Garret-Ismail-Stanton-type extensions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
Given positive integers $p$ and $q$, a $(p,q)$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ is an edge-coloring in which every $p$-clique receives at least $q$ colors. Erdős and Shelah posed the question of determining $f(n,p,q)$, the minimum number of colors needed for a $(p,q)$-coloring of $K_n$. In this paper, we expand on the color energy technique introduced by Pohoata and Sheffer to prove new lower bounds on this function, making explicit the connection between bounds on extremal numbers and $f(n,p,q)$. Using results on the extremal numbers of subdivided complete graphs, theta graphs, and subdiv…
In his lost notebook, Ramanujan listed 5 identities related to the false theta function $$f(q)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty (-1)^nq^{n(n+1)/2}.$$ A new combinatorial interpretation and proof of one of these identities is given. The methods of the proof allow for new multivariate generalizations of this identity. Additionally, the same technique can be used to obtained a combinatorial interpretation of another one of the identities.
Motivated by the Erdős-Faber-Lovász (EFL) conjecture for hypergraphs, we consider the list edge coloring of linear hypergraphs. We discuss several conjectures for list edge coloring linear hypergraphs that generalize both EFL and Vizing's theorem for graphs. For example, we conjecture that in a linear hypergraph of rank 3, the list edge chromatic number is at most 2 times the maximum degree plus 1. We show that for sufficiently large fixed rank and sufficiently large degree, the conjectures are true.
We define a $P$-compelling coloring as a proper coloring of the vertices of a graph such that every subset consisting of one vertex of each color has property $P$. The $P$-compelling chromatic number is the minimum number of colors in such a coloring. We show that this notion generalizes the dominator and total dominator chromatic numbers, and provide some general bounds and algorithmic results. We also investigate the specific cases where $P$ is that the subset contains at least one edge or that the subset is connected.
Grötschel, Lovász, and Schrijver generalized the Lovász $\vartheta$ function by allowing a weight for each vertex. We provide a similar generalization of Duan, Severini, and Winter's $\tilde{\vartheta}$ on non-commutative graphs. While the classical theory involves a weight vector assigning a non-negative weight to each vertex, the non-commutative theory uses a positive semidefinite weight matrix. The classical theory is recovered in the case of diagonal weight matrices. Most of Grötschel, Lovász, and Schrijver's results generalize to non-commutative graphs. In particular, we generalize the in…
In this work, we introduce DPG-coloring using the concepts of DP-coloring and variable degeneracy to modify the proofs on the following papers: (i) DP-3-coloring of planar graphs without $4$, $9$-cycles and cycles of two lengths from $\{6, 7, 8\}$ (R. Liu, S. Loeb, M. Rolek, Y. Yin, G. Yu, Graphs and Combinatorics 35(3) (2019) 695-705), (ii) Every planar graph without $i$-cycles adjacent simultaneously to $j$-cycles and $k$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable when $\{i, j, k\}=\{3, 4, 5\}$ (P. Sittitrai, K. Nakprasit, arXiv:1801.06760(2019) preprint), (iii) Every planar graph is $5$-choosable (C. Thoma…
We define two-parameter generalizations of two combinatorial constructions of Andrews: the kth symmetrized rank moment and the k-marked Durfee symbol. We prove that three specializations of the associated generating functions are so-called quasimock theta functions, while a fourth specialization gives quasimodular forms. We then define a two-parameter generalization of Andrews' smallest parts function and note that this leads to quasimock theta functions as well. The automorphic properties are deduced using q-series identities relating the relevant generating functions to known mock theta func…
Let $G$ be a plane graph with $C$ the boundary of the outer face and let $(L(v):v\in V(G))$ be a family of non-empty sets. By an $L$-coloring of a subgraph $J$ of $G$ we mean a (proper) coloring $ϕ$ of $J$ such that $ϕ(v)\in L(v)$ for every vertex $v$ of $J$. Thomassen proved that if $v_1,v_2\in V(C)$ are adjacent, $L(v_1)\ne L(v_2)$, $|L(v)|\ge3$ for every $v\in V(C)\setminus \{v_1,v_2\}$ and $|L(v)|\ge5$ for every $v\in V(G)\setminus V(C)$, then $G$ has an $L$-coloring. As one final application in this last part of our series on $5$-list-coloring, we derive from all of our theory a far-reach…
We introduce a statistic on overpartitions called the $\overline{k}$-rank. When there are no overlined parts, this coincides with the $k$-rank of a partition introduced by Garvan. Moreover, it reduces to the D-rank of an overpartition when $k=2$. The generating function for the $\overline{k}$-rank of overpartitions is given. We also establish a relation between the generating function of self-3-conjugate overpartitions and the tenth order mock theta functions $X(q)$ and $χ(q)$.
It is known that DP-coloring is a generalization of a list coloring in simple graphs and many results in list coloring can be generalized in those of DP-coloring. In this work, we introduce a relaxed DP-coloring which is a generalization if a relaxed list coloring. We also shows that every planar graph $G$ without $4$-cycles or $6$-cycles is DP-$(k,d)^*$-colorable. It follows immediately that $G$ is $(k,d)^*$-choosable.
A colored complete graph is said to be Gallai-colored if it contains no rainbow triangle. This property has been shown to be equivalent to the existence of a partition of the vertices (of every induced subgraph) in which at most two colors appear on edges between the parts and at most one color appears on edges in between each pair of parts. We extend this notion by defining a coloring of a complete graph to be $k$-Gallai if every induced subgraph has a nontrivial partition of the vertices such that there are at most $k$ colors present in between parts of the partition. The generalized $(k, \e…
Given a multigraph $G$ and function $f : V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 2}$ on its vertices, a degree-$f$ subgraph of $G$ is a spanning subgraph in which every vertex $v$ has degree at most $f(v)$. The degree-$f$ arboricity $a_f(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors required to edge-color $G$ into degree-$f$ forests. At least for constant $f$, Truszczyński conjectured that $a_f(G) \le \max \{Δ_f(G) + 1, a(G)\}$ for every multigraph $G$, where $Δ_f(G) = \max_{v \in V(G)} \lceil d(v)/f(v) \rceil$ and $a(G)$ is the usual arboricity of $G$. This is a strong generalization of the Linear Arbo…
The concept of DP-coloring of a graph is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. Multiple DP-coloring of graphs, as a generalization of multiple list coloring, was first studied by Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Zhu in 2019. This paper proves that planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles are $(7m, 2m)$-DP-colorable for every integer $m$. As a consequence, the strong fractional choice number of any planar graph without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles is at most $7/2$.
The extremal problem of hypergraph colorings related to Erdős--Hajnal property $B$-problem is considered. Let $k$ be a natural number. The problem is to find the value of $m_k(n)$ equal to the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph not admitting $2$-colorings of the vertex set such that every edge of the hypergraph contains at least $k$ vertices of each color. In this paper we obtain new lower bounds for $m_k(n).$

We develop the theory of copartitions, which are a generalization of partitions with connections to many classical topics in partition theory, including Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, theta functions, mock theta functions, partitions with parts separated by parity, and crank statistics. Using both analytic and combinatorial methods, we give two forms of the three-parameter generating function, and we study several special cases that demonstrate the potential broader impact the study of copartitions may have.
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $d$, an orthogonal vector $d$-coloring of $G$ is an assignment $f$ of vectors of $\mathbb{R}^d$ to $V(G)$ in such a way that adjacent vertices receive orthogonal vectors. The orthogonal chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $χ_v(G)$, is the minimum $d$ for which $G$ admits an orthogonal vector $d$-coloring. This notion has close ties with the notions of Lovász Theta Function, quantum chromatic number, and many other problems, and even though this and related metrics have been extensively studied over the years, we have found that there is a gap in the kno…
We show that Hoffman's sum of eigenvalues bound for the chromatic number is at least as good as the Lovász theta number, but no better than the ceiling of the fractional chromatic number. In order to do so, we display an interesting connection between this sum of eigenvalues bound and a generalization of the Lovász theta number introduced by Manber and Narasimhan in 1988.
Brown has shown that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex of a graph has a linear system of parameters which is defined in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph. Later on Brown and Sagan conjectured a special set of monomials - a so-called NBC basis - described in terms of the circuits and cocircuits of the graph to be a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient of the Stanley-Reisner ring and proved this to be true for theta and phi graphs. We generalize the aforementioned linear system of parameters to broken circuit complexes of regular matroids and transfe…

We consider geometric hypergraphs whose vertex set is a finite set of points (e.g., in the plane), and whose hyperedges are the intersections of this set with a family of geometric regions (e.g., axis-parallel rectangles). A typical coloring problem for such geometric hypergraphs asks, given an integer $k$, for the existence of an integer $m=m(k)$, such that every set of points can be $k$-colored such that every hyperedge of size at least $m$ contains points of different (or all $k$) colors. We generalize this notion by introducing coloring of \emph{$t$-subsets} of points such that every hyper…
We introduce two generalizations of Kochen-Specker (KS) sets: projective KS sets and generalized KS sets. We then use projective KS sets to characterize all graphs for which the chromatic number is strictly larger than the quantum chromatic number. Here, the quantum chromatic number is defined via a nonlocal game based on graph coloring. We further show that from any graph with separation between these two quantities, one can construct a classical channel for which entanglement assistance increases the one-shot zero-error capacity. As an example, we exhibit a new family of classical channels w…
Tensor models are used nowadays for implementing a fundamental theory of quantum gravity. We define here a polynomial $\mathcal T$ encoding the supplementary topological information. This polynomial is a natural generalization of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial (used to characterize matrix graphs) and is different of the Gur\uau polynomial, (R. Gur\uau, "Topological Graph Polynomials in Colored Group Field Theory", Annales Henri Poincare {\bf 11}, 565-584 (2010)) defined for a particular class of tensor graphs, the colorable ones. The polynomial $\mathcal T$ is defined for both colorable and n…
In a recent paper, Dousse introduced a refinement of Siladić's theorem on partitions, where parts occur in two primary and three secondary colors. Her proof used the method of weighted words and $q$-difference equations. The purpose of this paper is to give a bijective proof of a generalization of Dousse's theorem from two primary colors to an arbitrary number of primary colors.
In 2006, Suzuki, and Akbari & Alipour independently presented a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have a heterochromatic spanning tree, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we propose $f$-chromatic graphs as a generalization of heterochromatic graphs. An edge-colored graph is $f$-chromatic if each color $c$ appears on at most $f(c)$ edges. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have an $f$-chromatic spanning forest with exactly $m$ components. Moreover, usin…
Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all color…
This paper is a collection of thoughts and observations, being partly a review and partly a report of current research, on recent work in various aspects of Grünbaum colorings, their existence and usage. In particular, one of the most striking significances of Grünbaum's Conjecture in the 2-dimensional case is its equivalence to the 4-Color Theorem. The notion of Grünbaum coloring is extended from the 2-dimensional case to the case of arbitrary finite hyper-dimensions.
We prove that in sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs of average degree $d$, the vector chromatic number (the relaxation of chromatic number coming from the Lovàsz theta function) is typically $\tfrac{1}{2}\sqrt{d} + o_d(1)$. This fits with a long-standing conjecture that various refutation and hypothesis-testing problems concerning $k$-colorings of sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs become computationally intractable below the `Kesten-Stigum threshold' $d_{KS,k} = (k-1)^2$. Along the way, we use the celebrated Ihara-Bass identity and a carefully constructed non-backtracking random walk to prove two deterministic…
