The chromatic critical edge theorem of Simonovits states that for a given color critical graph $H$ with $χ(H)=k+1$, there exists an $n_0(H)$ such that the Turán graph $T_{n,k}$ is the only extremal graph with respect to $ex(n,H)$ provided $n \geq n_0(H)$. Nikiforov's pioneer work on spectral graph theory implies that the color critical edge theorem also holds if $ex(n,H)$ is replaced by the maximum spectral radius and $n_0(H)$ is an exponential function of $|H|$. We want to know which color critical graphs $H$ satisfy that $n_0(H)$ is a linear function of $|H|$. Previous graphs include complete graphs and odd cycles. In this paper, we find two new classes of graphs: books and theta graphs. Namely, we prove that every graph on $n$ vertices with $ρ(G)>ρ(T_{n,2})$ contains a book of size greater than $\frac{n}{6.5}$. This can be seen as a spectral version of a 1962 conjecture by Erdős, which states that every graph on $n$ vertices with $e(G)>e(T_{n,2})$ contains a book of size greater than $\frac{n}{6}$. In addition, our result on theta graphs implies that if $G$ is a graph of order $n$ with $ρ(G)>ρ(T_{n,2})$, then $G$ contains a cycle of length $t$ for every $t\leq \frac{n}{7}$. This is related to an open question by Nikiforov which asks to determine the maximum $c$ such that every graph $G$ of large enough order $n$ with $ρ(G)>ρ(T_{n,2})$ contains a cycle of length $t$ for every $t\leq cn$.
Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture states that every $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$-minor. Holroyd [Bull. London Math. Soc. 29, (1997), pp. 139--144] conjectured the following strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture: If $G$ is a $t$-chromatic graph and $S \subseteq V(G)$ takes all colors in every $t$-coloring of $G$, then $G$ contains a $K_t$-minor rooted at $S$. We prove this conjecture in the first open case of $t=4$. Notably, our result also directly implies a stronger version of Hadwiger's conjecture for $5$-chromatic graphs as follows: Every $5$-chromatic graph contains a $K_5$-mi…
In 2015, Matthias Beck and his team developed a computer program in SAGE which efficiently determines the number of signed proper $k$-colorings for a given signed graph. In this article, we determine the number of different signatures on Book graph up to switching isomorphisms. We also find a recursive formula of the signed chromatic polynomials of signed Book graphs.
For $m \geq 3$ and $n \geq 1$, the $m$-cycle book graph $B(m,n)$ consists of $n$ copies of the cycle $C_m$ with one common edge. In this paper, we prove that (a) the number of switching non-isomorphic signed $B(m,n)$ is $n+1$, and (b) the chromatic number of a signed $B(m,n)$ is either 2 or 3. We also obtain explicit formulas for the chromatic polynomials and the zero-free chromatic polynomials of switching non-isomorphic signed book graphs.
Resolving a conjecture of Bollobás and Erdős, Gyárfás proved that every graph $G$ of chromatic number $k+1\geq 3$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ distinct odd lengths. We strengthen this prominent result by showing that such $G$ contains cycles of $\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\rfloor$ consecutive odd lengths. Along the way, combining extremal and structural tools, we prove a stronger statement that every graph of chromatic number $k+1\geq 7$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths, except that some block is $K_{k+1}$. As corollaries, this confirms a conjecture of Verstraëte and answers…
Various results ensure the existence of large complete bipartite graphs in properly colored graphs when some condition related to a topological lower bound on the chromatic number is satisfied. We generalize three theorems of this kind, respectively due to Simonyi and Tardos (Combinatorica, 2006), Simonyi, Tardif, and Zsbán (The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2013), and Chen (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2011). As a consequence of the generalization of Chen's theorem, we get new families of graphs whose chromatic number equals their circular chromatic number and that satisf…
The total chromatic number conjecture which has appeared in a few hundred articles and in numerous books thus far is now one of the classic mathematical unsolved problems. It appears that many authors coincidentally have attributed it to Professor M. Behzad and/or to Professor V. G. Vizing. Eventually after four decades, Professor A. Soifer investigated the origin of this conjecture; published his findings in The Mathematical Coloring Book - 2009; and stated that, "In my opinion this unquestionably merits the joint credit to Vizing and Behzad." After checking all the arguments presented and th…
Every properly colored graph with $χ(G)=k$ colors has edge-disjoint Kempe "backbones", Kempe chains anchored by color-critical vertices for each pair of colors. Certain color permutations arrange these backbones into a clique-like structure, a strengthening of strong immersions of complete graphs. This strengthened immersion is suggested as a template for identifying the disjoint subgraphs comprising Hadwiger's conjectured $K_k$ minor present in $k$-chromatic graphs.
It is well known that a random subgraph of the complete graph $K_n$ has chromatic number $Θ(n/\log n)$ w.h.p. Boris Bukh asked whether the same holds for a random subgraph of any $n$-chromatic graph, at least in expectation. In this paper it is shown that for every graph, whose fractional chromatic number is at least $n$, the fractional chromatic number of its random subgraph is at least $n/(8\log_2(4n))$ with probability more than $1-\frac{1}{2n}$. This gives the affirmative answer for a strengthening of Bukh's question for the fractional chromatic number.
Let H be a tree. It was proved by Rodl that graphs that do not contain H as an induced subgraph, and do not contain the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph, have bounded chromatic number. Kierstead and Penrice strengthened this, showing that such graphs have bounded degeneracy. Here we give a further strengthening, proving that for every tree H, the degeneracy is at most polynomial in t. This answers a question of Bonamy, Pilipczuk, Rzazewski, Thomasse and Walczak.
In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $χ(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.
It is proved that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $χ(G) \geq 4$ has at most $k(k-1)^{n-3}(k-2)(k-3)$ $k$-colourings for every $k \geq 4$. Equality holds for some (and then for every) $k$ if and only if the graph is formed from $K_4$ by repeatedly adding leaves. This confirms (a strengthening of) the $4$-chromatic case of a long-standing conjecture of Tomescu [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets etiquetes, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124-1126]. Proof methods may be of independent interest. In particular, one of our auxiliary results about …
Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This is a strengthening of the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture. Geelen et al. proved that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Using the methods the present authors and Postle recently developed for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor, we make the first improvement on this bound by showing that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$.
A well-studied concept is that of the total chromatic number. A proper total colouring of a graph is a colouring of both vertices and edges so that every pair of adjacent vertices receive different colours, every pair of adjacent edges receive different colours and every vertex and incident edge receive different colours. This paper considers a strengthening of this condition and examines the minimum number of colours required for a total colouring with the additional property that for any adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$, the sets of colours incident to $u$ is different from the set of colours i…
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of a…
The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture says that for every forest $H$ and every integer $k$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain a clique on $k$ vertices then it has bounded chromatic number. (A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced copy of $H$.) Kierstead and Penrice proved it for trees of radius at most two, but otherwise the conjecture is known only for a few simple types of forest. More is known if we exclude a complete bipartite subgraph instead of a clique: Rödl showed that, for every forest $H$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph then it has bounded…
Let $n,k,r$ be positive integers with $n \geq rk$ and $r \geq 2$. Consider a circle $C$ with~$n$ points~$1,\ldots,n$ in clockwise order. The $r$-stable \emph{interlacing graph} $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is the graph with vertices corresponding to $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{1,...,n\}$ such that any two distinct points in~$S$ have distance at least~$r$ around the circle, and edges between~$k$-subsets $P$ and $Q$ if they \emph{interlace}: after removing the points in~$P$ from $C$, the points in~$Q$ are in different connected components. In this paper we prove that the circular chromatic number of $\text…
We prove that the chromatic polynomial $P_\mathbb{G}(q)$ of a finite graph $\mathbb{G}$ of maximal degree $\D$ is free of zeros for $\card q\ge C^*(\D)$ with $$ C^*(\D) = \min_{0<x<2^{1\over \D}-1} {(1+x)^{\D-1}\over x [2-(1+x)^\D]} $$ This improves results by Sokal (2001) and Borgs (2005). Furthermore, we present a strengthening of this condition for graphs with no triangle-free vertices.
A celebrated result of Mantel shows that every graph on $n$ vertices with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor + 1$ edges must contain a triangle. A robust version of this result, due to Rademacher, says that there must in fact be at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in any such graph. Another strengthening, due to the combined efforts of many authors starting with Erdős, says that any such graph must have an edge which is contained in at least $n/6$ triangles. Following Mubayi, we study the interplay between these two results, that is, between the number of triangles in such graphs and their book numbe…
We study the list chromatic number of Cartesian products of graphs through the Alon-Tarsi number as defined by Jensen and Toft (1995) in their seminal book on graph coloring problems. The Alon-Tarsi number of $G$, $AT(G)$, is the smallest $k$ for which there is an orientation, $D$, of $G$ with max indegree $k\!-\!1$ such that the number of even and odd circulations contained in $D$ are different. It is known that $χ(G) \leq χ_\ell(G) \leq χ_p(G) \leq AT(G)$, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number, $χ_\ell(G)$ is the list chromatic number, and $χ_p(G)$ is the paint number of $G$. In this paper we…
We study the degenerate, the star and the degenerate star chromatic numbers and their relation to the genus of graphs. As a tool we prove the following strengthening of a result of Fertin et al.: If $G$ is a graph of maximum degree $Δ$, then $G$ admits a degenerate star coloring using $O(Δ^{3/2})$ colors. We use this result to prove that every graph of genus $g$ admits a degenerate star coloring with $O(g^{3/5})$ colors. It is also shown that these results are sharp up to a logarithmic factor.
A facial unique-maximum coloring of a plane graph is a proper vertex coloring by natural numbers where on each face $α$ the maximal color appears exactly once on the vertices of $α$. Fabrici and Göring proved that six colors are enough for any plane graph and conjectured that four colors suffice. This conjecture is a strengthening of the Four Color theorem. Wendland later decreased the upper bound from six to five. In this note, we disprove the conjecture by giving an infinite family of counterexamples. Thus we conclude that facial unique-maximum chromatic number of the sphere is five.
Hadwiger's conjecture states that every $K_t$-minor free graph is $(t-1)$-colorable. A qualitative strengthening of this conjecture raised by Gerards and Seymour, known as the Odd Hadwiger's conjecture, states similarly that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. For both conjectures, their asymptotic relaxations remain open, i.e., whether an upper bound on the chromatic number of the form $Ct$ for some constant $C>0$ exists. We show that if every graph without a $K_t$-minor is $f(t)$-colorable, then every graph without an odd $K_t$-minor is $2f(t)$-colorable. Using this, th…
We look at colourings of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, focusing our attention on unique colourability and gaps in the chromatic spectrum. The pattern of an edge $E$ in an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ whose vertices are coloured is the partition of $r$ induced by the colour classes of the vertices in $E$. Let $Q$ be a set of partitions of $r$. A $Q$-colouring of $H$ is a colouring of its vertices such that only patterns appearing in $Q$ are allowed. We first show that many known hypergraph colouring problems, including Ramsey theory, can be stated in the language of $Q$-colourings. Then, using as our …
Reed's well-known $ω$, $Δ$, $χ$ conjecture proposes that every graph satisfies $χ\leq \lceil \frac 12(Δ+1+ω)\rceil$. The second author formulated a {\em local strengthening} of this conjecture that considers a bound supplied by the neighbourhood of a single vertex. Following the idea that the chromatic number cannot be greatly affected by any particular stable set of vertices, we propose a further strengthening that considers a bound supplied by the neighbourhoods of two adjacent vertices. We provide some fundamental evidence in support, namely that the stronger bound holds in the fractional r…
Motivated by a recent conjecture of the first author, we prove that every properly coloured triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains a rainbow independent set of size $\lceil\frac12χ\rceil$. This is sharp up to a factor $2$. This result and its short proof have implications for the related notion of chromatic discrepancy. Drawing inspiration from both structural and extremal graph theory, we conjecture that every triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains an induced cycle of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$ as $χ\to\infty$. Even if one only demands an induced path of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$…
Felsner, Hurtado, Noy and Streinu (2000) conjectured that arrangement graphs of simple great-circle arrangements have chromatic number at most $3$. Motivated by this conjecture, we study the colorability of arrangement graphs for different classes of arrangements of (pseudo-)circles. In this paper the conjecture is verified for $\triangle$-saturated pseudocircle arrangements, i.e., for arrangements where one color class of the 2-coloring of faces consists of triangles only, as well as for further classes of (pseudo-)circle arrangements. These results are complemented by a construction which ma…

We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph of odd-girth $2k+1$ to bound the class of $K_4$-minor-free graphs of odd-girth (at least) $2k+1$, that is, to admit a homomorphism from any such $K_4$-minor-free graph. This yields a polynomial-time algorithm to recognize such bounds. Using this condition, we first prove that every $K_4$-minor free graph of odd-girth $2k+1$ admits a homomorphism to the projective hypercube of dimension $2k$. This supports a conjecture of the third author which generalizes the four-color theorem and relates to several outstanding conjectures such as Se…
The Ramsey number $R(F,H)$ is the minimum number $N$ such that any $N$-vertex graph either contains a copy of $F$ or its complement contains $H$. Burr in 1981 proved a pleasingly general result that for any graph $H$, provided $n$ is sufficiently large, a natural lower bound construction gives the correct Ramsey number involving cycles: $R(C_n,H)=(n-1)(χ(H)-1)+σ(H)$, where $σ(H)$ is the minimum possible size of a colour class in a $χ(H)$-colouring of $H$. Allen, Brightwell and Skokan conjectured that the same should be true already when $n\geq |H|χ(H)$. We improve this 40-year-old result of Bu…
The Hadwiger number of a graph $G$, denoted $h(G)$, is the largest integer $t$ such that $G$ contains $K_t$ as a minor. A famous conjecture due to Hadwiger in 1943 states that for every graph $G$, $h(G) \ge χ(G)$, where $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of $G$. Let $α(G)$ denote the independence number of $G$. A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain the graph $H$ as an induced subgraph. In 2003, Plummer, Stiebitz and Toft proved that $h(G) \ge χ(G)$ for all $H$-free graphs $G$ with $α(G) \le 2$, where $H$ is any graph on four vertices with $α(H) \le 2$, $H=C_5$, or $H$ is a particular gra…
