We analyze a nonlinear degenerate parabolic problem whose diffusion coefficient is the Heaviside function of the distance of the solution itself from a given target function. We show that this model behaves as an evolutive variational inequality having the target as an obstacle: under suitable hypotheses, starting from an initial state above the target the solution evolves in time towards an asymptotic solution, eventually getting in contact with part of the target itself. We also study a finite difference approach to the solution of this problem, using the exact Heaviside function or a regular approximation of it, showing the results of some numerical tests.
This paper tackles the approximation of surface diffusion flow using a Cahn--Hilliard-type model. We introduce and analyze a new second order variational phase field model which associates the classical Cahn--Hilliard energy with two degenerate mobilities. This association allows to gain an order of approximation of the sharp limit. In a second part, we propose some simple and efficient numerical schemes to approximate the solutions, and we provide numerical 2D and 3D experiments that illustrate the interest of our model in comparison with other Cahn--Hilliard models.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem $$u_t=u_{xx} +f(t,u), \,\,\, x\in\mathbb{R},\,t>0, $$ $$u(0,x)= u_0(x), \,\,\, x\in\mathbb{R},$$ where $f$ is a rather general nonlinearity that is periodic in $t$, and satisfies $f(\cdot,0)\equiv 0$ and that the corresponding ODE has a positive periodic solution $p(t)$. Assuming that $u_0$ is front-like, that is, $u_0(x)$ is close to $p(0)$ for $x\approx -\infty$ and close to $0$ for $x\approx \infty$, we aim to determine the long-time dynamical behavior of the solution $u(t,x)$ by using the notion of propagation terrace introduced by Ducrot, Gi…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of solutions of time periodic reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*}\label{aaa} \begin{cases} u_{t}(x,t)=u_{xx}(x,t)+f(t,u(x,t)),\quad \,\,\forall x\in\mathbb{R},\,t>0,\\ u(x,0)=u_{0}(x), \quad \quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad \forall x\in\mathbb{R}, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $u_{0}(x)$ is the Heaviside type initial function and $f(t,u)$ satisfies $f(T+t,u)=f(t,u)$. Under certain conditions, we prove that there exists a minimal propagating terrace (a family of pulsating traveling fronts) in some specific sense and the …
In this paper, we consider an unipolar degenerated drift-diffusion system where the relation between the concentration of the charged species $c$ and the chemical potential $h$ is $h(c)=\log \frac{c}{1-c}$. We design four different finite volume schemes based on four different formulations of the fluxes. We provide a stability analysis and existence results for the four schemes. The convergence proof with respect to the discretization parameters is established for two of them. Numerical experiments illustrate the behaviour of the different schemes.

In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
In this work we study global well-posedness and large time behaviour for a typical reaction--diffusion system, which include degenerate diffusion, and whose non-linearities arise from chemical reactions. We show that there is an {\it indirect diffusion effect}, i.e. an effective diffusion for the non-diffusive species which is incurred by a combination of diffusion from diffusive species and reversible reactions between the species. Deriving new estimates for such degenerate reaction-diffusion system, we show, by applying the entropy method, that the solution converges exponentially to equilib…
Bounded weak solutions to a particular class of degenerate parabolic cross-diffusion systems are shown to coincide with the unique strong solution determined by the same initial condition on the maximal existence interval of the latter. The proof relies on an estimate established for a relative entropy associated to the system.
We consider the non-monotone degenerate diffusion equation with time delay. Different from the linear diffusion equation, the degenerate equation allows for semi-compactly supported traveling waves. In particular, we discover sharp-oscillating waves with sharp edges and non-decaying oscillations. The degenerate diffusion and the effect of time delay cause us essential difficulties. We show the existence for both sharp and smooth traveling wave solutions. Furthermore, we prove the oscillating properties of the waves for large wave speeds and large time delay. Since the existing approaches are n…
Two-scale homogenization limits of parabolic cross-diffusion systems in a heterogeneous medium with no-flux boundary conditions are proved. The heterogeneity of the medium is reflected in the diffusion coefficients or by the perforated domain. The diffusion matrix is of degenerate type and may be neither symmetric nor positive semi-definite, but the diffusion system is assumed to satisfy an entropy structure. Uniform estimates are derived from the entropy production inequality. New estimates on the equicontinuity with respect to the time variable ensure the strong convergence of a sequence of …
We find an explicit form of weak solutions to a Riemann problem for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with piecewise constant diffusion coefficient. It is demonstrated that the phase transition lines (free boundaries) correspond to the minimum point of some strictly convex function of a finite number of variables. In the limit as number of phases tend to infinity we obtain a variational formulation of self-similar solution with an arbitrary nonnegative diffusion function.
We consider a class of cross diffusion systems with degenerate (or porous media type) diffusion which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology with zero self diffusions. Known techniques for scalar equations are no longer available here as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. However, we will provide the existence of weak solutions to the degenerate systems under mild integrability conditions of strong solutions to nondegenerate systems and show that they converge to a weak solution of the degerate system. These conditions will be verified for the m…
We are concerned with a class of degenerate diffusion equations with time delay describing population dynamics with age structure. In our recent study [{\em Nonlinearity}, 33 (2020), 4013--4029], we established the existence and uniqueness of critical traveling wave for the time-delayed degenerate diffusion equations, and obtained the reducing mechanism of time delay on critical wave speed. In this paper, we now are able to show the asymptotic spreading speed and its coincidence with the critical wave speed $c^*(m,r)$ of sharp wave, and prove that the initial perturbation or the boundary of th…
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
We consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations coming out of reversible chemistry. When the reaction happens on the totality of the domain, it is known that exponential convergence to equilibrium holds. We show in this paper that this exponential convergence also holds when the reaction holds only on a given open set of a ball, thanks to an observation estimate deduced by logarithmic convexity.
This paper is concerned with traveling wave solutions for a chemotaxis model with degenerate diffusion of porous medium type. We establish the existence of semi-finite traveling waves, including the sharp type and $C^1$ type semi-finite waves. Our results indicate that chemotaxis slows down the wave speed of semi-finite traveling wave, that is, the traveling wave speed for chemotaxis with porous medium (degenerate) diffusion is smaller than that for the porous medium equation without chemotaxis. As we know, this is a new result not shown in the existing literature. The result appears to be a l…
We study the well-posedness of a modified degenerate Cahn-Hilliard type model for surface diffusion. With degenerate phase-dependent diffusion mobility and additional stabilizing function, this model is able to give the correct sharp interface limit. We introduce a notion of weak solutions for the nonlinear model. The existence result is obtained by approximations of the proposed model with nondegenerate mobilities. We also employ this method to prove existence of weak solutions to a related model where the chemical potential contains a nonlocal term originated from self-climb of dislocations …
In this paper, we study local uniform continuity of nonnegative weak solutions to degenerate diffusion-drift equations in the form \[ u_{t} = Δu^{m} + \nabla\cdot \left( B (x,t) \, u\right), \quad \text{for } m \geq 1 \] assuming a vector field $B \in L^{p}_t L^{q}_{x}$. Regarding local Hölder continuity, we provide a sharp condition on $p$ and $q$, which is referred to as the subcritical region. In the critical region, the divergence-free condition is essential to providing uniform continuity which depends on the modulus continuity of $B$.
We prove an existence and uniqueness result for solutions to nonlinear diffusion equations with degenerate mobility posed on a bounded interval for a certain density $u$. In case of \emph{fast-decay} mobilities, namely mobilities functions under a Osgood integrability condition, a suitable coordinate transformation is introduced and a new nonlinear diffusion equation with linear mobility is obtained. We observe that the coordinate transformation induces a mass-preserving scaling on the density and the nonlinearity, described by the original nonlinear mobility, is included in the diffusive proc…
