Several amorphous silicon structures were generated using a classical molecular dynamics (MD) protocol of melting and quenching with different quenching rates. An analysis of the calculated electronic properties of these structures revealed that the midgap state density of a-Si which is of interest for solar cell and thin film transistor applications can be correlated to bond angle standard deviation. We also found that this parameter can strongly determine the excess energy of a-Si, which is an important criteria in theoretically generating realistic atomic structures of a-Si.
We propose a method to predict the value of the external strain where a generic amorphous solid will fail by a plastic response (i.e. an irreversible deformation), solely on the basis of measurements of the nonlinear elastic moduli. While usually considered fundamentally different, with the elastic properties describing reversible phenomena and plastic failure epitomizing irreversible behavior, we show that the knowledge of some nonlinear elastic moduli is enough to predict where plasticity sets in.
We demonstrate that irreversible structural reorganization is not necessary for the observation of yield behaviour in an amorphous solid. While the majority of solids strained to their yield point do indeed undergo an irreversible reorganization, we find a significant fraction of solids exhibit yield via a reversible strain. We also demonstrate that large instantaneous strains in excess of the yield stress can result in complete stress relaxation, a result of the large non-affine motions driven by the applied strain. The empirical similarity of the dependence of the ratio of stress over strain…
Surface stress and surface energy are fundamental quantities which characterize the interface between two materials. Although these quantities are identical for interfaces involving only fluids, the Shuttleworth effect demonstrates that this is not the case for most interfaces involving solids, since their surface energies change with strain. Crystalline materials are known to have strain dependent surface energies, but in amorphous materials, such as polymeric glasses and elastomers, the strain dependence is debated due to a dearth of direct measurements. Here, we utilize contact angle measur…
We propose that the driving force of an ultrafast crystalline-to-amorphous transition in phase-change memory alloys are strained bonds existing in the (metastable) crystalline phase. For the prototypical example of GST, we demonstrate that upon breaking of long Ge-Te bond by photoexcitation Ge ion shot from an octahedral crystalline to a tetrahedral amorphous position by the uncompensated force of strained short bonds. Subsequent lattice relaxation stabilizes the tetrahedral surroundings of the Ge atoms and ensures the long-term stability of the optically induced phase.
We address the system-size dependence of typical plastic flow events when an amorphous solid is put under a fixed external strain rate at a finite temperature. For system sizes that are accessible to numerical simulations at reasonable strain rates and at low temperatures the magnitude of plastic events grows with the system size. We explain however that this must be a finite size effect; for larger systems there exist two cross-over length-scales $ξ_1$ and $ξ_2$, the first determined by the elastic time-scale and the second by the thermal energy-scale. For system of linear size $L$ larger tha…
The passivation by diffusing H2 of silicon dangling bond defects (E' centers, induced by laser irradiation in amorphous SiO_2 (silica), is investigated in situ at several temperatures. It is found that the reaction between E' center and H_2 requires an activation energy of 0.38eV, and that its kinetics is not diffusion-limited. The results are compared with previous findings on the other fundamental paramagnetic point defect in silica, the non bridging oxygen hole center, which features completely different reaction properties with H_2. Besides, a comparison is proposed with literature data on…
We use empirical molecular dynamics technique to study the low-energy vibrations in a large 4096 atom model for pure amorphous silicon and a set of models with voids of different size based on it. Numerical vibrational eigenvalues and eigenvectors for our models are obtained by exact diagonalization of their dynamical matrices. Our calculations show that localized low-energy vibrational excitations of rather complex structure are present in amorphous silicon models with voids. According to their spatial localization patterns we make an attempt to classify these excitations as modes associated …
Recent theoretical studies of amorphous silicon [Y. Pan et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 206403 (2008)] have revealed subtle but significant structural correlations in network topology: the tendency for short (long) bonds to be spatially correlated with other short (long) bonds). These structures were linked to the electronic band tails in the optical gap. In this paper, we further examine these issues for amorphous silicon, and demonstrate that analogous correlations exist in amorphous SiO2, and in the organic molecule, b-carotene. We conclude with a discussion of the origin of the effects and its…
An implementation of the Reverse Monte Carlo algorithm is presented for the study of amorphous tetrahedral semiconductors. By taking into account a number of constraints that describe the tetrahedral bonding geometry along with the radial distribution function, we construct a model of amorphous silicon using the reverse monte carlo technique. Starting from a completely random configuration, we generate a model of amorphous silicon containing 500 atoms closely reproducing the experimental static structure factor and bond angle distribution and in improved agreement with electronic properties. C…
In this paper, we study several structural models of amorphous silicon, and discuss structural and electronic features common to all. We note spatial correlations between short bonds, and similar correlations between long bonds. Such effects persist under a first principles relaxation of the system and at finite temperature. Next we explore the nature of the band tail states and find the states to possess a filamentary structure. We detail correlations between local geometry and the band tails.
Exponential band edges have been observed in a variety of materials, both crystalline and amorphous. In this paper, we infer the structural origins of these tails in amorphous and defective crystalline Si by direct calculation with current {\it ab initio} methods. We find that exponential tails appear in relaxed models of diamond with suitable point defects. In amorphous silicon (a-Si), we find that structural filaments of short bonds and long bonds exist in the network, and that the tail states near the extreme edges of both band tails are are also filamentary, with much localization on the s…
Recently, the prospects for amorphous phases of graphene (a-G) have been explored computationally. Initial models were flat, and contained odd-member rings, while maintaining three-fold coordination and sp2 bonding. Upon relaxation, puckering occurs, and may be traced to the existence of pentagons, in analogy with the situation for fullerenes. In this work, we systematically explore the inherent structures with energy close to the flat starting structure. As expected, the planar symmetry can be broken in various ways, which we characterize for 800-atom model of a-G, always using local basis de…
We present a novel approach for parameter-free modeling of the structural, dynamical and electronic properties of non-crystalline materials based on ab-initio Molecular Dynamics, improved signal processing technique and computer visualization. The method have been extensively tested by investigating hydrogen and silicon dynamics in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). By comparing the theoretical and experimental vibrational spectra we demonstrate how to relate vibrational properties to the structural stability, bonding and hydrogen diffusion. We extracted microscopic characteristics that …
Using a combination of quantum and classical computational approaches, we model the electronic structure in amorphous silicon in order gain understanding of the microscopic atomic configurations responsible for light induced degradation of solar cells. We demonstrate that regions of strained silicon bonds could be as important as dangling bonds for creating traps for charge carriers. Further, our results show that defects are preferentially formed when a region in the amorphous silicon contains a hole and a light-induced excitation. These results agree with the puzzling dependencies on tempera…
Due to the noticeable structural similarity and being neighborhood in periodic table of group-IV and -V elemental monolayers, whether the combination of group-IV and -V elements could have stable nanosheet structures with optimistic properties has attracted great research interest. In this work, we performed first-principles simulations to investigate the elastic, vibrational and electronic properties of the carbon nitride (CN) nanosheet in the puckered honeycomb structure with covalent interlayer bonding. It has been demonstrated that the structural stability of CN nanosheet is essentially ma…
Ion assisted deposition (IAD) has been investigated for the growth of GaN, and the resulting films studied by x-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy and by transmission electron microscopy. IAD grown stoichiometric GaN consists of random-stacked quasicrystals of some 3 nm diameter. Amorphous material is formed only by incorporation of 15% or more oxygen, which we attribute to the presence of non-tetrahedral bonds centered on oxygen. The ionic favourability of heteropolar bonds and its strikingly simple constraint to even-membered rings is the likely cause of the instability of stoichiom…
A structural model of hydrogenated amorphous silicon containing an isolated dangling bond is used to investigate the effects of electron interactions on the electronic level splittings, localization of charge and spin, and fluctuations in charge and spin. These properties are calculated with a recently developed density-matrix correlation-energy functional applied to a generalized Anderson Hamiltonian, consisting of tight-binding one-electron terms parametrizing hydrogenated amorphous silicon plus a local interaction term. The energy level splittings approach an asymptotic value for large valu…
Polymeric nitrogen with single bonds can be created from the molecular form at high pressure and due to large energy difference between triple and single bonds it is interesting as energetic material. Its structure and properties are, however, still not well understood. We studied amorphous nitrogen by \textit{ab initio} simulations, employing molecular dynamics and evolutionary algorithms. Amorphous nitrogen was prepared at pressure of 120 GPa by quenching from hot liquid, by pressure-induced amorphization of molecular crystal and by evolutionary search. All three amorphous forms were found t…
The interface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in amorphous oxide matrix is studied through molecular dynamics simulations with the chemical environment described by the reactive force field model. Our results indicate that the Si NC-oxide interface is more involved than the previously proposed schemes which were based on solely simple bridge or double bonds. We identify different types of three-coordinated oxygen complexes, previously not noted. The abundance and the charge distribution of each oxygen complex is determined as a function of the NC size as well as the transition…
The thermally-induced structural evolution of silicon- and oxygen-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:Si:O) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy, as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The spectroscopic results indicate that the introduction of Si and O in hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) increases the activation energy for the conversion of sp3- to sp2-bonded C. MD simulations indicate that the higher thermal stability of a-C:H:Si:O compared to a-C:H derives from the lower fraction of strained C-C sp3 bonds in a-C:H:Si:O.
The microstructure, electronic structure, and chemical bonding of chromium carbide thin films with different carbon contents have been investigated with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption-emission spectroscopies. Most of the films can be described as amorphous nanocomposites with non-crystalline CrCx in an amorphous carbon matrix. At high carbon contents, graphene-like structures are formed in the amorphous carbon matrix. At 47 at% carbon content, randomly oriented nanocrystallites are formed creating a complex microstr…
Locally, the atomic structure in well annealed amorphous silicon appears similar to that of crystalline silicon. We address here the question whether a point defect, specifically a vacancy, in amorphous silicon also resembles that in the crystal. From density functional theory calculations of a large number of nearly defect free configurations, relaxed after an atom has been removed, we conclude that there is little similarity. The analysis is based on formation energy, relaxation energy, bond lengths, bond angles, Voronoï volume, coordination, atomic charge and electronic gap states. All thes…
We report first principles ab initio density functional calculations of hydrogen dynam- ics in hydrogenated amorphous silicon. Thermal motion of the host Si atoms drives H diffusion, as we demonstrate by direct simulation and explain with simple models. Si-Si bond centers and Si ring centers are local energy minima as expected. We also describe a new mechanism for break- ing Si-H bonds to release free atomic H into the network: a fluctuation bond center detachment (FBCD) assisted diffusion. H dynamics in a-Si:H is dominated by structural fluctuations intrinsic to the amorphous phase not presen…
On the basis of density functional calculations and using Bader's atom in molecule theory, this article presents quantitative microscopic analyses on the bonding properties of amorphous silicon (a-Si) which could reflect in the observable mechanical and electronic behaviors of this material. In addition, the occurrence and strength of quantum confinement of charge carriers in a composition of silicon crystal nano slabs (SiNSs) embedded in hydrogenated a-Si (a-Si:H) semiconductor are studied. It is shown that the strongest confinement effect happens for Si slabs limited in [100] direction. The …
Using the Activation-Relaxation Technique-nouveau, we search for two-level systems (TLSs) in models of amorphous silicon (a-Si). The TLSs are mechanisms related to internal mechanical dissipation and represent the main source of noise in the most sensitive frequency range of the largest gravitational wave detectors as well as one of the main sources of decoherence in many quantum computers. We show that in a-Si, the majority of the TLSs of interest fall into two main categories: bond-defect hopping where neighbors exchange a topological defect and the Wooten-Winer-Weaire bond exchange. The dis…
A thorough critical analysis of the theoretical relationships between the bond-angle dispersion in a-Si and the width of the transverse optical (TO) Raman peak is presented. It is shown that the discrepancies between them are drastically reduced when unified definitions for these magnitudes are used. This reduced dispersion in the predicted values of the bond-angle dispersion together with the broad agreement with its scarce direct determinations is then used to analyze the strain energy in partially relaxed pure a-Si. It is concluded that defect annihilation does not contribute appreciably to…
We investigate the amorphous structure, chemical bonding, and electrical properties of magnetron sputtered Fe1-xCx (0.21<x<0.72) thin films. X-ray, electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that the Fe1-xCx films are amorphous nanocomposites, consisting of a two-phase domain structure with Fe-rich carbidic FeCy, and a carbon-rich matrix. Pair distribution function analysis indicates a close-range order similar to those of crystalline Fe3C carbides in all films with additional graphene-like structures at high carbon content (71.8 at% C). From X-ray photoelectron spectroscop…
The local structure and chemical bonding in two-phase amorphous Cr$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$ nanocomposite thin films are investigated by Cr $K$-edge ($1s$) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies in comparison to theory. By utilizing the computationally efficient \textit{stochastic quenching} (SQ) technique, we reveal the complexity of different Cr-sites in the transition metal carbides, highlighting the need for large scale averaging to obtain theoretical XANES and EXAFS spectra for comparison with measurements. As shown in this w…
Amorphous metal oxide thin-film transistors (TFT) are fabricated using InOx-based semiconductors doped with TiO2, WO3 or SiO2. Although density of dopant is low in the film, change in the electrical properties showed strong dependence on the dopant species. We found that the dependence could be reasonably explained by the bond-dissociation energy. By incorporating the dopant with higher bond-dissociation energy, the film becomes less sensitive to oxygen partial pressure used during sputtering deposition and remains electrically stable to thermal annealing treatment. The concept of bond-dissoci…
We discuss the efficacy of evolutionary method for the purpose of structural analysis of amorphous solids. At present ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) based melt-quench technique is used and this deterministic approach has proven to be successful to study amorphous materials. We show that a stochastic approach motivated by Darwinian evolution can also be used to simulate amorphous structures. Applying this method, in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) based electronic, ionic and cell relaxation, we re-investigate two well known amorphous semiconductors, namely silicon and indium…
Amorphous silica deforms viscoplastically at elevated temperatures, as is common for brittle glasses. The key mechanism of viscoplastic deformation involves interatomic bond switching, which is known to be a thermally activated process. In this study, through systematic in-situ compression tests by scanning electron microscopy, the viscoplastic deformation of amorphous silica is observed without thermal activation. Furthermore, ductility does not increase monotonically with acceleration voltage and current density of the SEM e-beam but is maximized by a factor of three at a specific accelerati…
The paper presents an $ab$ $initio$ study of temperature-induced nanostructural evolution of hydrogen-rich voids in amorphous silicon. By using large $a$-Si models, obtained from classical molecular-dynamics simulations, with a realistic void-volume density of 0.2%, the dynamics of Si and H atoms on the surface of the nanometer-size cavities were studied and their effects on the shape and size of the voids were examined using first-principles density-functional simulations. The results from $ab$ $initio$ calculations were compared with those obtained from using the modified Stillinger-Weber po…
We propose a model for magnetic noise based on spin-flips (not electron-trapping) of paramagnetic dangling-bonds at the amorphous-semiconductor/oxide interface. A wide distribution of spin-flip times is derived from the single-phonon cross-relaxation mechanism for a dangling-bond interacting with the tunneling two-level systems of the amorphous interface. The temperature and frequency dependence is sensitive to three energy scales: The dangling-bond spin Zeeman energy delta, as well as the minimum (E_min) and maximum (E_max) values for the energy splittings of the tunneling two-level systems. …
We use the maximally-localized Wannier function method to study bonding properties in amorphous silicon. This study represents, to our knowledge, the first application of the Wannier-function analysis to a disordered system. Our results show that, in the presence of disorder, this method is extremely helpful in providing an unambiguous picture of the bond distribution. In particular, defect configurations can be studied and characterized with a novel degree of accuracy that was not available before.
We analyze the structure of the energy landscape of a well-relaxed 1000-atom model of amorphous silicon using the activation-relaxation technique (ART nouveau). Generating more than 40,000 events starting from a single minimum, we find that activated mechanisms are local in nature, that they are distributed uniformly throughout the model and that the activation energy is limited by the cost of breaking one bond, independently of the complexity of the mechanism. The overall shape of the activation-energy-barrier distribution is also insensitive to the exact details of the configuration, indicat…
A crucially important material parameter for all amorphous solids is the yield stress, which is the value of the stress for which the material yields to plastic flow when it is strained quasi-statically at zero temperature. It is difficult in laboratory experiments to determine what parameters of the inter-particle potential effect the value of the yield stress. Here we use the versatility of numerical simulations to study the dependence of the yield stress on the parameters of the inter-particle potential. We find a very simple dependence on the fundamental scales which characterize the repul…
Localized basis ab initio molecular dynamics simulation within the density functional framework has been used to generate realistic configurations of amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC). Our approach consists of constructing a set of smart initial configurations that conform essential geometrical and structural aspects of the materials obtained from experimental data, which is subsequently driven via first-principles force-field to obtain the best solution in a reduced solution space. A combination of a priori information (primarily structural and topological) along with the ab-initio optimizati…
We present a comprehensive theory of the circularly polarized luminescence and its dependence on strain in spin-polarized Si and Ge. Symmetries of wavefunctions and interactions are used to derive concise ratios between intensities of the right and left circularly polarized luminescence for each of the dominant phonon-assisted optical transitions. These ratios are then used to explain the circular polarization degrees of the luminescence peaks in the spectra of biaxially-strained Si and Ge, and of relaxed ${\rm{Si}}_{1-x}{\rm{Ge}}_{x}$ alloys. The spectra are numerically calculated by a combin…
Using the recently-proposed ``activation-relaxation technique'' for optimizing complex structures, we develop a structural model appropriate to a-GaAs which is almost free of odd-membered rings, i.e., wrong bonds, and possesses an almost perfect coordination of four. The model is found to be superior to structures obtained from much more computer-intensive tight-binding or quantum molecular-dynamics simulations. For the elemental system a-Si, where wrong bonds do not exist, the cost in elastic energy for removing odd-membered rings is such that the traditional continuous-random network is appr…
The structure of very high-density amorphous (VHDA) ice has been modelled by positionally disordering three crystalline phases, namely ice IV, VI and XII. These phases were chosen because only they are stable or metastable in the region of the ice phase diagram where VHDA ice is formed, and their densities are comparable to that of VHDA ice. An excellent fit to the medium range of the experimentally observed pair-correlation function g(r) of VHDA ice was obtained by introducing disorder into the positions of the H2O molecules, as well as small amounts of molecular rotational disorder, disorder…
We develop a theoretical model, relying on the well established sp3 bond-orbital theory, to describe the strain-induced $χ^{(2)}$ in tetrahedrally coordinated centrosymmetric covalent crystals, like silicon. With this approach we are able to describe every component of the $χ^{(2)}$ tensor in terms of a linear combination of strain gradients and only two parameters $α$ and $β$ which can be estimated theoretically. The resulting formula can be applied to the simulation of the strain distribution of a practical strained silicon device, providing an extraordinary tool for optimization of its opti…

Amorphous silicon films prepared by electron beam evaporation have systematically and substantially greater atomic density for higher thickness, higher growth temperature, and slower deposition rate, reaching the density of crystalline Si when films of thickness greater than ~300 nm are grown at 425 $^{\circ}$C and at <1 $Å$/sec. A combination of spectroscopic techniques provide insight into atomic disorder, local strains, dangling bonds, and nanovoids. Electron diffraction shows that the short-range order of the amorphous silicon is similar at all growth temperatures, but fluctuation electron…
The ideal intrinsic barriers to domain switching in c-phase PbTiO_3 (PTO), PbZrO_3 (PZO), and PbZr_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PZT) are investigated via first-principles computational methods. The effects of epitaxial strain on the atomic structure, ferroelectric response, barrier to coherent domain reversal, domain-wall energy, and barrier to domain-wall translation are studied. It is found that PTO has a larger polarization, but smaller energy barrier to domain reversal, than PZO. Consequentially the idealized coercive field is over two times smaller in PTO than PZO. The Ti--O bond length is more sensitiv…
Structural and electronic properties of amorphous and single-phase polycrystalline films of gamma- and kappa-In2Se3 have been measured. The stable gamma phase nucleates homogeneously in the film bulk and has a high resistivity, while the metastable kappa phase nucleates at the film surface and has a moderate resistivity. The microstructures of hot-deposited and post-annealed cold-deposited gamma films are quite different but the electronic properties are similar. The increase in the resistivity of amorphous In2Se3 films upon annealing is interpreted in terms of the replacement of In-In bonds w…
Ultranonocrystalline diamond/hydrogenated amorphous carbon composite thin films consist of three different components; ultrananocrystalline diamond crystallites, hydrogenated amorphous carbon, and grain boundaries between them. Since grain boundaries contain a lot of dangling bonds and unsaturated bonds, they would be a cause of carrier trap center degrading device performance in possible applications such as UV photo-detectors. We experimentally demonstrate hydrogen atoms preferentially incorporate at grain boundaries and terminate dangling bonds by means of several spectroscopic techniques. …
Monte Carlo simulations, supplemented by ab initio calculations, shed light into the energetics and thermodynamic stability of nanostructured amorphous carbon. The interaction of the embedded nanocrystals with the host amorphous matrix is shown to determine in a large degree the stability and the relative energy differences among carbon phases. Diamonds are stable structures in matrices with sp^3 fraction over 60%. Schwarzites are stable in low-coordinated networks. Other sp^2-bonded structures are metastable.
Ultrananocrystalline diamond/hydrogenated amorphous carbon composite thin films synthesized via coaxial arc plasma possess a marked structural feature of diamond grains embedded in an amorphous carbon and a hydrogenated amorphous carbon matrix which are the largest constituents of the films. Since the amorphous nature yields much larger light absorption coefficients as well as a generation source of photo-induced carriers with UV rays, these films can be potential candidates for deep-UV photodetector applications. From some previous studies p-type conduction of the films has been realized by d…
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the plastic response of a model glass to a local shear transformation in a quiescent system. The deformation of the material is induced by a spherical inclusion that is gradually strained into an ellipsoid of the same volume and then reverted back into the sphere. We show that the number of cage-breaking events increases with increasing strain amplitude of the shear transformation. The results of numerical simulations indicate that the density of cage jumps is larger in the cases of weak damping or slow shear transformation. Remarkabl…
We present a detailed study of the effect of local chemical ordering on the structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of amorphous gallium arsenide. Using the recently-proposed ``activation-relaxation technique'' and empirical potentials, we have constructed two 216-atom tetrahedral continuous random networks with different topological properties, which were further relaxed using tight-binding molecular dynamics. The first network corresponds to the traditional, amorphous, Polk-type, network, randomly decorated with Ga and As atoms. The second is an amorphous structure with a minimum of…
The development of efficient low-loss electro-optic and nonlinear components based on silicon or its related compounds, such as nitrides and oxides, is expected to dramatically enhance silicon photonics by eliminating the need for non-CMOS-compatible materials. While bulk Si is centrosymmetric and thus displays no second-order (\c{hi}(2)) effects, a body of experimental evidence accumulated in the last decade demonstrates that when a strain gradient is present, a significant \c{hi}(2) and Pockels coefficient can be observed. In this work we connect a strain-gradient-induced \c{hi}(2) with anot…
In this paper we discuss the application of current it ab initio computer simulation techniques to hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). We begin by discussing thermal fluctuation in the number of coordination defects in the material, and its temperature dependence. We connect this to the ``fluctuating bond center detachment" mechanism for liberating H bonded to Si atoms. Next, from extended thermal MD simulation, we illustrate various mechanisms of H motion. The dynamics of the lattice is then linked to the electrons, and we point out that the squared electron-lattice coupling (and the the…
We use a Monte Carlo bond-switching method to study systematically the thermodynamic properties of a "continuous random network" model, the canonical model for such amorphous systems as a-Si and a-SiO$_2$. Simulations show first-order "melting" into an amorphous state, and clear evidence for a glass transition in the supercooled liquid. The random-network model is also extended to study heterogeneous structures, such as the interface between amorphous and crystalline Si.
In strained mechanical resonators, the concurrence of tensile stress and geometric nonlinearity dramatically reduces dissipation. This phenomenon, dissipation dilution, is employed in mirror suspensions of gravitational wave interferometers and at the nanoscale, where soft-clamping and strain engineering have allowed extremely high quality factors. However, these techniques have so far only been applied in amorphous materials, specifically silicon nitride. Crystalline materials exhibit significantly lower intrinsic damping at cryogenic temperatures, due to the absence of two level systems in t…
