We study the large $ N$ sign oscillation of the twisted indices for 3D theories of class $\mathcal{R}$ obtained from M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold. Holographically, the oscillatory behavior can be understood from the imaginary part of on-shell actions for the two Euclidean supergravity solutions, Bolt$_{\pm}$ with $p=0$, which are Wick rotation of magnetically charged AdS$_4$ black holes. The two solutions have the same imaginary part with opposite sign. The imaginary part comes from the $F\wedge F$-term in the supergravity and the coefficient is proportional to the Chern-Simons invariant of 3-manifold. Combining the holographic computation with 3D-3D relation for twisted indices, we propose a non-trivial mathematical conjecture regarding the phase factor of a twisted Reidemeister-Ray-Singer torsion on hyperbolic 3-manifold.
Following work on theories with SU(N) gauge groups, we perform a large-N saddle-point approximation of the measure for ADHM multi-instantons in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories with symplectic or orthogonal gauge groups. For Sp(N) we find that a saddle-point only exists in the even instanton charge sector. For either Sp(N) or SO(N) the saddle-point solution parametrizes AdS_5 x RP^5, the dual supergravity geometry in the AdS/CFT correspondence for these theories. The instanton measure at large-N has the form of the partition function of ten-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory with a u…
We find new asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ Euclidean supersymmetric solutions of the STU model in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. These "black saddles" have an $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$ boundary at asymptotic infinity and cap off smoothly in the interior. The solutions can be uplifted to eleven dimensions and are holographically dual to the topologically twisted ABJM theory on $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$. We show explicitly that the on-shell action of the black saddle solutions agrees exactly with the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory in the planar limit for general valu…

One of the most striking evidences of the information loss paradox is that, according to the Hawking's calculation, the correlation functions of a test scalar field exponentially decay in time. In this paper, I argue that a judicious use of the steepest descent expansion on the classical saddle point (the Black Hole background), is enough to change this early time decay into a late time growing, in agreement with information retrieval. I will explicitly show this in the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. There, the so-called "ramp" in the bulk tow-point function, is analytically obtained without the n…
By applying the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne equivariant integration formula upon double dimensional integrals, we find a way to compute the matrix integral representations of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal indices. The final formula allows us to easily extract analytic results in the large-rank expansion of certain theories. As an example, we compute the leading one-loop corrections to the effective action of the known complex saddles in those theories. For a superconformal index of $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we use the equivariant integration formula and the Picard-Lefschetz method to s…
Considering two dimensional gravity coupled to a CFT, we show that a semiclassical black hole can be described in terms of two Liouville theories matched at the horizon. The black hole exterior corresponds to a space-like while the interior to a time-like Liouville theory. This matching automatically implies that a semiclassical black hole has an infinite entropy. The path integral description of the time-like Liouville theory (the Black Hole interior) is studied and it is found that the correlation functions of the coupled CFT-gravity system are dominated by two (complex) saddle points, even …
The late-time behavior of spectral form factor (SFF) encodes the inherent discreteness of a quantum system, which should be generically non-vanishing. We study an index analog of the microcanonical spectrum form factor in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In the large $N$ limit and at large enough energy, the most dominant saddle corresponds to the black hole in the AdS bulk. This gives rise to the slope that decreases exponentially for a small imaginary chemical potential, which is a natural analog of an early time. We find that the `late-time' behavior is governed by …
We use the techniques of supersymmetric localization to compute the BPS black hole entropy in N=2 supergravity. We focus on the n_v+1 vector multiplets on the black hole near horizon background which is AdS_2 x S^2 space. We find the localizing saddle point of the vector multiplets by solving the localization equations, and compute the exact one loop partition function on the saddle point. Furthermore, we propose the appropriate functional integration measure. Through this measure, the one loop determinant is written in terms of the radius of the physical metric, which depends on the localizin…

We discuss the entropy for the extremal BTZ black hole and the extremal EBTZ black hole. The EBTZ black hole means the BTZ black hole embedded in a five-dimensional(5D) black hole. The six-dimensional(6D) black string with traveling waves is introduced as a concrete model for realizing the AdS/CFT correspondence. The traveling waves carry the momentum distribution $p(u)$ which plays an important role in counting the entropy and establishing the correspondence. It turns out that the EBTZ black hole is consistent with the AdS/CFT correspondence.
We consider the effect of grey-body factors on the entanglement island prescription for computing the entropy of an arbitrary subset of the Hawking radiation of an evaporating black hole. When there is a non-trivial grey-body factor, the modes reflected back into the black hole affect the position of the quantum extremal surfaces at a subleading level with respect to the scrambling time. The grey-body factor allows us to analyse the role of irreversibility in the evaporation. In particular, we show that irreversibility allows multiple saddles to dominate the entropy, rather than just two as ex…
We calculate the scalar quasinormal modes of warped $AdS_3$ black holes analytically. We find that in general they are not in agreement with the prediction of the usual AdS/CFT correspondence. Nevertheless, for the black hole not deviating far from BTZ black hole, the quasinormal frequencies are still well consistent with AdS/CFT correspondence.
We make some observations regarding string/black hole correspondence with a view to understanding the nature of the quantum degrees of freedom of a black hole in string theory. In particular, we compare entropy change in analogous string and black hole processes in order to support the interpretation of the area law entropy as arising from stringy constituents.
The microscopic formula for the degeneracies of 1/8 BPS black holes in type II string theory compactified on a six dimensional torus can be expressed as a sum of several terms. One of the terms is a function of the Cremmer-Julia invariant and gives the leading contribution to the entropy in the large charge limit. The other terms, which give exponentially subleading contribution, depend not only on the Cremmer-Julia invariant, but also on the arithmetic properties of the charges, and in fact exist only when the charges satisfy special arithmetic properties. We identify the origin of these term…
We construct black hole geometries in AdS$_3$ with non-trivial values of KdV charges. The black holes are holographically dual to quantum KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in 2d CFT. They satisfy thermodynamic identity and thus are saddle point configurations of the Euclidean gravity path integral. We discuss holographic calculation of the KdV generalized partition function and show that for a certain value of chemical potentials new geometries, not the conventional BTZ ones, are the leading saddles.
We calculate the correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for five dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black holes due to thermodynamic fluctuations. The result is then compared with the boundary gauge theory entropy corrections via AdS/CFT correspondence. We then further generalise our analysis for the rotating black hole in five dimensional AdS space.
In the context of studying black hole singularities by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the BTZ black hole by a scalar field propagating on it and the corresponding two-point Green functions. We explore how positions inside the horizon are encoded in the boundary theory. The main idea is to relate two different semi-classical approximations of the Green function and see how this indicates the bulk-boundary correspondence. From a key observation of Festucia and Liu, which is a frequency-geodesic identification, we deduce a geodesic approximation from the saddle point approximation. As an ap…
In a recent essay, we discussed the possibility of using polymer sizing to model the collapse of a single, long excited string to a black hole. In this letter, we apply this idea to bring further support to string/black hole correspondence. In particular, we reproduce Horowitz and Polchinki's results for self-gravitating fundamental strings and speculate on the nature of the quantum degrees of freedom of black holes in string theory.
We study the effects of the introduction of a $\vartheta$ term in minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions. We show why this term is not present in supergravity duals of field theories arising on wrapped $M2$-branes, but is there in the case of $M5$-branes wrapping hyperbolic manifolds $Σ_3$, and compute the higher-derivative corrections. Having proved that the on-shell supergravity action of any supersymmetric solution can be expressed in terms of data from the fixed points of a Killing vector, we show that it is proportional to a complex topological invariant of $Σ_3$. This is consiste…
I was asked to give a brief review of the black hole-string correspondence as a warm-up for a longer SITP-group discussion of a recent paper by Chen, Maldacena, and Witten. Here are my notes in written form.
We compare the entropy as a function of energy of excited strings and black strings in an asymptotically plane wave background at the level of the correspondence principle. For the plane wave supported by the NSNS 3-form flux, neither the entropy formula nor the cross-over scale is affected by the presence of the flux and the correspondence is found to hold. For the plane wave supported by the RR 3-form flux, both the entropy and the cross-over point are modified, but the correspondence is still found to hold.
We provide a realization of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence in terms of asymptotic symmetries of the AdS$_2\times$S$^1$ and AdS$_2\times$S$^2$ geometries arising in near-extremal BTZ and Reissner-Nordström black holes. Cardy's formula exactly accounts for the deviation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy from extremality. We also argue that this result can be extended to more general black holes near extremality.
The string-black hole correspondence is considered in the context of the correspondence principle proposed recently by Horowitz and Polchinski. We demonstrate that the entropy of string states and the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole can be matched including the subleading terms which depend on mass logarithmically. We argue the necessity to include the string interaction (with coupling $g$) in the consideration and propose the $g^2$-dependent modification of the string entropy. The matching of it with the entropy of Schwarzschild black hole is analyzed.
We revisit the stability of black hole saddles for the Euclidean path integral describing the canonical partition function $Z(β)$ for gravity inside a spherical reflecting cavity. The boundary condition at the cavity wall couples the transverse-traceless (TT) and pure-trace modes that are traditionally used to describe fluctuations about Euclidean Schwarzschild black holes in infinite-volume asymptotically flat and asymototically AdS spacetimes. This coupling obstructs the familiar Gibbons-Hawking-Perry treatment of the conformal factor problem, as Wick rotation of the pure-trace modes would r…
The saddle point approximation to the partition functions is an important way of deriving the thermodynamical properties of black holes. However, there are certain black hole models and some mathematically analog mechanical models for which this method can not be applied directly. This is due to the fact that their action evaluated on a classical solution is not finite and its first variation does not vanish for all consistent boundary conditions. These problems can be dealt with by adding a counter-term to the classical action, which is a solution of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation…
We apply a recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to extremal supersymmetric five-dimensional charged spinning black holes, constructed by Breckenridge, Myers, Peet and Vafa. By computing the central charge of the dual CFT and Frolov-Thorne temperature, Cardy's formula succeeds in reproducing Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
Recent work has uncovered a correspondence between theories in anti-de Sitter space, and those on its boundary. This has important implications for black holes in string theory which have near-horizon AdS geometries. Using the effective coupling to the boundary conformal field theory, I compute the low-energy, s-wave absorption cross-sections for a minimally coupled scalar in the near-extremal four- and five-dimensional black holes. The results agree precisely with semi-classical gravity calculations. Agreement for fixed scalars, and for the BTZ black hole, is also found.
We present a detailed discussion of AdS_3 black holes and their connection to two-dimensional conformal field theories via the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our emphasis is on deriving refined versions of black hole partition functions, that include the effect of higher derivative terms in the spacetime action as well as non-perturbative effects. We include background material on gravity in AdS_3, in the context of holographic renormalization.
We consider a thought experiment in which an energetic massless string probes a "stringhole" (a heavy string lying on the correspondence curve between strings and black holes) at large enough impact parameter for the regime to be under theoretical control. The corresponding, explicitly unitary, $S$-matrix turns out to be perturbatively sensitive to the microstate of the stringhole: in particular, at leading order in $l_s/b$, it depends on a projection of the stringhole's Lorentz-contracted quadrupole moment. The string-black hole correspondence is therefore violated if one assumes quantum hair…
Contrary to the wide-spread belief, the correspondence principle does not dictate any relation between the asymptotics of quasinormal modes and the spectrum of quantized black holes. Moreover, this belief is in conflict with simple physical arguments.
We construct an action, which governs the dynamics of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and perform the canonical quantization. The quantum action is given by a $SL(2,R)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model on the boundary coupled to the classical anti-de Sitter background, representing a massless BTZ black hole. The coupling, determined by a one-cocyle condition, is found to give dominant contribution to the central charge of Virasoro algebra. The entropy of the BTZ black hole is discussed from the point view of the AdS/CFT correspondence and an explanation is given to the puzzle of black …
We study AdS/CFT correspondence in the case of AdS3. We obtain the statistical entropy of the BTZ black hole in terms of the correct central charge and the conformal dimensions for the states corresponding to the BTZ black hole. We point out the difference between our method and the old fashioned approaches based on SL(2,R) Wess-Zumino-Witten model or Liouville theory.
We extend the method of Kerr/CFT correspondence recently proposed in arXiv:0809.4266 [hep-th] to the extremal (charged) Kerr black hole embedded in the five-dimensional Gödel universe. With the aid of the central charges in the Virasoro algebra and the Frolov-Thorne temperatures, together with the use of the Cardy formula, we have obtained the microscopic entropies that precisely agree with the ones macroscopically calculated by Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
We extend the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to examine the dual conformal field theory of Kaluza-Klein black hole. For the extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole, the central charge and temperature of the dual conformal field are calculated, and the microscopic entropy calculated by using Cardy formula agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal Kaluza-Klein black hole. For the non-extremal case, we investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of Kaluza-Klein black hole by studying the near-region wave equation of a neutral massless scalar field, and find the left and right tempe…
