Let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated graded modules over a graded complete intersection $R$ such that $\operatorname{Ext}_R^i(M,N)$ has finite length for all $i\gg 0$. We show that the even and odd Hilbert polynomials, which give the lengths of $\operatorname{Ext}^i_R(M,N)$ for all large even $i$ and all large odd $i$, have the same degree and leading coefficient whenever the highest degree of these polynomials is at least the dimension of $M$ or $N$. Refinements of this result are given when $R$ is regular in small codimensions.
On a smooth variety, Serre's intersection formula computes intersection multiplicities via an alternating sum of the lengths of Tor groups. When the variety is singular, the corresponding sum can be a divergent series. But there are alternate geometric approaches for assigning (often fractional) intersection multiplicities in some singular settings. Our motivating question comes from Fulton, who asks whether an analytic continuation of the divergent series from Serre's formula can be related to these fractional multiplicities. By applying work of Avramov and Buchweitz, we positively answer Ful…
Let $A$ be a graded complete intersection over a field and $B$ the monomial complete intersection with the generators of the same degrees as $A$. The EGH conjecture says that if $I$ is a graded ideal in $A$, then there should be an ideal $J$ in $B$ such that $B/J$ and $A/I$ have the same Hilbert function. We show that if the EGH conjecture is true, then it can be used to prove that every graded complete intersection over any field has the Sperner property.
We show that if a graded submodule of a Noetherian module cannot be written as a proper intersection of graded submodules, then it cannot be written as a proper intersection of submodules at all. More generally, we show that a natural extension of the index of reducibility to the graded setting coincides with the ordinary index of reducibility. We also investigate the question of uniqueness of the components in a graded-irreducible decomposition, as well as the relation between the index of reducibility of a non-graded ideal and that of its largest graded subideal.
We consider ideals $I$ in a Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ over the simplical complex $Δ$, such that the tight closure of $I$, $I^*$, is equal to $\mathfrak{m}$, the standard graded maximal ideal of $k[Δ]$. We determine the minimal number of generators of $I$ to be the $\dim Δ+1$ and note the important role this value plays in bounding the intersection of all such ideals $I$. We make mention of this intersection in special cases of Stanley-Reisner rings. We conclude with a description of how this work relates to integral closure.
Set $ A := Q/({\bf z}) $, where $ Q $ is a polynomial ring over a field, and $ {\bf z} = z_1,\ldots,z_c $ is a homogeneous $ Q $-regular sequence. Let $ M $ and $ N $ be finitely generated graded $ A $-modules, and $ I $ be a homogeneous ideal of $ A $. We show that (1) $ \mathrm{reg}\left( \mathrm{Ext}_A^{i}(M, I^nN) \right) \le ρ_N(I) \cdot n - f \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{i}{2} \right\rfloor + b \mbox{ for all } i, n \ge 0 $, (2) $ \mathrm{reg}\left( \mathrm{Ext}_A^{i}(M,N/I^nN) \right) \le ρ_N(I) \cdot n - f \cdot \left\lfloor \frac{i}{2} \right\rfloor + b' \mbox{ for all } i, n \ge 0 $, whe…
We let R be a one-dimensional graded complete intersection, satisfying certain degree conditions which are satisfied whenever R is a numerical semigroup ring of embedding dimension at least three. We show that a graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-module M satisfies the Huneke-Wiegand Conjecture provided there exists an Auslander-Reiten sequence ending in M whose middle term has at least two nonfree direct summands.
In this work, we prove that if a graded, commutative algebra $R$ over a field $k$ is not Koszul then, denoting by $\mathfrak{m}$ the maximal homogeneous ideal of $R$ and by $M$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, the nonzero modules of the form $\mathfrak{m} M$ have infinite Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We also prove that over complete intersections which are not Koszul, a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ has infinite regularity. Finally, we relate the vanishing of the graded deviations of $R$ to having a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ of finite regularity.
Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables of degree $d$ over a field $K$. Let $A(F)$ be the associated Artinian graded $K$-algebra. If $B \subset A(F)$ is a subalgebra of $A(F)$ which is Gorenstein with the same socle degree as $A(F)$, we describe the Macaulay dual generator for $B$ in terms of $F$. Furthermore when $n=d$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the polynomial $F$ for $A(F)$ to be a complete intersection.
Let $R = S/I$ be a quotient of a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ by an ideal $I$ generated by quadrics. If $R$ is Koszul, a question of Avramov, Conca, and Iyengar asks whether the Betti numbers of $R$ over $S$ can be bounded above by binomial coefficients on the minimal number of generators of $I$. Motivated by previous results for Koszul algebras defined by three quadrics, we give a complete classification of the structure of Koszul almost complete intersections and, in the process, give an affirmative answer to the above question for all such rings.
We consider complete intersection ideals in a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero that are stable under the action of the symmetric group permuting the variables. We determine the possible representation types for these ideals, and describe formulas for the graded characters of the corresponding quotient rings.
We study properties of the resolution of almost Gorenstein artinian algebras $R/I,$ i.e. algebras defined by ideals $I$ such that $I=J+(f),$ with $J$ Gorenstein ideal and $f\in R.$ Such algebras generalize the well known almost complete intersection artinian algebras. Then we give a new explicit description of the resolution and of the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection ideals of codimension $3$ and we characterize the ideals whose graded Betti numbers can be achieved using artinian monomial ideals.
There is a well known link from the first topic in the title to the third one. In this paper we thread that link through the second topic. The central result is a criterion for the tensor nilpotence of morphisms of perfect complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in terms of a numerical invariant of the complexes known as their level. Applications to local rings include a strengthening of the Improved New Intersection Theorem, short direct proofs of several results equivalent to it, and lower bounds on the ranks of the modules in every finite free complex that admits a structure of differe…
Given a graded complete intersection ideal $J = (f_1, \dots, f_c) \subseteq k[x_0, \dots, x_n] = S$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$, we show that if $S/J$ has an isolated non-F-pure point then the Frobenius action on top local cohomology $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in sufficiently negative degrees, and we compute the least degree of any kernel element. If $S/J$ has an isolated singularity, we are also able to give an effective bound on $p$ ensuring the Frobenius action on $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in all negative degr…
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the second graded Betti numbers of $J_G$, and we obtain a minimal presentation of it when $G$ is a tree or a unicyclic graph. We classify all graphs whose binomial edge ideals are almost complete intersection, prove that they are generated by a $d$-sequence and that the Rees algebra of their binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay. We also obtain an explicit description of the defining ideal of the Rees …
We study the footprint function, with respect to a monomial order, of complete intersection graded ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field. For graded ideals of dimension one, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give a formula for the footprint function and a sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function. This allows us to recover a formula for the minimum distance of an affine cartesian code and the fact that in this case the minimum distance and the footprint functions coincide. Then we present an extension of a result of Alon and Füredi, a…
Notions of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and of $a^*$ invariant were extended from standard graded algebras to the toric setting. We here focus our attention on the standard multigraded case, which corresponds to a product of $k$ projective spaces. A natural notion for a $\mathbb Z^k$-graded module is its support: degrees in which it is not zero. A stabilized version of it is adding $-\mathbb N^k$, in order for the complement (vanishing region) to be stable by addition of $\mathbb N^k$. Cohomology of twists of a sheaf on a product of projective spaces, provided by a graded module, are given b…
We show the Cohen-Macaulayness and describe the canonical module of residual intersections $J=\mathfrak{a}\colon_R I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, under sliding depth type hypotheses. For this purpose, we construct and study, using a recent article of Hassanzadeh and the second named author, a family of complexes that contains important informations on a residual intersection and its canonical module. We also determine several invariants of residual intersections as the graded canonical module, the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the type. Finally, whenever $I$ is…
Let $G$ be a group with identity $e$. Let $R$ be a $G$-graded commutative ring and $M$ a graded $R$-module. In this paper, we introduce the concept of graded primary-like submodules as a new generalization of graded primary ideals and give some basic results about graded primary-like submodules of graded modules. Special attention has been paid, when graded submodules satisfies the gr-primeful property, to find extra properties of these graded submodules.
In recent work of T. Cassidy and the author, a notion of complete intersection was defined for (non-commutative) regular skew polynomial rings, defining it using both algebraic and geometric tools, where the commutative definition is a special case. In this article, we extend the definition to a larger class of algebras that contains regular graded skew Clifford algebras, the coordinate ring of quantum matrices and homogenizations of universal enveloping algebras. Regular algebras are often considered to be non-commutative analogues of polynomial rings, so the results herein support that viewp…
Let $X$ be a set of $4$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}^2$ with homogeneous coordinate ring $R$. We classify indecomposable graded MCM modules over $R$ by reducing the classification to the Four Subspace problem solved by Nazarova and Gel$'$fand-Ponomarev, or equivalently to the representation theory of the $\widetilde{D}_4$ quiver. In particular, the $\mathbb{P}^1$ tubular family of regular representations corresponds to matrix factorizations of the pencil of conics going through $X$, with smooth conics $Q_{t}$ corresponding to rank one tubes and the singular conics $Q_0, Q_1, Q_{\infty}$ givin…
Let $H$ be a numerical semigroup. We give effective bounds for the multiplicity $e(H)$ when the associated graded ring $\operatorname{gr}_\mathfrak{m} K[H]$ is defined by quadrics. We classify Koszul complete intersection semigroups in terms of gluings. Furthermore, for several classes of numerical semigroups considered in the literature (arithmetic, compound, special almost complete intersections, $3$-semigroups, symmetric or pseudo-symmetric $4$-semigroups) we classify those which are Koszul.
We give a two step method to study certain questions regarding associated graded module of a Cohen-Macaulay (CM) module $M$ w.r.t an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $\mathfrak{a}$ in a complete Noetherian local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$. The first step, we call it complete intersection approximation, enables us to reduce to the case when both $A$, $ G_\mathfrak{a}(A) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} \mathfrak{a}^n/\mathfrak{a}^{n+1} $ are complete intersections and $M$ is a maximal CM $A$-module. The second step consists of analyzing the classical filtration $\{Hom_A(M,\mathfrak{a}^n) \}_{\mathbb{Z}}$ of the…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A numerical characterization of all possible extremal Betti numbers of any graded submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module is given.
Motivated by notions from coding theory, we study the generalized minimum distance (GMD) function $δ_I(d,r)$ of a graded ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field using commutative algebraic methods. It is shown that $δ_I$ is non-decreasing as a function of $r$ and non-increasing as a function of $d$. For vanishing ideals over finite fields, we show that $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing as a function of $d$ until it stabilizes. We also study algebraic invariants of Geramita ideals. Those ideals are graded, unmixed, $1$-dimensional and their associated primes are generated by linear fo…
