Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic $p$, $R$ be a Gorenstein graded $k$-algebra, and $S=R/J$ be an artinian quotient of $R$ by a homogeneous ideal.
We ask how the socle degrees of $S$ are related to the socle degrees of $F_R^e(S)=R/J^{[q]}$. If $S$ has finite projective dimension as an $R$-module, then the socles of $S$ and $F_R^e(S)$ have the same dimension and the socle degrees are related by the formula: $$D_i=qd_i-(q-1)a(R),$$ where $$ d_1\le >...\le d_{\ell}\quad\text{and}\quad D_1\le ... \le D_{\ell}$$ are the socle degrees $S$ and $F_R^e(S)$, respectively, and $a(R)$ is the $a$-invariant of the graded ring $R$, as introduced by Goto and Watanabe. We prove the converse when $R$ is a complete intersection.
We first describe a situation in which every graded Betti number in the tail of the resolution of $\frac RJ$ may be read from the socle degrees of $\frac RJ$. Then we apply the above result to the ideals $J$ and $J^{[q]}$; and thereby describe a situation in which the graded Betti numbers in the tail of the resolution of $R/J^{[q]}$ are equal to the graded Betti numbers in the tail of a shift of the resolution of $R/J$.
Let $(R, m)$ be a local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $q$ a varying power of $p$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the socle of $R/I^{[q]}$ where $I$ is an $m$ -primary ideal of $R$. In the graded case, we define the notion of diagonal $F$-threshold of $R$ as the limit of the top socle degree of $R/m^{[q]}$ over $q$ when $q \to \infty$. Diagonal $F$-threshold exists as a positive number (rational number in the latter case) when: (1) $R$ is either a complete intersection or $R$ is $F$-pure on the punctured spectrum; (2) $R$ is a two dimensional normal domain. In the latter case, we al…
In this paper we study Hilbert functions and isomorphism classes of Artinian level local algebras via Macaulay's inverse system. Upper and lower bounds concerning numerical functions admissible for level algebras of fixed type and socle degree are known. For each value in this range we exhibit a level local algebra with that Hilbert function, provided that the socle degree is at most three. Furthermore we prove that level local algebras of socle degree three and maximal Hilbert function are graded. In the graded case the extremal strata have been parametrized by Cho and Iarrobino.
We define a notion of compressed local Artinian ring that does not require the ring to contain a field. Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a compressed local Artinian ring with odd top socle degree $s$, at least five, and $\operatorname{socle}(R)\cap \mathfrak m^{s-1}=\mathfrak m^s$. We prove that the Poincaré series of all finitely generated modules over $R$ are rational, sharing a common denominator, and that there is a Golod homomorphism from a complete intersection onto $R$.
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$ and $I$ be a homogeneous ideal of $R$. We study the question whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\Soc(H^{j}_{\fm}(R/I^t))_{<-ct}=0$ for all $t\geq 1$ and a variation of this question. We also draw a connection between this question and the notion of gauge-boundedness in prime characteristic.
It is unknown if an Artinian level O-sequence of codimension 3 and type $r (\ge 2)$ is unimodal, while it is known that any Gorenstein O-sequence of codimension 3 is unimodal. We show that some Artinian non-unimodal O-sequence of codimension 3 cannot be level. We also find another non-level case: if some Artinian algebra $A$ of codimension 3 has the Hilbert function $$\begin{matrix}\H & : & h_0 & h_1 & ... & h_{d-1} & \underbrace{h_d ... h_d}_{s\text{-times}} & h_{d+s}, \end{matrix} $$ such that $h_d<h_{d+s}$ and $s\ge 2$, then $A$ has a socle element in degree $d+s-2$, that is, $A$ is not lev…
In this paper we study the O-sequences of the local (or graded) $K$-algebras of socle degree $4.$ More precisely, we prove that an O-sequence $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, h_4)$, where $h_4 \geq 2,$ is the $h$-vector of a local level $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3\leq 3 h_4.$ We also prove that $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, 1)$ is the $h$-vector of a local Gorenstein $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3 \leq 3$ and $h_2 \leq \binom{h_3+1}{2}+(3-h_3).$ In each of these cases we give an effective method to construct a local level $K$-algebra with a given $h$-vector. Moreover we refine a result by Elias and Rossi by sho…
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
Koszulness of Gorenstein quadratic algebras of small socle degree is studied. In this note, we construct non-Koszul Gorenstein quadratic toric ring such that its socle degree is more than 3 by using stable set polytopes.
In this paper we consider Artin local K-algebras with maximal length in the class of Artin algebras with given embedding dimension and socle type. They have been widely studied by several authors, among others by Iarrobino, Fröberg and Laksov. If the local K-algebra is Gorenstein of socle degree 3, then the authors proved that it is canonically graded, i.e. analytically isomorphic to its associated graded ring. This unexpected result has been extended to compressed level K-algebras of socle degree 3 by A. De Stefani. In this paper we end the investigation proving that extremal Artin Gorenstein…
Let $\mathbb K$ be a field of characteristic 0. Let $Γ\subset\mathbb P^n_{\mathbb K}$ be a reduced finite set of points, not all contained in a hyperplane. Let $hyp(Γ)$ be the maximum number of points of $Γ$ contained in any hyperplane, and let $d(Γ)=|Γ|-hyp(Γ)$. If $I\subset R=\mathbb K[x_0,...,x_n]$ is the ideal of $Γ$, then in \cite{t1} it is shown that for $n=2,3$, $d(Γ)$ has a lower bound expressed in terms of some shift in the graded minimal free resolution of $R/I$. In these notes we show that this behavior is true in general, for any $n\geq 2$: $d(Γ)\geq A_n$, where $A_n=\min\{a_i-n\}$…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein local commutative and Noetherian $K$--algebra, with maximal ideal $M$. In the present paper we prove a structure theorem describing such kind of $K$--algebras satisfying $M^4=0$. We use this result in order to prove that such a $K$--algebra $A$ has rational Poincaré series and it is always smoothable in any embedding dimension, if $\dim_K M^2/M^3 \le 4$. We also prove that the generic Artinian Gorenstein local $K$--algebra with socle degree three has rational Poincaré series, in spite of the f…
We classify all possible $h$-vectors of graded artinian Gorenstein algebras in socle degree 4 and codimension $\leq 17$, and in socle degree 5 and codimension $\leq 25$. We obtain as a consequence that the least number of variables allowing the existence of a nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is 13 for socle degree 4, and 17 for socle degree 5. In particular, the smallest nonunimodal Gorenstein $h$-vector is $(1,13,12,13,1)$, which was constructed by Stanley in his 1978 seminal paper on level algebras. This solves a long-standing open question in this area. All of our results are characteristi…
A result by Macaulay states that an Artinian graded Gorenstein ring R of socle dimension one and socle degree b can be realized as the apolar ring of a homogeneous polynomial f of degree b. If R is the Jacobian ring of a smooth hypersurface g=0, then b is just equal to the degree of the Hessian polynomial of g. In this paper we investigate the relationship between f and the Hessian polynomial of g.
Roughly ten years ago, the following "Gorenstein Interval Conjecture" (GIC) was proposed: Whenever $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i,\dots,h_{e-i},\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ and $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i+α,\dots,h_{e-i}+α,\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ are both Gorenstein Hilbert functions for some $α\geq 2$, then $(1,h_1,\dots,h_i+β,\dots,h_{e-i}+β,\dots,h_{e-1},1)$ is also Gorenstein, for all $β=1,2,\dots,α-1$. Since an explicit characterization of which Hilbert functions are Gorenstein is widely believed to be hopeless, the GIC, if true, would at least provide the existence of a strong, and very natural, structural property for such ba…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$ and let $f \in R = k[x_0, ..., x_n]$ be homogeneous of degree $d$. We obtain a sharp bound on the degrees in which the Frobenius action on $H^n_\mathfrak{m}(R/fR)$ can be injective when $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$. As a corollary, we show that if $(R/fR)_\mathfrak{m}$ is not F-pure then $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$ if and only if the Frobenius action is injective in degrees $\le -n(d-1)$.
We conjecture that the set of all Hilbert functions of (artinian) level algebras enjoys a very natural form of regularity, which we call the {\em Interval Conjecture} (IC): If, for some positive integer $α$, $(1,h_1,...,h_i,...,h_e)$ and $(1,h_1,...,h_i+α,...,h_e)$ are both level $h$-vectors, then $(1,h_1,...,h_i+β,...,h_e)$ is also level for each integer $β=0,1,..., α.$ In the Gorenstein case, i.e. when $h_e=1$, we also supply the {\em Gorenstein Interval Conjecture} (GIC), which naturally generalizes the IC, and basically states that the same property simultaneously holds for any two symmetr…
Given a graded complete intersection ideal $J = (f_1, \dots, f_c) \subseteq k[x_0, \dots, x_n] = S$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$, we show that if $S/J$ has an isolated non-F-pure point then the Frobenius action on top local cohomology $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in sufficiently negative degrees, and we compute the least degree of any kernel element. If $S/J$ has an isolated singularity, we are also able to give an effective bound on $p$ ensuring the Frobenius action on $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in all negative degr…
We introduce a family of standard bigraded binomial Artinian Gorenstein algebras, whose combinatoric structure characterizes the ones presented by quadrics. These algebras provide, for all socle degree grater than two and in sufficiently large codimension with respect to the socle degree, counter-examples to Migliore-Nagel conjectures, see \cite{MN1} and \cite{MN2}. One of them predicted that Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadratics should satisfy the weak Lefschetz property. We also prove a generalization of a Hessian criterion for the Lefschetz properties given by Watanabe, see \…
Let $F$ be a homogeneous polynomial in $n$ variables of degree $d$ over a field $K$. Let $A(F)$ be the associated Artinian graded $K$-algebra. If $B \subset A(F)$ is a subalgebra of $A(F)$ which is Gorenstein with the same socle degree as $A(F)$, we describe the Macaulay dual generator for $B$ in terms of $F$. Furthermore when $n=d$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the polynomial $F$ for $A(F)$ to be a complete intersection.
Let R be a local ring of prime characteristic. We study the ring of Frobenius operators F(E), where E is the injective hull of the residue field of R. In particular, we examine the finite generation of F(E) over its degree zero component, and show that F(E) need not be finitely generated when R is a determinantal ring; nonetheless, we obtain concrete descriptions of F(E) in good generality that we use, for example, to prove the discreteness of F-jumping numbers for arbitrary ideals in determinantal rings.
In this note we show that the restriction of the cotangent bundle $Ω_{\mathbb P}^2$ of the projective plane to a Fermat curve $C$ of degree $d$ in characteristic $p \equiv -1 \mod 2d$ is, up to tensoration with a certain line bundle, isomorphic to its Frobenius pull-back. This leads to a Frobenius periodicity $F^*({\mathcal E}) \cong {\mathcal E} $ on the Fermat curve of degree 2d, where ${\mathcal E}= {\rm Syz}(U^2,V^2,W^2)(3)$.
We use geometric and cohomological methods to show that given a degree bound for membership in ideals of a fixed degree type in the polynomial ring P=k[x_0,..., x_d], one obtains a good generic degree bound for membership in the tight closure of an ideal of that degree type in any standard-graded k-algebra R of dimension d+1. This indicates that the tight closure of an ideal behaves more uniformly than the ideal itself. Moreover, if R is normal, one obtains a generic bound for membership in the Frobenius closure. If d is at most 2, then the bound for ideal membership in P can be computed from …
It is an open question whether tight closure commutes with localization in quotients of a polynomial ring in finitely many variables over a field. Katzman showed that tight closure of ideals in these rings commutes with localization at one element if for all ideals I and J in a polynomial ring there is a linear upper bound in q on the degree in the least variable of reduced Groebner bases in reverse lexicographic ordering of the ideals of the form J + I^{[q]}. Katzman conjectured that this property would always be satisfied. In this paper we prove several cases of Katzman's conjecture. We also…
Let I denote an R_+ -primary homogeneous ideal in a normal standard-graded Cohen-Macaulay domain over a field of positive characteristic p. We give a linear degree bound for the Frobenius powers I^[q] of I, q=p^e, in terms of the minimal slope of the top-dimensional syzygy bundle on the projective variety Proj R. This provides an inclusion bound for tight closure. In the same manner we give a linear bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Frobenius powers I^[q].
Let $k$ be a field. For each pair of positive integers $(n,N)$, we resolve $Q=R/(x^N,y^N,z^N)$ as a module over the ring $R=k[x,y,z]/(x^n+y^n+z^n)$. Write $N$ in the form $N=a n+r$ for integers $a$ and $r$, with $r$ between $0$ and $n-1$. If $n$ does not divide $N$ and the characteristic of $k$ is fixed, then the value of $a$ determines whether $Q$ has finite or infinite projective dimension. If $Q$ has infinite projective dimension, then value of $r$, together with the parity of $a$, determines the periodic part of the infinite resolution. When $Q$ has infinite projective dimension we give an…
I provide a construction of intrinsic weakly Ulrich bundles of large rank on any smooth complete surface in ${\bf P}^3$ over fields of characteristic $p>0$ and also for some classes of surfaces of general type in ${\bf P}^n$. I also construct intrinsic weakly Ulrich bundles on any Frobenius split variety of dimension at most three. The bundles constructed here are in fact ACM and weakly Ulrich bundles and so I call them almost Ulrich bundles. Frobenius split varieties in dimension three include as special cases: (1) smooth hypersurfaces in ${\bf P}^4$ of degree at most four, (2) Frobenius spli…
Let $R$ be the power series ring or the polynomial ring over a field $k$ and let $I $ be an ideal of $R.$ Macaulay proved that the Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras $R/I$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the cyclic $R$-submodules of the divided power series ring $Γ. $ The result is effective in the sense that any polynomial of degree $s$ produces an Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebra of socle degree $s.$ In a recent paper, the authors extended Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the $R$-submodules of $Γ$ in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional $k$-algebras. However, th…
