Let I be an m-primary ideal of a Noetherian local ring (R,m). We consider the Gorenstein and complete intersection properties of the associated graded ring G(I) and the fiber cone F(I) of I as reflected in their defining ideals as homomorphic images of polynomial rings over R/I and R/m respectively. In case all the higher conormal modules of I are free over R/I, we observe that: (i) G(I) is Cohen-Macaulay iff F(I) is Cohen- Macaulay, (ii) G(I) is Gorenstein iff both F(I) and R/I are Gorenstein, and (iii) G(I) is a relative complete intersection iff F(I) is a relative complete intersection. In case R/I is Gorenstein, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for G(I) to be Gorenstein in terms of residuation of powers of I with respect to a reduction J of I with μ(J) = dim R and the reduction number r of I with respect to J. We prove that G(I) is Gorenstein iff J:I^{r-i} = J + I^{i+1}, for i = 0, ...,r-1. If (R,m) is a Gorenstein local ring and I \subseteq m is an ideal having a reduction J with reduction number r such that μ(J) = ht(I) = g > 0, we prove that the extended Rees algebra R[It, t^-1}] is quasi-Gorenstein with \a-invariant a if and only if J^n:I^r = I^{n+a-r+g-1} for every integer n.
There are nice relations between graded homological dimensions and ordinary homological dimensions. We study the Gorenstein injective dimension of a complex of graded modules denoted by $^*\Gid$, and derive its properties. In particular we prove the Chouinard's like formula for $^*\Gid$, and compare it with the usual Gorenstein injective dimension.
In this paper we show a partial answer the a question of C. Huneke and G. Leuschke (2003): Let R be a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type, and assume that R has an isolated singularity. Is R then necessarily of graded finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type? In particular, this question has an affirmative answer for standard graded non-Gorenstein rings as well as for standard graded Gorenstein rings of minimal multiplicity. Along the way, we obtain a partial classification of graded Cohen-Macaulay rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay…
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
We introduce the cohomological blow up of a graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra along a surjective map, which we term BUG (Blow Up Gorenstein) for short. This is intended to translate to an algebraic context the cohomology ring of a blow up of a projective manifold along a projective submanifold. We show, among other things, that a BUG is a connected sum, that it is the general fiber in a flat family of algebras, and that it preserves the strong Lefschetz property. We also show that standard graded compressed algebras are rarely BUGs, and we classify those BUGs that are complete intersecti…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ an $R$-ideal. It is well-known that if the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein), then so is $R$, but the converse is not true in general. In this paper we investigate the Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteinness of the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ under the hypothesis of the extended Rees algebra $R[It,t^{-1}]$ is quasi-Gorenstein or the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is a domain.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $M= \bigoplus_n M_n$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, minimally generated by homogeneous elements of degree zero with a graded $R$-minimal free resolution $\mathbf{F}$. A Cohen-Macaulay module $M$ is Gorenstein when the graded resolution is symmetric. We give an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient, $e_1$ in terms of the shifts in the graded resolution of $M$. When $M = R/I$, a Gorenstein algebra, this bound agrees with the bound obtained in \cite{ES} in Gorenstein algebras with quasi-pure resolution. We conjecture a similar bound f…
In 2012, Ananthnarayan, Avramov and Moore gave a new construction of Gorenstein rings from two Gorenstein local rings, called their connected sum. In this article, we investigate conditions on the associated graded ring of a Gorenstein Artin local ring Q, which force it to be a connected sum over its residue field. In particular, we recover some results regarding short, and stretched, Gorenstein Artin rings. Finally, using these decompositions, we obtain results about the rationality of the Poincare series of Q.
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
In this paper we investigate the question of when the determinantal ring $R$ over a field $k$ is an almost Gorenstein local/graded ring in the sense of Goto, Takahashi, and the author. As a consequence of the main result, we see that if $R$ is a non-Gorenstein almost Gorenstein local/graded ring, then the ring $R$ has a minimal multiplicity.
The question of when the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring is explored, where $R$ is a two-dimensional regular local ring and $I$ a contracted ideal of $R$. It is known that ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring for every integrally closed ideal $I$ of $R$. The main results of the present paper show that if $I$ is a contracted ideal with $\mathrm{o}(I) \le 2$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, while if $\mathrm{o}(I) \ge 3$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is not necessarily an almost Gorenstei…
The Multiplicity Conjecture is a deep problem relating the multiplicity (or degree) of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded algebra with certain extremal graded Betti numbers in its minimal free resolution. In the case of level algebras of codimension three, Zanello has proposed a stronger conjecture. We prove this conjecture for the case of codimension three graded Gorenstein algebras.
For a commutative ring $R$, the $F$-signature was defined by Huneke and Leuschke \cite{H-L}. It is an invariant that measures the order of the rank of the free direct summand of $R^{(e)}$. Here, $R^{(e)}$ is $R$ itself, regarded as an $R$-module through $e$-times Frobenius action $F^e$.In this paper, we show a connection of the F-signature of a graded ring with other invariants. More precisely, for a graded $F$-finite Gorenstein ring $R$ of dimension $d$, we give an inequality among the $F$-signature $s(R)$, $a$-invariant $a(R)$ and Poincaré polynomial $P(R,t)$. \[ s(R)\le\frac{(-a(R))^d}{2^{d…
The Goto number of a parameter ideal Q in a Noetherian local ring (R,m) is the largest integer q such that Q : m^q is integral over Q. The Goto numbers of the monomial parameter ideals of R = k[[x^{a_1}, x^{a_2},..., x_{a_ν}]] are characterized using the semigroup of R. This helps in computing them for classes of numerical semigroup rings, as well as on a case-by-case basis. The minimal Goto number of R and its connection to other invariants is explored. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the associated graded rings of R and R/x^{a_1}R to be Gorenstein are also given, again using the semi…
Let A be a standard graded Artinian algebra over a field of characteristic zero and let z be a linear form in A. We define the central simple modules for each such pair (A, z). Assume that A is Gorenstein. Then we prove that A has the strong Lefschetz property if and only if there exists a linear form z in A such that all central simple modules of the pair (A,z) have the strong Lefschetz property. In the course of proof we need to extend the definition of the strong Lefschetz property to finite graded modules over graded Artinian algebra, which previously was defined only for standard graded A…
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
We study the general Jordan type of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras, it is a finer invariant than Weak and Strong Lefschetz properties for those algebras. We prove that their Jordan types are determined by the rank of certain Mixed Hessians. We give a description of the possible Jordan types for algebras of low socle degree and low codimension.
We describe the graded characters and Hilbert functions of certain graded artinian Gorenstein quotients of the polynomial ring which are also representations of the symmetric group. Specifically, we look at those algebras whose socles are trivial representations and whose principal apolar submodules are generated by the sum of the orbit of a power of a linear form.
We define what it means for a Cohen-Macaulay ring to to be super-stretched and show that Cohen-Macaulay rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type are super-stretched. We use this result to show that rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type, and positive dimension, have possible h-vectors (1), (1,n), or (1,n,1). Further, one dimensional standard graded Gorenstein rings of graded countable type are shown to be hypersurfaces; this result is not known in higher dimensions. In the non-Gorenstein case, rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type of dimension larger than 2 are shown to be …
The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl, giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.
We construct a complex of free-modules over a Gorenstein ring R of dimension five, for which the Euler characteristic and Dutta multiplicity are different. This complex is the resolution of an R-module of finite length and finite projective dimension. As a consequence, the ring R has a nonzero Todd class tau_3(R) and a bounded free complex whose local Chern character does not vanish on this class. In the course of our work, we construct a module N of finite length and finite projective dimension over the hypersurface A=K[u,v,w,x,y,z]/(ux+vy+wz), such that the Serre intersection multiplicity of…
Let R be a graded ring and n > 1 an integer. In this paper, We introduce the notions of Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules by using of special finitely presented graded modules . Then, some properties of Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules are obtained. On n-gr-coherent rings, we investigate the relationships among Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules and also, we prove that any graded module in R-gr (resp. gr-R) admits an Ding n-gr-injective (resp. Ding n-gr-flat) cover and preenvelope.
We deal with the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) for Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebras of codimension $3.$ We prove that many Gorenstein sequences force the WLP for such algebras. Moreover for every Gorenstein sequence $H$ of codimension 3 we found several Gorenstein Betti sequences compatible with $H$ which again force the WLP. Finally we show that for every Gorenstein Betti sequence the general Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebra with such Betti sequence has the WLP.
A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus provid…
In 1983 Kustin and Miller introduced a construction of Gorenstein ideals in local Gorenstein rings, starting from smaller such ideals. We review and modify their construction in the case of graded rings and discuss it within the framework of Gorenstein liaison theory. We determine invariants of the constructed ideal. Concerning the problem of when a given Gorenstein ideal can be obtained by the construction, we derive a necessary condition and exhibit a Gorenstein ideal that can not be obtained using the construction.
There is given a characterization for the Rees algebras of parameters in a Gorenstein local ring to be almost Gorenstein graded rings. A characterization is also given for the Rees algebras of socle ideals of parameters. The latter one shows almost Gorenstein Rees algebras rather rarely exist for socle ideals, if the dimension of the base local ring is greater than two.
Let $P$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $F$ be a self-dual acyclic complex of finitely generated free $P$-modules. Assume that $F$ has length four and $F_0$ has rank one. We prove that $F$ can be given the structure of a Differential Graded Algebra with Divided Powers; furthermore, the multiplication on $F$ exhibits Poincaré duality. This result is already known if $P$ is a local Gorenstein ring and $F$ is a minimal resolution. The purpose of the present paper is to remove the unnecessary hypotheses that $P$ is local, $P$ is Gorenstein, and $F$ is minimal.
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field. In this note, we show that if a sequence of relatively prime positive integers ${\bf a}=(a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4)$ defines a Gorenstein non complete intersection monomial curve ${\mathcal C}({\bf a})$ in ${\mathbb A}_k^4$, then there exist two vectors ${\bf u}$ and ${\bf v}$ such that ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf u})$ and ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf v})$ are also Gorenstein non complete intersection affine monomial curves for almost all $t\geq 0$.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
We prove in particular that the Gorenstein numerical semigroup ring generated by (36,48,50,52,56,60,66,67,107,121,129,135) has a transcendental series of Betti numbers. The methods of proofs are the theory of Golod homomorphism and the theory of infinite positively graded Lie algebras. This paper is more than twice as long as earlier 1212.0720, has two extra authors and has new general results about decomposition of graded Lie algebras (theorems 2,3 and 4) in the new section 4.
In this paper, for the development of the study of almost Gorenstein graded rings, we discuss some relations between almost Gorensteinness of Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous rings and their $h$-vectors. Concretely, for a Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous ring $R$, we give a sufficient condition for $R$ to be almost Gorenstein in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$ and we also characterize almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains with small socle degrees in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$. Moreover, we also provide the examples of almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains arising from lattice polytopes.
Levelness and nearly Gorensteinness are well-studied properties of graded rings as a generalized notion of Gorensteinness. In this paper, we compare the strength of these properties. For any Cohen-Macaulay homogeneous affine semigroup ring R, we give a necessary condition for R to be non-Gorenstein and nearly Gorenstein in terms of the h-vector of R and we show that if R is nearly Gorenstein with Cohen-Macaulay type 2, then it is level. We also show that if Cohen-Macaulay type is more than 2, there are 2-dimensional counterexamples. Moreover, we characterize nearly Gorensteinness of Stanley-Re…
We study properties of the resolution of almost Gorenstein artinian algebras $R/I,$ i.e. algebras defined by ideals $I$ such that $I=J+(f),$ with $J$ Gorenstein ideal and $f\in R.$ Such algebras generalize the well known almost complete intersection artinian algebras. Then we give a new explicit description of the resolution and of the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection ideals of codimension $3$ and we characterize the ideals whose graded Betti numbers can be achieved using artinian monomial ideals.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$. Using the method of idealization, we show that there is a non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein, standard graded $k$-algebra of regularity $3$ and codimension $8$, answering a question of Mastroeni, Schenck, and Stillman. We also show that this example is minimal in the sense that no other idealization that is non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebra, with regularity $3$ has smaller codimension. We also construct an infinite family of graded, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebras $A_m$, indexed by an integer $m \ge 2$, with the foll…
We study Gorenstein ideals of codimension $4$ derived from generic doublings of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$. We also investigate spinor coordinates of such Gorenstein ideals with $8$ and $9$ generators. For an ideal $J$ of commutative ring $R$, the $R/J$ module $J/J^2$ is called conormal module and $R/J$-dual of $J/J^2$ is called normal module. We study properties of conormal and normal modules of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$.
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
It is well-known that for a large class of local rings of positive characteristic, including complete intersection rings, the Frobenius endomorphism can be used as a test for finite projective dimension. In this paper, we exploit this property to study the structure of such rings. One of our results states that the Picard group of the punctured spectrum of such a ring $R$ cannot have $p$-torsion. When $R$ is a local complete intersection, this recovers (with a purely local algebra proof) an analogous statement for complete intersections in projective spaces first given in SGA and also a specia…
A central question in liaison theory asks whether every Cohen-Macaulay, graded ideal of a standard graded K-algebra belongs to the same G-liaison class of a complete intersection. In this paper we answer this question positively for toric ideals defining edge subrings of bipartite graphs.
Let Q be a regular local ring of dimension 3. We show how to trim a Gorenstein ideal in Q to obtain an ideal that defines a quotient ring that is close to Gorenstein in the sense that its Koszul homology algebra is a Poincare duality algebra P padded with a non-zero graded vector space on which P_{\ge 1} acts trivially. We explicitly construct an infinite family of such rings.
