A differential module is a module equipped with a square-zero endomorphism. This structure underpins complexes of modules over rings, as well as differential graded modules over graded rings. We establish lower bounds on the class--a substitute for the length of a free complex--and on the rank of a differential module in terms of invariants of its homology. These results specialize to basic theorems in commutative algebra and algebraic topology. One instance is a common generalization of the equicharacteristic case of the New Intersection Theorem of Hochster, Peskine, P. Roberts, and Szpiro, concerning complexes over noetherian commutative rings, and of a theorem of G. Carlsson on differential graded modules over graded polynomial rings.
We develop a notion of (principal) differential rank for differential-valued fields, in analog of the exponential rank and of the difference rank. We give several characterizations of this rank. We then give a method to define a derivation on a field of generalized power series and use this method to show that any totally ordered set can be realized as the principal differential rank of a H-field.
A $\mathbb{Z}^d$-graded differential $R$-module is a $\mathbb{Z}^d$-graded $R$-module $D$ equipped with an endomorphism, $δ$, that squares to zero. For $R=k[x_1,\ldots,x_d]$, this paper establishes a lower bound on the rank of such a differential module when the underlying R-module is free. We define the Betti number of a differential module and use it to show that when the homology $H(D)=\mathrm{ker}(δ)/\mathrm{im}(δ)$ of $D$ is non-zero and finite dimensional over $k$ then there is an inequality $\mathrm{rank}_R D \geqslant 2^d$.
In this paper, we construct indecomposable integrally closed modules of arbitrary rank over a two-dimensional regular local ring. The modules are quite explicitly constructed from a given complete monomial ideal. We also give structural and numerical results on integrally closed modules. These are used in the proof of indecomposability of the modules. As a consequence, we have a large class of indecomposable integrally closed modules of arbitrary rank whose ideal is not necessarily simple. This extends the original result on the existence of indecomposable integrally closed modules and strengt…
It is proven that each indecomposable injective module over a valuation domain $R$ is polyserial if and only if each maximal immediate extension $\widehat{R}$ of $R$ is of finite rank over the completion $\widetilde{R}$ of $R$ in the $R$-topology. In this case, for each indecomposable injective module $E$, the following invariants are finite and equal: its Malcev rank, its Fleischer rank and its dual Goldie dimension. Similar results are obtained for chain rings satisfying some additional properties. It is also shown that each indecomposable injective module over one Krull-dimensional local No…
Differential modules are natural generalizations of complexes. In this paper, we study differential modules with complete intersection homology, comparing and contrasting the theory of these differential modules with that of the Koszul complex. We construct a Koszul differential module that directly generalizes the classical Koszul complex and investigate which properties of the Koszul complex can be generalized to this setting.
Let R be a local ring of dimension d. Buchweitz asks if the rank of the d-th syzygy of a module of finite lengh is greater than or equal to the rank of the d-th syzygy of the residue field, unless the module has finite projective dimension. Assuming that R is Gorenstein, we prove that if the question is affrmative, then R is a hypersurface. If moreover R has dimension two, then we show that the converse also holds true.
Differential modules over a commutative differential ring R which are finitely generated projective as ring modules, with differential homomorphisms, form an additive category, so their isomorphism classes form a monoid. We study the quotient monoid of this monoid by the submonoid of isomorphism classes of free modules with component wise derivation. This quotient monoid has the reduced K group of R (ignoring the derivation) as an image and contains the reduced K group of the constants of R as its subgroup of units. This monoid provides a description of the isomorphism classes of differential …
The structure of Sally modules of $\fkm$-primary ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A, \m)$ satisfying the equality $\e_1(I)=\e_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+1$ is explored, where $\e_0(I)$ and $\e_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I$.
In this paper, we explore the structure of the normal Sally modules of rank one with respect to an $m$-primary ideal in a Nagata reduced local ring which is not necessary Cohen-Macaulay. As an application of this result, when the base ring is Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified, the extremal bound on the first normal Hilbert coefficient leads to the Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded rings with respect to a normal filtration.
In this work we describe the local cohomology of reflexive modules of rank one over normal semigroup rings with respect to monomial ideals. Using our description we show that the problem of classifying maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of rank one can be rephrased in terms of finding integral solutions to certain sets of linear inequalities.
We propose a notion of minimal free resolutions for differential modules, and we prove existence and uniqueness results for such resolutions. We also take the first steps toward studying the structure of minimal free resolutions of differential modules. Our main result in this direction explains a sense in which the minimal free resolution of a differential module is a deformation of the minimal free resolution of its homology; this leads to structural results that mirror classical theorems about minimal free resolutions of modules.
We characterize the $k$-torsion freeness of the module of differentials of order $n$ of a point of a hypersurface in terms of the singular locus of the corresponding local ring.
We give an explicit presentation of the module of differentials of order $n$ of a finitely generated algebra via a higher-order Jacobian matrix. We use the presentation to study some aspects of this module in the case of hypersurfaces. More precisely, we prove higher-order versions of known results relating freness and torsion-freness of the module of differentials with the regularity and normality of the hypersurface. We also study its projective dimension.
Let (R,m,k) be a one-dimensional analytically unramified local ring with minimal prime ideals P_1,...,P_s. Our ultimate goal is to study the direct-sum behavior of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over R. Such behavior is encoded by the monoid C(R) of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules: the structure of this monoid reveals, for example, whether or not every maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is uniquely a direct sum of indecomposable modules; when uniqueness does not hold, invariants of this monoid give a measure of how badly this property fails. The key to understanding the mono…
A complete structure theorem of Sally modules of $\fkm$-primary ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A, \m)$ satisfying the equality $\e_1(I)=\e_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+1$ is given, where $\e_0(I)$ and $\e_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I$.
Holm studied modules of higher order differential operators (generalising derivations) on generic (central) hyperplane arrangements. We use his results to determine the Hilbert series of these modules. We also give a conjecture about the Poincar{é}-Betti series; these are known for the module of derivations through the work of Yuzvinsky and of Rose and Terao.
Boij-Söderberg theory gives a combinatorial description of the set of Betti tables belonging to finite length modules over the polynomial ring $S = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. We posit that a similar combinatorial description can be given for analogous numerical invariants of graded differential $S$-modules, which are natural generalizations of chain complexes. We prove several results that lend evidence in support of this conjecture, including a categorical pairing between the derived categories of graded differential $S$-modules and coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ and a proof of the conject…
We study the cancellation property of projective modules of rank $2$ with a trivial determinant over Noetherian rings of dimension $\leq 4$. If $R$ is a smooth affine algebra of dimension $4$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ such that $6 \in k^{\times}$, then we prove that stably free $R$-modules of rank $2$ are free if and only if a Hermitian $K$-theory group $\tilde{V}_{SL} (R)$ is trivial.
In the article "Picard-Vessiot theory of differentially simple rings" we established a Picard-Vessiot theory over differentially simple rings which may not be fields. Differential modules over such rings were proven to be locally free but do not have to be free as modules. In this article, we give a family of examples of non-free differential modules, and compute Picard-Vessiot rings as well as Galois groups for them.
We show that a differential module is Gorenstein projective if and only if its underlying module is Gorenstein projective. Dually, a differential module is Gorenstein injective if and only if its underlying module is Gorenstein injective.
We study primary submodules and primary decompositions from a differential and computational point of view. Our main theoretical contribution is a general structure theory and a representation theorem for primary submodules of an arbitrary finitely generated module over a polynomial ring. We characterize primary submodules in terms of differential operators and punctual Quot schemes. Moreover, we introduce and implement an algorithm that computes a minimal differential primary decomposition for a module.
A commutative ring R has finite rank r, if each ideal of R is generated at most by r elements. A commutative ring R has the r-generator property, if each finitely generated ideal of R can be generated by r elements. Such rings are closely related to Prüfer domains. In the present paper we investigate some analogs of these concepts for modules over group rings.
In this paper, we construct some examples of commuting differential operators $L_1$ and $L_2$ with rational coefficients of rank 3 corresponding to a curve of genus 2.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, let $R$ be a commutative $k$-algebra, and let $M$ be a torsion free $R$-module of rank one with a connection $\nabla$. We consider the Lie-Rinehart cohomology with values in $End_{R}(M)$ with its induced connection, and give an interpretation of this cohomology in terms of the integrable connections on $M$. When $R$ is an isolated singularity of dimension $d\geq2$, we relate the Lie-Rinehart cohomology to the topological cohomology of the link of the singularity, and when $R$ is a quasi-homogenous hypersurface of dimension two, we g…
