The completion tower of a nonunital commutative ring is a classical construction in commutative algebra. In the setting of structured ring spectra as modeled by algebras over a spectral operad, the analogous construction is the homotopy completion tower. The purpose of this brief note is to show that localization with respect to the Johnson-Wilson spectrum $E(n)$ commutes with the terms of this tower.
This paper is based on talks I gave in Nagoya and Kinosaki in August of 2003. I survey, from my own perspective, Goodwillie's work on towers associated to continuous functors between topological model categories, and then include a discussion of applications to periodic homotopy as in my work and the work of Arone-Mahowald.
We carefully present an elementary proof of the well known theorem that each homotopy group (or, in degree zero, pointed set) of the inverse limit of a tower of fibrations maps naturally onto the inverse limit of the homotopy groups (or, in degree zero, pointed sets) of the spaces in the tower, with kernel naturally isomorphic to $\lim^{1}$ of the tower of homotopy groups of one dimension higher.
This mostly expository paper records some basic facts about towers of homotopy fiber sequences. We give a proof that a pairing of towers induces a pairing of associated spectral sequences, for towers of spaces and towers of spectra.
In this survey, we review how the global structure of the stable homotopy category gives rise to the chromatic filtration. We then discuss computational tools used in the study of local chromatic homotopy theory, leading up to recent developments in the field. Along the way, we illustrate the key methods and results with explicit examples.
We calculate the rational homotopy and the K(1)-local homotopy of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and level 2. We use this to verify the chromatic splitting conjecture in this case.
We call attention to the intermediate constructions $\T_n F$ in Goodwillie's Calculus of homotopy functors, giving a new model which naturally gives rise to a family of towers filtering the Taylor Tower of a functor. We also establish a surprising equivalence between the homotopy inverse limits of these towers and the homotopy inverse limits of certain cosimplicial resolutions. This equivalence gives a greatly simplified construction for the homotopy inverse limit of the Taylor tower of a functor $F$ under general assumptions.
We show that if $E$ is a $p$-local Landweber exact homology theory of height $n$ and $p > n^2+n+1$, then there exists an equivalence $h \mathcal{S}p_{E} \simeq h\mathcal{D}(E_{*}E)$ between homotopy categories of $E$-local spectra and differential $E_{*}E$-comodules, generalizing Bousfield's and Franke's results to heights $n > 1$.
Goodwillie's homotopy functor calculus constructs a Taylor tower of approximations to F, often a functor from spaces to spaces. Weiss's orthogonal calculus provides a Taylor tower for functors from vector spaces to spaces. In particular, there is a Weiss tower associated to the functor which sends a vector space V to F evaluated at the one-point compactification of V. In this paper, we give a comparison of these two towers and show that when F is analytic the towers agree up to weak equivalence. We include two main applications, one of which gives as a corollary the convergence of the Weiss Ta…
We describe Bott towers as sequences of toric manifolds M^k, and identify the omniorientations which correspond to their original construction as toric varieties. We show that the suspension of M^k is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of Thom complexes, and display its complex K-theory as an algebra over the coefficient ring. We extend the results to KO-theory for several families of examples, and compute the effects of the realification homomorphism; these calculations breathe geometric life into Bahri and Bendersky's recent analysis of the Adams Spectral Sequence. By way of application we inves…
In this note, we construct a general form of the chromatic fracture cube, using a convenient characterization of the total homotopy fiber, and deduce a decomposition of the E(n)-local stable homotopy category.
This is a (slightly edited) version of the PhD dissertation of the author, submitted to Brown University in July 2005. We construct a homotopy calculus of functors in the sense of Goodwillie for the categories of rational homotopy theory. More precisely, given a homotopy functor between any of the categories of differential graded vector spaces (DG), reduced differential graded vector spaces, differential graded Lie algebras (DGL), and differential graded coalgebras (DGC), we show that there is an associated approximating "rational Taylor tower" of excisive functors. The fibers in this tower a…
We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this $P^1$-stable homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for $P^1$-spectra. We also show that the 0th…
We study the limit of the chromatic tower for not necessarily finite spectra, obtaining a generalization of the chromatic convergence theorem of Hopkins and Ravenel. Moreover, we prove that in general this limit does not coincide with harmonic localization, thereby answering a question of Ravenel's.
In this paper, we study the global structure of an algebraic avatar of the derived category of ind-coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of formal groups. In analogy with the stable homotopy category, we prove a version of the nilpotence theorem as well as the chromatic convergence theorem, and construct a generalized chromatic spectral sequence. Furthermore, we discuss analogs of the telescope conjecture and chromatic splitting conjecture in this setting, using the local duality techniques established earlier in joint work with Valenzuela.
We introduce general methods to analyse the Goodwillie tower of the identity functor on a wedge $X \vee Y$ of spaces (using the Hilton-Milnor theorem) and on the cofibre $\mathrm{cof}(f)$ of a map $f: X \rightarrow Y$. We deduce some consequences for $v_n$-periodic homotopy groups: whereas the Goodwillie tower is finite and converges in periodic homotopy when evaluated on spheres (Arone-Mahowald), we show that neither of these statements remains true for wedges and Moore spaces.
Inspired by the Ax--Kochen isomorphism theorem, we develop a notion of categorical ultraproducts to capture the generic behavior of an infinite collection of mathematical objects. We employ this theory to give an asymptotic solution to the approximation problem in chromatic homotopy theory. More precisely, we show that the ultraproduct of the $E(n,p)$-local categories over any non-prinicipal ultrafilter on the set of prime numbers is equivalent to the ultraproduct of certain algebraic categories introduced by Franke. This shows that chromatic homotopy theory at a fixed height is asymptotically…
We study a certain monoid of endofunctors of the stable homotopy category that includes localizations with respect to finite unions of Morava $K$-theories. We work in an axiomatic framework that can also be applied to analogous questions in equivariant stable homotopy theory. Our results should be helpful for the study of transchromatic phenomena, including the Chromatic Splitting Conjecture. The combinatorial parts of this work have been formalised in the Lean proof assistant.
In this note, we give a brief overview of the telescope conjecture and the chromatic splitting conjecture in stable homotopy theory. In particular, we provide a proof of the folklore result that Ravenel's telescope conjecture for all heights combined is equivalent to the generalized telescope conjecture for the stable homotopy category, and explain some similarities with modular representation theory.
Ravenel proved the remarkable fact that the $K$-theoretic localization $L_K S^0$ of the sphere spectrum has $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ as homotopy group in dimension -2. Mike Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture implies more generally that there are $3^{n-1}$ copies of $(\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})_p$ in the homotopy groups of the $E(n)$-localization of $S^0$; but where these copies occur can be confusing. We try here to simplify this book-keeping.
Manifold calculus is a form of functor calculus concerned with functors from some category of manifolds to spaces. A weakness in the original formulation is that it is not continuous in the sense that it does not handle well the natural enrichments. In this paper, we correct this by defining an enriched version of manifold calculus which essentially extends the discrete setting. Along the way, we recast the Taylor tower as a tower of homotopy sheafifications. As a spin-off we obtain a natural connection to operads: the limit of the Taylor tower is a certain (derived) space of right module maps…
In this note we compare the fracture squares from genuine equivariant stable homotopy theory and the fracture squares which appear in the Goodwillie tower for the norm functor.
In this note we study the functoriality of the coniveau filtration in motivic homotopy theory via a moving lemma over a base scheme, extending previous works of Levine and Bachmann-Yakerson. The main result is that the motivic stable homotopy category can be modeled on a smaller site, the "smooth-smooth site". The proof is based on a new approach to the purity theorem of Morel-Voevodsky using specialization maps, which turns out to hold even in absence of the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance property. Applications to the homotopy coniveau tower and to higher Chow-Witt groups are given.
This paper begins with an exposition of the author's research on the category of BP_*BP-comodules, much of which is joint with Neil Strickland. The main result of that work is that the category of E(n)_*E(n)-comodules is equivalent to a localization of the category of BP_*BP-comodules (the localization is L_n, analogous to the topological L_n). The main new result in this paper is that, analogously, the stable homotopy category of E(n)_*E(n)-comodules is equivalent to a localization (the finite localization L_n^f this time, not L_n) of the stable homotopy category of BP_*BP-comodules. These st…
Given a left Quillen presheaf of localized model structures, we study the homotopy limit model structure on the associated category of sections. We focus specifically on towers and fibered products (pullbacks) of model categories. As applications we consider Postnikov towers of model categories, chromatic towers of spectra and Bousfield arithmetic squares of spectra. For stable model categories, we show that the homotopy fiber of a stable left Bousfield localization is a stable right Bousfield localization.
We study the connection between the Goodwillie tower of the identity and the lower central series of the loop group on connected spaces. We define the simplicial theory of homotopy n-nilpotent groups. This notion interpolates between infinite loop spaces and loop spaces. We prove that the set-valued algebraic theory obtained by applying $π_0$ is the theory of ordinary n-nilpotent groups and that the Goodwillie tower of a connected space is determined by a certain homotopy left Kan extension. We prove that n-excisive functors of the form $ΩF$ have values in homotopy n-nilpotent groups.
As a consequence of the algebraicity of chromatic homotopy at large primes, we show that the Hopkins' Picard group of the $K(n)$-local category coincides with the algebraic one when $2p-2 > n^{2}+n$.
A generalised Postnikov tower for a space $X$ is a tower of principal fibrations with fibres generalised Eilenberg-MacLane spaces, whose inverse limit is weakly homotopy equivalent to $X$. In this paper we give a characterisation of a polyhedral product $Z_K(X,A)$ whose universal cover either admits a generalised Postnikov tower of finite length, or is a homotopy retract of a space admitting such a tower. We also include $p$-local and rational versions of the theorem. We end with a group theoretic application.
The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tow…
We extend the theory of ambidexterity developed by M. J. Hopkins and J. Lurie and show that the $\infty$-categories of $T(n)$-local spectra are $\infty$-semiadditive for all $n$, where $T(n)$ is the telescope on a $v_{n}$-self map of a type $n$ spectrum. This extends and provides a new proof for the analogous result of Hopkins-Lurie on $K(n)$-local spectra. Moreover, we show that $K(n)$-local and $T(n)$-local spectra are respectively, the minimal and maximal $1$-semiadditive localizations of spectra with respect to a homotopy ring, and that all such localizations are in fact $\infty$-semiaddit…
The classical problem of algebraic models for homotopy types is precisely stated, to our knowledge for the first time. Two different natural statements for this problem are produced, the simplest one being entirely solved by the notion of SSEH-structure, due to the authors. Other tentative solutions, Postnikov towers and E_\infty-chain complexes, are considered and compared with the SSEH-structures. In particular, which looks at least like an unfortunate imprecision in the usual definition of the k-``invariants'' is explained, which implies we seem far from a solution for the ideal statement o…
The relation between Eisenstein series and the $J$-homomorphism is an important topic in chromatic homotopy theory at height $1$. Both sides are related to the special values of the Riemann $ζ$-function. Number theorists have studied the twistings of the Riemann $ζ$-functions and Eisenstein series by Dirichlet characters. Motivated by the Dirichlet equivariance of these Eisenstein series, we introduce the Dirichlet $J$-spectra in this paper. The homotopy groups of the Dirichlet $J$-spectra are related to the special values of the Dirichlet $L$-functions. Moreover, we find Brown-Comenetz duals …
We give a short and much simplified proof of the main theorem of the recent study, by T. Barthel, M. Hausmann, N. Naumann, T. Nikolaus, J. Noel, and N. Stapleton, of the Balmer spectrum for A-equivariant stable homotopy when A is a finite abelian p-group. This theorem says that if A is a finite abelian p-group of rank r, and X is a finite A-space that is acyclic in the (n+r)th Morava K-theory, then its space of fixed points, X^A, will be acyclic in the nth Morava K-theory. It is a chromatic homotopy version of P. A. Smith's classic theorem about the mod p homology of the fixed points of a fini…
This work continues the study of a homotopy-theoretic construction of the author inspired by the Bott-Taubes integrals. Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots. Their techniques were later used by Cattaneo et al. to construct real "Vassiliev-type" cohomology classes in spaces of knots in higher-dimensional Euclidean space. By doing this integration via a Pontrjagin-Thom construction, we constructed cohomology classes in the knot space with arbitrary coefficients. We later showed that a refinement of this …
Given an algebraic stack $X$, one may compare the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on $X$ with the category of dg-modules over the dg-ring of functions on $X$. We study the analogous question in stable homotopy theory, for derived stacks that arise via realizations of diagrams of Landweber-exact homology theories. We identify a condition (quasi-affineness of the map to the moduli stack of formal groups) under which the two categories are equivalent, and study applications to topological modular forms. In particular, we provide new examples of Galois extensions of ring spectra and van…
We construct a Goodwillie tower of categories which interpolates between the category of pointed spaces and the category of spectra. This tower of categories refines the Goodwillie tower of the identity functor in a precise sense. More generally, we construct such a tower for a large class of infinity-categories C. We classify such Goodwillie towers in terms of the derivatives of the identity functor of C. As a particular application we show how this provides a model for the homotopy theory of simply-connected spaces in terms of coalgebras with Tate diagonals. Our classification of Goodwillie …
We study the triangulated subcategories of compact objects in stable homotopy categories such as the homotopy category of spectra, the derived categories of rings, and the stable module categories of Hopf algebras. In the first part of this thesis we use a K-theory recipe of Thomason to classify these subcategories. This recipe when applied to the category of finite p-local spectra gives a refinement of the ``chromatic tower''. This refinement has some interesting consequences. In particular, it gives new evidence to a conjecture of Frank Adams that the thick subcategory C_2 can be generated b…
We consider Voevodsky's slice tower for a finite spectrum E in the motivic stable homotopy category over a perfect field k. In case k has finite cohomological dimension (in characteristic two, we also require that k is infinite), we show that the slice tower converges, in that the induced filtration on the bi-graded homotopy sheaves for each term in the tower for E is finite, exhaustive and separated at each stalk. This partially verifies a conjecture of Voevodsky.
In the early 1980's the author proved G.W. Whitehead's conjecture about stable homotopy groups and symmetric products. In the mid 1990's, Arone and Mahowald showed that the Goodwillie tower of the identity had remarkably good properties when specialized to odd dimensional spheres. In this paper we prove that these results are linked, as has been long suspected. We give a state-of-the-art proof of the Whitehead conjecture valid for all primes, and simultaneously show that the identity tower specialized to the circle collapses in the expected sense. Key to our work is that Steenrod algebra modul…
The Morava stabilizer groups play a dominating role in chromatic stable ho-motopy theory. In fact, for suitable spectra X, for example all finite spectra, thechromatic homotopy type of X at chromatic level n \textgreater{} 0 and a given prime p islargely controlled by the continuous cohomology of a certain p-adic Lie group Gn,in stable homotopy theory known under the name of Morava stabilizer group oflevel n at p, with coefficients in the corresponding Morava module (En)$\star$X.
The mapping spaces of the $r$-truncated versions of the $E_n$ operads appear as the $r$-th stage of the Taylor tower for long embedding spaces. It has been shown that their rational homotopy groups can be expressed through graph homology in the limit $r\to \infty$. For finite $r$ only a part of the graph homology appears in the homotopy groups of the Taylor tower at this stage, possibly along with some additional unstable homotopy groups. In this paper we study the convergence properties in some more detail. In particular, we provide bounds for the stage $r$ at which the various graph homology…
The primary goal of this paper is to study Spanier-Whitehead duality in the $K(n)$-local category. One of the key players in the $K(n)$-local category is the Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$, whose homotopy groups classify deformations of a formal group law of height $n$, in the implicit characteristic $p$. It is known that $E_n$ is self-dual up to a shift; however, that does not fully take into account the action of the Morava stabilizer group $\mathbb{G}_n$, or even its subgroup of automorphisms of the formal group in question. In this paper we find that the $\mathbb{G}_n$-equivariant dual of $E_n$…
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
Box complex is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-space associated to a graph, and it is known that a certain $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homotopy invariant of it, called the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index, gives an effective lower bound for the chromatic number. On the other hand, we show that any $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homotopy invariant of the box complex is not equivalent to the chromatic number. Namely, we construct a graph homomorphism $f:X \rightarrow Y$ such that it gives rise to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homotopy equivalence between their box complexes, but $X$ and $Y$ have different chromatic numbers. To see this, we show that some deformat…
We consider a homotopy theory obtained from that of pointed spaces by inverting the maps inducing isomorphisms in $v_n$-periodic homotopy groups. The case n = 0 corresponds to rational homotopy theory. In analogy with Quillen's results in the rational case, we prove that this $v_n$-periodic homotopy theory is equivalent to the homotopy theory of Lie algebras in T(n)-local spectra. We also compare it to the homotopy theory of commutative coalgebras in T(n)-local spectra, where it turns out there is only an equivalence up to a certain convergence issue of the Goodwillie tower of the identity.
We show Goodwillie's calculus of functors and $n$-geometric $D^{-}$-stacks share similar features by starting to focus on the convergence of Taylor towers for homotopy functors and the fact that $\mathbb{R} F(A) \cong \text{holim} \mathbb{R} F(A_{\leq n})$ for geometric stacks, where $\{ A_{\leq n} \}$ provides a Postnikov tower of some given $A \in s \text{k-Alg}$. From there we show parallel results, such as similar homotopy fibers of connecting maps in towers, as well as polynomial approximations, pointwise approximations and reconstruction theorems for towers.
We import into homotopy theory the algebro-geometric construction of the cotangent space of a geometric point on a scheme. Specializing to the category of spectra local to a Morava $K$-theory of height $d$, we show that this can be used to produce a choice-free model of the determinantal sphere as well as an efficient Picard-graded cellular decomposition of $K(\mathbb Z_p, d+1)$. Coupling these ideas to work of Westerland, we give a "Snaith's theorem" for the Iwasawa extension of the $K(d)$-local sphere.
