We consider constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics on a smooth minimal model of general type in a neighborhood of the canonical class, which is the perturbation of the canonical class by a fixed Kähler metric. We show that sequences of such metrics converge smoothly on compact subsets away from a subvariety to the singular Kähler Einstein metric in the canonical class. This confirms partially a conjecture of Jian-Shi-Song about the convergence behavior of such sequences.
In this paper, we consider a CscK metric defined away from divisor and with metric upper bound and lower bound going to zero in certain rate. And we'll prove that this "nicely" behaved metric is a smooth CscK metric across the divisor.
Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$ it is interesting to ask whether it admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. In this short note we show that there always exist cscK metrics on compact Kähler manifolds with nef canonical bundle, thus on all smooth minimal models, and also on the blowup of any such manifold. This confirms an expectation of Jian-Shi-Song \cite{JianShiSong} and extends their main result from $K_X$ semi-ample to $K_X$ nef, with a direct proof that does not appeal to the Abundance conjecture. As a byproduct we obtain that the connected component $\mathrm{Aut}_0(X…
In this short note, we offer an observation that the Miyaoka-Yau inequality holds for any compact Kähler manifold with nef canonical bundle, i.e. a smooth minimal model. It follows directly from the existence of cscK metrics in a neighborhood of the canonical class which was confirmed both by the work of Dyrefelt and Song using different approaches.
In this paper, we generalize our apriori estimates on cscK(constant scalar curvature Kähler) metric equation to more general scalar curvature type equations (e.g., twisted cscK metric equation). As applications, under the assumption that the automorphism group is discrete, we prove the celebrated Donaldson's conjecture that the non-existence of cscK metric is equivalent to the existence of a destabilized geodesic ray where the $K$-energy is non-increasing. Moreover, we prove that the properness of $K$-energy in terms of $L^1$ geodesic distance $d_1$ in the space of Kähler potentials implies th…
We introduce a notion of a Kähler metric with constant weighted scalar curvature on a compact Kähler manifold $X$, depending on a fixed real torus $\mathbb{T}$ in the reduced group of automorphisms of $X$, and two smooth (weight) functions $\mathrm{v}>0$ and $\mathrm{w}$, defined on the momentum image (with respect to a given Kähler class $α$ on $X$) of $X$ in the dual Lie algebra of $\mathbb{T}$. A number of natural problems in Kähler geometry, such as the existence of extremal Kähler metrics and conformally Kähler, Einstein--Maxwell metrics, or prescribing the scalar curvature on a compact t…
This is the first in a series of two papers studying mu-cscK metrics and muK-stability, from a new perspective evoked from observations in arXiv:2004.06393 and in this first article. The first paper is about a characterization of mu-cscK metrics in terms of Perelman's W-entropy $\check{W}^λ$. We regard Perelman's W-entropy as a functional on the tangent bundle $T \mathcal{H} (X, L)$ of the space $\mathcal{H} (X, L)$ of K"ahler metrics in a given K"ahler class $L$. The critical points of $\check{W}^λ$ turn out to be $μ^λ$-cscK metrics. When $λ\le 0$, the supremum along the fibres gives a smooth…
In this paper we introduce two new systems of equations in Kähler geometry: The coupled p equation and the generalized coupled cscK equation. We motivate the equations from the moment map pictures, prove the uniqueness of solutions and find out the obstructions to the solutions for the second equation. We also point out the connections between the coupled cscK equation, the coupled Kähler Yang-Mills equations and the deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills equation. Moreover, using this moment map, we can show the Mabuchi functional for the generalized coupled cscK equation, and a special case of the co…
We prove that polarised manifolds that admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric satisfy a condition we call slope semistability. That is, we define the slope $μ$ for a projective manifold and for each of its subschemes, and show that if $X$ is cscK then $μ(Z)\leμ(X)$ for all subschemes $Z$. This gives many examples of manifolds with Kähler classes which do not admit cscK metrics, such as del Pezzo surfaces and projective bundles. If $\PP(E)\to B$ is a projective bundle which admits a cscK metric in a rational Kähler class with sufficiently small fibres, then $E$ is a slope semist…
Let $\hat{L}$ be the projective completion of an ample line bundle $L$ over $D$, a smooth projective manifold. Hwang-Singer \cite{HwangS} have constructed complete CSCK metric on $\hat{L}\backslash D$. When the corresponding \kahler form is in the cohomology class of a rational divisor $A$ and when $L$ has negative CSCK metric on $D$, we show that the Kodaira embedding induced by orthonormal basis of the Bergman space of $kA$ is almost balanced. As a corollary, $(\hat{L},D,cA,0)$ is K-semistable.
We prove that constant scalar curvature Kähler metric "adjacent" to a fixed Kähler class is unique up to isomorphism. This extends the uniqueness theorem of Donaldson and Chen-Tian, and formally fits into the infinite dimensional G.I.T picture described by Donaldson. We prove that the Calabi flow near a cscK metric exists globally and converges uniformly to a cscK metric in a polynomial rate. Viewed in a Kähler class, the Calabi flow is also shown to be asymptotic to a smooth geodesic ray at infinity. This latter fact is also interesting in the finite dimensional analogue, where we show that t…
We first give a precise statement on the short time existence of the Calabi flow and prove a stability result: any metric near a constant scalar curvature metric will flow to this cscK metric exponentially fast. Secondly, we prove that a compactness theorem in space of the kahler metrics given unifrom Ricci bound and potential bound. As an application, we prove the Calabi flow can be extended once Ricci curvature stays uniformly bounded. Lastly, we prove a removing-sigularity result about a weak constant scalar curveture metric in a punctured ball. One of the main difficulties is that the metr…
In this paper we study constant scalar curvature equation (CSCK), a nonlinear fourth order elliptic equation, and its weak solutions on Kähler manifolds. We first define a notion of weak solution of CSCK for an $L^\infty$ Kähler metric. The main result is to show that such a weak solution (with uniform $L^\infty$ bound) is smooth. As an application, this answers in part a conjecture of Chen regarding the regularity of $K$-energy minimizers. The new technical ingredient is a $W^{2, 2}$ regularity result for the Laplacian equation $Δ_g u=f$ on Kähler manifolds, where the metric has only $L^\inft…
We show that on a smooth Hermitian minimal model of general type the Chern-Ricci flow converges to a closed positive current on M. Moreover, the flow converges smoothly to a Kahler-Einstein metric on compact sets away from the null locus of K_M. This generalizes work of Tsuji and Tian-Zhang to Hermitian manifolds, providing further evidence that the Chern-Ricci flow is a natural generalization of the Kahler-Ricci flow.
We present a definable smooth version of the Thom transversality theorem. We show further that the set of non-transverse definable smooth maps is nowhere dense in the definable smooth topology. Finally, we prove a definable version of a theorem of Trotman which says that the Whitney $(a)$-regularity of a stratification is necessary and sufficient for the stability of transversality.
We consider smoothings of a complex surface with singularities of class T and no nontrivial holomorphic vector field. Under an hypothesis of non degeneracy of the smoothing at each singular point, we prove that if the singular surface admits an extremal metric, then the smoothings also admit extremal metrics in nearby Kähler classes. In addition, we construct small Lagrangian stationary spheres which represent Lagrangian vanishing cycles for surfaces close to the singular one.
In this paper we investigate H-minimal graphs of lower regularity. We show that noncharactersitic C^1 H-minimal graphs whose components of the unit horizontal Gauss map are in W^{1,1} are ruled surfaces with C^2 seed curves. In a different direction, we investigate ways in which patches of C^1 H-minimal graphs can be glued together to form continuous piecewise C^1 H-minimal surfaces. We apply these description of H-minimal graphs to the question of the existence of smooth solutions to the Dirichlet problem with smooth data. We find a necessary condition for the existence of smooth solutions an…
In this short note, exploits of constructions of $\mathcal{F}$-structures coupled with technology developed by Cheeger-Gromov and Paternain-Petean are seen to yield a procedure to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, Yamabe invariant and to study collapsing with bounded sectional curvature on inequivalent smooth structures and inequivalent PL-structures within a fixed homeomorphism class. We compute these fundamental Riemannian invariants for every high-dimensional smooth manifold on the homeomorphism class of any smooth manifold that admits a Riemannian metric of zero sectional curvature.…
In this paper we show that every area minimizing cone C^{n-1} in R^n can be approximated by entirely smooth area minimizing hypersurfaces. This extensively uses hyperbolic unfoldings of such hypersurfaces and the resulting potential theory for the Jacobi field operator. Applications include the splitting theorem in scalar curvature geometry saying that any (n-1)-dim. homology class of a compact manifold M^n with positive scalar curvature can be represented by a smooth (!) compact hypersurface that admits a positive scalar curvature metric.
Suppose that $N$ is a smooth manifold with a smooth Riemannian metric $g_0$, and that $Γ$ is a smooth submanifold of $N$. This paper proves that for a generic (in the sense of Baire category) smooth metric $g$ conformal to $g_0$, if $F$ is any simple $g$-minimal immersion of a closed manifold into N, then $F$ is transverse to $Γ$ and $F$ is self-transverse. The theorem remains true with "transverse" and "self-transverse" replaced by "strongly transverse" and "strongly self-transverse". The theorem also holds for hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature or, more generally, of prescribed mean cu…
Consider a domain D in R^3 which is convex (possibly all R^3) or which is smooth and bounded. Given any open surface M, we prove that there exists a complete, proper minimal immersion f : M --> D. Moreover, if D is smooth and bounded, then we prove that the immersion f : M --> D can be chosen so that the limit sets of distinct ends of M are disjoint connected compact sets in the boundary of D.
We generalize the following result of White: Suppose $N$ is a compact, strictly convex domain in $\RR^3$ with smooth boundary. Let $Σ$ be a compact 2-manifold with boundary. Then a generic smooth curve $Γ\cong \partialΣ$ in $\partial N$ bounds an odd or even number of embedded minimal surfaces diffeomorphic to $Σ$ according to whether $Σ$ is or is not a union of disks. First, we prove that the parity theorem holds for any compact riemannian 3-manifold $N$ such that $N$ is strictly mean convex, $N$ is homeomorphic to a ball, $\partial N$ is smooth, and $N$ contains no closed minimal surfaces. W…
We prove a reflection principle for minimal surfaces in smooth (non necessarily analytic) three manifolds and we give an explicit application when the ambient space is just a smooth manifold.
We investigate solutions to the minimal surface problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the roto-translation group equipped with a subRiemannian metric. By work of G. Citti and A. Sarti, such solutions are amodal completions of occluded visual data when using a model of the first layer of the visual cortex. Using a characterization of smooth minimal surfaces as ruled surfaces, we give a method to compute a minimal spanning surface given fixed boundary data presuming such a surface exists. Moreover, we describe a number of obstructions to existence and uniqueness but also show that under …
Let $B_2(p)$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth geodesic ball with Ricci curvature $\geq-(n-1)κ^2$ for some $κ\geq0$. We establish the Sobolev inequality and the uniform Neumann-Poincaré inequality on each minimal graph over $B_1(p)$ by combining Cheeger-Colding theory and the current theory from geometric measure theory, where the constants in the inequalities only depends on $n$, $κ$, the lower bound of the volume of $B_1(p)$. As applications, we derive gradient estimates and a Liouville theorem for a minimal graph $M$ over a smooth complete noncompact manifold $Σ$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature a…
Let $(M^{n+1},g,e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete smooth metric measure space with $2\leq n\leq 6$ and Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces in $M$ with uniform upper bounds on $f$-index and weighted volume. As a corollary, we obtain a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $2\leq n\leq 6$. We also prove some estimates on the $f$-index of $f$-minimal hypersurfaces, and give a conformal structure of $f$-minimal surface with…
A theorem on the existence of the unique minimal topologic handle decomposition of differentiable simply connected five-dimensional manifolds is proved. For a decomposition of this sort, the number of handles of each index is given.
This paper proves that classical minimal surfaces of arbitrary topological type with total boundary curvature at most 4πmust be smoothly embedded. Related results are proved for varifolds and for soap film surfaces.
In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the Sobolev type embedding constant on a domain with minimally smooth boundary. We estimate the embedding constant by constructing an extension operator and computing its operator norm. We also present some examples of estimating the embedding constant for certain domains.
In this paper we construct smooth Riemannian metrics on the sphere which admit smooth Zoll families of minimal hypersurfaces. This generalizes a theorem of Guillemin for the case of geodesics. The proof uses the Nash-Moser Inverse Function Theorem in the tame maps setting of Hamilton. This answers a question of Yau on perturbations of minimal hypersurfaces in positive Ricci curvature. We also consider the case of the projective space and characterize those metrics on the sphere with minimal equators.
We show that the minimal volume entropy of closed manifolds remains unaffected when nonessential manifolds are added in a connected sum. We combine this result with the stable cohomotopy invariant of Bauer-Furuta in order to present an infinite family of four-manifolds with the following properties: 1) They have positive minimal volume entropy. 2) They satisfy a strict version of the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, with a minimal volume entropy term. 3) They nevertheless admit infinitely many distinct smooth structures for which no compatible Einstein metric exists.
Let $N$ be a Riemannian manifold and consider a stationary union of three or more $C^{1,μ}$ hypersurfaces-with-boundary $M_k$ in $N$ with a common boundary $Γ$. We show that if $N$ is smooth, then $Γ$ is smooth and each $M_k$ is smooth up to $Γ$ (real analytic in the case $N$ is real analytic). Consequently we strengthen a result of Wickramasekera to conclude that under the stronger hypothesis that $V$ is a stationary, stable, integral $n$-varifold in an $(n+1)$-dimensional, smooth (real analytic) Riemannian manifold such that the support of $\|V\|$ is nowhere locally the union of three or mor…
The problem of minimal distortion bending of smooth compact embedded connected Riemannian $n$-manifolds $M$ and $N$ without boundary is made precise by defining a deformation energy functional $Φ$ on the set of diffeomorphisms $\diff(M,N)$. We derive the Euler-Lagrange equation for $Φ$ and determine smooth minimizers of $Φ$ in case $M$ and $N$ are simple closed curves.
In our book on cohomological methods in transformation groups the minimal Hirsch-Brown model was used to good effect. The construction there, however, was rather abstract. Here, for smooth compact connected Lie group actions on smooth closed manifolds, we give a much more explicit construction of the minmal Hirsch-Brown model using operators from classical Hodge theory and the small Cartan model. As a simple example, we discuss circle actions on complex projective space, computing the deformation terms in the product by means of the moment map in two different ways.
We prove the existence of nontrivial closed surfaces with constant anisotropic mean curvature with respect to elliptic integrands in closed smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. The constructed min-max surfaces are smooth with at most one singular point. The constant anisotropic mean curvature can be fixed to be any real number. In particular, we partially solve a conjecture of Allard [Invent. Math.,1983] in dimension $3$.
The main result of this paper is a discrete Lawson correspondence between discrete CMC surfaces in R^3 and discrete minimal surfaces in S^3. This is a correspondence between two discrete isothermic surfaces. We show that this correspondence is an isometry in the following sense: it preserves the metric coefficients introduced previously by Bobenko and Suris for isothermic nets. Exactly as in the smooth case, this is a correspondence between nets with the same Lax matrices, and the immersion formulas also coincide with the smooth case.
We prove some stability results for smooth H-minimal hypersurfaces immersed in a sub-Riemannian k-step Carnot group G. The main tools are the formulas for the 1st and 2nd variation of the H-perimeter measure.
Let $N$ be a smooth $(n+l)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We show that if $V$ is an area-stationary union of three or more $C^{1,μ}$ $n$-dimensional submanifolds-with-boundary $M_k \subset N$ with a common boundary $Γ$, then $Γ$ is smooth and each $M_k$ is smooth up to $Γ$ (real-analytic in the case $N$ is real-analytic). This extends a previous result of the author for codimension $l = 1$. We additionally show that if $\{V_t\}_{t \in (-1,1)}$ is a Brakke flow such that each time-slice $V_t$ is a union of three or more $n$-dimensional submanifolds-with-boundary $M_{k,t} \subset N$ with a co…
