In the paper "Uniformity of Mordell-Lang" by Vesselin Dimitrov, Philipp Habegger and Ziyang Gao (arXiv:2001.10276), they use Silverman-Tate's Height Inequality and they give a proof of the same which makes use of Cartier divisors and hence drops the flatness assumption of structure morphisms of compactified abelian schemes. However, their proof makes use of Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities which is unknown for fields of positive characteristic. We try to slightly modify their ideas, use blow-ups in place of Hironaka's theorem to make the proof effective for any fields with product formula where heights can be defined and any normal quasi-projective variety as a base. We work in the more general set up of dynamical systems. As an application we prove certain variant of Silverman's Specialization Theorem with restricted hypotheses in higher dimensional bases.
The Kawaguchi--Silverman conjecture predicts that if $f\colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational-self map of a projective variety over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and $P$ is a $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-point of $X$ with Zariski-dense orbit, then the dynamical and arithmetic degrees of $f$ coincide: $λ_1(f) = α_f(P)$. We prove this conjecture in several higher-dimensional settings, including all endomorphisms of non-uniruled smooth projective threefolds with degree larger than $1$, and all endomorphisms of hyper-Kähler varieties in any dimension. In the latter case, we construct a canonical…
We prove a formula, which, given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,λ)$ over the field of algebraic numbers, relates the stable Faltings height of $A$ with the Néron--Tate height of a symmetric theta divisor on $A$. Our formula completes earlier results due to Bost, Hindry, Autissier and Wagener. The local non-archimedean terms in our formula can be expressed as the tropical moments of the tropicalizations of $(A,λ)$.
This paper contains results concerning a conjecture made by Lang and Silverman predicting a lower bound for the canonical height on abelian varieties of dimension 2 over number fields. The method used here is a local height decomposition. We derive as corollaries uniform bounds on the number of torsion points on families of abelian surfaces and on the number of rational points on families of genus 2 curves.
A 1979 letter from John Tate to Jean-Pierre Serre in which the author describes an efficient and elegant algorithm for computing local heights on elliptic curves.
We obtain new results concerning the Sato--Tate conjecture on the distribution of Frobenius angles over parametric families of elliptic curves with a rational parameter of bounded height.
We study families of varieties endowed with polarized canonical eigensystems of several maps, inducing canonical heights on the dominating variety as well as on the "good" fibers of the family. We show explicitely the dependence on the parameter for global and local canonical heights defined by Kawaguchi when the fibers change, extending previous works of J. Silverman and others. Finally, fixing an absolute value $v \in K$ and a variety $V/K$, we descript the Kawaguchi`s canonical local height $\hatλ_{V,E,\mathcal{Q},}(.,v)$ as an intersection number, provided that the polarized system $(V,\ma…
We develop a method to calculate the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on jacobians of curves defined over number fields. As examples we obtain closed expressions for the Néron-Tate height of the difference surface, the Abel-Jacobi images of the square of the curve, and of any symmetric theta divisor. As applications we obtain a new effective positive lower bound for the essential minimum of any Abel-Jacobi image of the curve and a proof, in the case of jacobians, of a formula proposed by Autissier relating the Faltings height of a principally polarized abelian variety with the…
We prove, for the canonical height defined by Silverman [15] on monomial maps, the existence of effective lower bounds for heights of points with Zariski dense orbit, for cases with endomorphisms induced by matrices with real Jordan form.
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
It was shown by Faltings and Hriljac that the Néron-Tate height of a point on the Jacobian of a curve can be expressed as the self-intersection of a corresponding divisor on a regular model of the curve. We make this explicit and use it to give an algorithm for computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. To demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm, we illustrate it by computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus from 1 to 9.
Let $f \in Q(z)$ be a polynomial or rational function of degree 2. A special case of Morton and Silverman's Dynamical Uniform Boundedness Conjecture states that the number of rational preperiodic points of $f$ is bounded above by an absolute constant. A related conjecture of Silverman states that the canonical height $\hat{h}_f(x)$ of a non-preperiodic rational point $x$ is bounded below by a uniform multiple of the height of $f$ itself. We provide support for these conjectures by computing the set of preperiodic and small height rational points for a set of degree 2 maps far beyond the range …
We show that the canonical height function defined by Silverman does not have the Northcott finiteness property in general. We develop a new canonical height function for monomial maps. In certain cases, this new canonical height function has nice properties.
We obtain asymptotic formulae for the number of primes $p\le x$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of the elliptic curve $$ \E_{a,b} : Y^2 = X^3 + aX + b $$ satisfies certain ``natural'' properties, on average over integers $a$ and $b$ with $|a|\le A$ and $|b| \le B$, where $A$ and $B$ are small relative to $x$. Specifically, we investigate behavior with respect to the Sato--Tate conjecture, cyclicity, and divisibility of the number of points by a fixed integer $m$.
We describe a general algorithm for computing intersection pairings on arithmetic surfaces. We have implemented our algorithm for curves over $\mathbb Q$, and we show how to use it to compute regulators for a number of Jacobians of smooth plane quartics, and to numerically verify the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for the Jacobian of the split Cartan curve of level 13, up to squares.
In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve which has split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ and whose analytic rank $r_{an}(E)$ equals one. The main goal of this article is to relate the second order derivative of the Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum $p$-adic $L$-function $L_p(E,s)$ of $E$ to Nekovář's height pairing evaluated on natural elements arising from the Beilinson-Kato elements. Along the way, we extend a Rubin-style formula of Nekovář (or in an alternative wording, correct another Rubin-style formula of his) to apply in the presence of exceptional zeros. Our height formula allows us, among …
We define the height of a motive over a number field. We show that if we assume the finiteness of motives of bounded height, Tate conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate module can be proved for motives with good reduction at $p$.
Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p) with perfect residue field, K the fraction field of R. Suppose G is a Barsotti-Tate group (p-divisible group) defined over K which acquires good reduction over a finite extension K' of K. We prove that there exists a constant c which depends on the absolute ramification index e(K'/Q_p) and the height of G such that G has good reduction over K if and only if G[p^c] can be extended to a finite flat group scheme over R. For abelian varieties with potentially good reduction, this result generalizes Grothendieck's p-adic Ner…
We give applications of integral canonical models of orthogonal Shimura varieties and the Kuga-Satake morphism to the arithmetic of K3 surfaces over finite fields. We prove every K3 surface of finite height over a finite field admits a characteristic 0 lifting whose generic fiber is a K3 surface with complex multiplication. Combined with the results of Mukai and Buskin, we prove the Tate conjecture for the square of a K3 surface over a finite field. To obtain these results, we construct an analogue of Kisin's algebraic group for a K3 surface of finite height, and construct characteristic 0 lif…
Silverman proved a height inequality for jointly regular family of rational maps and the author improved it for jointly regular pairs. In this paper, we provide the same improvement for jointly regular family; if S is a jointly regular set of rational maps, then \sum_{f\in S} \dfrac{1}{°f} h\bigl(f(P) \bigr) > (1+ \dfrac{1}{r}) f(P) - C where r = \max_{f\in S} r(f).
We exhibit a precise connection between Néron--Tate heights on smooth curves and biextension heights of limit mixed Hodge structures associated to smoothing deformations of singular quotient curves. Our approach suggests a new way to compute Beilinson--Bloch heights in higher dimensions.
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
K. Kato has recently defined and studied heights of mixed motives and proposed some interesting questions. In this paper, we relate the study of heights to the study of Tamagawa numbers of motives. We also partially answer one of Kato's questions about the number of mixed motives of bounded heights in the case of mixed Tate motives with two graded quotients. Finally, we provide a concrete computation with the number of mixed Tate motives with three graded quotients.
We define an "ample canonical height" for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call--Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mo…
Call and Silverman introduced the canonical height associated to a polarized dynamical system, that is, an endomorphism of a projective variety and an ample line bundle which pulls back to a tensor power of itself. They also presented an asymptotic for the variation of this height in a family over a one-dimensional base in terms of the height on the generic fibre and the height of the parameter. Here we improve this asymptotic, saving a power in the error term. As a corollary, we give an explicit bound on the height of parameters at which the dynamical system specialized to a finite orbit, in …
We generalize the G.C.D. results of Corvaja--Zannier and Levin on $\mathbb G_m^n$ to more general settings. More specifically, we analyze the height of a closed subscheme of codimension at least $2$ inside an $n$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay projective variety, and show that this height is small when evaluated at integral points with respect to a divisor $D$ when $D$ is a sum of $n+1$ effective divisors which are all numerically equivalent to some multiples of a fixed ample divisor. Our method is inspired by Silverman's G.C.D. estimate as an application of Vojta's conjecture, which is substitute…
We give a direct proof that the Mazur-Tate and Coleman-Gross heights on elliptic curves coincide. The main ingredient is to extend the Coleman-Gross height to the case of divisors with non-disjoint support and, doing some $p$-adic analysis, show that, in particular, its component above $p$ gives, in the special case of an ordinary elliptic curve, the $p$-adic sigma function. We use this result to give a short proof of a theorem of Kim characterizing integral points on elliptic curves in some cases under weaker assumptions. As a further application, we give new formulas to compute double Colema…
We give a purely local proof, in the depth 0 case, of the result by Harris-Taylor which asserts that the local Langlands correspondence for GL_n over a p-adic field K realizes itself inside the vanishing cycle cohomology of the deformation space of formal O_K-modules of height n. Our proof is given by establishing the direct geometric link with the Deligne-Lusztig theory for GL_n over the residue field.
A theorem of Tate asserts that, for an elliptic surface E/X defined over a number field k, and a section P of E, there exists a divisor D on X such that the canonical height of the specialization of P to the fibre above t differs from the height of t relative to D by at most a bounded amount. We prove the analogous statement for a one-parameter family of polynomial dynamical systems. Moreover, we compare, at each place of k, the local canonical height with the local contribution to the height relative to D, and show that the difference is analytic near the support of D, a result which is analo…
In this paper we study the analyticity of the group action of the automorphism group $G$ of a formal module $\bar{F}$ of height 2 (defined over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$) on the Lubin-Tate deformation space $X$ of $\bar{F}$. It is shown that a wide open congruence group of level zero attached to a non-split torus acts analytically on a particular disc in $X$ on which the period morphism is not injective. For certain other discs with larger radii (defined in terms of quasi-canonical liftings) we find wide open rigid analytic groups which act analytically on these discs.
We construct an integral model for Lubin-Tate curves as moduli of finite subgroups of formal deformations over complete Noetherian local rings. They are p-adic completions of the modular curves X_0(p) at a mod-p supersingular point. Our model is semistable in the sense that the only singularities of its special fiber are normal crossings. Given this model, we obtain a uniform presentation for the Dyer-Lashof algebra of Morava E-theories at height 2 as local moduli of power operations in elliptic cohomology.
We construct a tower of fields from the rings $R_n$ which parametrize pairs $(X,λ)$, where $X$ is a deformation of a fixed one-dimensional formal group $\mathbb{X}$ of finite height $h$, together with a Drinfeld level-$n$ structure $λ$. We choose principal prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}_n \mid (p)$ in each ring $R_n$ in a compatible way and consider the field $K'_n$ obtained by localizing $R_n$ at $\mathfrak{p}_n$, completing, and passing to the fraction field. By taking the compositum $K_n = K'_n K_0$ of each field with the completion $K_0$ of a certain unramified extension of $K'_0$, we obtain a…
We present a dynamical proof of the well-known fact that the Neron-Tate canonical height (and its local counterpart) takes rational values at points of an elliptic curve over a function field k of transcendence degree 1 over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 0. More generally, we investigate the mechanism for which the local canonical height for a rational function f defined over k can take irrational values (at points in a local completion of k), providing examples in all degrees greater than 1. Building on Kiwi's classification of non-archimedean Julia sets for quadratic maps…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication defined over a number field $K$ which has at least one real embedding. The field $F$ generated by all torsion points of $E$ over $K$ is an infinite, non-abelian Galois extension of the ground field which has unbounded, wild ramification above all primes. Following the treatment in 'Small Height And Infinite Nonabelian Extensions' by P. Habegger we prove that the absolute logarithmic Weil height of an element of $F$ is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant depending only on $E$ and $K$. We also show that the Néron-Ta…
Denis associated to each Drinfeld module M over a global function function field L a canonical height function, which plays a role analogous to that of the Neron-Tate height in the context of elliptic curves. We prove that there exist constants ε>0 and C, depending only on the number of places at which M has bad reduction, such that either x in M is a torsion point of bounded order, or else the canonical height of x is bound below by εmax{h(j_M), deg(D_M)}, where j_M is a certain invariant of the isomorphism class of M, and D_M is the minimal discriminant of M. As an application, we make some …
A field F is said to have the Bogomolov Property related to a height function h, if h(a) is either zero or bounded from below by a positive constant for all a in F. In this paper we prove that the maximal algebraic extension of a number field K, which is unramified at a place v|p, has the Bogomolov Property related to all canonical heights coming from a Lattès map related to a Tate elliptic curve. To prove this algebraical statement we use analytic methods on the related Berkovich spaces.
We prove an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem for the Legendre elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. More precisely, if $d$ is an integer coprime to $q$, we denote by $E_d$ the elliptic curve with model $y^2=x(x+1)(x+t^d)$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We give an asymptotic estimate of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) with its Néron-Tate regulator, in terms of the exponential differential height of $E_d$, as $d\to\infty$.
For a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p\geq 5$ and $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, we consider the family of elliptic curves $E_d$ over $K$ given by $y^2+xy - t^dy=x^3$ for all integers $d$ coprime to $q$. We provide an explicit expression for the $L$-functions of these curves in terms of Jacobi sums. Moreover, we deduce from this calculation that the curves $E_d$ satisfy an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem. More precisely, we estimate the asymptotic growth of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) by its Néron-Tate regulator, in …
