We prove that every oriented tree on $n$ vertices with bounded maximum degree appears as a spanning subdigraph of every directed graph on $n$ vertices with minimum semidegree at least $n/2+o(n)$. This can be seen as a directed graph analogue of a well-known theorem of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi. Our result for trees follows from a more general result, allowing the embedding of arbitrary orientations of a much wider class of spanning ``tree-like'' structures, such as collections of at most $O(n^{0.99})$ pairwise vertex-disjoint cycles and subdivisions of graphs $H$ with $|H| < \exp (\sqrt{O(\log n)})$ in which each edge is subdivided at least once.
The chromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of acyclic subgraphs covering the vertex set of $D$. A tournament $H$ is a hero if every $H$-free tournament $T$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$. Inspired by the celebrated Erdős--Hajnal conjecture, Berger et al. fully characterized the class of heroes in 2013. We extend this framework to dense digraphs: A digraph $H$ is a superhero if every $H$-free digraph $D$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$ and $α(D)$, the independence number of the underlying graph of $D$. We prove here that a digraph is a super…
A permutation in a digraph $G=(V, E)$ is a bijection $f:V \rightarrow V$ such that for all $v \in V$ we either have that $f$ fixes $v$ or $(v, f(v)) \in E$. A derangement in $G$ is a permutation that does not fix any vertex. In [1] it is proved that in any digraph, the ratio of derangements to permutations is at most $1/2$. Answering a question posed in [1], we show that the set of possible ratios of derangements to permutations in digraphs is dense in the interval $[0, 1/2]$.
We give new decomposition theorems for classes of graphs that can be transduced in first-order logic from classes of sparse graphs -- more precisely, from classes of bounded expansion and from nowhere dense classes. In both cases, the decomposition takes the form of a single colored rooted tree of bounded depth where, in addition, there can be links between nodes that are not related in the tree. The constraint is that the structure formed by the tree and the links has to be sparse. Using the decomposition theorem for transductions of nowhere dense classes, we show that they admit low-shrubdep…
A geometric method for obtaining an infinite family of Cayley digraphs of constant density on finite Abelian groups is presented. The method works for any given degree and it is based on consecutive dilates of a minimum distance diagram associated with a given initial Cayley digraph. The method is used to obtain infinite families of dense or asymptotically dense Cayley digraphs. In particular, for degree $d=3$, an infinite family of maximum known density is proposed.

Let G be a digraph (without parallel edges) such that every directed cycle has length at least four; let $β(G)$ denote the size of the smallest subset X in E(G) such that $G\X$ has no directed cycles, and let $γ(G)$ be the number of unordered pairs {u,v} of vertices such that u,v are nonadjacent in G. It is easy to see that if $γ(G) = 0$ then $β(G) = 0$; what can we say about $β(G)$ if $γ(G)$ is bounded? We prove that in general $β(G)$ is at most $γ(G)$. We conjecture that in fact $β(G)$ is at most $γ(G)/2$ (this would be best possible if true), and prove this conjecture in two special cases: …
Let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a uniformly random $d$-regular digraph on $n$ vertices, and suppose that $\min(d,n-d)\geqλn$. We show that for any $κ\geq 0$, \[\mathbb{P}[s_n(A)\leqκ]\leq C_λκ\sqrt{n}+2e^{-c_λn}.\] Up to the constants $C_λ, c_λ> 0$, our bound matches optimal bounds for $n\times n$ random matrices, each of whose entries is an i.i.d $\text{Ber}(d/n)$ random variable. The special case $κ= 0$ of our result confirms a conjecture of Cook regarding the probability of singularity of dense random regular digraphs.
We give several results showing that different discrete structures typically gain certain spanning substructures (in particular, Hamilton cycles) after a modest random perturbation. First, we prove that adding linearly many random edges to a dense k-uniform hypergraph ensures the (asymptotically almost sure) existence of a perfect matching or a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof involves an interesting application of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma, which might be independently useful. We next prove that digraphs with certain strong expansion properties are pancyclic, and use this to show that addin…
Fix $c\in (0,1)$ and let $Γ$ be a $\lfloor c n\rfloor$-regular digraph on $n$ vertices drawn uniformly at random. We prove that when $n$ is large, the (non-symmetric) adjacency matrix $M$ of $Γ$ is invertible with high probability. The proof uses a couplings approach based on the switchings method of McKay and Wormald. We also rely on discrepancy properties for the distribution of edges in $Γ$, recently proved by the author, to overcome certain difficulties stemming from the dependencies between the entries of $M$.
We consider the following question. We are given a dense digraph $D$ with minimum in- and out-degree at least $αn$, where $α>1/2$ is a constant. The edges of $D$ are given edge costs $C(e),e\in E(D)$, where $C(e)$ is an independent copy of the uniform $[0,1]$ random variable $U$. Let $C(i,j),i,j\in[n]$ be the associated $n\times n$ cost matrix where $C(i,j)=\infty$ if $(i,j)\notin E(D)$. We show that w.h.p. the patching algorithm of Karp finds a tour for the asymmetric traveling salesperson problem that is asymptotically equal to that of the associated assignment problem. Karp's algorithm runs…
Mader proved that every strongly $k$-connected $n$-vertex digraph contains a strongly $k$-connected spanning subgraph with at most $2kn - 2k^2$ edges, where the equality holds for the complete bipartite digraph ${DK}_{k,n-k}$. For dense strongly $k$-connected digraphs, this upper bound can be significantly improved. More precisely, we prove that every strongly $k$-connected $n$-vertex digraph $D$ contains a strongly $k$-connected spanning subgraph with at most $kn + 800k(k+\overlineΔ(D))$ edges, where $\overlineΔ(D)$ denotes the maximum degree of the complement of the underlying undirected gra…
The notion of robust expansion has played a central role in the solution of several conjectures involving the packing of Hamilton cycles in graphs and directed graphs. These and other results usually rely on the fact that every robustly expanding (di)graph with suitably large minimum degree contains a Hamilton cycle. Previous proofs of this require Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and so this fact can only be applied to dense, sufficiently large robust expanders. We give a proof that does not use the Regularity Lemma and, indeed, we can apply our result to suitable sparse robustly expanding digrap…
A mixed graph can be seen as a type of digraph containing some edges (two opposite arcs). Here we introduce the concept of sequence mixed graphs, which is a generalization of both sequence graphs and iterated line digraphs. These structures are proven to be useful in the problem of constructing dense graphs or digraphs, and this is related to the degree/diameter problem. Thus, our generalized approach gives rise to graphs that have also good ratio order/diameter. Moreover, we propose a general method for obtaining a sequence mixed digraph by identifying some vertices of a certain iterated line…

Let $1\le n\in\Z$. {\it Worst-case efficient dominating sets in digraphs} are conceived so that their presence in certain strong digraphs $\vec{ST}_n$ corresponds to that of efficient dominating sets in star graphs $ST_n$: The fact that the star graphs $ST_n$ form a so-called dense segmental neighborly E-chain is reflected in a corresponding fact for the digraphs $\vec{ST}_n$. Related chains of graphs and open problems are presented as well.
A Boolean network (BN) with $n$ components is a discrete dynamical system described by the successive iterations of a function $f:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}^n$. In most applications, the main parameter is the interaction graph of $f$: the digraph with vertex set $\{1,\dots,n\}$ that contains an arc from $j$ to $i$ if $f_i$ depends on input $j$. What can be said on the set $\mathcal{G}(f)$ of the interaction graphs of the BNs $h$ isomorphic to $f$, that is, such that $h\circ π=π\circ f$ for some permutation $π$ of $\{0,1\}^n$? It seems that this simple question has never been studied. Here, we report …
We provide asymptotic formulae for the numbers of bipartite graphs with given degree sequence, and of loopless digraphs with given in- and out-degree sequences, for a wide range of parameters. Our results cover medium range densities and close the gaps between the results known for the sparse and dense ranges. In the case of bipartite graphs, these results were proved by Greenhill, McKay and Wang in 2006 and by Canfield, Greenhill and McKay in 2008, respectively. Our method also essentially covers the sparse range, for which much less was known in the case of loopless digraphs. For the range o…
An automata network with $n$ components over a finite alphabet $Q$ of size $q$ is a discrete dynamical system described by the successive iterations of a function $f:Q^n\to Q^n$. In most applications, the main parameter is the interaction graph of $f$: the digraph with vertex set $[n]$ that contains an arc from $j$ to $i$ if $f_i$ depends on input $j$. What can be said on the set $\mathbb{G}(f)$ of the interaction graphs of the automata networks isomorphic to $f$? It seems that this simple question has never been studied. Here, we report some basic facts. First, we prove that if $n\geq 5$ or $…
We prove part of a conjecture by Johansson, Kahn and Vu \cite{JKV} regarding threshold functions for the existence of an $H$-factor in a random graph \gnp. We prove that the conjectured threshold function is correct for any graph $H$ which is not covered by its densest subgraphs. We also demonstrate that the main result of \cite{JKV} generalises to multigraphs, digraphs, and a multipartite model.
We study the Moran process as adapted by Lieberman, Hauert and Nowak. This is a model of an evolving population on a graph or digraph where certain individuals, called "mutants" have fitness r and other individuals, called non-mutants have fitness 1. We focus on the situation where the mutation is advantageous, in the sense that r>1. A family of digraphs is said to be strongly amplifying if the extinction probability tends to 0 when the Moran process is run on digraphs in this family. The most-amplifying known family of digraphs is the family of megastars of Galanis et al. We show that this fa…

Let S and T be vectors of positive integers with the same sum. We study the uniform distribution on the space of simple bipartite graphs with degree sequence S in one part and T in the other; equivalently, binary matrices with row sums S and column sums T. In particular, we find precise formulae for the probabilities that a given bipartite graph is edge-disjoint from, a subgraph of, or an induced subgraph of a random graph in the class. We also give similar formulae for the uniform distribution on the set of simple directed graphs with out-degrees S and in-degrees T. In each case, the graphs o…
We introduce the concept of shallow directed minors and based on this a new classification of classes of directed graphs which is diametric to existing directed graph decompositions and width measures proposed in the literature. We then study in depth one type of classes of directed graphs which we call nowhere crownful. The classes are very general as they include, on one hand, all classes of directed graphs whose underlying undirected class is nowhere dense, such as planar, bounded-genus, and $H$-minor-free graphs; and on the other hand, also contain classes of high edge density whose underl…
The theory of limits of discrete combinatorial objects has been thriving for the last decade or so. The syntactic, algebraic approach to the subject is popularly known as "flag algebras", while the semantic, geometric one is often associated with the name ``graph limits''. The language of graph limits is generally more intuitive and expressible, but a price that one has to pay for it is that it is better suited for the case of ordinary graphs than for more general combinatorial objects. Accordingly, there have been several attempts in the literature, of varying degree of generality, to define …
