In Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 197002 (2009) it was reported that the element Eu becomes superconducting in the pressure and temperature range [84-142GPa], [1.8-2.75K]. The claim was largely based on ac susceptibility measurements. Recently reported ac susceptibility measurements on a hydride compound under pressure that appears to become superconducting near room temperature (Nature 586, 373 (2020)) cast serious doubt on the validity of the results for Eu as well as for the hydride. Here I present results that shed new light on the true behaviour of Eu. It is argued that the experiments on Eu have to be repeated to either validate or rule out the claim that it is a superconducting element.
In europium-based iron pnictides superconducting Fe-planes can be influenced by a Zeeman field originated from the neighboring Eu-planes. The field tends to induce spin-density waves with a ferromagnetic average which coexists with the superconducting order by forming complementary patterns of the superconducting and magnetic order parameters in a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and a two-dimensional textured-superconducting phase. The hard gap around the Fermi energy disappears in these fragile inhomogeneous superconducting states, which features, instead, V-shaped spin-resolved local …
We report on nonlocal spin transport in mesoscopic superconducting aluminum wires in contact with the ferromagnetic insulator europium sulfide. We find spin injection and long-range spin transport in the regime of the exchange splitting induced by europium sulfide. Our results demonstrate that spin transport in superconductors can be manipulated by ferromagnetic insulators, and opens a new path to control spin currents in superconductors.
Superconductivity can be realized in Eu-containing pnictides by application of chemical (internal) and physical (external) pressure, the intrinsic physical mechanism of which attracts much attention in physics community. Here we present the experimental evidence for the valence change of europium in compounds of EuFe2As1.4P0.6 exposed to ambient pressure and EuFe2As2 to high pressure by x-ray absorption measurements on L3-Eu edge. We find that the absorption spectrum of EuFe2As1.4P0.6 at ambient pressure shows clear spectra weight transfer from a divalent to a trivalent state. Furthermore, app…
Divalent Eu (4f7, J=7/2) possesses a strong local magnetic moment which suppresses superconductivity. Under sufficient pressure it is anticipated that Eu will become trivalent (4f6, J=0) and a weak Van Vleck paramagnet, thus opening the door for a possible superconducting state, in analogy with Am metal (5f6, J=0) which superconducts at 0.79 K. We present ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on Eu metal for temperatures 1.5 - 297 K to pressures as high as 142 GPa. At approximately 80 GPa Eu becomes superconducting at Tc = 1.8 K; Tc increases linearly with pressure to 2.75 …
We have calculated the electronic structure of Eu for the bcc, hcp, and fcc crystal structures for volumes near equilibrium up to a calculated 90 GPa pressure using the augmented-plane wave method in the local-density approximation. The frozen-core approximation was used with a semi-empirical shift of the f-states energies in the radial Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation to move the occupied 4f valence states below the $Γ_1$ energy and into the core. This shift of the highly localized f-states yields the correct europium phase ordering with lattice parameters and bulk moduli in good agreement with …
The effect of annealing in high pressure oxygen atmosphere on superconducting transition temperatures for ceramic samples of magnetic superconductor europium based 1222 ruthenocuprate was studied. It was shown that the properties of the samples are consistent with the behavior of granular superconducting system. As a result of oxygen saturation the superconducting transition temperatures become higher. Particularly, the shift of superconducting transition temperature for the intergranular medium is 9.2 K and for the matter within the granules 6.8 K. This difference is supposed due to the mecha…
We predict that simple metals and early transition metals that become superconducting under high pressures will show a change in sign of their Hall coefficient from negative to positive under pressure. If verified, this will strongly suggest that hole carriers play a fundamental role in `conventional' superconductivity, as predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity.
Two single crystalline samples with the same nominal composition of Rb0.8Fe2Se2 prepared via slightly different precursor routes under the same thermal processing conditions were investigated at ambient and high pressures. One sample was found superconducting with a Tc of ~31 K without the previously reported resistivity-hump and the other was unexpectedly found to be a narrow-gap semiconductor. While the high pressure data can be understood in terms of pressure-induced variation in doping, the detailed doping effect on superconductivity is yet to be determined.
This work reports studies performed in the superconducting compound FeSe0:5Te0:5 under high pressure. Changes were observed in the transition temperature, superconducting critical fields, anomalous variations in the Meissner fraction, and in Ginzburg Landau parameters. The superconducting properties were calculated and compared using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenber approximation and Ginzburg-Landau theory. Hydrostatic pressure was produced from atmospheric to 823 MPa, the increment in the critical temperature was from 14.45 to 20.5 K at a rate of change about 0.0069 K/MPa.
We measured the electrical resistivity, $\varrho(T)$, of superconducting CaC$\_6$ at ambient and high pressure up to 16 GPa. For $P \leq$8 GPa, we found a large increase of $T\_c$ with pressure from 11.5 up to 15.1 K. At 8 GPa, $T\_c$ drops and levels off at 5 K above 10 GPa. Correspondingly, the residual $\varrho$ increases by $\approx$ 200 times and the $\varrho(T)$ behavior becomes flat. The recovery of the pristine behavior after depressurization is suggestive of a phase transition at 8 GPa between two superconducting phases with good and bad metallic properties, the latter with a lower $T…
We present the structural, electronic and superconducting properties of Li2B2 under pressure within the framework of the density functional theory. The structural parameters, electronic band structure, phonon frequency of the E2g phonon mode and superconducting critical temperature Tc were calculated for pressures up to 20 GPa. We predicted that the superconducting critical temperature of Li2B2 is about 11 K and this decreases as pressure increases. We found that even though the lattice dynamics of the E2g phonon mode is similar to MgB2, the reduction of the σ-band density of states at Fermi l…
The pressure dependence, up to 11.3 kbar, of basic parameters of the superconducting state, such as the critical temperature (Tc), the lower and the upper critical fields, the coherence length, the penetration depth, and their anisotropy, was determined from magnetic measurements performed for two singlecrystalline samples of FeTe0.5Se0.5. We have found pressure-induced enhancement of all of the superconducting state properties, which entails a growth of the density of superconducting carriers. However, we noticed more pronounced increase in superconducting carrier density under pressure than …
Measurements of the superconducting transition temperatures for Al-doped, C-doped and neutron-damaged-annealed MgB2 samples under pressure up to ~8 kbar are presented. The dT_c/dP values change systematically with the decrease of the ambient pressure T_c in a regular fashion. The evolution of the pressure derivatives can be understood assuming that the change in phonon spectrum is a dominant contribution to dT_c/dP.
The pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature of MgB2 has been determined using gas pressure up to 1 GPa. The transition temperature Tc was found to decrease linearly at a constant rate over the whole pressure range. The recently observed dramatic decrease of dTc/dp at the 40 K freezing pressure (0.5 GPa) cannot be confirmed. The pressure coefficient was also found to be independent of the hydrostatic or nonhydrostatic He environment. The differences in recently reported values of dTc/dp may be attributed to variations in the sample conditions, e.g. stoichiometry.
Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements under external pressure were performed on single-crystals NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0, 0.01, 0.028, 0.075, 0.109). The maximum Tc enhanced by pressure in both underdoped and optimally doped NaFe1-xCoxAs is the same, as high as 31 K. The overdoped sample with x = 0.075 also shows a positive pressure effect on Tc, and an enhancement of Tc by 13 K is achieved under pressure of 2.3 GPa. All the superconducting samples show large positive pressure coefficient on superconductivity, being different from Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. However, the superconductivity cannot…
Candidates for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were searched by the high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database. The synthesized SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ among the target compounds showed a narrow band gap of 354 meV, and a thermal conductivity of 1 W/Km at ambient pressure. The sample SnBi$_2$Se$_4$ showed a metal-insulator transition at 11.1 GPa, as predicted by a theoretical estimation. Furthermore, the two pressure-induced superconducting transitions were discovered at under 20.2 GPa an…
Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature Tc have been performed by the inductive method on MgB2 at pressures up to 28 GPa. Tc decreases with applied pressure, exhibiting a cusp at about 9 GPa. We interpret the appearance of this anomaly in the Tc(P) dependence as a result of the pressure-induced electronic transition. Recent band-structure calculations for MgB2 give some support for such an explanation.
To examine the electronic phase diagram of superconducting CuO double chains, we report the effect of external pressure on the magneto-transport properties in superconducting and non-superconducting polycrystalline samples of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ at low temperatures (1.8-40 K) under various magnetic fields (up to 14 T). In the as-sintered non-superconducting sample, the magneto-resistance (MR) follows a power law of $H^{3/2}$ at low temperatures, which is in no agreement with the $H^{2}$ dependence of MR in the PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ system. The negative pressure dependence of…
The superconducting systems emerging from topological insulators upon metal ion intercalation or application of high pressure are ideal for investigation of possible topological superconductivity. In this context, Sr-intercalated Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is specially interesting because it displays pressure induced re-entrant superconductivity where the high pressure phase shows almost two times higher $T_c$ than the ambient superconducting phase ( $T_C\sim$ 2.9 K). Interestingly, unlike the ambient phase, the pressure-induced superconducting phase shows strong indication of unconventional superconductivi…
We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.
AC susceptibility measurements have been carried out on superconducting LaO1-xFxFeAs for x=0.07 and 0.14 under He-gas pressures to about 0.8 GPa. Not only do the measured values of dTc/dP differ substantially from those obtained in previous studies using other pressure media, but the Tc(P) dependences observed depend on the detailed pressure/temperature history of the sample. A sizeable sensitivity of Tc(P) to shear stresses provides a possible explanation.
Polycrystalline samples of Sr1-xRExFBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction and characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Although all the Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 samples exhibited superconductivity at transition temperatures (Tc) within the range of 2.1-2.7 K under ambient pressure, the estimated superconducting volume fraction was small. This indicated the non-bulk nature of superconductivity in these samples under ambient pressure. A dramatic evolution of the bulk superconducting phases was achieved on applying an external hydrostatic pressure. Near …
We report on a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe_1-x under pressures up to 1.4GPa by means of AC magnetization and muon-spin rotation. At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These e…
A unique platform for investigating the correlation between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) states in high temperature superconductors is created by the discovery of alkaline iron selenide superconductors which are composed of an AFM insulating phase and a SC phase separated spatially. Our previous studies showed that pressure can fully suppress the superconductivity of ambient-pressure superconducting phase (SC-I) and AFM order simultaneously, then induce another superconducting phase (SC-II) at higher pressure. Consequently, the connection between the two superconducting…
We have investigated uniaxial pressure effect on superconductivity of pure Sr2RuO4, whose intrinsic superconducting transition temperature Tc is 1.5 K. It was revealed that a very low uniaxial pressure along the c axis, only 0.2 GPa, induces superconductivity with the onset Tc above 3 K. The present results indicate that pure Sr2RuO4 has two superconducting phases with Tc = 1.5 K and with varying Tc up to 3.2 K. The latter phase exhibits unusual features and is attributable to anisotropic crystal distortions beyond the elastic limit.
We present the evolution of the initial (up to ~ 10 kbar) hydrostatic, pressure dependencies of Tc and of the ambient pressure jump in the heat capacity associated with the superconducting transition as a function of K - doping in the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 family of iron-based superconductors. The pressure derivatives show weak but distinct anomaly near x ~ 0.7. In the same concentration region Delta Cp at Tc deviates from the Delta Cp ~ T^3 scaling found for most BaFe2As2 - based superconductors. These results are consistent with a Lifshitz transition, and possible significant modification of the sup…
The recent-discovered Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ superconductor provides an alternative and ideal material base for investigating possible topological superconductivity. Here, we report that in Sr$_{0.065}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_3$, the ambient superconducting phase is gradually depressed upon the application of external pressure. At high pressure, a second superconducting phase emerges at above 6 GPa, with a maximum $T_c$ value of $\sim$8.3 K. The joint investigations of the high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport properties reveal that the re-emergence of superconductivity in Sr$_{…
We report an unexpected positive hydrostatic pressure derivative of the superconducting transition temperature in the doped topological insulator \NBS via $dc$ SQUID magnetometry in pressures up to 0.6 GPa. This result is contrary to reports on the homologues \CBS and \SBS where smooth suppression of $T_c$ is observed. Our results are consistent with recent Ginzburg-Landau theory predictions of a pressure-induced enhancement of $T_c$ in the nematic multicomponent $E_u$ state proposed to explain observations of rotational symmetry breaking in doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ superconductors.
We present heat capacity, c-axis thermal expansion and pressure dependent, low field, temperature dependent magnetization for pressures up to ~ 12 kbar, data for KFe2As2 single crystals. Tc decreases under pressure with dTc/dP ~ -0.10 K/kbar. The inferred uniaxial, c-axis, pressure derivative is positive, dTc/dpc ~ 0.11 K/kbar. The data are analyzed in comparison with those for overdoped Fe-based superconductors. Arguments are presented that superconductivity in KFe2As2 may be different from the other overdoped, Fe-based materials in the 122 family.
The superfluid density and superconducting gaps of superconducting RbFe_{2}As_{2} have been determined as a function of temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure by susceptibility and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. From the data, fundamental microscopic parameters of the superconducting state like the London penetration depth λ, the gap values Δ, the upper critical field B_{c2}, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κhave been obtained. In accordance with earlier measurements the ratio of the superfluid density n_{s} \propto λ^{-2} to the superconducting transition temperature T_{…
The unusual phase has been recently observed in the organic material (TMTSF)$_{2}$PF$_{6}$, where superconductivity (SC) coexists with spin-density wave (SDW) in the pressure interval $p_{c1}<p<p_{c}$ below the first order transition into SC or normal metal phase. Assuming that the coexistence takes place on the microscopic scale, we consider the properties of the intermediate phase. We show that the new superconducting state inside SDW phase just above $p_{c1}$ must bear a triplet pairing.
We present electrical resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements of GdTe$_3$, TbTe$_3$ and DyTe$_3$ performed under pressure. An upper charge-density-wave (CDW) is suppressed at a rate of $\mathrm{d}T_{\mathrm{CDW,1}}/\mathrm{d}P$ = $-$85 K/GPa. For TbTe$_3$ and DyTe$_3$, a second CDW below $T_{\mathrm{CDW,2}}$ increases with pressure until it reaches the $T_{\mathrm{CDW,1}}$($P$) line. For GdTe$_3$, the lower CDW emerges as pressure is increased above $\sim$ 1 GPa. As these two CDW states are suppressed with pressure, superconductivity (SC) appears in the three compounds at lower temperat…
We report the results of our investigation of SrPt3P, a recently discovered strong-coupling superconductor with Tc = 8.4 K, by application of high physical pressure and by chemical doping. We study hole-doped SrPt3P, which was theoretically predicted to have a higher Tc, resistively, magnetically, and calorimetrically. Here we present the results of these studies and discuss their implications.
Measurements of the magnetization under high hydrostatic pressure (up to 10.2 kbar) in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 were carried out. From the scaling analysis of the magnetization data the pressure induced shifts of the transition temperature T_c, the volume V and the anisotropy γhave been obtained. It was shown that the pressure induced relative shift of T_c mirrors essentially that of the anisotropy. This observation uncovers a novel generic property of anisotropic type II superconductors, that inexistent in the isotropic case.
Pressure effects on a recently discovered BiS2-based superconductor Bi2(O,F)S2 (Tc = 5.1 K) were examined via two different methods; high pressure resistivity measurement and high pressure annealing. The effects of these two methods on the superconducting properties of Bi2(O,F)S2 were significantly different although in both methods hydrostatic pressure is applied to the sample by the cubic-anvil-type apparatus. In high pressure resistivity measurement, Tc linearly decreased at the rate of -1.2 K GPa-1. In contrast, the Tc of 5.1 K is maintained after high pressure annealing under 2 GPa and 47…
The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature T_{c} on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been determined to 67 GPa in an ac susceptibility measurement for a Li sample embedded in helium pressure medium. With increasing pressure, superconductivity appears at 5.47 K for 20.3 GPa, T_{c} rising rapidly to ~ 14 K at 30 GPa. The T_{c}(P)-dependence to 67 GPa differs significantly from that observed in previous studies where no pressure medium was used. Evidence is given that superconductivity in Li competes with symmetry breaking structural phase transitions which occur near 20, 30, and…
Pressure dependence of the electronic and crystal structures of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$, which has pressure-induced two superconducting domes of SC I and SC II, was investigated by x-ray emission spectroscopy and diffraction. X-ray diffraction data show that compressibility along the c-axis changes around 12 GPa, where a new superconducting phase of SC II appears. This suggests a possible tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition. X-ray emission spectroscopy data also shows the change in the electronic structure around 12 GPa. These results can be explained by the scenario that the…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic are…
The only alkali metal known to be superconducting at ambient pressure is Li at 0.4 mK. Under 30 GPa pressure \textit{T}$_{c}$ for Li rises to 14 K. In addition, nearly 50 years ago the heavy alkali metal Cs was reported to become superconducting near 1.3 K at 12 GPa. In the present experiment the superconductivity of Cs under pressure is confirmed. In addition, strong evidence is presented in electrical resistivity measurements that neighboring Rb also becomes superconducting near 2 K at 55 GPa as it enters the \textit{oC}16 phase, as for Cs, where \textit{T}$_{c}$ decreases under the applicat…
Here we present a systematic study of the effects of pressure on the superconducting and spin/charge density wave (SDW/CDW) transitions of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O (x = 0, 0.10, and 0.15) by means of resistivity measurements. For x = 0 and 0.10, external pressure results in a decease of the SDW/CDW transition temperature T$_c$; however, no measurable change is observed for the x = 0.15. The pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature is different for all three samples. For BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O (x=0), T$_c$ increases significantly from 1.2 K at zero pressure to $\sim$ 2.9 K at…
Simultaneous low-temperature electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements were performed on single-crystalline Bi2Se3 under applied pressures up to 50 GPa. As a function of pressure, superconductivity is observed to onset above 11 GPa with a transition temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 that both increase with pressure up to 30 GPa, where they reach maximum values of 7 K and 4 T, respectively. Upon further pressure increase, Tc remains anomalously constant up to the highest achieved pressure. Conversely, the carrier concentration increases continuously with pressure, including …
We investigate pressure-induced structural changes to the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase of the low-dimensional Sc$_3$CoC$_4$ as a possible origin of its pressure-enhanced superconductivity. By means of cryogenic high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments we could reveal subtle, but significant structural differences between the low-temperature phase at ambient and elevated pressures. We could thus establish the structure of the superconducting phase of the title compound which interestingly still shows the main features of the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase. This …
We present in this paper the thermodynamics of superconducting PdH and PdD under pressure. We make use of a general method to calculate the thermodynamics under pressure within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. We have considered the crystal lattice to be zincblende taking into account the experimental evidence for both PdH and PdD at temperatures below 55 K. We have studied, in particular, the changes induced by pressure in the critical temperature, $T_c$, in the specific heat jump at $T_c$, in the energy gap at $T=0K$, in the deviation function $D(t)$ and in the isotope effect coefficient, $α$. …
High-temperature conventional superconductivity in hydrogen-rich materials under high pressure has been reportedly found in twelve different compounds in recent years. However, the experimental evidence on which these claims are based has recently been called into question. Here we discuss the measurement of trapped magnetic flux, that should establish definitively that these materials are indeed high-temperature superconductors. Its absence should confirm claims to the contrary.
Transition metal dichalcogenides host a wide variety of lattice and electronic structures, as well as corresponding exotic physical properties, especially under certain tuning conditions. Here, we are the first to report the observation of pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2, a charge density wave (CDW) - bearing layered transition-metal dichalcogenide that is metallic but not superconducting at ambient pressure. We find that its CDW state can be easily suppressed upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1 GPa. A superconducting state then emerges from the suppressed CDW state …
The high critical superconducting temperatures ($T_c$s) of metal hydride phases with clathrate-like hydrogen networks have generated great interest. Herein, we employ the Density Functional Theory-Chemical Pressure (DFT-CP) method to explain why certain electropositive elements adopt these structure types, whereas others distort the hydrogenic lattice, thereby decreasing the $T_c$. The progressive opening of the H$_{24}$ polyhedra in MH$_6$ phases is shown to arise from internal pressures exerted by large metal atoms, some of which may favor an even higher hydrogen content that loosens the met…
We have observed a strongly broadened Raman band of MgB2 that shows anomalously large pressure dependence of its frequency. This band and its pressure dependence can be interpreted as the E2g zone center phonon, which is strongly anharmonic because of coupling to electronic excitations. The pressure dependence of Tc was measured to 14 GPa in hydrostatic conditions and can be explained only when a substantial pressure dependence of the Hopfield parameter h=N(0)<I2>~(V0/V)^2.3(6)is taken into account.
We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements on superconducting Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs under pressure. At ambient pressure, Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition of the V moments at $T_{N}$ and becomes superconducting at $T_{c}<T_{N}$. As a function of pressure, $T_{N}$ initially decreases while $T_{c}$ increases. Surprisingly, once $T_{N}\approx T_{c}$ at 0.6~GPa, $T_{N}$ reverses its trend and increases together with $T_{c}$ suggesting that the static V magnetism is a prerequisite for superconductivity. We explain this cooperative coupling by a p…
The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest Tc ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this family of potential analogue to high-Tc cuprates. Pursuing a higher Tc is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with Tconset ~ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH2 in the topological chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil…
Superconducting and structural phase transitions in a pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 are studied under high pressure by x-ray diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements. A rich P-T phase diagram is obtained, which contains at least two phases with the ideal and slightly distorted pyrochlore structures. It is found that the transition between them is suppressed with increasing pressure and finally disappears at a critical pressure Pc = 3.5 GPa. Remarkable enhancements in the residual resistivity as well as the coefficient A of the AT 2 term in the resistivity are found around the critical p…
We report measurements of electrical resistivity under pressure to 5.8 GPa, magnetization to 6.7 GPa,and ac susceptibility to 7.1 GPa in KFe2As2. The previously reported change of slope in the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc(p) at a pressure p0=1.8 GPa is confirmed, and Tc(p) is found to be nearly constant above p0 up to 7.1 GPa. The T-p phase diagram is very sensitive to the pressure conditions as a consequence of the anisotropic uniaxial pressure dependence of Tc. Across p0, a change in the behavior of the upper critical field is revealed through a scalin…
This work investigates the high-pressure structure of freestanding superconducting ($T_{c}$ = 4.3\,K) boron doped diamond (BDD) and how it affects the electronic and vibrational properties using Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in the 0-30\,GPa range. High-pressure Raman scattering experiments revealed an abrupt change in the linear pressure coefficients and the grain boundary components undergo an irreversible phase change at 14\,GPa. We show that the blue shift in the pressure-dependent vibrational modes correlates with the negative pressure coefficient of $T_{c}$ in BDD. The analysi…
Similar to chemical doping, pressure produces and stabilizes new phases of known materials, whose properties may differ greatly from those of their standard counterparts. Here, by considering a series of LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O iron-pnictides synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions, we investigate the simultaneous effects of pressure and isoelectronic doping in the 1111 family. Results of numerous macro- and microscopic technique measurements, unambiguously show a radically different phase diagram for the pressure-grown materials, characterized by the lack of magnetic order an…
Recent experiments [Schaeffer 2015] have shown that lithium presents an extremely anomalous isotope effect in the 15-25 GPa pressure range. In this article we have calculated the anharmonic phonon dispersion of $\mathrm{^7Li}$ and $\mathrm{^6Li}$ under pressure, their superconducting transition temperatures, and the associated isotope effect. We have found a huge anharmonic renormalization of a transverse acoustic soft mode along $Γ$K in the fcc phase, the expected structure at the pressure range of interest. In fact, the anharmonic correction dynamically stabilizes the fcc phase above 25 GPa.…
Taking advantage of a novel multiprobe setup we have measured, on a unique sample, the ac-magnetic susceptibility, the resistivity, the ac-specific heat and the thermopower of the superconductor heavy fermion CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under pressure up to 5.1 GPa. At the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the Meissner signal corresponds to that expected for the sample volume and coincides with the specific heat jump and the resistive transition completion temperatures. Differing from previous observations, here the susceptibility measurements did not reveal any anomaly in the vicinity of t…
Even well below Tc, the heavy-fermion superconductor (U,Th)Be13 has a large linear term in its specific heat. We show that under uniaxial pressure, the linear heat capacity increases in magnitude by more than a factor of two. The change is reversible and suggests that the linear term is an intrinsic property of the material. In addition, we find no evidence of hysteresis or of latent heat in the low-temperature and low-pressure portion of the phase diagram, showing that all transitions in this region are second order.
The dependence of Tc on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been measured for an isotopically pure (11B) MgB2 sample in a helium-loaded diamond-anvil-cell to nearly 20 GPa. Tc decreases monotonically with pressure from 39.1 K at ambient pressure to 20.9 K at 19.2 GPa. The initial dependence is the same as that obtained earlier (dTc/dP = -1.11(2) K/GPa) on the same sample in a He-gas apparatus to 0.7 GPa. The observed pressure dependence Tc(P) to 20 GPa can be readily described in terms of simple lattice stiffening within standard phonon-mediated BCS superconductivity.
We report the superconducting transition temperature of 6Li between 16-26 GPa, the lightest system to exhibit superconductivity to date. The superconducting phase diagram of 6Li is compared to that of 7Li through simultaneous measurement in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) 1, 2. Below 21.5 GPa, Li exhibits a direct, but unusually large isotope effect, while between 21.5-26 GPa, lithium shows an inverse superconducting isotope effect. The unusual dependence of the superconducting phase diagram of lithium on its atomic mass provides evidence that quantum solid effects dominate the low temperature prop…
