We present the evolution of the initial (up to ~ 10 kbar) hydrostatic, pressure dependencies of Tc and of the ambient pressure jump in the heat capacity associated with the superconducting transition as a function of K - doping in the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 family of iron-based superconductors. The pressure derivatives show weak but distinct anomaly near x ~ 0.7. In the same concentration region Delta Cp at Tc deviates from the Delta Cp ~ T^3 scaling found for most BaFe2As2 - based superconductors. These results are consistent with a Lifshitz transition, and possible significant modification of the superconducting state, occurring near x ~ 0.7.
The dynamics of magnetic field penetration into thin-walled superconducting niobium cylinders is experimentally investigated. It is shown that magnetic field penetrates through the wall of a cylinder in a series of giant jumps with amplitude 10 - 20 Oe and duration of a few $μ$s. The jumps take place when the total current in the wall, not the current density, exceeds some critical value. In addition there are small jumps and/or smooth penetration, and their contribution can reach 20% of the total penetrating flux. It is demonstrated that the magnetic field inside the cylinder exhibits several…
An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of flux jumps and irreversible magnetization curves of mesoscopic Al superconducting rings. In the small magnetic field region the change of vorticity with magnetic field can be larger than unity. This behavior is connected with the existence of several metastable states of different vorticity. The intentional introduction of a defect in the ring has a large effect on the size of the flux jumps. Calculations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model allows us to explain the experimental results semi-quantitatively.
Measurements of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconducting transition in the iron-pnictide compounds revealed strong variation of its magnitude as a function of doping that is peaked near the optimal doping. We show that this behavior is direct manifestation of the coexistence between spin-density-wave and superconducting orders and the peak originates from thermal fluctuations of the spin-density-waves near the end point of the coexistence phase -- a tetracritical point. Thermal fluctuations result in a power-law dependence of the specific heat jump that is stronger than the contr…
We present detailed heat capacity measurements for Ba(Fe(1-x)Cox)2As2 and Ba(Fe(1-x)Nix)2As2 single crystals in the vicinity of the superconducting transitions. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), Delta Cp/Tc, changes by a factor ~ 10 across these series. The Delta Cp/T$ vs. Tc data of this work (together with the literature data for Ba(Fe0.939Co0.061)2As2, (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2, and (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2) scale well to a single log-log plot over two orders of magnitude in Delta Cp/Tc and over about an order of magnitude in Tc, giving Delta Cp/Tc ~ Tc^2.
We analyze the magnitude of the specific heat jump ΔC at the superconducting transition temperature T_c in the situation when superconductivity develops in the pre-existing antiferromagnetic phase. We show that ΔC/T_c differs from the BCS value and is peaked at the tri-critical point where this coexistence phase first emerges. Deeper in the magnetic phase, the onset of coexistence, T_c, drops and ΔC/T_c decreases, roughly as ΔC/T_c \propto T^2_c at intermediate T_c and exponentially at the lowest T_c, in agreement with the observed behavior of ΔC/T_c in iron-based superconductors.
By doing magnetization measurements during magnetic field sweeps on thin films of the new superconductor $MgB_2$, it is found that in a low temperature and low field region small flux jumps are taking place. This effect strongly suppresses the central magnetization peak leading to reduced nominal superconducting critical current density at low temperatures. A borderline for this effect to occur is determined on the field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram. It is suggested that the small size of the flux jumps in films is due to the higher density of small defects and the relatively easy thermal d…
The impurity effects on the transition temperature Tc and the isotope effect are examined in multiband superconductors with magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities, where the effect of Coulomb repulsion is considered. It is shown that an internal transition of the superconducting state is induced by impurity doping, and that the transition is accompanied by a jump of the isotope-effect coefficient alpha. In particular, the transition is illustrated in a system with two electron bands. In some special cases, extended Abrikosov and Gor'kov (AG) equations for Tc and the expressions of the isotope-eff…
Local magnetization measurements on 100 nm type-II superconducting Pb thin films show that flux penetration changes qualitatively with temperature. Small flux jumps at the lowest temperatures gradually increase in size, then disappear near T = 0.7Tc. Comparison with other experiments suggests that the avalanches correspond to dendritic flux protrusions. Reproducibility of the first flux jumps in a decreasing magnetic field indicates a role for defect structure in determining avalanches. We also find a temperature-independent final magnetization after flux jumps, analogous to the angle of repos…
Standard superconductors display a ubiquitous discontinuous jump in the electronic specific heat at the critical superconducting transition temperature. In a growing class of unconventional superconductors, however, a second order parameter component may get stabilized and produce a second heat capacity jump at a lower temperature, typically associated with the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. The splitting of the two specific heat discontinuities can be controlled by external perturbations such as chemical substitution, hydrostatic pressure, or uniaxial strain. We develop a the…
We present a systematic study of the electronic specific heat jump ($ΔC_{\rm el}$) at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconduc…
We present the evolution of the initial (up to ~ 10 kbar) hydrostatic, pressure dependencies of T_c and of the ambient pressure jump in the heat capacity associated with the superconducting transition as a function of Na - doping in the Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 family of iron-based superconductors. For Na concentrations 0.15 <= x <= 0.9, the jump in specific heat at T_c, Delta C_p, follows the Delta C_p ~ T^3 scaling found for most BaFe2As2 - based superconductors. Pressure dependencies are non-monotonic for x = 0.2 and x = 0.24. For other Na concentrations T_c decreases under pressure in almost linea…
Recently it was discovered that the jump in the specific heat at the superconducting transition in pnictide superconductors is proportional to the superconducting transition temperature to the third power, with the superconducting transition temperature varying from 2 to 25 Kelvin including underdoped and overdoped cases. Relying on standard scaling notions for the thermodynamics of strongly interacting quantum critical states, it is pointed out that this behavior is consistent with a normal state that is a quantum critical metal undergoing a pairing instability.
Angle dependent torque measurements have been carried out on the organic superconductor, kappa-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 at extremely low temperatures (25 - 300 mK). Magneto-thermal instabilities are observed in the form of abrupt magnetization (flux) jumps for magnetic field sweeps of 0 - 20 tesla. A fractal analysis of the flux jumps indicates that the instabilities do show a self similar structure with a fractal dimension varying between 1.15 - 1.6. The fractal structure of the flux jumps in our sample shows a stricking similarity to that of MgB2 thin film samples, in which magneto-optical experiments …
We theoretically analyze the effects of Cu/SC (superconductor) ratio, strain, and the ramp path on thermomagnetic instabilities of the superconducting coil. By considering the multi-filamentary structures, we find that a lower Cu/SC ratio leads to higher temperature peaks. The strain causes a higher frequency of flux jumps and higher voltage peaks. The temperatures recover to working temperature more difficultly and SC wires quench earlier in the presence of strain. For the jagged ramp cases, few flux jumps occur at the decreasing branch, whereas frequent flux jumps can be observed promptly wh…
Magneto-optical imaging is used to visualize vortex avalanches in MgB2 films at 4K. Avalanches ranging from 50 to 50000 vortices were detected. The size distribution function has a clear peak whose position moves towards larger sizes as the applied field increases. This field dependence as well as variation of flux density profile during an avalanche are well described by a proposed model assuming a thermal origin of the avalanches. The model is based on the adiabatic approach and takes into account nonlocal electrodynamics in thin superconductors. The threshold field for thermal avalanches is…
We report magnetization hysteresis measurements in the peak effect region of a very clean single crystal of superconducting 2H-NbSe$_2$ at temperatures very close to T$_c$(0). Through measurement of minor magnetization curves, we infer the equilibrium magnetization curve across the PE region. We observe a small first order like change in equilibrium magnetization across the peak effect. We relate this observation to the entropy change associated with the order-disorder transformation. We further note that the first order like change in the equilibrium magnetization observed in 2H-NbSe$_2$ is c…

Recent observations have revealed the emergence of an unusual normal phase when a magnetic flux threads an ultra-thin superconducting cylinder. Moreover, with increasing temperature, the resistance rises in a series of abrupt jumps. These phenomena are explained using a novel approach, which allows calculation of the resistance in the presence of amplitude and phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter, and at the same time introduces a local probe of the current and chemical potential. It is demonstrated that phase fluctuations lead to the sequential breakdown of local supercon…
Recent theoretical analysis of spatially-nonuniform modes of the thermomagnetic instability in superconductors [Phys. Rev. B 70, 224502 (2004)] is generalized to the case of a thin film in a perpendicular applied field. We solve the thermal diffusion and Maxwell equations taking into account nonlocal electrodynamics in the film and its thermal coupling to the substrate. The instability is found to develop in a nonuniform, fingering pattern if the background electric field, E, is high and the heat transfer coefficient to the substrate, h0, is small. Otherwise, the instability develops in a unif…
The discoveries of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond, silicon and silicon carbide renewed the interest in the ground states of charge-carrier doped wide-gap semiconductors. Recently, aluminium doping in silicon carbide successfully yielded a metallic phase from which at high aluminium concentrations superconductivity emerges. Here, we present a specific-heat study on superconducting aluminium-doped silicon carbide. We observe a clear jump anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature 1.5 K indicating that aluminium-doped silicon carbide is a bulk superconductor. An analy…
High-quality polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.75 was synthesized with a superconducting transition width less than 1 K, and the electronic behavior was systematically studied by transport and specific heat measurements. An obvious superconducting jump was witnessed, together with a very small normalized superconducting jump, which is much smaller than expected by the BCS theory. A strong temperature dependent Hall coefficient was found and attributed to the partial gapping of the Fermi surface up to the temperature of 160 K which was predicted and supported by the emergence of the pseudogap. The charg…
Even well below Tc, the heavy-fermion superconductor (U,Th)Be13 has a large linear term in its specific heat. We show that under uniaxial pressure, the linear heat capacity increases in magnitude by more than a factor of two. The change is reversible and suggests that the linear term is an intrinsic property of the material. In addition, we find no evidence of hysteresis or of latent heat in the low-temperature and low-pressure portion of the phase diagram, showing that all transitions in this region are second order.
A continuously monitored quantum system prepared in an excited state will decay to its ground state with an abrupt jump. The jump occurs stochastically on a characteristic time scale T1, the lifetime of the excited state. These quantum jumps, originally envisioned by Bohr, have been observed in trapped atoms and ions, single molecules, photons, and single electrons in cyclotrons. Here we report the first observation of quantum jumps in a macroscopic quantum system, in our case a superconducting "artificial atom" or quantum bit (qubit) coupled to a superconducting microwave cavity. We use a fas…
Heat capacities measured for Al45- and Al47- nanoclusters have reproducible jumps at ~ 200 K. These jumps are consistent with theoretical predictions that some clusters with highly degenerate electronic states near the Fermi level will undergo a transition into a high Tc superconducting state. An analysis based on a theoretical treatment of pairing in Al45- and Al47- agrees well with the experimental data in both the value of the critical temperature and in the size and width of the jumps in the heat capacity.
We present the first measurements of thermal signatures of the Little-Parks effect using a highly sensitive nanocalorimeter. Small variations of the heat capacity $C\_p$ of 2.5 millions of non interacting micrometer-sized superconducting rings threaded by a magnetic flux $Φ$ have been measured by attojoule calorimetry. This non-invasive method allows the measurement of thermodynamic properties -- and hence the probing of the energy levels -- of nanosystems without perturbing them electrically. It is observed that $C\_p$ is strongly influenced by the fluxoid quantization (Little-Parks effect) n…
We evaluate the rates of energy and phase relaxation of a superconducting qubit caused by stray photons with energy exceeding the threshold for breaking a Cooper pair. All channels of relaxation within this mechanism are associated with the change in the charge parity of the qubit, enabling the separation of the photon-assisted processes from other contributions to the relaxation rates. Among the signatures of the new mechanism is the same order of rates of the transitions in which a qubit looses or gains energy.
Taking advantage of a novel multiprobe setup we have measured, on a unique sample, the ac-magnetic susceptibility, the resistivity, the ac-specific heat and the thermopower of the superconductor heavy fermion CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under pressure up to 5.1 GPa. At the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the Meissner signal corresponds to that expected for the sample volume and coincides with the specific heat jump and the resistive transition completion temperatures. Differing from previous observations, here the susceptibility measurements did not reveal any anomaly in the vicinity of t…
Temperature and doping dependent tunneling spectroscopy on $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ single crystals has been investigated by using break-junction technique. The results provide direct evidence that the pseudogap persists into heavily overdoped regime, possibly in whole doping range of the superconducting phase. The gap value determined from the peak-to-peak of the conductance, $Δ_{p-p}$, exhibits a jump-like increase as $T$ is raised across the critical temperature. The magnitude of the jump, the pseudogap opening temperature and superconducting gap decrease with raising doping. The $Δ_{p-p}$ b…
The dense vortex matter structure and associated magnetization are calculated for type-II superconducting mesoscopic disks. The magnetization exhibits generically first-order phase transitions as the number of vortices changes by one and presents two well-defined regimes: A non-monotonous evolution of the magnitude of the magnetization jumps signals the presence of a vortex glass structure which is separated by a second-order phase transition at $H_{c2}$ from a condensed state of vortices (giant vortex) where the magnitude of the jumps changes monotonously. We compare our results with Hall mag…
A high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) superconductor is new category of highly disordered superconductors. Therefore, finding brand-new superconducting characteristics in the HEA-type superconductors would open new avenue to investigate the relationship between structural disorder and superconductivity. Here, we report on the remarkable broadening of specific heat jump near a superconducting transition tempreature (Tc) in transition-metal zirconides (TrZr2) with different mixing entropy (ΔSmix) at the Tr site. With increasing ΔSmix, the superconducting transition seen in specific heat became br…
In high-quality nanowires, quantum confinement of the transverse electron motion splits the band of single-electron states in a series of subbands. This changes in a qualitative way the scenario of the magnetic-field induced superconductor-to-normal transition. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a clean metallic cylindrical nanowire at zero temperature in a parallel magnetic field and find that for diameters D < 10-15 nm, this transition occurs as a cascade of subsequent jumps in the order parameter (this is opposed to the smooth second-order phase transition in the me…
The magnetization and magnetic torque of a high-quality single crystal of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ have been measured down to 0.1 K under a precise control of the magnetic-field orientation. When the magnetic field is applied exactly parallel to the $ab$ plane, a sharp magnetization jump $4πδM$ of $(0.74 \pm 0.15)$ G at the upper critical field $H_{{\rm c2},{ab}} \sim 15$ kOe with a field hysteresis of 100 Oe is observed at low temperatures, evidencing a first-order superconducting-normal transition. A strong magnetic torque appearing when $H$ is slightly tilted away from the $ab$ plane confirms an intri…
The strong power law behavior of the specific heat jump $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ ($ΔC/T_c \sim T_c ^α, α\approx 2$), first observed by Bud'ko, Ni, and Canfield (BNC)[1], has been confirmed with several families of the Fe-based superconducting compounds with a series of doping. We show here that this anomalous non-BCS behavior is an intrinsic property of the multiband superconducting state paired by a dominant interband interaction ($V_{inter} > V_{intra}$) reflecting the relation $\frac{Δ_h}{Δ_e} \sim \sqrt{\frac{N_e}{N_h}}$ near $T_c$, as in the $\pm$S-wave pairing state. Then this $ΔC$ vs. $T_c$ relat…
We report on a study of the superconducting order parameter thermodynamic fluctuations in $\mathrm{YBa}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_{7 - δ}$, $\mathrm{Bi}_{2}\mathrm{Sr}_{2}\mathrm{CaCu}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{8+ δ}$ and $\mathrm{KOs}_2\mathrm{O}_6$ compounds. A non-perturbative technique within the framework of the renormalized Gaussian approach is proposed. The essential features are reported (analytically and numerically) through Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model-based calculations which take into account both the dimension and the microscopic parameters of the system. By presenting a self-consistent approac…
We calculate angle-dependent heat capacity in a low magnetic field range on the basis of Kramer-Pesch approximation together with an electronic structure obtained by first-principles calculations to determine a superconducting gap function of (TMTSF)2ClO4 through its comparisons with experiments. The present comparative studies reveal that a nodal d-wave gap function consistently explains the experimental results for (TMTSF)2ClO4. Especially, it is emphasized that the observed unusual axis-asymmetry of the angle-dependence eliminates the possibility of s-wave and node-less d-wave functions. It…
Larkin and Ovchinnikov established that the viscous flow of magnetic flux quanta in current-biased superconductor films placed in a perpendicular magnetic field can lose stability due to a decrease in the vortex viscosity coefficient $η$ with increasing velocity of the vortices $v$. The dependence of $η$ on $v$ leads to a $nonlinear$ section in the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curve which ends at the flux-flow instability point with a voltage jump to a highly resistive state. At the same time, in contradistinction with the nonlinear conductivity regime, instability jumps often occur in $linear$ $…
The specific heat jump at a normal-superconducting phase transition in an anisotropic superconductor with nonmagnetic impurities is calculated within a weak-coupling mean field approximation. It is shown that its dependence on the impurity concentration is remarkably different for d-wave and (d+s)-wave states. This effect may be used as a test for the presence of an s-wave admixture in the cuprates.
The heat capacity of superconducting Na(x)CoO(2)*yH(2)O was measured and the data are discussed based on three different models: The thermodynamic Ginzburg-Landau model, the BCS theory, and a model including the effects of line nodes in the superconducting gap function. The electronic heat capacity is separated from the lattice contribution in a thermodynamically consistent way maintaining the entropy balance of superconducting and normal states at the critical temperature. It is shown that for a fully gapped superconductor the data can only be explained by a reduced (about 55 %) superconducti…
Heat capacity measurements were performed on recently discovered iron based layered superconductors, non doped LaFePO and fluorine doped LaFePO. A relatively large electronic heat capacity coefficient and a small normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 3.3 K were observed in LaFePO. LaFePO0.94F0.06 had a smaller electronic heat capacity coefficient and a larger normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 5.8 K. These values indicate that these compounds have strong electron electron correlation and magnetic spin fluctuation, which are the signatures of unconventional superconductivity mediated by spin…
Electronic heat capacity was calculated for a mesoscopically disordered s-wave superconductor treated as a spatial ensemble of domains with a continuously varying superconducting properties. The domains are assumed to have sizes larger than the coherence length. Each domain is characterized by a certain critical temperature. The averaging over the superconducting gap distribution leads to quadratic temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures, whereas its anomaly at the critical temperature is substantially smeared. The results explain well the heat capacity data for MgB$_{2…
We have investigated the ternary noncentrosymmetric superconductors TaXSi (X=Re, Ru) by magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. The samples crystallize in orthorhombic TiFeSi structure having superconducting transition Tc = 5.32 K and 3.91 K, for TaReSi and TaRuSi respectively. Specific heat measurements indicated an s-wave nature of both materials with a moderately coupled nature. However, a low value of specific heat jump and the concave nature of the upper critical field suggests a nontrivial superconducting gap.
A thorough characterization of many samples of the filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 is provided. We find that the double superconducting transition in the specific heat Tc1~1.89K and Tc2~1.72K tends to appear in samples with a large residual resistivity ratio, large specific heat jump at the superconducting transition and with the highest absolute value of the specific heat above Tc1. However, we present evidence which casts doubt on the intrinsic nature of the double superconducting transition. The ratio of the two specific heat jumps ΔC(Tc1)/ΔC(Tc2) shows a wide range of values on crys…
The specific-heat jump $ΔC$ at a critical temperature $T_c$ in an anisotropic superconductor containing both potential and spin-flip scatterers is calculated within a weak-coupling mean-field approximation. It is shown that the presence of even a small amount of spin-flip scatterers in the sample leads to a drastic change in the dependence of $ΔC$ on $T_c$ in a disordered $(d+s)$-wave or a strongly anisotropic s-wave superconductor. The implications for experimental tests for the presence of an s-wave admixture in the superconducting order parameter of high-$T_c$ superconductors are discussed.
Using numerical renormalization group we study thermodynamic properties of a magnetic impurity described by the Anderson impurity model in a superconducting host material described by the BCS Hamiltonian. When the Kondo temperature in the normal state, T_K, is comparable to the critical temperature of the superconducting transition, T_c, the magnetic doublet state may become degenerate with the Kondo singlet state, leading to a ln3 peak in the temperature dependence of the impurity contribution to the entropy. This entropy increase translates into an anomalous feature in the heat capacity whic…
We present local tunneling spectroscopy experiments in the superconducting and ferromagnetic phases of the reentrant superconductor ErRh$_4$B$_{4}$. The tunneling conductance curves jump from showing normal to superconducting features within a few mK close to the ferromagnetic transition temperature, with a clear hysteretic behavior. Within the ferromagnetic phase, we do not detect any superconducting correlations. Within the superconducting phase we find a peculiar V-shaped density of states at low energies, which is produced by the magnetically modulated phase that coexists with superconduct…
We use heat capacity measurements as a function of field rotation to identify the nodal gap structure of CeIrIn5 at pressures to 2.05 GPa, deep inside its superconducting dome. A four-fold oscillation in the heat capacity at 0.3 K is observed for all pressures but with its sign reversed between 1.50 and 0.90 GPa. On the basis of recent theoretical models for the field-angle dependent specific heat, all data, including the sign reversal, imply a d{x^2-y^2} order parameter with nodes along [110], which constrains theoretical models of the pairing mechanism in CeIrIn5.
We have measured the heat capacity of YBa2Cu3O6+d for 0.7<d<0.8 between 1.8 and 300K. It was found that doping dependences of specific heat jump and temperature of heat capacity jump contradict to the assumption of spatially homogeneous electronic density. The results suggest that the transition from 60K to 90K phase has a percolative nature and the structure of underdoped 60K phase can be considered as array of superconducting nanoclusters embedded in the insulating matrix.
A systematic treatment of the magnetic fluctuations effect on the properties of the normal-to-superconducting phase transition in a zero external magnetic field is given within the self-consistent approximation and the quasi-macroscopic Ginzburg-Landau model. New results for thin superconducting films are presented. Thermodynamic quantities having a direct experimental interest as the order parameter jump, latent heat, and specific heat are considered and numerically evaluated for bulk Al and thin Al films. The possibility for an experimental verification of the theoretical predictions is disc…
We study the phase diagram of spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov(FFLO) superconducting state using the Ginzburg-Landau(GL) free energy, derived from the microscopic Hamiltonian of the system, and notice that it has a very clear Lifshitz tricritical point. We find the specific heat jumps abruptly near the first-order line in the emergent phase diagram which is very similar to the recent experimental observation in layered organic superconductor. Comparison with experimental data allows us to obtain quantitative relations between the parameters of phenomenological free ener…
The effect of magnetic fluctuations on the free energy, the order parameter profile and the latent heat at the equilibrium point of the first order phase transition to superconducting state in thin films of type I superconductors is considered. The possibility for an experimental observation of the fluctuation change of the order of the superconducting phase transition is briefly discussed. Numerical data for the order parameter jump and the latent heat of Al films are presented for needs of experimental studies.
It is shown that the specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature in pnictide and cuprate superconductors is produced by ferroelastic fluctuations just below the transition temperature. The amplitude of the corresponding lattice distortion is estimated. It is shown that a contribution from ferroelastic fluctuations to the specific heat jump is also present in low-temperature superconductors.
We report the superconducting properties of the K$_{x}$WO$_{3}$ tetragonal tungsten bronze. The highest superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c}=2.1$K) was obtained for K$_{0.38}$WO$_{3}$. $T_{c}$ decreases linearly with increasing K content. Using the measured values for the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and the specific heat $C$, we estimate the orbital critical field $H_{c2}$(0), coherence length $ξ$(0), Debye temperature $Θ_{D}$ and coupling constant $λ_{ep}$. The magnitude of the specific heat jump at $T_{c}$ suggests that the K$_{x}$WO$_{3}$ tetragonal tungsten bronze is a weakly-…
We present heat capacity measurements on a series of superconducting Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ single crystals with different Cu content down to 600 mK and up to 1 T performed by ac microcalorimetry. The samples cover a large portion of the phase diagram from an underdoped to a slightly overdoped region with an increasing superconducting critical temperature and the charge density wave (CDW) order gradually suppressed. The electronic heat capacity as a function of normalized temperature $T/T_c$ shows no difference regardless of the concentration of copper, i.e., regardless of how much the CDW order is de…
A phenomenon of a periodic staircase of macroscopic jumps in the admitted magnetic field has been observed, as the magnitude of an externally applied magnetic field is smoothly increased or decreased upon a superconducting (SC) loop of type II niobium-titanium wire which is coated with a non-superconducting layer of copper. Large temperature spikes were observed to occur simultaneously with the jumps, suggesting brief transitions to the normal state, caused by en masse motions of Abrikosov vortices. An experiment that exploits this phenomenon to explore the global decoherence of a large superc…
We theoretically investigate the appearance of spatially modulated superconducting states in mesoscopic superconducting thin-wall cylinders in a magnetic field at low temperatures. Quantization of the electron motion around the circumference of the cylinder leads to a discontinuous evolution of the spatial modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the transition line T_c(H). We show that this discontinuity leads to the non-monotonic behavior of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconductivity as a function of temperature and field. We argue that this geometry provides an …
