We present analytical formulae for the first and second derivatives of the Helmholtz free energy of non-relativistic ideal Fermi-gas. Important thermodynamic quantities such as heat capacity, sound velocity, heat capacity ratio and others can be easily expressed through the derivatives. We demonstrate correct ideal Boltzmann gas and low--temperature Fermi-gas asymptotes and derive corrections to thermodynamic functions for these limiting cases. Numerical computations of thermodynamic properties of ideal Fermi-gas can be accurately performed using the developed freely available Python module ifg.
The equations of state for an ideal generalized gas, like an ideal quantum gas, are expressed in terms of power laws of the temperature. The reduction of an ideal generalized gas to an ideal classical case occurs when the characteristic empirical temperature exponents in the thermal equation of state and in the absolute temperature coincide in contrast to the merger of an ideal quantum gas with an ideal classical gas in the high temperature limit. A corollary to Carnot's theorem is proved asserting that the ratio of the work done over a cycle to the heat absorbed to increase the temperature at…
A generalized entropy arising in the context of superstatistics is obtained for an ideal gas. The curvature scalar associated to the thermodynamic space generated by this modified entropy is calculated using two formalisms of the geometric approach to thermodynamics. Using the curvature/interaction hypothesis of the geometric approach to thermodynamic geometry it is found that as a consequence of considering a generalized statistics, an effective interaction arises but the interaction is not enough to give a phase transition. This generalized entropy seems to be relevant in confinement or in s…
There is a long-standing question as to whether and to what extent it is possible to describe nonequilibrium systems in stationary states in terms of global thermodynamic functions. The positive answers have been obtained only for isothermal systems or systems with small temperature differences. We formulate thermodynamics of the stationary states of the ideal gas subjected to heat flow in the form of the zeroth, first, and second law. Surprisingly, the formal structure of steady state thermodynamics is the same as in equilibrium thermodynamics. We rigorously show that $U$ satisfies the follow…
We present a thermodynamic formulation for scale-invariant systems based on the principle of extreme information. We create an analogy between these systems and the well-known thermodynamics of gases and fluids, and study as a compelling case the non-interacting system -the scale-free ideal gas- presenting some empirical evidences of electoral results, city population and total cites of Physics journals that confirm its existence. The empirical class of universality known as Zipf's law is derived from first principles: we show that this special class of power law can be understood as the densi…
In a recent experiment, a Bose-Einstein condensate was trapped in an anharmonic potential which is well approximated by a harmonic and a quartic part. The condensate was set into such a fast rotation that the centrifugal force in the corotating frame overcompensates the harmonic part in the plane perpendicular to the rotation axis. Thus, the resulting trap potential became Mexican-hat shaped. We present an analysis for an ideal Bose gas which is confined in such an anharmonic rotating trap within a semiclassical approximation where we calculate the critical temperature, the condensate fraction…
We show that the recently discovered thermodynamic equivalence between noninteracting Bose and Fermi gases in two dimensions, and between one-dimensional Bose and Fermi systems with linear dispersion, both in the grand-canonical ensemble, are special cases of a larger class of equivalences of noninteracting systems having an energy-independent single-particle density of states. We also conjecture that the same equivalence will hold in the grand-canonical ensemble for any noninteracting quantum gas with a discrete ladder-type spectrum whenever $σΔ/ N k_{\rm B} T$ is small, where $N$ is the aver…
A Bose gas in an external potential is studied by means of the local density approximation. Analytical results are derived for the thermodynamic properties of an ideal Bose gas in a generic power-law trapping potential, and their dependence on the mutual interaction of atoms in the case of a non-ideal Bose gas.
Two kinds of recursive lattices with the same coordination number but different unit cells (2-D square and 3-D cube) are constructed and the antiferromagnetic Ising model is solved exactly on them to study the stable and metastable states. The Ising model with multi-particle interactions is designed to represent a monatomic system or an alloy. Two solutions of the model exhibit the crystallization of liquid, and the ideal glass transition of supercooled liquid respectively. Based on the solutions, the thermodynamics on both lattices was examined. In particular, the free energy, energy, and ent…
We construct the thermodynamic geometry of an ideal q-deformed boson and fermion gas. We investigate some thermodynamic properties such as the stability and statistical interaction. It will be shown that the statistical interaction of q-deformed boson gas is attractive, while it is repulsive for the q-deformed fermion one. Also, we will consider the singular point of the thermodynamic curvature to obtain some new results about the condensation of q-deformed bosons and show that there exist a finite critical phase transition temperature even in low dimensions. It is shown that the thermodynamic…
All current formulations of nonequilibrium thermodynamics of open chemical reaction networks rely on the assumption of non-interacting species. We develop a general theory which accounts for interactions between chemical species within a mean-field approach using activity coefficients. Thermodynamic consistency requires that rate equations do not obey to standard mass-action kinetics, but account for the interactions with concentration dependent kinetic constants. Many features of the ideal formulations are recovered. Crucially, the thermodynamic potential and the forces driving non-ideal chem…
We investigate perturbative thermodynamic geometry of nonextensive ideal Classical, Bose and Fermi gases. We show that the intrinsic statistical interaction of nonextensive Bose (Fermi) gas is attractive (repulsive) similar to the extensive case but the value of thermodynamic curvature is changed by nonextensive parameter. In contrary to the extensive ideal classical gas, the nonextensive one may be divided to two different regimes. According to deviation parameter of the system to the nonextensive case, one can find a special value of fugacity, $z^{*}$, where the sign of thermodynamic curvatur…
We consider the thermodynamic geometry of an ideal non-Abelian gas. We show that, for a certain value of the fractional parameter and at the relevant maximum value of fugacity, the thermodynamic curvature has a singular point. This indicates a condensation such as Bose-Einstein condensation for non-Abelian statistics and we work out the phase transition temperature in various dimensions.
We study the thermodynamical properties of Fermi vapors confined in a harmonic external potential. In the case of the ideal Fermi gas, we compare exact density profiles with their semiclassical approximation in the conditions of recent experiments. Then, we consider the phase-separation of a multi-component Fermi vapor. In particular, we analyze the phase-separation as a function of temperature, number of particles and scattering length. Finally, we discuss the effect of rotation on the stability and thermodynamics of the trapped vapors.
The ideal uniform two-dimensional (2D) Fermi and Bose gases are considered both in the thermodynamic limit and the finite case. We derive May's Theorem, viz. the correspondence between the internal energies of the Fermi and Bose gases in the thermodynamic limit. This results in both gases having the same heat capacity. However, as we shall show, the thermodynamic limit is never truly reached in two dimensions and so it is essential to consider finite-size effects. We show in an elementary manner that for the finite 2D Bose gas, a pseudo-Bose-Einstein condensate forms at low temperatures, incom…
Equation of state (EOS) describes the thermodynamic properties of substances. It has important applications in many fields such as power mechanics, geophysics, astrophysics, and detonation physics. Currently, most EOSs have been constructed using the ideal gas EOS as the base framework. However, this is inappropriate for the substances with high pressures or low temperatures that are far from the ideal gas state. Here we extract a concept of "ideal solid" that is symmetrical with ideal gas and propose its EOS. We verify that the ideal solid EOS represents the thermodynamic properties of the hi…
Thermodynamics of power means applies to an ideal quantum gas which may be nonextensive. Transition to an ideal classical gas occurs when the empirical temperature exponents of the internal energy and absolute temperature coalesce. Limiting processes are pure heat conduction and pure deformations. Largest and smallest mean final volumes occur for isothermal and adiabatic processes, respectively. The increment in the heat admits two integrating factors which yield conserved quantities for adiabatic processes. Energy-conserving equilibrations yield the largest final means possible, while the sec…
The property that power means are monotonically increasing functions of their order is shown to be the basis of the second laws not only for processes involving heat conduction but also for processes involving deformations. In an $L$-potentail equilibration the final state will be one of maximum entropy, while in an entropy equilibrium the final state will be one of minimum $L$. A metric space is connected with the power means, and the distance between means of different order is related to the Carnot efficiency. In the ideal classical gas limit, the average change in the entropy is shown to b…
We present an example counter to the widely-accepted concept on equilibrium states that "Any thermodynamic equilibrium state of two component systems is determined by specifying 4 thermodynamic variables that include at least 1 extensive variable." which is equivalent to Gibbs' phase rule. We demonstrate this fact by thought experiments on an A/B binary mixture where temperature, pressure and chemical potential of the A-species are chosen as the 3 intensive variables while the number of B-molecules is chosen as the 1 extensive variable. Our findings also apply to $M (>2)$-component systems.
We revisit the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process as the fundamental mathematical description of linear irreversible phenomena, with fluctuations, near an equilibrium. By identifying the underlying circulating dynamics in a stationary process as the natural generalization of classical conservative mechanics, a bridge between a family of OU processes with equilibrium fluctuations and thermodynamics is established through the celebrated Helmholtz theorem. The Helmholtz theorem provides an emergent macroscopic "equation of state" of the entire system, which exhibits a universal ideal thermodynamic b…
An english translation of the original work of Enrico Fermi on the quantization of the monoatomic ideal gas, is given in this paper. Fermi introduced here for the first time the statistical law obeyed by most of the particles in nature: Fermi-Dirac statistics. The formalism that he used is based on the quantization of the monoatomic ideal gas in a harmonic trap. This trappping configuration is similar to that used in current experiments on trapped Fermi gases.
By using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dilute binary Bose-Fermi mixture confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. For mixtures with an attractive Bose-Fermi interaction we find a sizable enhancement of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation with respect to the predictions for a pure interacting Bose gas. Conversely, the influence of the repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction is less pronounced. The possible relevance of our results in current experiments on trapped $^…
The Lorentz covariant classical and quantum statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of an ideal relativistic gas of bradyons (particles slower than light), luxons (particles moving with the speed of light) and tachyons (hypothetical particles faster than light) is discussed. The Lorentz covariant formulation is based on the preferred frame approach which among others enables consistent, free of paradoxes description of tachyons. The thermodynamic functions within the covariant approach are obtained both in classical and quantum case.
Thermodynamic properties of an ultracold Fermi gas in a harmonic trap are calculated within a local density approximation, using a conserving many-body formalism for the BCS to BEC crossover problem, which has been developed by Haussmann et al. [Phys. Rev. A 75, 023610 (2007)]. We focus on the unitary regime near a Feshbach resonance and determine the local density and entropy profiles and the global entropy S(E) as a function of the total energy E. Our results are in good agreement with both experimental data and previous analytical and numerical results for the thermodynamics of the unitary …
The influence of spatial dimensionality and particle-antiparticle pair production on the thermodynamic properties of the relativistic Fermi gas, at finite chemical potential, is studied. Resembling a kind of phase transition, qualitatively different behaviors of the thermodynamic susceptibilities, namely the isothermal compressibility and the specific heat, are markedly observed at different temperature regimes as function of the system dimensionality and of the rest mass of the particles. A minimum in the isothermal compressibility marks a characteristic temperature, in the range of tenths of…
The thermodynamic properties of two-component Fermi gases with divergent scattering length is investigated and the transition temperature for the emergence of a stable dimeric gas is obtained by a simple theoretical model where the unique property of the dimers (i.e. fermionic atom pairs) with divergent scattering length is considered. Below the transition temperature, through the investigation of the overall entropy for the mixture gas of fermionic atoms and dimers, we calculate the relation between the energy and temperature of the system. In the limit of zero temperature, based on the chemi…
We theoretically examine equilibrium properties of the harmonically trapped ideal Bose and Fermi gases in the quantum degeneracy regime. We analyze thermodynamic characteristics of gases with a finite number of atoms by means of the known semiclassical approach and perform comparison with exact numerical results. For a Fermi gas, we demonstrate deviations in the Fermi energy values originating from a discrete level structure and show that these are observable only for a small number of particles. For a Bose gas, we observe characteristic softening of phase transition features, which contrasts …
Thermodynamic length is a metric distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states that asymptotically bounds the dissipation induced by a finite time transformation of a thermodynamic system. By means of thermodynamic length, we first evaluate the departures from ideal to real gases in geometric thermodynamics with and without Legendre invariance. In particular, we investigate ideal and real gases in the Ruppeiner and geometrothermodynamic formalisms. Afterwards, we formulate a strategy to relate thermodynamic lengths to efficiency of thermodynamic systems in both the aforementioned framework…
We present the exact thermodynamics (isochores, isotherms, isobars, response functions) of a statistically interacting quantum gas in D dimensions. The results in D=1 are those of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for the nonlinear Schroedinger model, a gas with repulsive two-body contact potential. In all dimensions the ideal boson and fermion gases are recovered in the weak-coupling and strong-coupling limits, respectively. For all nonzero couplings ideal fermion gas behavior emerges for D>>1 and, in the limit D->infinity, a phase transition occurs at T>0. Significant deviations from ideal quan…
The thermodynamic properties of ideal quantum gases are derived solely from dimensional arguments, the Pauli principle and thermodynamic relations, without resorting to statistical mechanics.
We conduct a rigorous investigation into the thermodynamic instability of ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box, without assuming thermodynamic limit nor continuous approximation. Based on the exact expression of canonical partition function, we perform numerical computations up to the number of particles one million. We report that if the number of particles is equal to or greater than a certain critical value, which turns out to be 7616, the ideal Bose gas subject to Dirichlet boundary condition reveals a thermodynamic instability. Accordingly we demonstrate - for the first time - that, a s…
The effects of low dimensionality on the thermodynamics of a Fermi gas trapped by isotropic power law potentials are analyzed. Particular attention is given to different characteristic temperatures that emerge, at low dimensionality, in the thermodynamic functions of state and in the thermodynamic susceptibilities (isothermal compressibility and specific heat). An energy-entropy argument that physically favors the relevance of one of these characteristic temperatures, namely, the non vanishing temperature at which the chemical potential reaches the Fermi energy value, is presented. Such an arg…
We show that when the thermal wavelength is comparable to the spatial size of a system, thermodynamic observables like Pressure and Volume have quantum fluctuations that cannot be ignored. They are now represented by operators; conventional (classical) thermodynamics is no longer applicable. We continue the work in earlier papers where quantization rules for thermodynamics were developed by analogy with optics and mechanics, by working out explicitly the quantum theory of van der Waals gases. We find a wave equation satisfied by the thermodynamic wave function as well as solutions ({\em cohere…
The $q$-deformed statistics for fermions arising within the non-extensive thermostatistical formalism has been applied to the study of various quantum many-body systems recently. The aim of the present note is to point out some subtle difficulties presented by this approach in connection with the problem of thermodynamic consistency. Different possible ways to apply the $q$-deformed quantum distributions in a thermodynamically consistent way are considered.
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
The unitarity regime of the BCS-BEC crossover can be realized by diluting a system of two-component lattice fermions with an on-site attractive interaction. We perform a systematic-error-free finite-temperature simulations of this system by diagrammatic determinant Monte Carlo. The critical temperature in units of Fermi energy is found to be T_c / E_F = 0.152(7). We also report the behavior of the thermodynamic functions, and discuss the issues of thermometry of ultracold Fermi gases.
We have investigated experimentally the finite-temperature properties of a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of $^{87}$Rb atoms in a harmonic trap. Focusing primarily on condensed fraction and expansion energy, we measure unambiguous deviations from ideal-gas thermodynamics, and obtain good agreement with a Hartree-Fock description of the mixed cloud. Our results offer for the first time clear evidence of the mutual interaction between the condensed and thermal components. To probe the low-temperature region unaccessible to the usual time-of-flight technique, we use coherent Bragg scattering as a …
Nonadditive Tsallis $q$-statistics has successfully been applied for a plethora of systems in natural sciences and other branches of knowledge. Nevertheless, its foundations have been severely criticised by some authors based on the standard additive Boltzmann-Gibbs approach thereby remaining a quite controversial subject. In order to clarify some polemical concepts, the distribution function for an ideal gas with a finite number of point particles and its $q$-index are analytically determined. The two-particle correlation function is also derived. The degree of correlation diminishes continuo…
A numerical approach is presented which allows to calculate the equilibrium properties of Fermi systems which are both, strongly coupled and strongly degenerate. Based on a novel path integral representation of the many-particle density operator, quantum and spin effects are included. As an illustration, results for the pressure and energy of an electron-proton plasma are presented.
We study the thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions obeying the symmetric algebra and show that it can be built on the formalism of q-calculus. The entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if ordinary derivatives are replaced by an appropriate Jackson derivative. In this framework, we derive the most important thermodynamic functions describing the q-boson and q-fermion ideal gases in the thermodynamic limit. We also investigate the semi-classical limit and the low temperature regime and demonstrate that the nature of the q-deformation gives rise to pure quantum statistical …
We present exact and explicit results for the thermodynamic properties (isochores, isotherms, isobars, response functions, velocity of sound) of a quantum gas in dimensions D>=1 and with fractional exclusion statistics 0<=g<=1 connecting bosons (g=0) and fermions (g=1). In D=1 the results are equivalent to those of the Calogero-Sutherland model. Emphasis is given to the crossover between boson-like and fermion-like features, caused by aspects of the statistical interaction that mimic long-range attraction and short-range repulsion. The full isochoric heat capacity and the leading low-T term of…
We consider a two-species degenerate Fermi gas coupled by a diatomic Feshbach resonance. We show that the resulting superfluid can exhibit a form of coherent BEC-to-BCS oscillations in response to a nonadiabatic change in the system's parameters, such as for example a sudden shift in the position of the Feshbach resonance. In the narrow resonance limit, the resulting soliton-like collisionless dynamics can be calculated analytically. In equilibrium the thermodynamics can be accurately computed across the full range of BCS-BEC crossover, with corrections controlled by the ratio of the resonance…
We construct an information-geometric structure for chemical thermodynamics, applicable to a wide range of chemical reaction systems including non-ideal and open systems. For this purpose, we explicitly construct dual affine coordinate systems, which completely designate an information-geometric structure, using the extent of reactions and the affinities of reactions as coordinates on a linearly-constrained space of amounts of substances. The resulting structure induces a metric and a divergence (a function of two distributions of amounts), both expressed with chemical potentials. These quanti…
An ideal Maxwell-Boltzmann gas confined in various rectangular nano domains is considered under quantum size effects. Thermodynamic quantities are calculated from their relations with partition function which consists of triple infinite summations over momentum states in each direction. To get analytical expressions, summations are converted to integrals for macro systems by continuum approximation which fails at nanoscales. To avoid both from the numerical calculation of summations and the failure of their integral approximations at nanoscale, a method which gives an analytical expression for…
For the ideal Fermi gas that fills a quantum well confined by two parallel planes, there are calculated the thermodynamic characteristics in general form for arbitrary temperatures, namely: the thermodynamic potential, energy, entropy, equations of state, heat capacities and compressibilities. The distance between planes is considered as an additional thermodynamic variable. Owing to the anisotropy, the pressure of the Fermi gas along and transverse to the planes is different, so that the system is characterized by two equations of state and a set of different heat capacities. Limiting cases o…
Ultracold three-component atomic Fermi gases in one dimension are expected to exhibit rich physics due to the presence of trions and different pairing states. Quantum phase transitions from the trion state into a paired phase and a normal Fermi liquid occur at zero temperature. We derive the analytical thermodynamics of strongly attractive three-component one-dimensional fermions with SU(3) symmetry via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method in unequal Zeeman splitting fields $H_1$ and $H_2$. We find explicitly that for low temperature the system acts like either a two-component or a three-comp…
We consider a gas of fermions with non-zero spin at temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$. We show that if the range of the interparticle interaction is small compared to the mean particle distance, the thermodynamic pressure differs to leading order from the corresponding expression for non-interacting particles by a term proportional to the scattering length of the interparticle interaction. This is true for any repulsive interaction, including hard cores. The result is uniform in the temperature as long as $T$ is of the same order as the Fermi temperature, or smaller.
Finite-time thermodynamics provides the means to revisit ideal thermodynamic equilibrium processes in the light of reality and investigate the energetic "price of haste", i.e. the consequences of carrying out a process in finite time, when perfect equilibrium cannot be awaited due to economic reasons or the nature of the process. Employing the formalism of geometric thermodynamics, a lower bound on the energy dissipated during a process is derived from the thermodynamic length of that process. The notion of length is hereby defined via a metric structure on the space of equilibrium thermodynam…
