We introduce a new Banach algebra ${\mathcal A}({\mathbb C}_+)$ of bounded analytic functions on ${\mathbb C}_+=\{z\in{\mathbb C}\, :\, {\rm Re}(z)>0\}$ which is an analytic version of the Figa-Talamenca-Herz algebras on ${\mathbb R}$. Then we prove that the negative generator $A$ of any bounded $C_0$-semigroup on Hilbert space $H$ admits a bounded (natural) functional calculus $ρ_A\colon {\mathcal A}({\mathbb C}_+)\to B(H)$. We prove that this is an improvement of the bounded functional calculus ${\mathcal B}({\mathbb C}_+)\to B(H)$ recently devised by Batty-Gomilko-Tomilov on a certain Besov algebra ${\mathcal B}({\mathbb C}_+)$ of analytic functions on ${\mathbb C}_+$, by showing that ${\mathcal B}({\mathbb C}_+)\subset {\mathcal A}({\mathbb C}_+)$ and ${\mathcal B}({\mathbb C}_+)\not= {\mathcal A}({\mathbb C}_+)$. In the Banach space setting, we give similar results for negative generators of $γ$-bounded $C_0$-semigroups. The study of ${\mathcal A}({\mathbb C}_+)$ requires to deal with Fourier multipliers on the Hardy space $H^1({\mathbb R})\subset L^1({\mathbb R})$ of analytic functions.
We show that a bounded analytic semigroup on an $L_p$-space has a bounded $H^{\infty}(Σ_φ)$-calculus for some $φ< \fracπ{2}$ if and only if the semigroup can be obtained, after restricting to invariant subspaces, factorizing through invariant subspaces and similarity transforms, from a bounded analytic semigroup on some bigger $L_p$-space which is positive and contractive on the real line.
In this short note we use ideas from systems theory to define a functional calculus for infinitesimal generators of strongly continuous semigroups on a Hilbert space. Among others, we show how this leads to new proofs of (known) results in functional calculus.
We construct a new bounded functional calculus for the generators of bounded semigroups on Hilbert spaces and generators of bounded holomorphic semigroups on Banach spaces. The calculus is a natural (and strict) extension of the classical Hille-Phillips functional calculus, and it is compatible with the other well-known functional calculi. It satisfies the standard properties of functional calculi, provides a unified and direct approach to a number of norm-estimates in the literature, and allows improvements of some of them.
We prove that the negative infinitesimal generator $L$ of a semigroup of positive contractions on $L^\infty$ has a bounded $H^\infty(S_η^0)$-calculus on the associated Poisson semigroup-BMO space for any angle $η>π/2$, provided the semigroup satisfies Bakry-Emry's $Γ_2 $ criterion. Our arguments only rely on the properties of the underlying semigroup and works well in the noncommutative setting. A key ingredient of our argument is a quasi monotone property for the subordinated semigroup $T_{t,α}=e^{-tL^α},0<α<1$, that is proved in the first half of the article.
In this work we investigate semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. We introduce noncommutative square functions and their connection to sectoriality, variants of Rademacher sectoriality, and $H^\infty$ functional calculus. We discuss several examples of noncommutative diffusion semigroups. This includes Schur multipliers, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups, and the noncommutative Poisson semigroup on free groups.
We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
The functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arisen in the calculus is given, and in the one-dimensional case the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
The multidimensional functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the spectral mapping theorems for joint spectra have been stated, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arises in the calculus is given, and the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
Let $0<α\leq 1$. We prove that a $α$-Kreiss bounded $C_0$ semigroup $(T_t)_{t \ge 0}$ on a Hilbert space has asymptotics $||T_t|| = O\big(t^α/\sqrt{log(t)}\big)$. Then, we give an application to perturbed wave equation.
The infinitesimal generator $A$ of a strongly continuous semigroup on a Hilbert space is assumed to satisfy that $B_β:=A-β$ is a sectorial operator of angle less than $\fracπ{2}$ for some $β\geq 0$. If $B_β$ is dissipative in some equivalent scalar product then the Naimark-Arocena Representation Theorem is applied to obtain a Kre\uın space unitary dilation of the semigroup.
We describe some connections between three different fields: combinatorics (umbral calculus), functional analysis (linear functionals and operators) and harmonic analysis (convolutions on group-like structures). Systematic usage of cancellative semigroup, their convolution algebras, and tokens between them provides a common language for description of objects from these three fields. Keywords: cancellative semigroups, umbral calculus, harmonic analysis, token, convolution algebra, integral transform
We discuss the notion of $γ$-$H^{\infty}$-bounded calculus, strong $γ$-$m$-$H^{\infty}$-bounded calculus on half-plane and weak-$γ$-Gomilko-Shi-Feng condition and give a connection between them. Then we state a characterization of generation of $γ$-bounded $C_0$-semigroup in $K$-convex space, which leads to a version of Gearhart-Prüss on $K$-convex space.
We extend and deepen the theory of functional calculus for semigroup generators, based on the algebra $\mathcal B$ of analytic Besov functions, which we initiated in a previous paper. In particular, we show that our construction of the calculus is optimal in several natural senses. Moreover, we clarify the structure of $\mathcal B$ and identify several important subspaces in practical terms. This leads to new spectral mapping theorems for operator semigroups and to wide generalisations of a number of basic results from semigroup theory.
The geometry of spaces with indefinite inner product, known also as Krein spaces, is a basic tool for developing Operator Theory therein. In the present paper we establish a link between this geometry and the algebraic theory of *-semigroups. It goes via the positive definite functions and related to them reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Our concern is in describing properties of elements of the semigroup which determine shift operators which serve as Pontryagin fundamental symmetries
We prove that every generator of a symmetric contraction semigroup on a $σ$-finite measure space admits, for $1<p<\infty$, a Hörmander-type holomorphic functional calculus on $L^p$ in the sector of angle $ϕ^*_p=\arcsin|1-2/p|$. The obtained angle is optimal.
Suppose that S is a left amenable semitopological semigroup. We prove that if ${T_{t}: t \in S}$ is a uniformly k-Lipschitzian semigroup on a bounded closed and convex subset C of a Hilbert space and $k<\sqrt{2}$, then the set of fixed points of this semigroup is a Hölder continuous retract of C. This gives a qualitative complement to the Ishihara-Takahashi fixed point existence theorem.
This paper provides sharp lower estimates near the origin for the functional calculus $F(-uA)$ of a generator $A$ of an operator semigroup defined on a sector; here $F$ is given as the Fourier--Borel transform of an analytic functional. The results are linked to the existence of an identity element in the Banach algebra generated by the semigroup. Both the quasinilpotent and non-quasinilpotent cases are considered, and sharp results are proved extending many in the literature.
We analyse $C_0$-semigroups of contractive operators on real-valued $L^p$-spaces for $p \not= 2$ and on other classes of non-Hilbert spaces. We show that, under some regularity assumptions on the semigroup, the geometry of the unit ball of those spaces forces the semigroup's generator to have only trivial (point) spectrum on the imaginary axis. This has interesting consequences for the asymptotic behaviour as $t \to \infty$. For example, we can show that a contractive and eventually norm continuous $C_0$-semigroup on a real-valued $L^p$-space automatically converges strongly if $p \not\in \{1,…
This paper provides sharp lower estimates near the origin for the functional calculus $F(-uA)$ of a generator $A$ of an operator semigroup defined on the (strictly) positive real line; here $F$ is given as the Laplace transform of a measure or distribution. The results are linked to the existence of an identity element or an exhaustive sequence of idempotents in the Banach algebra generated by the semigroup. Both the quasinilpotent and non-quasinilpotent cases are considered, and sharp results are proved extending many in the literature.
Let $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be a markovian (resp. submarkovian) semigroup on some $σ$-finite measure space $(Ω,μ)$. We prove that its negative generator $A$ has a bounded $H^\infty(Σ_θ)$ calculus on the weighted space $L^2(Ω,wdμ)$ as long as the weight $w : Ω\to (0,\infty)$ has finite characteristic defined by $Q^A_2(w) = \sup_{t > 0} \left\| T_t(w) T_t \left(w^{-1} \right) \right\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$ (resp. by a variant for submarkovian semigroups). Some additional technical conditions on the semigroup have to be imposed and their validity in examples is discussed. Any angle $θ> \fracπ{2}$ is admissib…
In this paper we develop a functional calculus for a countable system of generators of contraction strongly continuous semigroups. As a symbol class of such calculus we use the algebra of polynomial tempered distributions. We prove a differential property of constructed calculus and describe its image with the help of the commutant of polynomial shift semigroup. As an application, we consider a function of countable set of second derivative operators.
Let $\{T(t)\}_{t\ge 0}$ be a $C_0$-semigroup on a separable Hilbert space $H$. We characterize that $T(t)$ is an $m$-isometry for every $t$ in terms that the mapping $t\in \Bbb R^+ \rightarrow \|T(t)x\|^2$ is a polynomial of degree less than $m$ for each $x\in H$. This fact is used to study $m$-isometric right translation semigroup on weighted $L^p$-spaces. We characterize the above property in terms of conditions on the infinitesimal generator operator or in terms of the cogenerator operator of $\{ T(t)\}_{t\geq 0}$. Moreover, we prove that a non-unitary $2$-isometry on a Hilbert space satisf…
In this article we apply a recently established transference principle in order to obtain the boundedness of certain functional calculi for semigroup generators. In particular, it is proved that if $-A$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup on a Hilbert space, then for each $τ>0$ the operator $A$ has a bounded calculus for the closed ideal of bounded holomorphic functions on a (sufficiently large) right half-plane that satisfy $f(z)=O(e^{-τ\textrm{Re}(z)})$ as $|z|\rightarrow \infty$. The bound of this calculus grows at most logarithmically as $τ\searrow 0$. As a consequence, $f(A)$ is a bounded operato…
Area integral functions are introduced for sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces. We establish the equivalence relationship between the square and area integral functions. This immediately extends McIntosh/Yagi's results on $H^{\8}$ functional calculus of sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces to the case when the square functions are replaced by the area integral functions.
Let $P$ be a generalized laplacian on $R^{2n+1}$. It is known that $P$ is the generating functional of semigroups of measures $μ_{t}$ on the Heisenberg group $H^{n}$ and $ν_{t}$ on the Abelian group $R^{2n+1}$. Under some smoothness and growth conditions on the functional $P$ expressed in terms of its Abelian Fourier transform $\widehat{P}$ we show that the semigroup $μ_{t}$ is a kind of perturbation of the semigroup $ν_{t}$. More precisely, we give pointwise estimates for the difference of the densities of the measures $μ_{t}$ and $ν_{t}$. As a consequence we get a description of the asymptot…
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is given. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated, and several examples are considered.
This paper considers universal Hilbert space operators in the sense of Rota, and gives criteria for universality of semigroups in the context of uniformly continuous semigroups and contraction semigroups. Specific examples are given. Universal semigroups provide models for these classes of semigroups: following a line of research initiated by Shimorin, models for concave semigroups are developed, in terms of shifts on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is considered. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated. In particular, the multiplication rule and the composition rule are proved. Several examples are given.
We investigate the boundedness of the $H^\infty$-calculus by estimating the bound $b(\varepsilon)$ of the mapping $H^{\infty}\rightarrow \mathcal{B}(X)$: $f\mapsto f(A)T(\varepsilon)$ for $\varepsilon$ near zero. Here, $-A$ generates the analytic semigroup $T$ and $H^{\infty}$ is the space of bounded analytic functions on a domain strictly containing the spectrum of $A$. We show that $b(\varepsilon)=\mathcal{O}(|\log\varepsilon|)$ in general, whereas $b(\varepsilon)=\mathcal{O}(1)$ for bounded calculi. This generalizes a result by Vitse and complements work by Haase and Rozendaal for non-analy…
For a sequence of uniformly bounded, degenerate semigroups on a Hilbert space, we compare various types of convergences to a limit semigroup. Among others, we show that convergence of the semigroups, or of the resolvents of the generators, in the weak operator topology, in the strong operator topology or in certain integral norms are equivalent under certain natural assumptions which are frequently met in applications.
We show that pure strongly continuous semigroups of adjointable isometries on a Hilbert C*-module are standard right shifts. By counter examples, we illustrate that the analogy of this result with the classical result on Hilbert spaces by Sz.-Nagy, cannot be improved further to understand arbitrary isometry semigroups of isometries in the classical way.
Let $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ be a strongly continuous semigroup of positive contractions on $L_p(X,μ)$ with $1<p<\infty$. Let $E$ be a UMD Banach lattice of measurable functions on another measure space $(Ω,ν)$. For $f\in L_p(X; E)$ define $$\mathcal M(f)(x, ω)=\sup_{t>0}\frac1t\Big|\int_0^tT_s(f(\cdot,ω))(x)ds\Big|,\quad (x,ω)\in X\timesΩ.$$ Then the following maximal ergodic inequality holds $$\big\|\mathcal M(f)\big\|_{L_p(X; E)}\lesssim \big\|f\big\|_{L_p(X; E)},\quad f\in L_p(X; E).$$ If the semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ is additionally assumed to be analytic, then $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ extends to an analyt…
This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction $T$ with a tuple $T=(T_1, \dots, T_d)$ of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$.
We prove that for every semigroup of Schwarz maps on the von~Neumann algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space which has a subinvariant faithful normal state there exists an associated semigroup of contractions on the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators of the Hilbert space. Moreover, we show that if the original semigroup is weak$^*$ continuous then the associated semigroup is strongly continuous. We introduce the notion of the extended generator of a semigroup on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space with respect to an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space. We describe th…
Given a Hilbert space and the generator $A$ of a strongly continuous, exponentially stable, semigroup on this Hilbert space. For any $g(-s) \in {\mathcal H}_{\infty}$ we show that there exists an infinite-time admissible output operator $g(A)$. If $g$ is rational, then this operator is bounded, and equals the "normal" definition of $g(A)$. In particular, when $g(s)=1/(s + α)$, $ α\in {\mathbb C}_0^+$, then this admissible output operator equals $(αI - A)^{-1}$. Although in general $g(A)$ may be unbounded, we always have that $g(A)$ multiplied by the semigroup is a bounded operator for every (s…
This paper studies how differentiable representations of certain subsemigroups of the Weyl-Heisenberg group may be obtained in suitably constructed rigged Hilbert spaces. These semigroup representations are induced from a continuous unitary representation of the Weyl-Heisenberg group in a Hilbert space. Aspects of the rigged Hilbert space formulation of time asymmetric quantum mechanics are also investigated within the context of the results developed here.
In this paper, we introduce a Weyl functional calculus $a \mapsto a(Q,P)$ for the position and momentum operators $Q$ and $P$ associated with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $ L = -Δ+ x\cdot \nabla$, and give a simple criterion for restricted $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of operators in this functional calculus. The analysis of this non-commutative functional calculus is simpler than the analysis of the functional calculus of $L$. It allows us to recover, unify, and extend, old and new results concerning the boundedness of $\exp(-zL)$ as an operator from $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,γ_α)$ to $L^q(\mathbb{R}^d…
In this paper we study the robustness of strong stability of a discrete semigroup on a Hilbert space under bounded finite rank perturbations. As the main result we characterize classes of perturbations preserving the strong stability of the semigroup.
We obtain estimate of the exponential decay rate of semigroup associated with second order linear differential equation $u"+Du'+Au=0$ in Hilbert space. We assume that $A$ is a selfadjoint positive definite operator, $D$ is an accretive sectorial operator and $\Ree D\geqδA$, $δ>0$. We obtain a location of the spectrum of a pencil associated with linear differential equation.
The goal of this article is to develop a theory for direct integrals of $C_0$-semigroups on Hilbert spaces parallel to the recent approach by Lachowicz and Moszyński for direct sums of Banach spaces, diagonal operators, and semigroups. In it we deal with the existence and characterisation of semigroups, asymptotic rates, and questions of decomposability.
Let $A$ be a simple C*-algebra of stable rank one and let $p$ and $q$ be two $σ$-compact open projections. It is proved that there is a continuous path of unitaries in ${\tilde A}$ which connects open sub-projections of $p$ which is compactly contained in $p$ to those in $q.$ It is also shown that every Hilbert module is projective in the category whose morphisms are bounded module maps with adjoints. A discussion of projective Hilbert modules (whose morphisms are bounded module maps) is also given.
Let A be a commutative Banach algebra such that uA = {0} for u $\in$ A \ {0} which possesses dense principal ideals. The purpose of the paper is to give a general framework to define F (--$λ$1$Δ$T 1 ,. .. , --$λ$ k $Δ$T k) where F belongs to a natural class of holomorphic functions defined on suitable open subsets of C k containing the "Arveson spectrum" of (--$λ$1$Δ$T 1 ,. .. , --$λ$ k $Δ$T k), where $Δ$T 1 ,. .. , $Δ$T k are the infinitesimal generators of commuting one-parameter semigroups of multipliers on A belonging to one of the following classes (1) The class of strongly continous semi…
We consider stochastic equations in Hilbert spaces with singular drift in the framework of [Da Prato, Röckner, PTRF 2002]. We prove a Harnack inequality (in the sense of [Wang, PTRF 1997]) for its transition semigroup and exploit its consequences. In particular, we prove regularizing and ultraboundedness properties of the transition semigroup as well as that the corresponding Kolmogorov operator has at most one infinitesimally invariant measure $μ$ (satisfying some mild integrability conditions). Finally, we prove existence of such a measure $μ$ for non-continuous drifts.
We consider Banach spaces equipped with a set of strongly continuous bounded semigroups satisfying certain conditions. Using these semigroups we introduce an analog of a modulus of continuity and define analogs of Besov norms. A generalization of a classical interpolation theorem is proven in which the role of Sobolev spaces is played by subspaces defined in terms of infinitesimal operators of these semigroups. We show that our assumptions about a given set of semigroups are satisfied in the case of a strongly continuous bounded representation of a Lie group. In the case of a unitary represent…
We study bounded holomorphic functional calculus for nonsymmetric infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators ${\mathscr L}$. We prove that if $-{\mathscr L}$ generates an analytic semigroup on $L^{2}(γ_{\infty})$, then ${\mathscr L}$ has bounded holomorphic functional calculus on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$, $1<r<\infty$, in any sector of angle $θ>θ^{*}_{r}$, where $γ_{\infty}$ is the associated invariant measure and $θ^{*}_{r}$ the sectoriality angle of ${\mathscr L}$ on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$. The angle $θ^{*}_{r}$ is optimal. In particular our result applies to any nondegenerate finite dimensio…
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_d$ be a $d$-tuple of commuting dissipative operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Using the theory of operator vessels and their associated systems, we give a construction of a dilation of the multi-parameter semigroup of contractions on $\mathcal{H}$ given by $e^{i \sum_{j=1}^d t_j A_j}$.
The paper deals with multidimensional Bochner-Phillips functional calculus. In the previous paper by the author bounded perturbations of Bernstein functions of several commuting semigroup generators on Banach spaces where considered, conditions for Lipschitzness and estimates for the norm of commutators of such functions where proved. Also in the one-dimensional case the Frechet differentiability of Bernstein functions of semigroup generators on Banach spaces where proved and a generalization of Livschits-Kreĭn trace formula derived. The aim of the present paper is to prove the Frechet differe…
We investigate rates of decay for $C_0$-semigroups on Hilbert spaces under assumptions on the resolvent growth of the semigroup generator. Our main results show that one obtains the best possible estimate on the rate of decay, that is to say an upper bound which is also known to be a lower bound, under a comparatively mild assumption on the growth behaviour. This extends several statements obtained by Batty, Chill and Tomilov (J. Eur. Math. Soc., vol. 18(4), pp. 853-929, 2016). In fact, for a large class of semigroups our condition is not only sufficient but also necessary for this optimal est…
The purpose of this paper is to revisit previous works of the author with J. Sjöstrand (2010--2021) proved in the Hilbert case by considering the Banach case at the light of a paper by Y.~Latushkin and V.~Yurov (2013).
Families of quasi-permutable normal operators in octonion Hilbert spaces are investigated. Their spectra are studied. Multiparameter semigroups of such operators are considered. A non-associative analog of Stone's theorem is proved.
A well-known result of W. Ray asserts that if $C$ is an unbounded convex subset of a Hilbert space, then there is a nonexpansive mapping $T$: $C\to C$ that has no fixed point. In this paper we establish some common fixed point properties for a semitopological semigroup $S$ of nonexpansive mappings acting on a closed convex subset $C$ of a Hilbert space, assuming that there is a point $c\in C$ with a bounded orbit and assuming that certain subspace of $C_b(S)$ has a left invariant mean. Left invariant mean (or amenability) is an important notion in harmonic analysis of semigroups and groups int…
