In this paper, we present a novel local and parallel two-grid finite element scheme for solving the Stokes equations, and rigorously establish its a priori error estimates. The scheme admits simultaneously small scales of subproblems and distances between subdomains and its expansions, and hence can be expandable. Based on the a priori error estimates, we provide a corresponding iterative scheme with suitable iteration number. The resulting iterative scheme can reach the optimal convergence orders within specific two-grid iterations ($O(|\ln H|^2)$ in 2-D and $O(|\ln H|)$ in 3-D) if the coarse mesh size $H$ and the fine mesh size $h$ are properly chosen. Finally, some numerical tests including 2-D and 3-D cases are carried out to verify our theoretical results.
In this paper, we propose two novel Robin-type domain decomposition methods based on the two-grid techniques for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system. Our schemes firstly adopt the existing Robin-type domain decomposition algorithm to obtain the coarse grid approximate solutions. Then two modified domain decomposition methods are further constructed on the fine grid by utilizing the framework of two-grid methods to enhance computational efficiency, via replacing some interface terms by the coarse grid information. The natural idea of using the two-grid frame to optimize the domain decomposition met…
Robust superconvergence analysis of physics-preserving RMAC scheme for the Stokes and Navier--Stokes equations on non-uniform grids at high Reynolds numbers
A discontinuous viscosity coefficient makes the jump conditions of the velocity and normal stress coupled together, which brings great challenges to some commonly used numerical methods to obtain accurate solutions. To overcome the difficulties, a kernel free boundary integral (KFBI) method combined with a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) scheme is developed to solve the two-phase Stokes problems with discontinuous viscosity. The main idea is to reformulate the two-phase Stokes problem into a single-fluid Stokes problem by using boundary integral equations and then evaluate the boundary integral…
The present paper is focused on the proof of the convergence of the discrete implicit Marker-and-Cell (MAC) scheme for time-dependent Navier--Stokes equations with variable density and variable viscosity. The problem is completed with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and is discretized according to a non-uniform Cartesian grid. A priori-estimates on the unknowns are obtained, and along with a topological degree argument they lead to the existence of a solution of the discrete scheme at each time step. We conclude with the proof of the convergence of the scheme toward the continuous pr…

In this work, we propose a local Fourier analysis for multigrid methods with coarsening by a factor of three for the staggered finite-difference method applied to the Stokes equations. In [21], local Fourier analysis has been applied to a mass-based Braess-Sarazin relaxation, a mass-based $σ$-Uzawa relaxation, and a mass-based distributive relaxation, with standard coarsening on staggered grids for the Stokes equations. Here, we consider multigrid methods with coarsening by three for these relaxation schemes. We derive theoretically optimal smoothing factors for this coarsening strategy. The o…
This paper considers the discretization of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with the family of inf-sup stabilized Scott-Vogelius pairs recently introduced in [John/Li/Merdon/Rui, arXiv:2206.01242, 2022] for the Stokes problem. Therein, the velocity space is obtained by enriching the H^1-conforming Lagrange element space with some H(div)-conforming Raviart-Thomas functions, such that the divergence constraint is satisfied exactly. In these methods arbitrary shape-regular simplicial grids can be used. In the present paper two alternatives for discretizing the convective terms are consi…

We present a priori and superconvergence error estimates of mixed finite element methods for the pseudostress-velocity formulation of the Oseen equation. In particular, we derive superconvergence estimates for the velocity and a priori error estimates under unstructured grids, and obtain superconvergence results for the pseudostress under certain structured grids. A variety of numerical experiments validate the theoretical results and illustrate the effectiveness of the superconvergent recovery-based adaptive mesh refinement. It is also numerically shown that the proposed postprocessing yields…
In this paper we develop a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer problems coupled with the \Red{Beavers-Joseph-Saffman} conditions. The method is defined by imposing staggered continuity for all the variables involved and the interface conditions are enforced by switching the roles of the variables met on the interface, which eliminate the hassle of introducing additional variables. This method can be flexibly applied to rough grids such as the highly distorted grids and the polygonal grids. In addition, the method allows nonmatching grids on the interfac…
The immersed boundary method is a numerical and mathematical formulation for solving fluid-structure interaction problems. It relies on solving fluid equations on an Eulerian fluid grid and interpolating the resulting velocity back onto immersed structures. To resolve slender fibers, the grid spacing must be on the order of the fiber radius, and thus the number of required grid points along the filament must be of the same order as the aspect ratio. Simulations of slender bodies using the IB method can therefore be intractable. A technique is presented to address this problem in the context of…
We develop a multirate timestepper for semi-implicit solutions of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (INSE) based on a recently-developed multidomain spectral element method (SEM). For {\em incompressible} flows, multirate timestepping (MTS) is particularly challenging because of the tight coupling implied by the incompressibility constraint, which manifests as an elliptic subproblem for the pressure at each timestep. The novelty of our approach stems from the development of a stable overlapping Schwarz method applied directly to the Navier-Stokes equations, rather than to the…
A Local Parallel Finite Element Method for Super-Hydrophobic Proppants in a Hydraulic Fracturing System Based on a 2D/3D Transient Triple-Porosity Navier-Stokes Model
We present a second-order monolithic method for solving incompressible Navier--Stokes equations on irregular domains with quadtree grids. A semi-collocated grid layout is adopted, where velocity variables are located at cell vertices, and pressure variables are located at cell centers. Compact finite difference methods with ghost values are used to discretize the advection and diffusion terms of the velocity. A pressure gradient and divergence operator on the quadtree that use compact stencils are developed. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended to cubical domains with octree grids. Num…
We propose a mixed finite element method for Stokes flow with one degree of freedom per element and facet of simplicial grids. The method is derived by considering the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation and eliminating the vorticity locally through the use of a quadrature rule. The discrete solution is pointwise divergence-free and the method is pressure robust. The theoretically derived convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.
In the paper, an approach for the numerical solution of stationary nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations in rotation and convective forms in a polygonal domain containing one reentrant corner on its boundary, that is, a corner greater than $π$ is considered. The method allows us to obtain the 1st order of convergence of the approximate solution to the exact one with respect to the grid step h, regardless of the reentrant corner value.
A fourth-order finite volume embedded boundary (EB) method is presented for the unsteady Stokes equations. The algorithm represents complex geometries on a Cartesian grid using EB, employing a technique to mitigate the "small cut-cell" problem without mesh modifications, cell merging, or state redistribution. Spatial discretizations are based on a weighted least-squares technique that has been extended to fourth-order operators and boundary conditions, including an approximate projection to enforce the divergence-free constraint. Solutions are advanced in time using a fourth-order additive imp…
Multigrid methods are popular solution algorithms for many discretized PDEs, either as standalone iterative solvers or as preconditioners, due to their high efficiency. However, the choice and optimization of multigrid components such as relaxation schemes and grid-transfer operators is crucial to the design of optimally efficient algorithms. It is well--known that local Fourier analysis (LFA) is a useful tool to predict and analyze the performance of these components. In this paper, we develop a local Fourier analysis of monolithic multigrid methods based on additive Vanka relaxation schemes …
We consider an alternative Navier-Stokes model for compressible viscous ideal gases, originally proposed in \cite{Svard18}. We derive a priori estimates that are sufficiently strong to support a weak entropy solution of the system. Guided by these estimates, we propose a finite volume scheme, derive the analogous estimates and demonstrate grid convergence towards a weak entropy solution. Furthermore, this existence proof is valid for "large" initial data and no a priori assumptions on the solution are needed.
A pressure-based semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered unstructured meshes for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers
First-order convergence in time and space is proved for a fully discrete semi-implicit finite element method for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations with $L^2$ initial data in convex polygonal domains, without extra regularity assumptions or grid-ratio conditions. The proof utilises the smoothing properties of the Navier--Stokes equations, an appropriate duality argument, and the smallness of the numerical solution in the discrete $L^2(0,t_m;H^1)$ norm when $t_m$ is smaller than some constant. Numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical analysis.

Unfitted finite element methods have emerged as a popular alternative to classical finite element methods for the solution of partial differential equations and allow modeling arbitrary geometries without the need for a boundary-conforming mesh. On the other hand, the efficient solution of the resultant system is a challenging task because of the numerical ill-conditioning that typically entails from the formulation of such methods. We use an adaptive geometric multigrid solver for the solution of the mixed finite cell formulation of saddle-point problems and investigate its convergence in the…
