A discontinuous viscosity coefficient makes the jump conditions of the velocity and normal stress coupled together, which brings great challenges to some commonly used numerical methods to obtain accurate solutions. To overcome the difficulties, a kernel free boundary integral (KFBI) method combined with a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) scheme is developed to solve the two-phase Stokes problems with discontinuous viscosity. The main idea is to reformulate the two-phase Stokes problem into a single-fluid Stokes problem by using boundary integral equations and then evaluate the boundary integrals indirectly through a Cartesian grid-based method. Since the jump conditions of the single-fluid Stokes problems can be easily decoupled, the modified MAC scheme is adopted here and the existing fast solver can be applicable for the resulting linear saddle system. The computed numerical solutions are second order accurate in discrete $\ell^2$-norm for velocity and pressure as well as the gradient of velocity, and also second order accurate in maximum norm for both velocity and its gradient, even in the case of high contrast viscosity coefficient, which is demonstrated in numerical tests.
In this paper we propose a pressure robust staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes equations on general polygonal meshes by using piecewise constant approximations. We modify the right hand side of the body force in the discrete formulation by exploiting divergence preserving velocity reconstruction operator, which is the crux for pressure independent velocity error estimates. The optimal convergence for velocity gradient, velocity and pressure are proved. In addition, we are able to prove the superconvergence of velocity approximation by the incorporation of divergence preservi…
A new high order accurate staggered semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is presented for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on unstructured triangular grids in two space dimensions. The staggered DG scheme defines the discrete pressure on the primal triangular mesh, while the discrete velocity is defined on a staggered edge-based dual quadrilateral mesh. In this paper, a new pair of equal-order-interpolation velocity-pressure finite elements is proposed. On the primary triangular mesh (the pressure elements) the basis functions are piecewise polynomials of d…
A pressure-based semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered unstructured meshes for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers
In this paper, we develop an adaptive multiresolution discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws in multidimensions. Compared with previous work for linear hyperbolic equations \cite{guo2016transport, guo2017adaptive}, a class of interpolatory multiwavelets are applied to efficiently compute the nonlinear integrals over elements and edges in DG schemes. The resulting algorithm, therefore can achieve similar computational complexity as the sparse grid DG method for smooth solutions. Theoretical and numerical studies are performed taking into consideration of accu…
In this paper, we present and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for Darcy flows in fractured porous media on fairly general meshes. A staggered discontinuous Galerkin method and a standard conforming finite element method with appropriate inclusion of interface conditions are exploited for the bulk region and the fracture, respectively. Our current analysis weakens the usual assumption on the polygonal mesh, which can integrate more general meshes such as elements with arbitrarily small edges into our theoretical framework. We prove the optimal convergence estimates in $L^2$ er…
We propose a new family of high order staggered semi-implicit discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the simulation of natural convection problems. Assuming small temperature fluctuations, the Boussinesq approximation is valid and the flow can simply be modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a transport equation for the temperature and a buoyancy source term in the momentum equation. Our numerical scheme is developed starting from the work presented in [TD14], in which the spatial domain is discretized using a face-based staggered unstructured mesh. For the computa…

A staggered space-time discontinuous Galerkin method for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes
We present a novel structure-preserving numerical scheme for discontinuous finite element approximations of nonlinear hyperbolic systems. The method can be understood as a generalization of the Lax-Friedrichs flux to a high-order staggered grid and does not depend on any tunable parameters. Under a presented set of conditions, we show that the method is conservative and invariant domain preserving. Numerical experiments on the Euler equations show the ability of the scheme to resolve discontinuities without introducing excessive spurious oscillations or dissipation.
Friedrichs' systems discretized with the Discontinuous Galerkin method: domain decomposable model order reduction and Graph Neural Networks approximating vanishing viscosity solutions
Two residual-type error estimators for the mortar staggered discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of second order elliptic equations are developed. Both error estimators are proved to be reliable and efficient. Key to the derivation of the error estimator in potential $L^2$ error is the duality argument. On the other hand, an auxiliary function is defined, making it capable of decomposing the energy error into conforming part and nonconforming part, which can be combined with the well-known Scott-Zhang local quasi-interpolation operator and the mortar discrete formulation yields an error esti…
We present a stable spectral vanishing viscosity for discontinuous Galerkin schemes, with applications to turbulent and supersonic flows. The idea behind the SVV is to spatially filter the dissipative fluxes, such that it concentrates in higher wavenumbers, where the flow is typically under-resolved, leaving low wavenumbers dissipation-free. Moreover, we derive a stable approximation of the Guermond-Popov fluxes with the Bassi-Rebay 1 scheme, used to introduce density regularization in shock capturing simulations. This filtering uses a Cholesky decomposition of the fluxes that ensures the entr…
The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a channel, using a Discontinuous Galerkin method over staggered grids. The resulting linear systems are studied both in terms of the structure and in terms of the spectral features of the related coefficient matrices. In fact, the resulting matrices are of block type, each block showing Toeplitz-like, band, and tensor structure at the same time. Using this rich matrix-theoretic information and the Toeplitz, Generalized Locally Toeplitz technology, a quite complete spectral analysis is presented, with the target of designing and analyzing…
In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…
In this paper, we design and analyze staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods of arbitrary polynomial orders for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on polygonal meshes. The exact divergence-free condition for the velocity is satisfied without any postprocessing. The resulting method is pressure-robust so that the pressure approximation does not influence the velocity approximation. A new nonlinear convective term that earning non-negativity is proposed. The optimal convergence estimates for all the variables in $L^2$ norm are proved. Also, assuming that the rotational part of the forcing t…
We extend and analyze the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for second order wave equations on staggered and structured meshes. By combining spatial staggering with local time-stepping near boundaries, the method overcomes the typical numerical stiffness associated with high order piecewise polynomial approximations. In one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions and suitably chosen numerical fluxes, we prove bounds on the spatial operators that establish stability for CFL numbers $c \frac {Δt}{h} < C$ independent of order when stability-enhanced explicit time-stepping schem…
A new high order accurate semi-implicit space-time Discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered grids, for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on two-dimensional domains is presented. The designed scheme is of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian type, which is suitable to work on fixed as well as on moving meshes. In our space-time formulation, by expressing the numerical solution in terms of piecewise space-time polynomials, an arbitrary high order of accuracy in time is achieved through a simple and efficient method of Picard iterations. For the dual mesh, the basis functions consist …
Discontinuous Galerkin methods of higher order are applied as temporal discretizations for the transient Navier--Stokes equations. The spatial discretization based on inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces is stabilised using a one-level local projection stabilisation method. Optimal error bounds for the velocity with constants independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained for the semi-discrete case. For the fully discrete case, error estimates for both velocity and pressure are given. Numerical results support the theoretical predictions.
In this paper we develop a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer problems coupled with the \Red{Beavers-Joseph-Saffman} conditions. The method is defined by imposing staggered continuity for all the variables involved and the interface conditions are enforced by switching the roles of the variables met on the interface, which eliminate the hassle of introducing additional variables. This method can be flexibly applied to rough grids such as the highly distorted grids and the polygonal grids. In addition, the method allows nonmatching grids on the interfac…

We provide a method to compute the entropy-satisfying weak solution to the eikonal equation in an arbitrary-order polynomial space. The method uses an artificial viscosity approach and is demonstrated for the signed distance function, where exact solutions are available. The method is designed specifically for an existing high-order discontinuous-Galerkin framework, which uses standard convection, diffusion, and source terms. We show design order of accuracy and good behavior for both shocks and rarefaction type solutions. Finally the distance function around a complex multi-element airfoil is…
In this paper we propose and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity on general polygonal meshes. Elasticity is equipped with stress-displacement-rotation formulation with weak stress symmetry for arbitrary polynomial orders, which extends the piecewise constant approximation developed in (L. Zhao and E.-J. Park, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 42 (2020), A2158-A2181). The proposed method is locking free and can handle highly distorted grids possibly including hanging nodes, which is desirable for practical applications. We prove…
We present a new numerical approach for wave induced dynamic fracture. The method is based on a discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the first-order hyperbolic system for elastic waves and a phase-field approximation of brittle fracture driven by the maximum tension. The algorithm is staggered in time and combines an implicit midpoint rule for the wave propagation followed by an implicit Euler step for the phase-field evolution. At fracture, the material is degraded, and the waves are reflected at the diffusive interfaces. Two and three-dimensional examples demonstrate the advantages of the…

We present a high order, robust, and stable shock-capturing technique for finite element approximations of ideal MHD. The method uses continuous Lagrange polynomials in space and explicit Runge-Kutta schemes in time. The shock-capturing term is based on the residual of MHD which tracks the shock and discontinuity positions, and adds a sufficient amount of viscosity to stabilize them. The method is tested up to third order polynomial spaces and an expected fourth-order convergence rate is obtained for smooth problems. Several discontinuous benchmarks such as Orszag-Tang, MHD rotor, Brio-Wu prob…
In this paper, we present optimal error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin method with generalized numerical fluxes for one-dimensional nonlinear convection-diffusion systems. The upwind-biased flux with adjustable numerical viscosity for the convective term is chosen based on the local characteristic decomposition, which is helpful in resolving discontinuities of degenerate parabolic equations without enforcing any limiting procedure. For the diffusive term, a pair of generalized alternating fluxes are considered. By constructing and analyzing generalized Gauss-Radau projections wi…
In this paper, we present a semi-implicit numerical solver for a first order hyperbolic formulation of two-phase flow with surface tension and viscosity. The numerical method addresses several complexities presented by the PDE system in consideration: (i) The presence of involution constraints of curl type in the governing equations requires explicit enforcement of the zero-curl property of certain vector fields (an interface field and a distortion field); the problem is eliminated entirely by adopting a set of compatible curl and gradient discrete differential operators on a staggered grid, a…
A novel approach for the stabilization of the discontinuous Galerkin method based on the Dafermos entropy rate crition is presented. The approach is centered around the efficient solution of linear or nonlinear optimization problems in every timestep as a correction to the basic discontinuous Galerkin scheme. The thereby enforced Dafermos criterion results in improved stability compared to the basic method while retaining the order of the method in numerical experiments. Further modification of the optimization problem allows also to enforce classical entropy inequalities for the scheme. The p…
