In this paper we propose a new high order accurate space-time DG finite element scheme for the solution of the linear elastic wave equations in first order velocity-stress formulation in two and three-space dimensions on staggered unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes. The method reaches arbitrary high order of accuracy in both space and time via the use of space-time basis and test functions. Within the staggered mesh formulation, we define the discrete velocity field in the control volumes of a primary mesh, while the discrete stress tensor is defined on a face-based staggered dual mesh. The space-time DG formulation leads to an implicit scheme that requires the solution of a linear system for the unknown degrees of freedom at the new time level. The number of unknowns is reduced at the aid of the Schur complement, so that in the end only a linear system for the degrees of freedom of the velocity field needs to be solved. Thanks to the use of a spatially staggered mesh, the stencil of the final velocity system involves only the element and its direct neighbors. The resulting linear system can be efficiently solved via matrix-free iterative methods. The chosen discretization and the linear nature of the governing PDE system lead to an unconditionally stable scheme, which allows large time steps even for low quality meshes that contain sliver elements. The fully discrete staggered space-time DG method is proven to be energy stable for any order of accuracy, for any mesh and for any time step size. For the particular case of Crank-Nicolson time discretization and homogeneous material, the final velocity system can be proven to be symmetric and positive definite and in this case the scheme is also exactly energy preserving. The new scheme is applied to several test problems in two and three space dimensions, providing also a comparison with high order explicit ADER-DG schemes
In this paper, we design and analyze staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods of arbitrary polynomial orders for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on polygonal meshes. The exact divergence-free condition for the velocity is satisfied without any postprocessing. The resulting method is pressure-robust so that the pressure approximation does not influence the velocity approximation. A new nonlinear convective term that earning non-negativity is proposed. The optimal convergence estimates for all the variables in $L^2$ norm are proved. Also, assuming that the rotational part of the forcing t…
We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…
A new high order accurate semi-implicit space-time Discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered grids, for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on two-dimensional domains is presented. The designed scheme is of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian type, which is suitable to work on fixed as well as on moving meshes. In our space-time formulation, by expressing the numerical solution in terms of piecewise space-time polynomials, an arbitrary high order of accuracy in time is achieved through a simple and efficient method of Picard iterations. For the dual mesh, the basis functions consist …
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
This paper constructs two conforming finite element grad grad and elasticity complexes on the cuboid meshes. For the finite element grad grad complex, an $H^2$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{curl}; \mathbb{S})$ conforming finite element space, an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div}; \mathbb{T})$ conforming finite element space and an $\boldsymbol{L}^2$ finite element space are constructed. Further, a finite element complex with reduced regularity is also constructed, whose degrees of freedom for the three diagonal components are coupled. For the finite element…
In this paper, we present and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for Darcy flows in fractured porous media on fairly general meshes. A staggered discontinuous Galerkin method and a standard conforming finite element method with appropriate inclusion of interface conditions are exploited for the bulk region and the fracture, respectively. Our current analysis weakens the usual assumption on the polygonal mesh, which can integrate more general meshes such as elements with arbitrarily small edges into our theoretical framework. We prove the optimal convergence estimates in $L^2$ er…
We propose a WENO finite difference scheme to approximate anelastic flows, and scalars advected by them, on staggered grids. In contrast to existing WENO schemes on staggered grids, the proposed scheme is designed to be arbitrarily high-order accurate as it judiciously combines ENO interpolations of velocities with WENO reconstructions of spatial derivatives. A set of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the increase in accuracy and robustness with the proposed scheme, when compared to existing WENO schemes and state-of-the-art central finite difference schemes.
In this paper we propose and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity on general polygonal meshes. Elasticity is equipped with stress-displacement-rotation formulation with weak stress symmetry for arbitrary polynomial orders, which extends the piecewise constant approximation developed in (L. Zhao and E.-J. Park, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 42 (2020), A2158-A2181). The proposed method is locking free and can handle highly distorted grids possibly including hanging nodes, which is desirable for practical applications. We prove…
In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity problem allowing small edges. With this approach, the classic assumptions on the geometrical features of the polygonal meshes can be relaxed. In particular, we consider only star-shaped polygons for the meshes. Suitable error estimates are presented, where a rigorous analysis on the influence of the Lamé constants in each estimate is presented. We report numerical tests to assess the performance of the method.
We address here the discretization of the momentum convection operator for fluid flow simulations on 2D triangular and quadrangular meshes and 3D polyhedral meshes containing hexahedra, tetrahedra, prisms and pyramids. The finite volume scheme that we use for the full Euler equations is based on a staggered discretization: the density unknowns are associated with a primal mesh, whereas the velocity unknowns are associated with a "fictive" dual mesh. Accordingly, the convection operator of the mass balance equation is derived on the primal mesh, while the the convection operator of the momentum…
In this paper we present a conservative cell-centered Lagrangian finite volume scheme for the solution of the hyper-elasticity equations on unstructured multidimensional grids. The starting point of the new method is the Eucclhyd scheme, which is here combined with the a posteriori Multidimensional Optimal Order Detection (MOOD) limiting strategy to ensure robustness and stability at shock waves with piece-wise linear spatial reconstruction. The ADER (Arbitrary high order schemes using DERivatives) approach is adopted to obtain second-order of accuracy in time as well. This method has been tes…
A pressure-based semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered unstructured meshes for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers
In this paper a new hybrid semi-implicit finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme is presented for the numerical solution of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers on unstructured staggered meshes in two and three space dimensions. The chosen grid arrangement consists of a primal simplex mesh composed of triangles or tetrahedra, and an edge-based / face-based staggered dual mesh. The governing equations are discretized in conservation form. The nonlinear convective terms of the equations, as well as the viscous stress tensor and the heat flux, are discretiz…
An important requirement in the standard finite element method (FEM) is that all elements in the underlying mesh must be tangle-free i.e., the Jacobian must be positive throughout each element. To relax this requirement, an isoparametric tangled finite element method (i-TFEM) was recently proposed for linear elasticity problems. It was demonstrated that i-TFEM leads to optimal convergence even for severely tangled meshes. In this paper, i-TFEM is generalized to nonlinear elasticity. Specifically, a variational formulation is proposed that leads to local modification in the tangent stiffness ma…
A staggered space-time discontinuous Galerkin method for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes
A finite element elasticity complex on tetrahedral meshes is devised. The $H^1$ conforming finite element is the smooth finite element developed by Neilan for the velocity field in a discrete Stokes complex. The symmetric div-conforming finite element is the Hu-Zhang element for stress tensors. The construction of an $H(\textrm{inc})$-conforming finite element for symmetric tensors is the main focus of this paper. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace of the $\textrm{inc}$ operator. The polynomial elasticity co…
In this work we address the reduction of face degrees of freedom (DOFs) for discrete elasticity complexes. Specifically, using serendipity techniques, we develop a reduced version of a recently introduced two-dimensional complex arising from traces of the three-dimensional elasticity complex. The keystone of the reduction process is a new estimate of symmetric tensor-valued polynomial fields in terms of boundary values, completed with suitable projections of internal values for higher degrees. We prove an extensive set of new results for the original complex and show that the reduced complex h…
Modeling flows in fractured porous media is important in applications. One main challenge in numerical simulation is that the flow is strongly influenced by the fractures, so that the solutions typically contain complex features, which require high computational grid resolutions. Instead of using uniformly fine mesh, a more computationally efficient adaptively refined mesh is desirable. In this paper we design and analyze a novel residual-type a posteriori error estimator for staggered DG methods on general polygonal meshes for Darcy flows in fractured porous media. The method can handle fairl…
We consider and discretize a mixed formulation for linear elasticity with weakly imposed symmetry in two and three dimensions. Whereas existing methods mainly deal with simplicial or polygonal meshes, we take advantage of isogeometric analysis (IGA) and consequently allow for shapes with curved boundaries. To introduce the discrete spaces we use isogeometric discrete differential forms defined by proper B-spline spaces. For the proposed schemes a proof of well-posedness and an error estimate are given. Further we discuss our ansatz by means of different numerical examples.

In this paper we propose and analyze a uniformly robust staggered DG method for the unsteady Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman problem. Our formulation is based on velocity gradient-velocity-pressure and the resulting scheme can be flexibly applied to fairly general polygonal meshes. We relax the tangential continuity for velocity, which is the key ingredient in achieving the uniform robustness. We present well-posedness and error analysis for both the semi-discrete scheme and the fully discrete scheme, and the theories indicate that the error estimates for velocity are independent of pressure. Sever…
In this paper we propose a pressure robust staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes equations on general polygonal meshes by using piecewise constant approximations. We modify the right hand side of the body force in the discrete formulation by exploiting divergence preserving velocity reconstruction operator, which is the crux for pressure independent velocity error estimates. The optimal convergence for velocity gradient, velocity and pressure are proved. In addition, we are able to prove the superconvergence of velocity approximation by the incorporation of divergence preservi…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
A conforming triangular mixed element recently proposed by Hu and Zhang for linear elasticity is extended by rearranging the global degrees of freedom. More precisely, adaptive meshes $\mathcal{T}_1$, $\cdots$, $\mathcal{T}_N$ which are successively refined from an initial mesh $\mathcal{T}_0$ through a newest vertex bisection strategy, admit a crucial hierarchical structure, namely, a newly added vertex $\boldsymbol{x}$ of the mesh $\mathcal{T}_\ell$ is the midpoint of an edge $e$ of the coarse mesh $\mathcal{T}_{\ell-1}$. Such a hierarchical structure is explored to partially relax the $C^0$…
A new preconditioner is developed for high order finite element approximation of linear elastic problems on triangular meshes in two dimensions. The new preconditioner results in a condition number that is bounded independently of the degree $p$, the mesh-size $h$ and the ratio $λ/μ$. The resulting condition number is reduced to roughly $6.0$ for all values of the parameters and discretization parameters on standard test problems. Crucially, the overall cost of the new preconditioner is comparable to the cost of applying standard domain decomposition based preconditioners.
In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…
We present a mesh-independent and parameter-robust multigrid solver for the Scott-Vogelius discretisation of the nearly incompressible linear elasticity equations on meshes with a macro element structure. The discretisation achieves exact representation of the limiting divergence constraint at moderate polynomial degree. Both the relaxation and multigrid transfer operators exploit the macro structure for robustness and efficiency. For the relaxation, we use the existence of local Fortin operators on each macro cell to construct a local space decomposition with parameter-robust convergence. For…
We present a novel second-order semi-implicit hybrid finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme for the numerical solution of the incompressible and weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving unstructured meshes using an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The scheme is based on a suitable splitting of the governing PDE into subsystems and employs staggered grids, where the pressure is defined on the primal simplex mesh, while the velocity and the remaining flow quantities are defined on an edge-based staggered dual mesh. The key idea of the scheme is to discretize t…
We propose a novel numerical method for the solution of the shallow water equations in different regimes of the Froude number making use of general polygonal meshes. The fluxes of the governing equations are split such that advection and acoustic-gravity sub-systems are derived, hence separating slow and fast phenomena. This splitting allows the nonlinear convective fluxes to be discretized explicitly in time, while retaining an implicit time marching for the acoustic-gravity terms. Consequently, the novel schemes are particularly well suited in the low Froude limit of the model, since no nume…
An interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method of arbitrary order is proposed for linear elasticity interface problems on unfitted meshes with respect to the interface and domain boundary. The method uses piecewise polynomials of degrees $k\ (>= 1)$ and $k-1$ respectively for the displacement and stress approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, and piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for the numerical traces of the displacement on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains and on the interfac…
