A new high order accurate semi-implicit space-time Discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered grids, for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on two-dimensional domains is presented. The designed scheme is of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian type, which is suitable to work on fixed as well as on moving meshes. In our space-time formulation, by expressing the numerical solution in terms of piecewise space-time polynomials, an arbitrary high order of accuracy in time is achieved through a simple and efficient method of Picard iterations. For the dual mesh, the basis functions consist in the union of continuous piecewise polynomials on the two subtriangles within the quadrilaterals: this allows the construction of a quadrature-free scheme, resulting in a very efficient algorithm. Some numerical examples confirm that the proposed method outperforms existing ones.
In this paper, we design and analyze staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods of arbitrary polynomial orders for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on polygonal meshes. The exact divergence-free condition for the velocity is satisfied without any postprocessing. The resulting method is pressure-robust so that the pressure approximation does not influence the velocity approximation. A new nonlinear convective term that earning non-negativity is proposed. The optimal convergence estimates for all the variables in $L^2$ norm are proved. Also, assuming that the rotational part of the forcing t…
In this paper, we present and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for Darcy flows in fractured porous media on fairly general meshes. A staggered discontinuous Galerkin method and a standard conforming finite element method with appropriate inclusion of interface conditions are exploited for the bulk region and the fracture, respectively. Our current analysis weakens the usual assumption on the polygonal mesh, which can integrate more general meshes such as elements with arbitrarily small edges into our theoretical framework. We prove the optimal convergence estimates in $L^2$ er…
We propose a WENO finite difference scheme to approximate anelastic flows, and scalars advected by them, on staggered grids. In contrast to existing WENO schemes on staggered grids, the proposed scheme is designed to be arbitrarily high-order accurate as it judiciously combines ENO interpolations of velocities with WENO reconstructions of spatial derivatives. A set of numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the increase in accuracy and robustness with the proposed scheme, when compared to existing WENO schemes and state-of-the-art central finite difference schemes.
The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a channel, using a Discontinuous Galerkin method over staggered grids. The resulting linear systems are studied both in terms of the structure and in terms of the spectral features of the related coefficient matrices. In fact, the resulting matrices are of block type, each block showing Toeplitz-like, band, and tensor structure at the same time. Using this rich matrix-theoretic information and the Toeplitz, Generalized Locally Toeplitz technology, a quite complete spectral analysis is presented, with the target of designing and analyzing…
In this paper we propose and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for a five-field formulation of the Biot system of poroelasticity on general polygonal meshes. Elasticity is equipped with stress-displacement-rotation formulation with weak stress symmetry for arbitrary polynomial orders, which extends the piecewise constant approximation developed in (L. Zhao and E.-J. Park, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 42 (2020), A2158-A2181). The proposed method is locking free and can handle highly distorted grids possibly including hanging nodes, which is desirable for practical applications. We prove…
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
We investigate artificial compressibility (AC) techniques for the time discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The space discretization is based on a lowest-order face-based scheme supporting polytopal meshes, namely discrete velocities are attached to the mesh faces and cells, whereas discrete pressures are attached to the mesh cells. This face-based scheme can be embedded into the framework of hybrid mixed mimetic schemes and gradient schemes, and has close links to the lowest-order version of hybrid high-order methods devised for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes…
We address here the discretization of the momentum convection operator for fluid flow simulations on 2D triangular and quadrangular meshes and 3D polyhedral meshes containing hexahedra, tetrahedra, prisms and pyramids. The finite volume scheme that we use for the full Euler equations is based on a staggered discretization: the density unknowns are associated with a primal mesh, whereas the velocity unknowns are associated with a "fictive" dual mesh. Accordingly, the convection operator of the mass balance equation is derived on the primal mesh, while the the convection operator of the momentum…
A new high order accurate staggered semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is presented for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on unstructured triangular grids in two space dimensions. The staggered DG scheme defines the discrete pressure on the primal triangular mesh, while the discrete velocity is defined on a staggered edge-based dual quadrilateral mesh. In this paper, a new pair of equal-order-interpolation velocity-pressure finite elements is proposed. On the primary triangular mesh (the pressure elements) the basis functions are piecewise polynomials of d…
A pressure-based semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered unstructured meshes for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…
In this paper a new hybrid semi-implicit finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme is presented for the numerical solution of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers on unstructured staggered meshes in two and three space dimensions. The chosen grid arrangement consists of a primal simplex mesh composed of triangles or tetrahedra, and an edge-based / face-based staggered dual mesh. The governing equations are discretized in conservation form. The nonlinear convective terms of the equations, as well as the viscous stress tensor and the heat flux, are discretiz…
A staggered space-time discontinuous Galerkin method for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes
We present a novel fully implicit hybrid finite volume/finite element method for incompressible flows. Following previous works on semi-implicit hybrid FV/FE schemes, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are split into a pressure and a transport-diffusion subsystem. The first of them can be seen as a Poisson type problem and is thus solved efficiently using classical continuous Lagrange finite elements. On the other hand, finite volume methods are employed to solve the convective subsystem, in combination with Crouzeix-Raviart finite elements for the discretization of the viscous stress …
Modeling flows in fractured porous media is important in applications. One main challenge in numerical simulation is that the flow is strongly influenced by the fractures, so that the solutions typically contain complex features, which require high computational grid resolutions. Instead of using uniformly fine mesh, a more computationally efficient adaptively refined mesh is desirable. In this paper we design and analyze a novel residual-type a posteriori error estimator for staggered DG methods on general polygonal meshes for Darcy flows in fractured porous media. The method can handle fairl…

In this paper we propose and analyze a uniformly robust staggered DG method for the unsteady Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman problem. Our formulation is based on velocity gradient-velocity-pressure and the resulting scheme can be flexibly applied to fairly general polygonal meshes. We relax the tangential continuity for velocity, which is the key ingredient in achieving the uniform robustness. We present well-posedness and error analysis for both the semi-discrete scheme and the fully discrete scheme, and the theories indicate that the error estimates for velocity are independent of pressure. Sever…
In this paper we propose a pressure robust staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes equations on general polygonal meshes by using piecewise constant approximations. We modify the right hand side of the body force in the discrete formulation by exploiting divergence preserving velocity reconstruction operator, which is the crux for pressure independent velocity error estimates. The optimal convergence for velocity gradient, velocity and pressure are proved. In addition, we are able to prove the superconvergence of velocity approximation by the incorporation of divergence preservi…
Symmetry-preserving (mimetic) discretization aims to preserve certain properties of a continuous differential operator in its discrete counterpart. For these discretizations, stability and (discrete) conservation of mass, momentum and energy are proven in the same way as for the original continuous model. This paper presents a new finite-difference symmetry-preserving space discretization. Boundary conditions and time integration are not addressed. The novelty is that it combines arbitrary order of convergence, orthogonal and non-orthogonal structured curvilinear staggered meshes, and the appl…
In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…

We present a novel second-order semi-implicit hybrid finite volume / finite element (FV/FE) scheme for the numerical solution of the incompressible and weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving unstructured meshes using an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The scheme is based on a suitable splitting of the governing PDE into subsystems and employs staggered grids, where the pressure is defined on the primal simplex mesh, while the velocity and the remaining flow quantities are defined on an edge-based staggered dual mesh. The key idea of the scheme is to discretize t…
We propose a novel numerical method for the solution of the shallow water equations in different regimes of the Froude number making use of general polygonal meshes. The fluxes of the governing equations are split such that advection and acoustic-gravity sub-systems are derived, hence separating slow and fast phenomena. This splitting allows the nonlinear convective fluxes to be discretized explicitly in time, while retaining an implicit time marching for the acoustic-gravity terms. Consequently, the novel schemes are particularly well suited in the low Froude limit of the model, since no nume…
Pressure-robustness has been widely studied since the conception of the notion and the introduction of the reconstruction approach for classical mixed methods in [5]. Using discretizations capable of yielding velocity solutions that are independent of the pressure approximation has been recognized as essential, and a large number of recent articles attest to this fact, e.g., [1,6]. Apart from the pressure-robustness aspect, incompressible flows exhibit anisotropic phenomena in the solutions which can be dealt with by using anisotropic mesh grading. The recent publications [3,4] deal with the c…
We prove in this paper the weak consistency of a general finite volume convection operator acting on discrete functions which are possibly not piecewise-constant over the cells of the mesh and over the time steps. It yields an extension of the Lax-Wendroff if-theorem for general colocated or non-colocated schemes. This result is obtained for general polygonal or polyhedral meshes, under assumptions which, for usual practical cases, essentially boil down to a flux-consistency constraint; this latter is, up to our knowledge, novel and compares the discrete flux at a face to the mean value over t…
