We present a novel structure-preserving numerical scheme for discontinuous finite element approximations of nonlinear hyperbolic systems. The method can be understood as a generalization of the Lax-Friedrichs flux to a high-order staggered grid and does not depend on any tunable parameters. Under a presented set of conditions, we show that the method is conservative and invariant domain preserving. Numerical experiments on the Euler equations show the ability of the scheme to resolve discontinuities without introducing excessive spurious oscillations or dissipation.
This article considers a new discretization scheme for conservation laws. The discretization setting is based on a discontinuous Galerkin scheme in combination with an approximation space that contains high-order polynomial modes as well as piece-wise constant modes on a sub-grid. The high-order modes can continuously be suppressed with a penalty function that is based on a sensor which is intertwined with the approximation space. Numerical tests finally illustrate the performance of this scheme.
A new procedure to capture the shocks has been proposed and is demonstrated for the solutions of two-dimensional Euler equations using discontinuous Galerkin method and overset grids. A discontinuous Galerkin solver using a coarse grid provides the troubled cell data that is used to determine the location of the shock. An overset grid aligned to the shock is constructed based on this information. The solver is run again with the coarse grid solution as the initial condition with limiting occurring only in the overset grid to give a solution with the shock aligned to the grid line. In this paper, a new strategy for a sub-element based shock capturing for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximations is presented. The idea is to interpret a DG element as a collection of data and construct a hierarchy of low to high order discretizations on this set of data, including a first order finite volume scheme up to the full order DG scheme. The different DG discretizations are then blended according to sub-element troubled cell indicators, resulting in a final discretization that adaptively blends from low to high order within a single DG element. The goal is to retain as much high …
We build a multi-element variant of the smoothness increasing accuracy conserving (SIAC) shock capturing technique proposed for single element spectral methods by Wissink et al. (B.W. Wissink, G.B. Jacobs, J.K. Ryan, W.S. Don, and E.T.A. van der Weide. Shock regularization with smoothness-increasing accuracy-conserving Dirac-delta polynomial kernels. Journal of Scientific Computing, 77:579--596, 2018). In particular, the baseline scheme of our method is the nodal discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method (DGSEM) for approximating the solution of systems of conservation laws. It is well kn…
We present a stable spectral vanishing viscosity for discontinuous Galerkin schemes, with applications to turbulent and supersonic flows. The idea behind the SVV is to spatially filter the dissipative fluxes, such that it concentrates in higher wavenumbers, where the flow is typically under-resolved, leaving low wavenumbers dissipation-free. Moreover, we derive a stable approximation of the Guermond-Popov fluxes with the Bassi-Rebay 1 scheme, used to introduce density regularization in shock capturing simulations. This filtering uses a Cholesky decomposition of the fluxes that ensures the entr…
This work proposes a high-order hybridised discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the Harten-Lax-Van Leer (HLL) Riemann solver for compressible flows. A unified framework is introduced to present Lax-Friedrichs, Roe and HLL Riemann solvers via appropriate definitions of the HDG numerical fluxes. The resulting high-order HDG method with HLL Riemann solver is evaluated through a set of numerical simulations of inviscid compressible flows in different regimes, from subsonic isentropic flows to transonic and supersonic problems with shocks. The accuracy of the proposed method is comparable wi…
Equilibrium or stationary solutions usually proceed through the exact balance between hyperbolic transport terms and source terms. Such equilibrium solutions are affected by truncation errors that prevent any classical numerical scheme from capturing the evolution of small amplitude waves of physical significance. In order to overcome this problem, we compare two commonly adopted strategies: going to very high order and reduce drastically the truncation errors on the equilibrium solution, or design a specific scheme that preserves by construction the equilibrium exactly, the so-called well-bal…

This paper develops a high order adaptive scheme for solving nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The solutions to such equations often exhibit solitary wave and local structures, which makes adaptivity essential in improving the simulation efficiency. Our scheme uses the ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation and belongs to the framework of adaptive multiresolution schemes. Various numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the excellent capability of capturing the soliton waves and the blow-up phenomenon.
In this paper we propose a novel regularization strategy for the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the context of level-set reinitialization. The novel regularization idea works in analogy to shock-capturing schemes for discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are based on finite volume sub-cells. In this spirit, the local discontinuous Galerkin method is combined with an upwind/downwind finite volume sub-cell discretization, which is applied in areas of low regularity. To ensure the applicability on unstructured meshes, the finite volume discretization …

The second paper of this series presents two robust entropy stable shock-capturing methods for discontinuous Galerkin spectral element (DGSEM) discretizations of the compressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations. Specifically, we use the resistive GLM-MHD equations, which include a divergence cleaning mechanism that is based on a generalized Lagrange multiplier (GLM). For the continuous entropy analysis to hold, and due to the divergence-free constraint on the magnetic field, the GLM-MHD system requires the use of non-conservative terms, which need special treatment. Hennemann et al. [DOI…
We propose a constraint preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for ideal compressible MHD in two dimensions and using Cartesian grids, which automatically maintains the global divergence-free property. The approximation of the magnetic field is achieved using Raviart-Thomas polynomials and the DG scheme is based on evolving certain moments of these polynomials which automatically guarantees divergence-free property. We also develop HLL-type multi-dimensional Riemann solvers to estimate the electric field at vertices which are consistent with the 1-D Riemann solvers. When limiters are used, t…
This work presents a review of high-order hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods in the context of compressible flows. Moreover, an original unified framework for the derivation of Riemann solvers in hybridised formulations is proposed. This framework includes, for the first time in an HDG context, the HLL and HLLEM Riemann solvers as well as the traditional Lax-Friedrichs and Roe solvers. HLL-type Riemann solvers demonstrate their superiority with respect to Roe in supersonic cases due to their positivity preserving properties. In addition, HLLEM specifically outstands in the appro…
We propose an explicit, single step discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method on moving grids using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach for one dimensional Euler equations. The grid is moved with the local fluid velocity modified by some smoothing, which is found to considerably reduce the numerical dissipation introduced by Riemann solvers. The scheme preserves constant states for any mesh motion and we also study its positivity preservation property. Local grid refinement and coarsening are performed to maintain the mesh quality and avoid the appearance of very small or large cells. Se…
The stable and accurate approximation of discontinuities such as shocks on a finite computational mesh is a challenging task. Detection of shocks or strong discontinuities in the flow solution is typically achieved through a priori troubled cell indicators, which guide the subsequent action of an appropriate shock capturing mechanism. Arriving at a stable and accurate solution often requires empirically based parameter tuning and adjustments of the indicator settings to the discretization and solution at hand. In this work, we propose to separate the task of shock detection and shock capturing…
This work is devoted to the development of an efficient and robust technique for accurate capturing of the electric field in multi-material problems. The formulation is based on the finite element method enriched by the introduction of hat-type shape function within the elements crossed by the material interface. The peculiar feature of the proposed method consists in the direct employment of the hat-function that requires solely one additional degree of freedom per cut element for capturing the discontinuity in the electric potential gradient and, thus, the electric field. This additional deg…
In this paper, we propose an efficient, high order accurate and asymptotic-preserving (AP) semi-Lagrangian (SL) method for the BGK model with constant or spatially dependent Knudsen number. The spatial discretization is performed by a mass conservative nodal discontinuous Galerkin (NDG) method, while the temporal discretization of the stiff relaxation term is realized by stiffly accurate diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) methods along characteristics. Extra order conditions are enforced for asymptotic accuracy (AA) property of DIRK methods when they are coupled with a semi-Lagrangian algo…
In this work, we present a positivity-preserving entropy-based adaptive filtering method for shock capturing in discontinuous spectral element methods. By adapting the filter strength to enforce positivity and a local discrete minimum entropy principle, the resulting approach can robustly resolve strong discontinuities with sub-element resolution, does not require problem-dependent parameter tuning, and can be easily implemented on general unstructured meshes with relatively low computational cost. The efficacy of the approach is shown in numerical experiments on hyperbolic and mixed hyperboli…
We propose a state redistribution method for high order discontinuous Galerkin methods on curvilinear embedded boundary grids. State redistribution relaxes the overly restrictive CFL condition that results from arbitrarily small cut cells and explicit time stepping. Thus, the scheme can take time steps that are proportional to the size of cells in the background grid. The discontinuous Galerkin scheme is stabilized by postprocessing the numerical solution after each stage or step of an explicit time stepping method. This is done by temporarily merging the small cells into larger, possibly over…
We present a provably stable discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with artificial compressibility and variable density. Stability proofs, which include boundary conditions, that follow a continuous entropy analysis are provided. We define a mathematical entropy function that combines the traditional kinetic energy and an additional energy term for the artificial compressiblity, and derive its associated entropy conservation law. The latter allows us to construct a provably stable split-form nodal Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximation…
The nonlinear convection terms in the governing equations of compressible fluid flows are hyperbolic in nature and are nontrivial for modelling and numerical simulation. Many numerical methods have been developed in the last few decades for this purpose and are typically based on Riemann solvers, which are strongly dependent on the underlying eigen-structure of the governing equations. Objective of the present work is to develop simple algorithms which are not dependent on the eigen-structure and yet can tackle easily the hyperbolic parts. Central schemes with smart diffusion mechanisms are ap…
We are interested in the numerical approximation of discontinuous solutions in non conservative hyperbolic systems. An extension to second-order of a new strategy based on in-cell discontinuous reconstructions to deal with this challenging topic is presented. This extension is based on the combination of the first-order in-cell reconstruction and the MUSCL-Hancock reconstruction. The first-order strategy allowed in particular to capture exactly the isolated shocks and this new second-order extension keep this property. We also set the basis of an extension to high-order methods following this …
In recent years, machine learning has been used to create data-driven solutions to problems for which an algorithmic solution is intractable, as well as fine-tuning existing algorithms. This research applies machine learning to the development of an improved finite-volume method for simulating PDEs with discontinuous solutions. Shock capturing methods make use of nonlinear switching functions that are not guaranteed to be optimal. Because data can be used to learn nonlinear relationships, we train a neural network to improve the results of a fifth-order WENO method. We post-process the outputs…
We present a high order, robust, and stable shock-capturing technique for finite element approximations of ideal MHD. The method uses continuous Lagrange polynomials in space and explicit Runge-Kutta schemes in time. The shock-capturing term is based on the residual of MHD which tracks the shock and discontinuity positions, and adds a sufficient amount of viscosity to stabilize them. The method is tested up to third order polynomial spaces and an expected fourth-order convergence rate is obtained for smooth problems. Several discontinuous benchmarks such as Orszag-Tang, MHD rotor, Brio-Wu prob…
In this paper, the discontinuous Galerkin based high-order gas-kinetic schemes (DG-HGKS) are developed for the three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Different from the traditional discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods with Riemann solvers, the current method adopts a kinetic evolution process, which is provided by the integral solution of Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model. In the weak formulation of DG method, a time-dependent evolution function is provided, and both inviscid and viscous fluxes can be calculated uniformly. The temporal accuracy is achieved by the two-stage fourth-…
In this work, we introduce a novel approach to formulating an artificial viscosity for shock capturing in nonlinear hyperbolic systems by utilizing the property that the solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not reversible in time in the vicinity of shocks. The proposed approach does not require any additional governing equations or a priori knowledge of the hyperbolic system in question, is independent of the mesh and approximation order, and requires the use of only one tunable parameter. The primary novelty is that the resulting artificial viscosity is unique for each component of t…
