This work presents a review of high-order hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods in the context of compressible flows. Moreover, an original unified framework for the derivation of Riemann solvers in hybridised formulations is proposed. This framework includes, for the first time in an HDG context, the HLL and HLLEM Riemann solvers as well as the traditional Lax-Friedrichs and Roe solvers. HLL-type Riemann solvers demonstrate their superiority with respect to Roe in supersonic cases due to their positivity preserving properties. In addition, HLLEM specifically outstands in the approximation of boundary layers because of its shear preservation, which confers it an increased accuracy with respect to HLL and Lax-Friedrichs. A comprehensive set of relevant numerical benchmarks of viscous and inviscid compressible flows is presented. The test cases are used to evaluate the competitiveness of the resulting high-order HDG scheme with the aforementioned Riemann solvers and equipped with a shock treatment technique based on artificial viscosity.
This paper proposes a novel computational framework for the solution of geometrically parametrised flow problems governed by the Stokes equation. The proposed method uses a high-order hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin formulation and the proper generalised decomposition rationale to construct an off-line solution for a given set of geometric parameters. The generalised solution contains the information for all the geometric parameters in a user-defined range and it can be used to compute sensitivities. The proposed approach circumvents many of the weaknesses of other approaches based on the …
The first super-convergent hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for linear elastic problems capable of using the same degree of approximation for both the primal and mixed variables is presented. The key feature of the method is the strong imposition of the symmetry of the stress tensor by means of the well-known and extensively used Voigt notation, circumventing the use of complex mathematical concepts to enforce the symmetry of the stress tensor either weakly or strongly. A novel procedure to construct element-by-element a super-convergent post-processed displacement is proposed.…
This paper presents HDGlab, an open source MATLAB implementation of the hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. The main goal is to provide a detailed description of both the HDG method for elliptic problems and its implementation available in HDGlab. Ultimately, this is expected to make this relatively new advanced discretisation method more accessible to the computational engineering community. HDGlab presents some features not available in other implementations of the HDG method that can be found in the free domain. First, it implements high-order polynomial shape functions up to …
A scheme for the solution of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with weakly compressible flows is proposed in this work. A novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method is derived for the discretization of the fluid equations, while the standard continuous Galerkin (CG) approach is adopted for the structural problem. The chosen HDG solver combines robustness of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approaches in advection-dominated flows with higher order accuracy and efficient implementations. Two coupling strategies are examined in this contribution, namely a partitioned Dirichlet-Neu…
We propose a constraint preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for ideal compressible MHD in two dimensions and using Cartesian grids, which automatically maintains the global divergence-free property. The approximation of the magnetic field is achieved using Raviart-Thomas polynomials and the DG scheme is based on evolving certain moments of these polynomials which automatically guarantees divergence-free property. We also develop HLL-type multi-dimensional Riemann solvers to estimate the electric field at vertices which are consistent with the 1-D Riemann solvers. When limiters are used, t…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
Entropy stable schemes ensure that physically meaningful numerical solutions also satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality under appropriate boundary conditions. In this work, we describe a discretization of viscous terms in the compressible Navier-Stokes equations which enables a simple and explicit imposition of entropy stable no-slip (adiabatic and isothermal) and reflective (symmetry) wall boundary conditions for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. Numerical results confirm the robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.
Model reduction of the compressible Euler equations based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and Galerkin orthogonality or least-squares residual minimization requires the selection of inner product spaces in which to perform projections and measure norms. The most popular choice is the vector-valued L2(Ω) inner product space. This choice, however, yields dimensionally-inconsistent reduced-order model (ROM) formulations which often lack robustness. In this work, we try to address this weakness by studying a set of dimensionally-consistent inner products with application to the compressib…
This work proposes a high-order hybridised discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the Harten-Lax-Van Leer (HLL) Riemann solver for compressible flows. A unified framework is introduced to present Lax-Friedrichs, Roe and HLL Riemann solvers via appropriate definitions of the HDG numerical fluxes. The resulting high-order HDG method with HLL Riemann solver is evaluated through a set of numerical simulations of inviscid compressible flows in different regimes, from subsonic isentropic flows to transonic and supersonic problems with shocks. The accuracy of the proposed method is comparable wi…

We introduce an immersed high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on non-boundary-fitted meshes. The flow equations are discretised with a mixed discontinuous Galerkin formulation and are advanced in time with an explicit time marching scheme. The discretisation meshes may contain simplicial (triangular or tetrahedral) elements of different sizes and need not be structured. On the discretisation mesh the fluid domain boundary is represented with an implicit signed distance function. The cut-elements partially covered by the solid domain are …
A moving discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with interface conservation enforcement (MDG+ICE) is developed for solving the compressible Euler equations. The MDG+ICE method is based on the space-time DG formulation, where both flow field and grid geometry are considered as independent variables and the conservation laws are enforced both on discrete elements and element interfaces. The element conservation laws are solved in the standard discontinuous solution space to determine conservative quantities, while the interface conservation is enforced using a variational formulation in a …

The moving discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with interface condition enforcement (MDG-ICE) is applied to the case of viscous flows. This method uses a weak formulation that separately enforces the conservation law, constitutive law, and the corresponding interface conditions in order to provide the means to detect interfaces or under-resolved flow features. To satisfy the resulting overdetermined weak formulation, the discrete domain geometry is introduced as a variable, so that the method implicitly fits a priori unknown interfaces and moves the grid to resolve sharp, but smooth, …
Positivity-preserving and entropy-bounded discontinuous Galerkin method for the chemically reacting, compressible Euler equations. Part II: The multidimensional case
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods have a long history in computational physics and engineering to approximate solutions of partial differential equations due to their high-order accuracy and geometric flexibility. However, DG is not perfect and there remain some issues. Concerning robustness, DG has undergone an extensive transformation over the past seven years into its modern form that provides statements on solution boundedness for linear and nonlinear problems. This chapter takes a constructive approach to introduce a modern incarnation of the DG spectral element method for the compressi…
We propose a new formula for the nonlinear viscous numerical flux and extend the direct discontinuous Galerkin method with interface correction (DDGIC) of Liu and Yan (H. Liu, J. Yan, The direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) method for diffusion with interface corrections, Communications in Computational Physics 8 (3) (2010) 541) to compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The new DDGIC framework is based on the observation that the nonlinear diffusion can be represented as a sum of multiple individual diffusion processes corresponding to each conserved variable. A set of direction vectors corresp…

Parallel Nodal Interior-Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for the Subsonic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations: Applications to Vortical Flows and VIV Problems
In this paper, we use an implicit two-derivative deferred correction time discretization approach and combine it with a spatial discretization of the discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method to solve (non-)linear PDEs. The resulting numerical method is high order accurate in space and time. As the novel scheme handles two time derivatives, the spatial operator for both derivatives has to be defined. This results in an extended system matrix of the scheme. We analyze this matrix regarding possible simplifications and an efficient way to solve the arising (non-)linear system of equations. …
Affordable, high order simulations of turbulent flows on unstructured grids for very high Reynolds number flows require wall models for efficiency. However, different wall models have different accuracy and stability properties. Here, we develop a kinetic energy stability estimate to investigate stability of wall model boundary conditions. Using this norm, two wall models are studied, a popular equilibrium stress wall model, which is found to be unstable and the dynamic slip wall model which is found to be stable. These results are extended to the discrete case using the Summation by parts (SB…
This paper is a continuation of the work presented in [Chertock et al., Math. Cli. Weather Forecast. 5, 1 (2019), 65--106]. We study uncertainty propagation in warm cloud dynamics of weakly compressible fluids. The mathematical model is governed by a multiscale system of PDEs in which the macroscopic fluid dynamics is described by a weakly compressible Navier-Stokes system and the microscopic cloud dynamics is modeled by a convection-diffusion-reaction system. In order to quantify uncertainties present in the system, we derive and implement a generalized polynomial chaos stochastic Galerkin me…
Split form schemes for Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are useful for computation of turbulent flows due to their better robustness. This is because they satisfy additional conservation properties of the governing equations like kinetic energy preservation leading to a reduction in aliasing errors at high orders. Recently, linear stability issues have been pointed out for these schemes for a density wave problem and we investigate this behaviour for some standard split forms. By deriving linearized equations of split form schemes, we show that most existing schemes do not satisfy a perturbat…
We present a well-balanced nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for compressible Euler equations with gravity. The DG scheme makes use of discontinuous Lagrange basis functions supported at Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre (GLL) nodes together with GLL quadrature using the same nodes. The well-balanced property is achieved by a specific form of source term discretization that depends on the nature of the hydrostatic solution, together with the GLL nodes for quadrature of the source term. The scheme is able to preserve isothermal and polytropic stationary solutions upto machine precision on any mesh …
In this work, we extend the $τ$-estimation method to unsteady problems and use it to adapt the polynomial degree for high-order discontinuous Galerkin simulations of unsteady flows. The adaptation is local and anisotropic and allows capturing relevant unsteady flow features while enhancing the accuracy of time evolving functionals (e.g., lift, drag). To achieve an efficient and unsteady truncation error-based $p$-adaptation scheme, we first revisit the definition of the truncation error, studying the effect of the treatment of the mass matrix arising from the temporal term. Secondly, we extend…
A pressure-based semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin method on staggered unstructured meshes for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers
We deal with the numerical solution of the compressible Euler equations with the aid of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with focus on the goal-oriented error estimates and adaptivity. We analyze the adjoint consistency of the DG scheme where the dual problem is not formulated by the differentiation of the DG form and the target functional but using a suitable linearization of the nonlinear forms. Further, we present the goal-oriented anisotropic $hp$-mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.

The present works is focused on studying bifurcating solutions in compressible fluid dynamics. On one side, the physics of the problem is thoroughly investigated using high-fidelity simulations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations discretised with the Discontinuous Galerkin method. On the other side, from a numerical modelling point of view, two different non-intrusive reduced order modelling techniques are employed to predict the overall behaviour of the bifurcation. Both approaches showed good agreement with full-order simulations even in proximity of the bifurcating points where the …
