We study edge modes in topological semimetals which have an energy band structure of ordinary semimetals but can be characterized by a Chern number. More specifically, we focus on a Qi-Wu-Zhang-type square-lattice model and a Haldane-type honeycomb model, both of which exhibit antichiral edge modes whose wave packets propagate in the same direction at both parallel edges of the strip. To obtain these analytical solutions of the edge modes, we apply the transfer matrix method which was developed in the previous work [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{101}, 014442 (2020)]. As a result, we show that the bulk-edge correspondence is broken down for a certain range of the model parameters. More precisely, when increasing the strength of a hopping amplitude of the Qi-Wu-Zhang-type model, the edge modes abruptly disappear, although the non-trivial Chern number does not change. In the Haldane-type model, for varying the model parameters, the edge modes do not necessarily disappear, and the non-trivial Chern number does not change. However, the energy spectral flows of the edge modes from the valence band to the conduction band are abruptly broken at a certain set of the model parameters.
The advent of topological phases of matter revealed a variety of observed boundary phenomena, such as chiral and helical modes found at the edges of two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators. Antichiral states in 2D semimetals, i.e., copropagating edge modes on opposite edges compensated by a counterpropagating bulk current, are also predicted, but, to date, no realization of such states in a solid-state system has been found. Here, we put forward a procedure to realize antichiral states in twisted van der Waals multilayers, by combining the electronic Dirac-cone spectra of each layer throug…
For a certain translation invariant tight-binding model of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals, we establish a bulk-edge correspondence as an equality of two relative homology classes, based on an idea of Mathai and Thiang: From spectral information on the edge Hamiltonian, we construct a relative homology class on the surface momentum space. This class agrees with the image under the surface projection of a homology class on the bulk momentum space relative to the Weyl points, constructed from the bulk Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the relative homology class on the surface momentum space can be re…
We investigate novel features of three dimensional non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals, paying special attention to its unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence. We use the non-Bloch Chern numbers as the tool to obtain the topological phase diagram, which is also confirmed by the energy spectra from our numerical results. It is shown that, in sharp contrast to Hermitian systems, the conventional (Bloch) bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down in non-Hermitian topological semimetals, which is caused by the non-Hermitian skin effect. We establish the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence for non-…
We give a bulk-hinge correspondence for higher-order topological phases protected by rotoinversion $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ symmetry in magnetic systems. Our approach allows us to show the emergence of the chiral hinge modes only from the information of the $C_{4}\mathcal{I}$ eigenvalues at the high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. In addition, based on the bulk-hinge correspondence, we propose a class of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) being Weyl semimetals with hinge modes and Fermi-arc surface states. The HOWSM is characterized by topological invariants for three-dimensional higher-or…
We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calcul…
Recently, topological quantum states of non-Hermitian systems, exhibiting rich new exotic states, have attracted great attention in condensed-matter physics. As for the demonstration, most of non-Hermitian topological phenomena previously focused on are in one- and two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate three-dimensional non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss perturbation. It is found that this perturbation will split the original nodal ring into two exceptional rings (ERs). The topological nature of the bulk electronic structure is characterized…
Lattices with a basis can host crystallographic defects which share the same topological charge (e.g.~the Burgers vector $\vec b$ of a dislocation) but differ in their microscopic structure of the core. We demonstrate that in insulators with particle-hole symmetry and an odd number of orbitals per site, the microscopic details drastically affect the electronic structure: modifications can create or annihilate non-trivial bound states with an associated fractional charge. We show that this observation is related to the behavior of end modes of a dimerized chain and discuss how the end or defect…
We propose a correspondence between the description of emergent Lorentz symmetry in condensed-matter systems and the established general effective field theory for Lorentz violation in fundamental theories of spacetime and matter. This correspondence has potential implications in both directions. We illustrate the proposal by investigating its consequences for the spectral and transport properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Particular realizations of this framework give rise to Dirac nodal spectra with nodal lines and rings. We demonstrate a bulk-boundary correspondence between bulk topolog…
We provide a manifestly topological classification scheme for generalised Weyl semimetals, in any spatial dimension and with arbitrary Weyl surfaces which may be non-trivially linked. The classification naturally incorporates that of Chern insulators. Our analysis refines, in a mathematically precise sense, some well-known 3D constructions to account for subtle but important global aspects of the topology of semimetals. Using a fundamental locality principle, we derive a generalized charge cancellation condition for the Weyl surface components. We analyse the bulk-boundary correspondence under…
We analyze the stability of time-reversal (${\mathcal T}$) and lattice four-fold ($C_4$) symmetry breaking three-dimensional higher-order topological (HOT) Dirac semimetals (DSMs) and the associated one-dimensional hinge modes in the presence of random pointlike charge impurities. Complementary real space numerical and momentum space renormalization group (RG) analyses suggest that a HOTDSM, while being a stable phase of matter for sufficiently weak disorder, undergoes a continuous quantum phase transition into a trivial metal at finite disorder. However, the corresponding critical exponents (…
We identify a topological Z index for three dimensional chiral insulators with P*T symmetry where two Hamiltonian terms define a nodal loop. Such systems may belong in the AIII or DIII symmetry class. The Z invariant is a winding number assigned to the nodal loop and has a correspondence to the geometric relation between the nodal loop and the zeroes of the gap terms. Dirac cone edge states under open boundary conditions are in correspondence with the winding numbers assigned to the nodal loops. We verify our method with the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of a three-dimensional material of t…
We apply the method of self-adjoint extensions of Hermitian operators to the low-energy, continuum Hamiltonians of Weyl semimetals in bounded geometries and derive the spectrum of the surface states on the boundary. This allows for the full characterization of boundary conditions and the surface spectra on surfaces both normal to the Weyl node separation as well as parallel to it. We show that the boundary conditions for quadratic bulk dispersions are, in general, specified by a $\mathbb{U}(2)$ matrix relating the wavefunction and its derivatives normal to the surface. We give a general proced…
We develop a topological theory for disordered Weyl semimetals in the framework of gauge invariance of replica formalism and boundary-bulk correspondence of Chern insulators. An anisotropic topological $θ$-term is analytically derived for the effective non-linear sigma model. It is this nontrivial topological term that ensures the bulk transverse transport of Weyl semimetals to be robust against disorders. Moreover, we establish a general diagram that reveals the intrinsic relations among topological terms in the non-linear sigma models and gauge response theories respectively for $(2n + 2)$-d…
Bulk-boundary correspondence has achieved a great success in the identification of topological states. However, this elegant strategy doesn't apply to the Dirac semimetals (DSMs). Here, we propose that kagome lattices Pd$_3$Pb$_2$X$_2$ (X = S, Se) are unique type-I DSMs without surface Fermi arc states, which are different from the previous well-known DSMs, such as Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$. Pd$_3$Pb$_2$X$_2$ are characterized by nontrivial topological invariant Z$_3$, guaranteeing a higher-order bulk-hinge correspondence and the existence of higher-order Fermi arcs, as well as fractional corn…
Riemann surfaces are geometric constructions in complex analysis that may represent multi-valued holomorphic functions using multiple sheets of the complex plane. We show that the energy dispersion of surface states in topological semimetals can be represented by Riemann surfaces generated by holomorphic functions in the two-dimensional momentum space, whose constant height contours correspond to Fermi arcs. This correspondence is demonstrated in the recently discovered Weyl semimetals and leads us to predict new types of topological semimetals, whose surface states are represented by double- …
Weyl semimetals are known to host massless surface states called Fermi arcs. These Fermi arcs are the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in topological matter and thus are analogous to the topological chiral surface states of topological insulators. It has been shown that the latter, depending on the smoothness of the surface, host massive Volkov-Pankratov(VP) states that coexist with the chiral ones. Here, we investigate these VP states in the framework of Weyl semimetals, namely their density of states and magneto-optical response. We find the selection rules corresponding to opti…
Bulk-surface correspondence in Weyl semimetals assures the formation of topological "Fermi-arc" surface bands whose existence is guaranteed by bulk Weyl nodes. By investigating three distinct surface terminations of the ferromagnetic semimetal Co3Sn2S2 we verify spectroscopically its classification as a time reversal symmetry broken Weyl semimetal. We show that the distinct surface potentials imposed by three different terminations modify the Fermi-arc contour and Weyl node connectivity. On the Sn surface we identify intra-Brillouin zone Weyl node connectivity of Fermi-arcs, while on Co termin…
For conventional topological phases, the boundary gapless modes are determined by bulk topological invariants. Based on developing an analytic method to solve higher-order boundary modes, we present $PT$-invariant $2$D topological insulators and $3$D topological semimetals that go beyond this bulk-boundary correspondence framework. With unchanged bulk topological invariant, their first-order boundaries undergo transitions separating different phases with second-order-boundary zero-modes. For the $2$D topological insulator, the helical edge modes appear at the transition point for two second-or…
Using a systematic relation between topological gapless phases in three dimensions and topological gapped phases in two dimensions, we identify four types of higher-order topological semimetals or nodal superconductors (HOTS), hosting (i) flat zero-energy "Fermi arcs" at crystal hinges, (ii) flat zero-energy hinge arcs coexisting with surface Dirac cones, (iii) chiral or helical hinge modes, or (iv) flat zero-energy hinge arcs connecting nodes only at finite momentum. Bulk-boundary correspondence relates the hinge states to the bulk topology protecting the nodal point or loop. We classify all …
We introduce a two-band model of three-dimensional nodal line semimetals, the Fermi surface of which at half-filling may form various one-dimensional configurations of different topology. We study the symmetries and "drumhead" surface states of the model, and find that the transitions between different configurations, namely, the Lifshitz transitions, can be identified solely by the number of gap-closing points on some high-symmetry planes in the Brillouin zone. A global phase diagram of this model is also obtained accordingly. We then investigate the effect of some extra terms analogous to a …
Three-dimensional topological semimetals come in different variants, either containing Weyl points or Dirac lines. Here we describe a more complicated momentum-space topological defect where several separate Dirac lines connect with each other, forming a momentum-space equivalent of the real-space nexus considered before for Helium-3. Close to the nexus the Dirac lines exhibit a transition from type I to type II lines. We consider a general model of stacked honeycomb lattices with the symmetry of Bernal (AB) stacked graphite and show that the structural mirror symmetries in such systems protec…
Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
In a topological semimetal with Dirac or Weyl points, the bulk edge correspondence principle predicts a gapless edge mode if the essential symmetry is still preserved at the surface. The detection of such topological surface state has been considered as the fingerprint prove for crystals with nontrivial topological bulk band. On the contrary, it has been proposed that even with symmetry broken at the surface, a new surface band can emerge in nonsymmorphic topological semimetals. The symmetry reduction at the surface lifts the bulk band degeneracies, produces an unusual floating surface band wi…
The existence of the magnetostatic surface spin waves in ferromagnets, known as Damon-Eshbach mode, was recently demonstrated to originate from the topology of the dipole-dipole interaction. In this work, we study the topological characteristics of magnons in easy-axis antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. The dipolar spin waves are found to be, driven by the dipole-dipole interaction, in a topological nodal-line semimetal phase, which hosts Damon-Eshbach-type surface modes due to the bulk-edge correspondence. The long wavelength character of dipolar spin waves makes our proposal valid fo…
We theoretically analyze the Fano interference in a single impurity multi-Weyl semimetal hybrid system and show the emergence of the topological charge Fano effect in the bulk local density of states. In multi-Weyl semimetals, the number of Fermi arcs at the system boundaries is determined by the topological charge $J$, a direct consequence of the "bulk-boundary" correspondence principle. Analogously, we find that $J$ also modulates the bulk Fano profile of the system with an embedded quantum impurity. Thus, by increasing $J$, the Fano lineshape evolves from resonant, typical for $J=1$ (single…
Weyl semimetals are emerging to become a new class of quantum-material platform for various novel phenomena. Especially, the Weyl orbit made from surface Fermi arcs and bulk relativistic states is expected to play a key role in magnetotransport, leading even to a three-dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE). It is experimentally and theoretically important although yet unclear whether it bears essentially the same phenomenon as the conventional two-dimensional QHE. We discover an unconventional fully three-dimensional anisotropy in the quantum transport under magnetic field. Strong suppression …
Topological band structures in electronic systems like topological insulators and semimetals give rise to highly unusual physical properties. Analogous topological effects have also been discussed in bosonic systems, but the novel phenomena typically occur only when the system is excited by finite-frequency probes. A mapping recently proposed by Kane and Lubensky [Nat. Phys. 10, 39 (2014)], however, establishes a closer correspondence. It relates the zero-frequency excitations of mechanical systems to topological zero modes of fermions that appear at the edges of an otherwise gapped system. He…
Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have recently attracted a great deal of attention as they provide condensed matter realization of chiral anomaly, feature topologically protected Fermi arc surface states and sustain sharp chiral Weyl quasiparticles up to a critical disorder at which a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT) drives the system into a metallic phase. We here numerically demonstrate that with increasing strength of disorder the Fermi arc gradually looses its sharpness, and close to the WSM-metal QPT it completely dissolves into the metallic bath of the bulk. Predicted topological nature o…
Weyl semimetals are expected to open up new horizons in physics and materials science because they provide the first realization of Weyl fermions and exhibit protected Fermi arc surface states. However, they had been found to be extremely rare in nature. Recently, a family of compounds, consisting of TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP was predicted as Weyl semimetal candidates. Here, we experimentally realize a Weyl semimetal state in TaP. Using photoemission spectroscopy, we directly observe the Weyl fermion cones and nodes in the bulk and the Fermi arcs on the surface. Moreover, we find that the surfac…
We consider the properties of the type II Weyl semimetals at low temperatures basing on the particular tight - binding model. In the presence of electric field directed along the line connecting the Weyl points of opposite chirality the occupied states flow along this axis giving rise to the creation of electron - hole pairs. The electrons belong to a vicinity of one of the two type II Weyl points while the holes belong to the vicinity of the other. This process may be considered as the manifestation of the chiral anomaly that exists without any external magnetic field. It may be observed expe…
The existence of $1/2$ modes in the entanglement spectrum (ES) has been shown to be a powerful quantum-informative signature of boundary states of gapped topological phases of matter, e.g., topological insulators and topological superconductors, where the finite bulk gap allows us to establish a crystal-clear correspondence between $1/2$ modes and boundary states. Here we investigate the recently proposed higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSM), where bulk supports gapless higher-order Weyl nodes and boundary supports hinge arcs and Fermi arcs. We find that the aim of unambiguously identifying hi…
The bulk-edge correspondence (BEC) refers to a one-to-one relation between the bulk and edge properties ubiquitous in topologically nontrivial systems. Depending on the setup, BEC manifests in different forms and govern the spectral and transport properties of topological insulators and semimetals. Although the topological pump is theoretically old, BEC in the pump has been established just recently [1] motivated by the state-of-the-art experiments using cold atoms [2,3]. The center of mass (CM) of a system with boundaries shows a sequence of quantized jumps in the adiabatic limit associated w…
The half-quantized Hall conductance is characteristic of quantum systems with parity anomaly. Here we investigate topological and transport properties of a class of parity anomalous semimetals, in which massive Dirac fermions coexist with massless Dirac fermions in momentum space or real space, and uncovered a distinct bulk-edge correspondence that the half-quantized Hall effect is realized via the bulk massless Dirac fermions while the nontrivial Berry curvature is provided by the massive Dirac fermions. The spatial distribution of the edge current decays away from the boundary in a power law…
Triple nodal points are degeneracies of energy bands in momentum space at which three Hamiltonian eigenstates coalesce at a single eigenenergy. For spinless particles, the stability of a triple nodal point requires two ingredients: rotation symmetry of order three, four or six; combined with mirror or space-time-inversion symmetry. However, despite ample studies of their classification, robust boundary signatures of triple nodal points have until now remained elusive. In this work, we first show that pairs of triple nodal points in semimetals and metals can be characterized by Stiefel-Whitney …
One-dimensional (1D) gapless hinge states are predicated in the three-dimensional (3D) higher-order topological insulators and topological semimetals, because of the higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence. Nevertheless, the topologically protected property of the hinge states is still not demonstrated so far, because it is not accessible by conventional methods, such as spectroscopy experiments and quantum oscillations. Here, we reveal the topological nature of hinge states in the higher-order topological semimetal Cd3As2 nanoplate through spin potentiometric measurements. The results of cu…
We present the {\em (symmetry-incorporating) formalism of general continuum models with boundary conditions} and apply it to the model with the minimal number of degrees of freedom necessary to have a well-defined boundary: a model with a two-component wave function and a linear-in-momentum Hamiltonian. We derive the most general forms (class A) of both the Hamiltonian and boundary condition in 1D (insulator), 2D (quantum anomalous Hall insulator), and 3D (Weyl node) and analytically calculate and explore the corresponding general bound/edge/surface-state structures. In 1D, one bound state exi…
