We review our recent results on Anderson localization in systems of two interacting particles coupled by contact interactions. Based on an exact mapping to an effective single-particle problem, we numerically investigate the occurrence of metal-insulator phase transitions for the pair in two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) disordered lattices. In two dimensions, we find that interactions cause an exponential enhancement of the pair localization length with respect to its single-particle counterpart, but do not induce a delocalization transition. In particular we show that previous claims of 2D interaction-induced Anderson transitions are the results of strong finite-size effects. In three dimensions we find that the pair undergoes a metal-insulator transition belonging to the same (orthogonal) universality class of the noninteracting model. We then explore the phase diagram in the space of energy E, disorder W and interaction strength U, which reveals a rich and counterintuitive structure, endowed with multiple metallic and insulating phases. We point out that this phenomenon originates from the molecular and scattering-like nature of the pair states available at given energy and disorder strength.
We investigate Anderson localization of two particles moving in a two-dimensional (2D) disordered lattice and coupled by contact interactions. Based on transmission-amplitude calculations for relatively large strip-shaped grids, we find that all pair states are localized in lattices of infinite size. In particular, we show that previous claims of an interaction-induced mobility edge are biased by severe finite-size effects. The localization length of a pair with zero total energy exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the interaction strength, characterized by an exponential enhance…
Although topological Anderson insulator has been predicted in 2009, the lasting investigations of this disorder established nontrivial state results in only two experimental observations in cold atoms [Science, {\bf 362 },929 (2018)] and in photonic crystals [Nature, {\bf 560}, 461 (2018)] recently. In this paper, we study the topological Anderson transition in electric circuits. By arranging capacitor and inductor network, we construct a disordered Haldane model. Specially, the disorder is introduced by the grounding inductors with random inductance. Based on non-commutative geometry method a…
Dyson insulators with random hoppings in a lattice approach localization faster compared to the usual Anderson insulators with site disorder. For even-$N$ lattice sites the Dyson insulators mimic topological insulators with a pseudo-gap at the band center and the energy-level statistics obtained via the $P(S)$ distribution is of an intermediate type close to the Anderson localized Poisson limit. For odd-$N$ level-repulsion and Wigner statistics appears as in the quasi-metallic regime of $2D$ Anderson insulators, plus a single $E=0$ mode protected by chiral symmetry. The distribution of the par…
Non-interacting systems with bounded disorder have been shown to exhibit sharp density of states peaks at the band edge which coincide with an energy range of abruptly suppressed localization. Recent work has shown that these features also occur in the presence of on-site interactions in ensembles of two-site Anderson-Hubbard systems at half filling. Here we demonstrate that this effect in interacting systems persists away from half filling, and moreover that energy regions with suppressed localization continue to appear in ensembles of larger systems despite a loss of sharp features in the de…
We study the real-time dynamics of a two-dimensional Anderson--Hubbard model using nonequilibrium self-consistent perturbation theory within the second-Born approximation. When compared with exact diagonalization performed on small clusters, we demonstrate that for strong disorder this technique approaches the exact result on all available timescales, while for intermediate disorder, in the vicinity of the many-body localization transition, it produces quantitatively accurate results up to nontrivial times. Our method allows for the treatment of system sizes inaccessible by any numerically exa…
The topological Anderson and Mott insulators are two phases that have so far been separately and widely explored beyond topological band insulators. Here we combine the two seemingly different topological phases into a system of spin-1/2 interacting fermionic atoms in a disordered optical lattice. We find that the topological Anderson and Mott insulators in the noninteracting and clean limits can be adiabatically connected without gap closing in the phase diagram of our model. Lying between the two phases, we uncover a disordered correlated topological insulator, which is induced from a trivia…
We investigate spectral correlations in quasi one-dimensional Anderson insulators with broken time-reversal symmetry. While energy levels are uncorrelated in the thermodynamic limit of infinite wire-length, some correlations remain in finite-size Anderson insulators. Asymptotic behaviors of level-level correlations in these systems are known in the large- and small-frequency limits, corresponding to the regime of classical diffusive dynamics and the deep quantum regime of strong Anderson localization. Employing non-perturbative methods and a mapping to the Coulomb-scattering problem, recently …
Time-periodic (Floquet) drive can give rise to novel symmetry breaking and topological phases of matter. Recently, we showed that a quintessential Floquet topological phase known as the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator is stable to noise on the timing of its Floquet drive. Here, we perturb the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator at a single incommensurate frequency, resulting in a quasiperiodic 2-tone drive. Our numerics indicate that a robust topological phase survives at weak noise with topological pumping that is more stable than the case of white noise. Within the topological phase, w…
In the supplemental materials we justify our choice of the number of Chebychev moments used within the kernel polynomial method, show some preliminary results for the large coupling behavior, discuss possible correlation effects in the local density of states, estimate the spin relaxation length and introduce the goodness of fit probability that is used to assess the quality of the fits.
Although quantum phase transitions involved with Anderson localization had been investigated for more than a half century, the role of spin polarization in these metal-insulator transitions has not been clearly addressed as a function of both the range of interactions and energy scales. Based on the Anderson-Hartree-Fock study, we reveal that the spin polarization has nothing to do with Anderson metal-insulator transitions in three dimensions as far as effective interactions between electrons are long-ranged Coulomb type. On the other hand, we find that metal-insulator transitions appear with …
Disorder and non-Hermiticity dramatically impact the topological and localization properties of a quantum system, giving rise to intriguing quantum states of matter. The rich interplay of disorder, non-Hermiticity, and topology is epitomized by the recently proposed non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulator that hosts a plethora of exotic phenomena. Here we experimentally simulate the non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulator using disordered photonic quantum walks, and characterize its localization and topological properties. In particular, we focus on the competition between Anderson l…
In summary, we investigated the role of Coulomb interactions in the nature of eigenfunction multifractality of an Anderson metal-insulator transition, based on the Hartree-Fock approximation and the Ewald summation technique. As a result, we showed that two types of mobility edges appear near the Fermi energy and at a high energy, respectively, where the low-energy mobility edge results from Coulomb interactions while the high-energy one is nothing but the mobility edge of the Anderson localization transition without electron correlations. Indeed, not only multifractal scaling exponents but al…
Distinguishing the dynamics of an Anderson insulator from a Many-Body Localized (MBL) phase is an experimentally challenging task. In this work, we propose a method based on machine learning techniques to analyze experimental snapshot data to separate the two phases. We show how to train $3D$ convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using space-time Fock-state snapshots, allowing us to obtain dynamic information about the system. We benchmark our method on a paradigmatic model showing MBL ($t-V$ model with quenched disorder), where we obtain a classification accuracy of $\approx 80 \%$ between an …
Particles in space periodic potentials constitute standard models for investigation of crystalline phenomena in solid state physics. Time periodicity of periodically driven systems is a close analogue of space periodicity of solid state crystals. There is an intriguing question if solid state phenomena can be observed in the time domain. Here we show that wave-packets localized on resonant classical trajectories of periodically driven systems are ideal elements to realize Anderson localization or Mott insulator phase in the time domain. Uniform superpositions of the wave-packets form stationar…
We study the dynamical behavior of the Anderson insulator in the presence of a local noise. We show that the noise induces logarithmically slow energy and entanglement growth, until the system reaches an infinite-temperature state, where both quantities saturate to extensive values. The saturation value of the entanglement entropy approaches the average entanglement entropy over all possible product states. At infinite temperature, we find that a density excitation spreads logarithmically with time, without any signs of asymptotic diffusive behavior. In addition, we provide a theoretical pictu…
It has been proposed that the states of fully many-body localized systems can be described in terms of conserved local pseudospins. Due to the multitude of ways to define these, the explicit identification of the optimally local pseudospins in specific systems is non-trivial. Given continuing intense interest in the role of disorder in strongly correlated systems, we consider the disordered Hubbard model. Focusing on a two-site system, we track the evolution of the optimally localized pseudospins as hopping and interactions are varied to move the system away from the trivially localized atomic…
After Anderson's prediction of disorder-induced insulating behavior, extensive work found no singularities in the density of states of localized systems. However, Johri and Bhatt recently uncovered the existence of a non-analyticity in the density of states near the band edge of non-interacting systems with bounded disorder, in an energy range outside that captured by previous work. Moreover, this feature marks the boundary of an energy range in which the localization is sharply suppressed. Given strong current interest in the effect of interactions on disordered systems, we explore here the e…
We investigate the presence of percolating states in disordered two-dimensional topological insulators. In particular, we uncover a close connection between these states and the so-called topological Anderson insulator (TAI), which is a topologically non-trivial phase induced by the presence of disorder. The decay of this phase could previously be connected to a delocalization of bulk states with increasing disorder strength. In this work we identify this delocalization to be the result of a percolation transition of states that circumnavigate the hills of the bulk disorder potential.
We show that the coherent forward scattering (CFS) interference peak amplitude sharply jumps from zero to a finite value upon crossing a metal-insulator transition. Extensive numerical simulations reveal that the CFS peak contrast obeys the one-parameter scaling hypothesis and gives access to the critical exponents of the transition. We also discover that the critical CFS peak directly controls the spectral compressibility at the transition where eigenfunctions are multifractal, and we demonstrate the universality of this property with respect to various types of disorder.
Many-body localization (MBL) is an example of a dynamical phase of matter that avoids thermalization. While the MBL phase is robust to weak local perturbations, the fate of an MBL system coupled to a thermalizing quantum system that represents a "heat bath" is an open question that is actively investigated theoretically and experimentally. In this work we consider the stability of an Anderson insulator with a finite density of particles interacting with a single mobile impurity -- a small quantum bath. We give perturbative arguments that support the stability of localization in the strong inte…
We study the effect of disorder on the semimetal -- Mott insulator transition in the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, a system that features vanishing density of states at the Fermi level. Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we characterize various phases in terms of the bulk-limit antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter, compressibility, and temperature-dependent DC conductivity. In the clean limit, our data are consistent with previous results showing a single quantum critical point separating the semi-metallic and AF Mott insulating phases. With the p…
Non-Hermitian systems can exhibit unique topological and localization properties. Here we elucidate the non-Hermitian effects on disordered topological systems by studying a non-Hermitian disordered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with nonreciprocal hoppings. We show that the non-Hermiticity can enhance the topological phase against disorders by increasing energy gaps. Moreover, we uncover a topological phase which emerges only under both moderate non-Hermiticity and disorders, and is characterized by localized insulating bulk states with a disorder-averaged winding number and zero-energy edge mode…
Different disorders lead to various localization and topological phenomena in condensed matter and artificial systems. Here we study the topological and localization properties in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with spatially correlated random binary disorders. It is found that random binary disorders can induce the topological Anderson insulating phase from the trivial insulator in various parameter regions. The topological Anderson insulators are characterized by the disorder-averaged winding number and localized bulk states revealed by the inverse participation ratio in both rea…
The interplay among topology, disorder, and non-Hermiticity can induce some exotic topological and localization phenomena. Here we investigate this interplay in a two-dimensional non-Hermitian disordered Chern-insulator model with two typical kinds of non-Hermiticities, the nonreciprocal hopping and on-site gain-and-loss effects. The topological phase diagrams are obtained by numerically calculating two topological invariants in the real space, which are the disorder-averaged open-bulk Chern number and the generalized Bott index, respectively. We reveal that the nonreciprocal hopping (the gain…
