This paper analyzes two classes of second order level set PDE in periodic media in the parabolic scaling. First, we study fully nonlinear geometric operators under general assumptions in dimension $d = 2$ and prove that the associated equations homogenize in this case. Next, we treat a class of quasi-linear geometric operators in arbitrary dimensions $d \geq 2$. In this setting, by adapting arguments form the study of oscillating boundary value problems, we prove that the effective coefficients are generically discontinuous in all dimensions $d \geq 3$. This necessitates a study of level set PDE driven by operators that are discontinuous at every rational direction on the sphere. We prove that, in fact, the effective operators so obtained do have a comparison principle and, thus, homogenization occurs. Finally, we investigate the connection between the effective mobility obtained in the quasi-linear case and linear response, drawing a connection between our results and those obtained in the hyperbolic scaling.
Many time-dependent linear partial differential equations of mathematical physics and continuum mechanics can be phrased in the form of an abstract evolutionary system defined on a Hilbert space. In this paper we discuss a general framework for homogenization (periodic and stochastic) of such systems. The method combines a unified Hilbert space approach to evolutionary systems with an operator-theoretic reformulation of the well-established periodic unfolding method in homogenization. Regarding the latter, we introduce a well-structured family of unitary operators on a Hilbert space that allow…
For microscale heterogeneous PDEs, this article further develops novel theory and methodology for their macroscale mathematical/asymptotic homogenization. This article specifically encompasses the case of quasi-periodic heterogeneity with finite scale separation: no scale separation limit is required. Dynamical systems theory frames the homogenization as a slow manifold of the ensemble of all phase-shifts of the heterogeneity. Depending upon any perceived scale separation within the quasi-periodic heterogeneity, the homogenization may be done in either one step, or two sequential steps: the re…
In this article we are interested in quantitative homogenization results for linear elliptic equations in the non-stationary situation of a straight interface between two heterogenous media. This extends the previous work [Josien, 2019] to a substantially more general setting, in which the surrounding heterogeneous media may be periodic or random stationary and ergodic. Our main result is a quantification of the sublinearity of a homogenization corrector adapted to the interface, which we construct using an improved version of the method developed in [Fischer and Raithel, 2017]. This quantific…
We obtain the first quantitative stochastic homogenization result for reaction-diffusion equations, for ignition reactions in dimensions $d\le 3$ that either have finite ranges of dependence or are close enough to such reactions, and for solutions with initial data that approximate characteristic functions of general convex sets. We show algebraic rate of convergence of these solutions to their homogenized limits, which are (discontinuous) viscosity solutions of certain related Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
Quasiperiodic media is a class of almost periodic media which is generated from periodic media through a "cut and project" procedure. Bloch waves are typically defined through a direct integral decomposition of periodic operators. A suitable direct integral decomposition is not available for almost periodic operators. To remedy this, we lift an almost periodic operator to a degenerate periodic operator in higher dimensions. Approximate Bloch waves are obtained for a regularized version of the degenerate equation. Homogenized coefficients for quasiperiodic media are determined in terms of the f…
We study a concentration and homogenization problem modelling electrical conduction in a composite material. The novelty of the problem is due to the specific scaling of the physical quantities characterizing the dielectric component of the composite. This leads to the appearance of a peculiar displacement current governed by a Laplace-Beltrami pseudo-parabolic equation. This pseudo-parabolic character is present also in the homogenized equation, which is obtained by the unfolding technique.
In this paper we extend the homogenization results obtained in (G. Allaire, A. Mikelić, A. Piatnitski, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010), 123103) for a system of partial differential equations describing the transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid periodic porous medium, to the case of random disperse porous media. We present a study of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a random medium, establish convergence of the stochastic homogenization procedure and prove well-posedness of the two-scale homogenized equations. In addition, after separating scal…
By using dimension reduction and homogenization techniques, we study the steady flow of an incompresible viscoplastic Bingham fluid in a thin porous medium. A main feature of our study is the dependence of the yield stress of the Bingham fluid on the small parameters describing the geometry of the thin porous medium under consideration. Three different problems are obtained in the limit when the small parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, following the ratio between the height $\varepsilon$ of the porous medium and the relative dimension $a_\varepsilon$ of its periodically distributed pores. …
The notion of periodic two-scale convergence and the method of periodic unfolding are prominent and useful tools in multiscale modeling and analysis of PDEs with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. In this paper we are interested in the theory of stochastic homogenization for continuum mechanical models in form of PDEs with random coefficients, describing random heterogeneous materials. The notion of periodic two-scale convergence has been extended in different ways to the stochastic case. In this work we introduce a stochastic unfolding method that features many similarities to periodi…
We investigate a reaction-diffusion problem in a two-component porous medium with a nonlinear interface condition between the different components. One component is connected and the other one is disconnected. The ratio between the microscopic pore scale and the size of the whole domain is described by the small parameter $ε$. On the interface between the components we consider a dynamic Wentzell-boundary condition, where the normal fluxes from the bulk-domains are given by a reaction-diffusion equation for the traces of the bulk-solutions, including nonlinear reaction-kinetics depending on th…
We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analys…
Periodic operators over a component domain and homogenization of some class of quasi-linear elliptic problems in two-component domain with interfacial resistance
We study Bloch wave homogenization of periodically heterogeneous media with fourth order singular perturbations. We recover different homogenization regimes depending on the relative strength of the singular perturbation and length scale of the periodic heterogeneity. The homogenized tensor is obtained in terms of the first Bloch eigenvalue. The higher Bloch modes do not contribute to the homogenization limit.
The paper deals with homogenization of a model problem describing an immiscible compressible two-phase flow in random statistically homogeneous porous media. We derive the effective (macroscopic) problem and prove the convergence of solutions. Our approach relies on stochastic two-scale convergence techniques, the realization-wise notion of stochastic two-scale convergence being used. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness arguments.
Bloch wave homogenization is a spectral method for obtaining effective coefficients for periodically heterogeneous media. This method hinges on the direct integral decomposition of periodic operators, which is not available in a suitable form for almost periodic operators. In particular, the notion of Bloch eigenvalues and eigenvectors does not exist for almost periodic operators. However, we are able to recover the homogenization result in this case, by employing a sequence of periodic approximations to almost periodic operators. We also establish a rate of convergence for approximations of h…
This paper discusses properties of periodic functions, focusing on (systems of) partial differential equations with periodicity boundary conditions, called "cellular problems". These cellular problems arise naturally from the asymptotic study of PDEs with rapidly oscillating coefficients; this study is called "homogenization theory". We believe the present paper may shed a new light on well-known concepts, for instance by showing hidden links between Green's formula, the div-curl lemma and Donati's representation theorem. We state and prove three extensions of Donati's Theorem adapted to the p…
A family of effective equations for wave propagation in periodic media for arbitrary timescales $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-α})$, where $\varepsilon\ll1$ is the period of the tensor describing the medium, is proposed. The well-posedness of the effective equations of the family is ensured without requiring a regularization process as in previous models [A. Benoit and A. Gloria, arXiv:1701.08600, 2017], [G. Allaire, A. Lamacz, and J. Rauch, arXiv:1803.09455, 2018]. The effective solutions in the family are proved to be $\varepsilon$ close to the original wave in a norm equivalent to the $L^\infty…
The paper deals with periodic homogenization problem for a para\-bo\-lic equation whose elliptic part is a convolution type operator with rapidly oscillating coefficients. It is assumed that the coefficients are rapidly oscillating periodic functions both in spatial and temporal variables and that the scaling is diffusive that is the scaling factor of the temporal variable is equal to the square of the scaling factor of the spatial variable. Under the assumption that the convolution kernel has a finite second moment and that the operator is symmetric in spatial variables we show that the studi…
We investigate the PDE system resulting from even electromechanical coupling in elastomers. Assuming a periodic microstructure and a periodic distribution of micro-charges of a prescribed order, we derive the homogenized system. The results depend crucially on periodicity (or adequate randomness) and on the type of microstructure under consideration. We also show electric enhancement if the charges are carefully tailored to the homogenized electric field and explicit that enhancement, as well as the corresponding electrostrictive enhancement in a dilute regime.
