This work is devoted to the long-standing open problem of homogenization of 2D perfect incompressible fluid flows, such as the 2D Euler equations with impermeable inclusions modeling a porous medium, and such as the lake equations. The main difficulty is the homogenization of the transport equation for the associated fluid vorticity. In particular, a localization phenomenon for the vorticity could in principle occur, which would rule out the separation of scales. Our approach combines classical results from different fields to prevent such phenomena and to prove homogenization towards variants of the Euler and lake equations: we rely in particular on the homogenization theory for elliptic equations with stiff inclusions, on criteria for unique ergodicity of dynamical systems, and on complex analysis in form of extensions of the Radó-Kneser-Choquet theorem.
The paper deals with the homogenization of reaction-diffusion equations with large reaction terms in a multi-scale porous medium. We assume that the fractures and pores are equidistributed and that the coefficients of the equations are periodic. Using the multi-scale convergence method, we derive a homogenization result whose limit problem is defined on a fixed domain and is of convection-diffusion-reaction type.
In this paper we establish a homogenization result for a doubly nonlinear parabolic system arising from the hygro-thermo-chemical processes in porous media taking into account memory phenomena. We present a meso-scale model of the composite (heterogeneous) material where each component is considered as a porous system and the voids of the skeleton are partially saturated with liquid water. It is shown that the solution of the meso-scale problem is two-scale convergent to that of the upscaled problem as the spatial parameter goes to zero.
By using dimension reduction and homogenization techniques, we study the steady flow of an incompresible viscoplastic Bingham fluid in a thin porous medium. A main feature of our study is the dependence of the yield stress of the Bingham fluid on the small parameters describing the geometry of the thin porous medium under consideration. Three different problems are obtained in the limit when the small parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, following the ratio between the height $\varepsilon$ of the porous medium and the relative dimension $a_\varepsilon$ of its periodically distributed pores. …
In this paper we extend the homogenization results obtained in (G. Allaire, A. Mikelić, A. Piatnitski, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010), 123103) for a system of partial differential equations describing the transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid periodic porous medium, to the case of random disperse porous media. We present a study of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a random medium, establish convergence of the stochastic homogenization procedure and prove well-posedness of the two-scale homogenized equations. In addition, after separating scal…
This paper concerns a space-time homogenization limit of nonnegative weak solutions to porous medium equations. In particular, the so-called homogenized matrix will be characterized in terms of solutions to cell problems, which drastically vary in a scaling parameter $r > 0$. A similar problem has already been studied in [1], where the growth of the power nonlinearity is strictly restricted due to some substantial obstacles. In the present paper, such obstacles will be overcome by developing local uniform estimates for the gradients of nonnegative weak solutions.
We consider the homogenization problem for general porous medium type equations of the form $u_t=\D f(x,\frac{x}{\ve}, u)$. The pressure function $f(x,y,\cdot)$ may be of two different types. In the type~1 case, $f(x,y,\cdot)$ is a general strictly increasing function; this is a mildly degenerate case. In the type~2 case, $f(x,y,\cdot)$ has the form $h(x,y)F(u)+S(x,y)$, where $F(u)$ is just a nondecreasing function; this is a strongly degenerate case. We address the initial-boundary value problem for a general, bounded or unbounded, domain $\Om$, with null (or, more generally, steady) pressure…
A phase-field model for two-phase immiscible, incompressible porous media flow with surface tension effects is considered. The pore-scale model consists of a strongly coupled system of Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations. The fluids are separated by an evolving diffuse interface of a finite width depending on the scale parameter $\varepsilon$ in the considered model. At first the well-posedness of a coupled system of partial differential equations at micro scale is investigated. We obtained the homogenized equations for the microscopic model via unfolding operator and two-scale convergence approach…
We consider the homogenization problem for the stochastic porous-medium type equation $\p_{t} u^ε=Δf\left(T\left(\frac{x}{\ep}\right)\om,u^\ep\right)$, with a well-prepared initial datum, where $f(T(y)\om,u)$ is a stationary process, increasing in $u$, on a given probability space $(\Om, \mathcal{F}, μ)$ endowed with an ergodic dynamical system $\{T(y)\,:\,y\in\R^N\}$. Differently from the previous literature \cite{afs,fs}, here we do not assume $\Om$ compact. We first show that the weak solution $u^\ep$ satisfies a kinetic formulation of the equation, then we exploit the theory of "stochastic…
We investigate a reaction-diffusion problem in a two-component porous medium with a nonlinear interface condition between the different components. One component is connected and the other one is disconnected. The ratio between the microscopic pore scale and the size of the whole domain is described by the small parameter $ε$. On the interface between the components we consider a dynamic Wentzell-boundary condition, where the normal fluxes from the bulk-domains are given by a reaction-diffusion equation for the traces of the bulk-solutions, including nonlinear reaction-kinetics depending on th…
In this paper we employ homogenization techniques to provide a rigorous derivation of the Darcy scale model for precipitation and dissolution in porous media proposed in [19]. The starting point is the pore scale model in [12], which is a coupled system of evolution equations, involving a parabolic equation and an ordinary differential equation. The former models ion transport and is defined in a periodically perforated medium. It is further coupled through the boundary conditions to the latter, defined on the boundaries of the perforations and modelling the dissolution and precipitation of th…
We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analys…
In this paper we study the deterministic homogenization problems for unsteady Navier-Stokes type equations, on one hand in an open set Ω of R^{N}, on the other hand in porous media Ω^{ε}. In the second case, the equations are classical unsteady Navier-Stokes one, and the porous media are periodic
The paper deals with homogenization of a model problem describing an immiscible compressible two-phase flow in random statistically homogeneous porous media. We derive the effective (macroscopic) problem and prove the convergence of solutions. Our approach relies on stochastic two-scale convergence techniques, the realization-wise notion of stochastic two-scale convergence being used. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness arguments.
We consider the homogenization of a model of reactive flows through periodic porous media involving a single solute which can be absorbed and desorbed on the pore boundaries. This is a system of two convection-diffusion equations, one in the bulk and one on the pore boundaries, coupled by an exchange reaction term. The novelty of our work is to consider a nonlinear reaction term, a so-called Langmuir isotherm, in an asymptotic regime of strong convection. We therefore generalize previous works on a similar linear model [G. Allaire et al, Chemical Engineering Science, 65 (2010), pp.2292-2300], …
In this paper, periodic homogenization of a steady fluid flow in fissured porous solids with imperfect interfacial contact is performed via two-scale asymptotic method.
We consider a nonlinear drift-diffusion system for multiple charged species in a porous medium in 2D and 3D with periodic microstructure. The system consists of a transport equation for the concentration of the species and Poisson's equation for the electric potential. The diffusion terms depend nonlinearly on the concentrations. We consider non-homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the electric potential. The aim is the rigorous derivation of an effective (homogenized) model in the limit when the scale parameter $ε$ tends to zero. This is based on uniform $\textit{a priori}$ estimates fo…
We present modeling of the incompressible viscous flows in the domain containing an unconfined fluid and a porous medium. For such setting a rigorous derivation of the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition was undertaken by Jäger and Mikelić [SIAM J. Appl. Math. \rm 60 (2000), p. 1111-1127] using the homogenization method. So far the interface law for the pressure was conceived and confirmed only numerically. In this article we justify rigorously the pressure jump condition using the corresponding boundary layer.
We consider a linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of elastic porous body and fluid occupying porous space. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic and a characteristic time of processes is small enough. Such kind of models may describe, for example, hydraulic fracturing or acoustic or seismic waves propagation. As the results, we derive different types of homogenized equations …
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of elastic porous body and fluid occupying porous space is considered. Although the problem is linear, it is very hard to tackle due to the fact that its main differential equations involve non-smooth oscillatory coefficients, both big and small, under the differentiation operators. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results, w…
A novel regularized fracture model for crack propagation in porous media is proposed. Our model is obtained through homogenization theory and formal asymptotic expansions. We start with a regularized quasi-static fracture model posed in a periodically perforated domain obtained by periodic extension of a re-scaled unit cell with a hole. This setup allows us to write two separated minimality conditions for the primary (displacement) and secondary variables plus a balance of energy relation. Then we apply the usual asymptotic expansion matching to deduce limit relations when the re-scaling param…
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of a thermoelastic porous body with a sufficiently large Lame's constants (absolutelty rigid body) and a thermofluid, occupying porous space, is considered. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results we derive Darcy's system of filtration for thermofluid, depending on ratios between physical parameters. The proofs are based on …
This article studies the homogenization of hyperbolic-parabolic equations in porous media with tiny holes. We assume that the holes are periodically distributed and that the coefficients of the equations are periodic. Using the multi-scale convergence method, we derive a homogenization result whose limit problem is defined on a fixed domain and is of the same type as the problem with oscillating coefficients.
By using the unfolding operators for periodic homogenization, we give a general compactness result for a class of functions defined on bounded domains presenting perforations of two different size. Then we apply this result to the homogenization of the flow of a Bingham fluid in a porous medium with solid obstacles of different size. Next we give the interpretation of the limit problem in term of a non linear Darcy law.
The paper presents two-scale numerical algorithms for stress-strain analysis of porous media featured by self-contact at pore level. The porosity is constituted as a periodic lattice generated by a representative cell consisting of elastic skeleton, rigid inclusion and a void pore. Unilateral frictionless contact is considered between opposing surfaces of the pore. For the homogenized model derived in our previous work, we justify incremental formulations and propose several variants of two-scale algorithms which commute iteratively solving of the micro- and the macro-level contact subproblems…
This investigation develops basic methods for the multi-scale analysis for problems in thin porous layers. More precisely, we provide tools for the homogenization in case of "tangentially" periodic structures and dimensional reduction letting the layer thickness tend to zero proportional to the scale parameter $ε$. A crucial point is the identification of scale limits of functions $v_ε$ in subsets of function spaces characterized by uniform a priori estimates with respect to $ε$, arising for solutions of differential equations in heterogeneous media with thin layers, e.g., of a Navier-Stokes s…
Inspired by applications, we study the effect of interface slip on the effective wave propagation in poroelastic composites. The current literature on the homogenization for the poroelastic wave equations are all based on the no-slip interface condition posed on the micro-scale. However, for certain pore fluids, the no-slip conditions are known to be physically invalid. Even though there are results in a few papers regarding porous media with slip condition on the interface, they are for porous media with rigid solid matrix rather than an elastic one. For the former case, the equations for the…
We analyze the steady fluid flow in a porous medium containing a network of thin fissures i.e. width $\mathcal{O}(ε)$, where all the cracks are generated by the rigid translation of a continuous piecewise $C^{1}$ functions in a fixed direction. The phenomenon is modeled in mixed variational formulation, using the stationary Darcy's law and setting coefficients of low resistance $\mathcal{O}(ε)$ on the network. The singularities are removed performing asymptotic analysis as $ε\rightarrow 0$ which yields an analogous system hosting only tangential flow in the fissures. Finally the fissures are c…
In this study, we prove results on the weak solvability and homogenization of a microscopic semi-linear elliptic system posed in perforated media. The model presented here explores the interplay between stationary diffusion and both surface and volume chemical reactions in porous media. Our interest lies in deriving homogenization limits (upscaling) for alike systems and particularly in justifying rigorously the obtained averaged descriptions. Essentially, we prove the well-posedness of the microscopic problem ensuring also the positivity and boundedness of the involved concentrations and then…
Pseudo-parabolic equations have been used to model unsaturated fluid flow in porous media. In this paper it is shown how a pseudo-parabolic equation can be upscaled when using a spatio-temporal decomposition employed in the Peszyn'ska-Showalter-Yi paper [8]. The spatial-temporal decomposition transforms the pseudo-parabolic equation into a system containing an elliptic partial differential equation and a temporal ordinary differential equation. To strengthen our argument, the pseudo-parabolic equation has been given advection/convection/drift terms. The upscaling is done with the technique of …
We consider a multicontinuum model in porous media applications, which is described as a system of coupled flow equations. The coupling between different continua depends on many factors and its modeling is important for porous media applications. The coefficients depend on particle deposition that is described in term of a stochastic process solution of an SDE. The stochastic process is considered to be faster than the flow motion and we introduce time-space scales to model the problem. Our goal is to pass to the limit in time and space and to find an associated averaged system. This is an av…
In this paper, we develop a viscosity method for Homogenization of Nonlinear Parabolic Equations constrained by highly oscillating obstacles or Dirichlet data in perforated domains. The Dirichlet data on the perforated domain can be considered as a constraint or an obstacle. Homogenization of nonlinear eigen value problems has been also considered to control the degeneracy of the Porous medium equation in perforated domains. For the simplicity, we consider obstacles that consist of cylindrical columns distributed periodically and perforated domains with punctured balls. If the decay rate of th…
Effective Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations are derived for macroscopic ion transport in charged porous media under periodic fluid flow by an asymptotic multi-scale expansion with drift. The microscopic setting is a two-component periodic composite consisting of a dilute electrolyte continuum (described by standard PNP equations) and a continuous dielectric matrix, which is impermeable to the ions and carries a given surface charge. Four new features arise in the upscaled equations: (i) the effective ionic diffusivities and mobilities become tensors, related to the microstructure; (ii) the…
In this paper we study the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes equations in a perforated domain with multiple microstructures. First, under the assumption that the interface between subdomains is a union of Lipschitz surfaces, we show that the effective velocity and pressure are governed by a Darcy law, where the permeability matrix is piecewise constant. The key step is to prove that the effective pressure is continuous across the interface, using Tartar's method of test functions. Secondly, we establish the sharp error estimates for the convergence of the velocity and pres…

In this paper we investigate the interaction of fluid flow with a thin porous elastic layer. We consider two fluid-filled bulk domains which are separated by a thin periodically perforated layer consisting of a fluid and an elastic solid part. Thickness and periodicity of the layer are of order $ε$, where $ε$ is small compared to the size of the bulk domains. The fluid flow is described by an instationary Stokes equation and the solid via linear elasticity. The main contribution of this paper is the rigorous homogenization of the porous structure in the layer and the reduction of the layer to …
We investigate the influence of multiscale aggregation and deposition on the colloidal dynamics in a saturated porous medium. At the pore scale, the aggregation of colloids is modeled by the Smoluchowski equation. Essentially, the colloidal mass is distributed between different size clusters. We treat these clusters as different species involved in a diffusion-advection-reaction mechanism. This modeling procedure allows for different material properties to be varied between the different species, specifically the rates of diffusion, aggregation, deposition as well as the advection velocities. …
This paper is devoted to the homogenization (or upscaling) of a system of partial differential equations describing the non-ideal transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid porous medium. Realistic non-ideal effects are taken into account by an approach based on the mean spherical approximation (MSA) model which takes into account finite size ions and screening effects. We first consider equilibrium solutions in the absence of external forces. In such a case, the velocity and diffusive fluxes vanish and the equilibrium electrostatic potential is the so…
The macroscopic behavior of the solution of a coupled system of partial differential equations arising in the modeling of reaction-diffusion processes in periodic porous media is analyzed. Our mathematical model can be used for studying several metabolic processes taking place in living cells, in which biochemical species can diffuse in the cytosol and react both in the cytosol and also on the organellar membranes. The coupling of the concentrations of the biochemical species is realized via various properly scaled nonlinear reaction terms. These nonlinearities, which model, at the microscopic…
