We consider a linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of elastic porous body and fluid occupying porous space. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic and a characteristic time of processes is small enough. Such kind of models may describe, for example, hydraulic fracturing or acoustic or seismic waves propagation. As the results, we derive different types of homogenized equations involving non-isotropic Stokes system for fluid velocity coupled with acoustic equations for the solid component or different types of acoustic equations, depending on ratios between physical parameters. The proofs are based on Nguetseng's two-scale convergence method of homogenization in periodic structures.
In this paper we discuss a model describing global behavior of the two phase incompressible flow in fractured porous media. The fractured media is regarded as a porous medium consisting of two superimposed continua, a connected fracture system, which is assumed to be thin of order $\varepsilonδ$, and an $\varepsilon$-periodic system of disjoint matrix blocks. We derive global behavior of the fractured media by passing to the limit as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$ and then as the relative fracture thickness $δ\rightarrow 0$, taking into account that the permeability of the blocks is proportional t…
We describe the asymptotic behaviour of a filtration problem from a contaminated porous medium to a non-contaminated porous medium through thin vertical fissures of fixed height h>0, of random thinness of order ε and which are $ε$-periodically distributed. We compute the limit velocity of the flow and the limit flux of pollutant at the interfaces between the two porous media and the intermediate one.
We establish uniqueness of the solution of the unsteady state dam problem in the heterogeneous and rectangular case assuming the dam wet at the bottom and dry near to the top.
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of elastic porous body and fluid occupying porous space is considered. Although the problem is linear, it is very hard to tackle due to the fact that its main differential equations involve non-smooth oscillatory coefficients, both big and small, under the differentiation operators. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results, w…
We study the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid in a perforated domain. The porous medium is composed of inclusions of size $a$ separated by distances $\tilde d$ and the fluid fills the exterior. We analyse the asymptotic behavior of the fluid when $(a,\tilde d) \to (0,0)$. If the inclusions are distributed on the unit square, this issue is studied recently when $\frac{\tilde d}a$ tends to zero or infinity, leaving aside the critical case where the volume fraction of the porous medium is below its possible maximal value but non-zero. In this paper, we provide the first result in this regi…
A novel regularized fracture model for crack propagation in porous media is proposed. Our model is obtained through homogenization theory and formal asymptotic expansions. We start with a regularized quasi-static fracture model posed in a periodically perforated domain obtained by periodic extension of a re-scaled unit cell with a hole. This setup allows us to write two separated minimality conditions for the primary (displacement) and secondary variables plus a balance of energy relation. Then we apply the usual asymptotic expansion matching to deduce limit relations when the re-scaling param…
This paper concerns a space-time homogenization limit of nonnegative weak solutions to porous medium equations. In particular, the so-called homogenized matrix will be characterized in terms of solutions to cell problems, which drastically vary in a scaling parameter $r > 0$. A similar problem has already been studied in [1], where the growth of the power nonlinearity is strictly restricted due to some substantial obstacles. In the present paper, such obstacles will be overcome by developing local uniform estimates for the gradients of nonnegative weak solutions.
The Muskat problem involves filtration of two incompressible fluids throughout a porous medium. In this paper we shall discuss in 3-D the relevance of the Rayleigh-Taylor condition, and the topology of the initial interface, in order to prove its local existence in Sobolev spaces.
A phase-field model for two-phase immiscible, incompressible porous media flow with surface tension effects is considered. The pore-scale model consists of a strongly coupled system of Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations. The fluids are separated by an evolving diffuse interface of a finite width depending on the scale parameter $\varepsilon$ in the considered model. At first the well-posedness of a coupled system of partial differential equations at micro scale is investigated. We obtained the homogenized equations for the microscopic model via unfolding operator and two-scale convergence approach…
In this paper we extend the homogenization results obtained in (G. Allaire, A. Mikelić, A. Piatnitski, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010), 123103) for a system of partial differential equations describing the transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid periodic porous medium, to the case of random disperse porous media. We present a study of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a random medium, establish convergence of the stochastic homogenization procedure and prove well-posedness of the two-scale homogenized equations. In addition, after separating scal…
We study phase field equations based on the diffuse-interface approximation of general homogeneous free energy densities showing different local minima of possible equilibrium configurations in perforated/porous domains. The study of such free energies in homogeneous environments found a broad interest over the last decades and hence is now widely accepted and applied in both science and engineering. Here, we focus on strongly heterogeneous materials with perforations such as porous media. To the best of our knowledge, we present a general formal derivation of upscaled phase field equations fo…
We consider the homogenization problem for the stochastic porous-medium type equation $\p_{t} u^ε=Δf\left(T\left(\frac{x}{\ep}\right)\om,u^\ep\right)$, with a well-prepared initial datum, where $f(T(y)\om,u)$ is a stationary process, increasing in $u$, on a given probability space $(\Om, \mathcal{F}, μ)$ endowed with an ergodic dynamical system $\{T(y)\,:\,y\in\R^N\}$. Differently from the previous literature \cite{afs,fs}, here we do not assume $\Om$ compact. We first show that the weak solution $u^\ep$ satisfies a kinetic formulation of the equation, then we exploit the theory of "stochastic…
According to Biot's paper in 1956, by using the Lagrangian equations in classical mechanics, we consider a problem of the filtration of a liquid in porous elastic-deformation media whose mechanical behavior is described by the Lam'e system coupled with a hyperbolic equation. Assuming the null surface displacement on the whole boundary, we discuss an inverse source problem of determining a body force only by observation of surface traction on a suitable subdomain along a sufficiently large time interval. Our main result is a Hölder stability estimate for the inverse source problem, which is pro…
We present a three dimensional, time dependent model for bone regeneration in the presence of porous scaffolds to bridge critical size bone defects. Our approach uses homogenized quantities, thus drastically reducing computational cost compared to models resolving the microstructural scale of the scaffold. Using abstract functional relationships instead of concrete effective material properties, our model can incorporate the homogenized material tensors for a large class of scaffold microstructure designs. We prove an existence and uniqueness theorem for solutions based on a fixed point argume…
Two-scale models pose a promising approach in simulating reactive flow and transport in evolving porous media. Classically, homogenized flow and transport equations are solved on the macroscopic scale, while effective parameters are obtained from auxiliary cell problems on possibly evolving reference geometries (micro-scale). Despite their perspective success in rendering lab/field-scale simulations computationally feasible, analytic results regarding the arising two-scale bilaterally coupled system often restrict to simplified models. In this paper, we first derive smooth-dependence results c…
We study the nonlinear diffusion equation $ u_t=Δϕ(u) $ on general Euclidean domains, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We assume that $ ϕ^\prime(u) $ is bounded from below by $ |u|^{m_1-1} $ for small $ |u| $ and by $ |u|^{m_2-1} $ for large $|u|$, the two exponents $ m_1,m_2 $ being possibly different and larger than one. The equality case corresponds to the well-known porous medium equation. We establish sharp short- and long-time $ L^{q_0} $-$ L^\infty $ smoothing estimates: similar issues have widely been investigated in the literature in the last few years, but the Neumann pr…
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of a thermoelastic porous body with a sufficiently large Lame's constants (absolutelty rigid body) and a thermofluid, occupying porous space, is considered. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results we derive Darcy's system of filtration for thermofluid, depending on ratios between physical parameters. The proofs are based on …
In this paper we investigate the interaction of fluid flow with a thin porous elastic layer. We consider two fluid-filled bulk domains which are separated by a thin periodically perforated layer consisting of a fluid and an elastic solid part. Thickness and periodicity of the layer are of order $ε$, where $ε$ is small compared to the size of the bulk domains. The fluid flow is described by an instationary Stokes equation and the solid via linear elasticity. The main contribution of this paper is the rigorous homogenization of the porous structure in the layer and the reduction of the layer to …
The non-local in space two-phase Stefan problem (a prototype in phase change problems) can be formulated via a singular nonlinear parabolic integro-differential equation which admits a unique weak solution. This formulation makes Stefan problem to be part of the General Filtration Problems; a class which includes the Porous Medium Equation. In this work, we prove that the weak solutions to both Stefan and Porous Media problems are continuous.
We consider the homogenization of a model of reactive flows through periodic porous media involving a single solute which can be absorbed and desorbed on the pore boundaries. This is a system of two convection-diffusion equations, one in the bulk and one on the pore boundaries, coupled by an exchange reaction term. The novelty of our work is to consider a nonlinear reaction term, a so-called Langmuir isotherm, in an asymptotic regime of strong convection. We therefore generalize previous works on a similar linear model [G. Allaire et al, Chemical Engineering Science, 65 (2010), pp.2292-2300], …
We consider a nonlinear drift-diffusion system for multiple charged species in a porous medium in 2D and 3D with periodic microstructure. The system consists of a transport equation for the concentration of the species and Poisson's equation for the electric potential. The diffusion terms depend nonlinearly on the concentrations. We consider non-homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the electric potential. The aim is the rigorous derivation of an effective (homogenized) model in the limit when the scale parameter $ε$ tends to zero. This is based on uniform $\textit{a priori}$ estimates fo…
Derivation of macroscopic models for advection-diffusion processes in the presence of dominant heterogeneous (e.g., surface) reactions using homogenisation theory or volume averaging is often deemed unfeasible due to the strong coupling between scales that characterise such systems. In this work, we show how the upscaling can be carried out by applying and extending the methods presented in literature. The approach relies on the decomposition of the microscale concentration into a reactive component, given by the eigenfunction of the advection-diffusion operator, the associated eigenvalue whic…
Over the last few decades, phase-field equations have found increasing applicability in a wide range of mathematical-scientific fields (e.g. geometric PDEs and mean curvature flow, materials science for the study of phase transitions) but also engineering ones (e.g. as a computational tool in chemical engineering for interfacial flow studies). Here, we focus on phase-field equations in strongly heterogeneous materials with perforations such as porous media. To the best of our knowledge, we provide the first derivation of error estimates for fourth order, homogenized, and nonlinear evolution eq…
We study the nonlinear and nonlocal Cauchy problem \[ \partial_{t}u+\mathcal{L}φ(u)=0 \quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}_+,\qquad u(\cdot,0)=u_0, \] where $\mathcal{L}$ is a Lévy-type nonlocal operator with a kernel having a singularity at the origin as that of the fractional Laplacian. The nonlinearity $φ$ is nondecreasing and continuous, and the initial datum $u_0$ is assumed to be in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. For a wide class of nonlinearities, including the porous media case, $φ(u)=|u|^{m-1}u$, $m>1$, these solutions turn out to be…
Motivated by the extensive investigations of integro-differential equations on $\mathbb{R}^n$, we consider nonlocal filtration type equations with rough kernels on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions corresponding to suitable initial data. Furthermore, we obtain the large time behavior of solutions and the uniform Hölder regularity of sign-changing solutions for the porous medium type equations ($m\geq 1$). Notice that both conformal fractional operators $\mathscr{L}_{α/2}$ and pure power fractional operators $\mathscr{L}^{α/2}$ on the H…
The paper presents two-scale numerical algorithms for stress-strain analysis of porous media featured by self-contact at pore level. The porosity is constituted as a periodic lattice generated by a representative cell consisting of elastic skeleton, rigid inclusion and a void pore. Unilateral frictionless contact is considered between opposing surfaces of the pore. For the homogenized model derived in our previous work, we justify incremental formulations and propose several variants of two-scale algorithms which commute iteratively solving of the micro- and the macro-level contact subproblems…

This investigation develops basic methods for the multi-scale analysis for problems in thin porous layers. More precisely, we provide tools for the homogenization in case of "tangentially" periodic structures and dimensional reduction letting the layer thickness tend to zero proportional to the scale parameter $ε$. A crucial point is the identification of scale limits of functions $v_ε$ in subsets of function spaces characterized by uniform a priori estimates with respect to $ε$, arising for solutions of differential equations in heterogeneous media with thin layers, e.g., of a Navier-Stokes s…
In this paper, we develop a viscosity method for Homogenization of Nonlinear Parabolic Equations constrained by highly oscillating obstacles or Dirichlet data in perforated domains. The Dirichlet data on the perforated domain can be considered as a constraint or an obstacle. Homogenization of nonlinear eigen value problems has been also considered to control the degeneracy of the Porous medium equation in perforated domains. For the simplicity, we consider obstacles that consist of cylindrical columns distributed periodically and perforated domains with punctured balls. If the decay rate of th…
We study the Cauchy problem for $p$-adic nonlinear evolutionary pseudo-differential equations for complex-valued functions of a real positive time variable and p-adic spatial variables. Among the equations under consideration there is the p-adic analog of the porous medium equation (or more generally, the nonlinear filtration equation) which arise in numerous application in mathematical physics and mathematical biology. Our approach is based on the construction of a linear Markov semigroup on a p-adic ball and the proof of m-accretivity of the appropriate nonlinear operator. The latter result …
In this study, we analyze the flow filtration process of slightly compressible fluids in fractured porous media. We model the coupled fractured porous media system, where the linear Darcy flow is considered in porous media and the nonlinear Forchheimer equation is used inside the fracture. Flow in the fracture is modeled as a reduced low dimensional BVP which is coupled with an equation in the reservoir. We prove that the solution of the reduced model can serve very accurately to approximate the solution of the actual high-dimensional flow in reservoir fracture system, because the thickness of…
In this paper, we study a multiscale method for simulating a dual-continuum unsaturated flow problem within complex heterogeneous fractured porous media. Mathematically, each of the dual continua is modeled by a multiscale Richards equation (for pressure head), and these equations are coupled to one another by transfer terms. On its own, Richards equation is already a nonlinear partial differential equation, and it is exceedingly difficult to solve numerically due to the extra nonlinear dependencies involving the soil water. To deal with multiple scales, our strategy is that starting from a mi…
The Muskat problem models the filtration of two incompressible immiscible fluids of different characteristics in porous media. In this paper, we consider both the 2D and 3D setting of two fluids of different constant densities and different constant viscosities. In this situation, the related contour equations are non-local, not only in the evolution system, but also in the implicit relation between the amplitude of the vorticity and the free interface. Among other extra difficulties, no maximum principles are available for the amplitude and the slopes of the interface in $L^\infty$. We prove …
