We give a cluster algebraic description of the reduction procedure of mapping classes along a multicurve. Based on this description, we characterize pseudo-Anosov mapping classes on a general marked surface in terms of a weaker version of the uniform sign stability, generalizing the main result in the previous paper [IK20]. Moreover we axiomatize a general reduction procedure of mutation loops parametrized by a rational polyhedral cone in the tropical cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety, which includes both the reduction along a multicurve and the cluster reduction introduced in [Ish19].
The balanced superelliptic mapping class group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering in the mapping class group of the total surface. We prove that the balanced superelliptic mapping class groups with either one marked point, one boundary component, or no marked points and boundary are generated by three elements. To prove this, we also show that its liftable mapping class groups are also generated by three elements. These generating sets are minimal except for several no marked points and boundary cases.
Let $Σ$ be a surface with either boundary or marked points, equipped with an arbitrary framing. In this note we determine the action of the associated "framed mapping class group" on the homology of $Σ$ relative to its boundary (respectively marked points), describing the image as the kernel of a certain crossed homomorphism related to classical spin structures. Applying recent work of the authors, we use this to describe the monodromy action of the orbifold fundamental group of a stratum of abelian differentials on the relative periods.
The mapping class group of a genus $g$ surface $Σ_{g,1}$ with one boundary component is known to have a simple yet infinite presentation with generators given by elementary moves called Whitehead moves on so-called marked bordered fatgraphs. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm called "fatgraph Nielsen reduction" which, from the action of a mapping class $φ\in MC_{g,1}$ of $Σ_{g,1}$ on the fundamental group $π_1(Σ_{g,1})$ of $Σ_{g,1}$, determines a sequence of Whitehead moves representing $φ$ beginning at any choice of marked bordered fatgraph. As a consequence, this leads to an algorithm …
We show that the mapping class group of a handlebody of genus at least 2 (with any number of marked points or spots) is exponentially distorted in the mapping class group of its boundary surface. The same holds true for solid tori with at least two marked points or spots.
The Ptolemy groupoid is a combinatorial groupoid generated by elementary moves on marked trivalent fatgraphs with three types of relations. Through the fatgraph decomposition of Teichmüller space, the Ptolemy groupoid is a mapping class group equivariant subgroupoid of the fundamental path groupoid of Teichmüller space with a discrete set objects. In particular, it leads to an infinite, but combinatorially simple, presentation of the mapping class group of an orientable surface. In this note, we give a presentation of a full mapping class group equivariant subgroupoid of the Ptolemy groupoid o…
We investigate representations of mapping class groups of surfaces that arise from the untwisted Drinfeld double of a finite group G, focusing on surfaces without marked points or with one marked point. We obtain concrete descriptions of such representations in terms of finite group data. This allows us to establish various properties of these representations. In particular we show that they have finite images, and that for surfaces of genus at least 3 their restriction to the Torelli group is non-trivial iff G is non-abelian.
We calculate the first homology group of the mapping class group with coefficients in the first rational homology group of the universal abelian $\Z / L \Z$-cover of the surface. If the surface has one marked point, then the answer is $\Q^{τ(L)}$, where $τ(L)$ is the number of positive divisors of $L$. If the surface instead has one boundary component, then the answer is $\Q$. We also perform the same calculation for the level $L$ subgroup of the mapping class group. Set $H_L = H_1(Σ_g;\Z/L\Z)$. If the surface has one marked point, then the answer is $\Q[H_L]$, the rational group ring of $H_L$…
An algorithm is proposed that solves two decision problems for pseudo-Anosov elements in the mapping class group of a surface with at least one marked fixed point. The first problem is the root problem: decide if the element is a power and in this case compute the roots. The second problem is the symmetry problem: decide if the element commutes with a finite order element and in this case compute this element. The structure theorem on which this algorithm is based provides also a new solution to the conjugacy problem.
Combinatorial aspects of the Torelli-Johnson-Morita theory of surface automorphisms are extended to certain subgroups of the mapping class groups. These subgroups are defined relative to a specified homomorphism from the fundamental group of the surface onto an arbitrary group $K$. For $K$ abelian, there is a combinatorial theory akin to the classical case, for example, providing an explicit cocycle representing the first Johnson homomophism with target $Λ^3 K$. Furthermore, the Earle class with coefficients in $K$ is represented by an explicit cocyle.
The period mapping assigns to each rank n, marked metric graph Gamma a positive definite quadratic form on H_1(Gamma). This defines maps Phi* and Phi on Culler--Vogtmann's outer space CV_n, and its Torelli space quotient T_n, respectively. The map Phi is a free group analog of the classical period mapping that sends a marked Riemann surface to its Jacobian. In this paper, we analyze the fibers of Phi in T_n, showing that they are aspherical, pi_1-injective subspaces. Metric graphs admitting a 'hyperelliptic involution' play an important role in the structure of Phi, leading us to define the hy…
We give a complete description of conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of the mapping class group of the sphere with r marked points. As a corollary we obtain a description of conjugacy classes of maximal finite subgroups of the hyperelliptic mapping class group. In particular, we prove that for a fixed genus g there are at most five such classes.
We are interested in the 3-Calabi-Yau categories $\mathcal{D}$ arising from quivers with potential associated to a triangulated marked surface $\mathbf{S}$ (without punctures). We prove that the spherical twist group ST of $\mathcal{D}$ is isomorphic to a subgroup (generated by braid twists) of the mapping class group of the decorated marked surface $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$. Here $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$ is the surface obtained from $\mathbf{S}$ by decorating with a set of decorated points, where the number of points equals the number of triangles in any triangulations of $\mathbf{S}…
We study the periods mapping from the moduli space of real hyperelliptic curves with marked point on an oriented oval to the euclidean space. The mapping arises in the analysis of Chebyshev construction used in the constrained optimization of the uniform norm of polynomials and rational functions. The decomposition of the moduli space into polyhedra labeled by planar graphs allows to investigate the global topology of low dimensional fibers of the periods mapping.
The balanced superelliptic mapping class group is the normalizer of the transformation group of the balanced superelliptic covering space in the mapping class group of the total surface. We give finite presentations for the balanced superelliptic mapping class groups of closed surfaces, surfaces with one marked point, and surfaces with one boundary component. To give these presentations, we construct finite presentations for corresponding liftable mapping class groups in a different generating set from Ghaswala-Winarski's presentation in \cite{Ghaswala-Winarski1}.
The mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}_{g, 1}$ of a surface with one marked point can be identified with an index two subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(π_1 Σ_g)$. For a surface of genus $g \geq 2$, we show that any action of $\mathrm{Mod}_{g, 1}$ on the circle is either semi-conjugate to its natural action on the Gromov boundary of $π_1 Σ_g$, or factors through a finite cyclic group. For $g \geq 3$, all finite actions are trivial. This answers a question of Farb.
Let S be a closed surface of genus g >= 2 and z in S a marked point. We prove that the subgroup of the mapping class group Map(S,z) corresponding to the fundamental group pi_1(S,z) of the closed surface does not lift to the group of diffeomorphisms of S fixing z. As a corollary, we show that the Atiyah-Kodaira surface bundles admit no invariant flat connection, and obtain another proof of Morita's non-lifting theorem.
We state Asymptotic Expansion and Growth Rate conjectures for the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of arbitrary framed links in 3-manifolds, and we prove these conjectures for the natural links in mapping tori of finite-order automorphisms of marked surfaces. Our approach is based upon geometric quantisation of the moduli space of parabolic bundles on the surface, which we show coincides with the construction of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants using conformal field theory, as was recently completed by Andersen and Ueno.
We give a geometric realization, the tagged rotation, of the AR-translation on the generalized cluster category associated to a surface $\mathbf{S}$ with marked points and non-empty boundary, which generalizes Brüstle-Zhang's result for the puncture free case. As an application, we show that the intersection of the shifts in the 3-Calabi-Yau derived category $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{\mathbf{S}})$ associated to the surface and the corresponding Seidel-Thomas braid group of $\mathcal{D}(Γ_{\mathbf{S}})$ is empty, unless $\mathbf{S}$ is a polygon with at most one puncture (i.e. of type A or D).
For a fixed marked surface $S$, we show that the problem of deciding whether or not a mapping class is reducible lies in $\textbf{NP}$. As usual this immediately gives an exponential time algorithm to decide whether or not a mapping class is reducible. To do this we use an (ideal) triangulation to obtain a coordinate system on the set of multicurves on $S$. The result then follows from the fact that the action of the mapping class group of $S$ is piecewise-linear with respect to such a coordinate system and so we are able so show that: if a mapping class $h$ fixes a multicurve then it fixes on…
Let $(S,\, \ast)$ be a closed oriented surface with a marked point, let $G$ be a fixed group, and let $ρ\colonπ_1(S) \longrightarrow G$ be a representation such that the orbit of $ρ$ under the action of the mapping class group $Mod(S,\, \ast)$ is finite. We prove that the image of $ρ$ is finite. A similar result holds if $π_1(S)$ is replaced by the free group $F_n$ on $n\geq 2$ generators and where $Mod(S,\, \ast)$ is replaced by $Aut(F_n)$. We thus resolve a well-known question of M. Kisin. We show that if $G$ is a linear algebraic group and if the representation variety of $π_1(S)$ is replac…
This paper describes connected components of the strata of holomorphic abelian differentials on marked Riemann surfaces with prescribed degrees of zeros. Unlike the case for unmarked Riemann surfaces, we find there can be many connected components, distinguished by roots of the cotangent bundle of the surface. In the course of our investigation we also characterize the images of the fundamental groups of strata inside of the mapping class group. The main techniques of proof are mod r winding numbers and a mapping class group-theoretic analogue of the Euclidean algorithm.
We prove a well known conjecture of Nikolai Ivanov which states that if $X$ is a surface of genus $\geq 3$ (with any number of punctures and boundary components), $\rm{Mod}(X)$ is the mapping class group of $X$, and $K < \rm{Mod}(X)$ is a finite-index subgroup, then $K$ does not virtually surject to $\mathbb{Z}$. As a corollary of this we get that $H_1(Z; \mathbb{Q}) = 0$ whenever $Z$ is a finite cover of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, the moduli space of complex algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 3$ with $n$ marked points.
We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.
We introduce a property of mutation loops, called the sign stability, with a focus on an asymptotic behavior of the iteration of the tropical $\mathcal{X}$-transformation. A sign-stable mutation loop has a numerical invariant which we call the cluster stretch factor, in analogy with that of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class on a marked surface. We compute the algebraic entropies of the cluster $\mathcal{A}$- and $\mathcal{X}$-transformations induced by a sign-stable mutation loop, and conclude that these two coincide with the logarithm of the cluster stretch factor.
We show that the pure mapping class group $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ of a non-orientable closed surface of genus $g\geqslant 2$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points has $p$-periodic cohomology for each odd prime $p$ for which $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-torsion. Using the Yagita invariant and the cohomology classes obtained by the representation of subgroups of order $p$, we obtain that the $p$-period is less than or equal to $4$ when $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 1$. Moreover, combining the Nielsen realization theorem and a characterization of the $p$-period given in terms of normalizers and centr…
Let $S_{g,n}$ be a surface of genus $g $ with $n$ marked points. Let $X$ be a complete hyperbolic metric on $S_{g,n}$ with $n$ cusps. Every isotopy class $[γ]$ of a closed curve $γ\in π_{1}(S_{g,n})$ contains a unique closed geodesic on $X$. Let $\ell_γ(X)$ denote the hyperbolic length of the geodesic representative of $γ$ on $X$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic growth of the lengths of closed curves of a fixed topological type on $S_{g,n}.$ As an application, one can obtain the asymptotics of the growth of $s^{k}_{X}(L)$, the number of closed curves of length $\leq L$ on $X$ with at mo…
Let $S=S_{g,p}$ be a compact, orientable surface of genus $g$ with $p$ punctures and such that $d(S):=3g-3+p>0$. The mapping class group $\textup{Mod}_S$ acts properly discontinuously on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T(S)$ of marked hyperbolic structures on $S$. The resulting quotient $\mathcal M(S)$ is the moduli space of isometry classes of hyperbolic surfaces. We provide a version of precise reduction theory for finite index subgroups of $\textup{Mod}_S$, i.e., a description of exact fundamental domains. As an application we show that the asymptotic cone of the moduli space $\mathcal M(S)…
We show that the number of square-tiled surfaces of genus $g$, with $n$ marked points, with one or both of its horizontal and vertical foliations belonging to fixed mapping class group orbits, and having at most $L$ squares, is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6+2n}$ times a product of constants appearing in Mirzakhani's count of simple closed hyperbolic geodesics. Many of the results in this paper reflect recent discoveries of Delecroix, Goujard, Zograf, and Zorich, but the approach considered here is very different from theirs. We follow conceptual and geometric methods inspired by Mirzakhani's work.
We give two proofs that appropriately defined congruence subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures/boundary have enormous amounts of rational cohomology in their virtual cohomological dimension. In particular we give bounds that are super-exponential in each of three variables: number of punctures, number of boundary components, and genus, generalizing work of Fullarton-Putman. Along the way, we give a simplified account of a theorem of Harer explaining how to relate the homotopy type of the curve complex of a multiply-punctured surface to the curve complex of a once-pun…
In this paper we present a new proof of the homological stability of the moduli space of closed surfaces in a simply connected background space $K$, which we denote by $S_g (K)$. The homology stability of surfaces in $K$ with an arbitrary number of boundary components, $S_{g,n} (K)$ was studied by the authors in \cite{cohenmadsen}. The study there relied on stability results for the homology of mapping class groups, $Γ_{g,n}$ with certain families of twisted coefficients. It turns out that these mapping class groups only have homological stability when $n$, the number of boundary components, i…
In his seminal 1976 paper Bill Thurston observed that a closed leaf S of a foliation has Euler characteristic equal, up to sign, to the Euler class of the foliation evaluated on [S], the homology class represented by S. The main result of this paper is a converse for taut foliations: if the Euler class of a taut foliation $\mathcal{F}$ evaluated on [S] equals up to sign the Euler characteristic of S and the underlying manifold is hyperbolic, then there exists another taut foliation $\mathcal{F'}$ such that $S$ is homologous to a union of leaves and such that the plane field of $\mathcal{F'}$ i…
