We construct on the category of diffeological spaces a Quillen model structure having smooth weak homotopy equivalences as the class of weak equivalences.
We construct a model category structure on the category of diffeological spaces which is Quillen equivalent to the model structure on the category of topological spaces based on the notions of Serre fibrations and weak homotopy equivalences.
The existence of a model structure on the category $\mathcal{D}$ of diffeological spaces is crucial to developing smooth homotopy theory. We construct a compactly generated model structure on the category $\mathcal{D}$ whose weak equivalences are just smooth maps inducing isomorphisms on smooth homotopy groups. The essential part of our construction of the model structure on $\mathcal{D}$ is to introduce diffeologies on the sets $Δ^{p}$ $(p \geq 0)$ such that $Δ^{p}$ contains the $k^{th}$ horn $Λ^{p}_{k}$ as a smooth deformation retract.
Diffeological spaces are generalizations of smooth manifolds. In this paper, we study the homotopy theory of diffeological spaces. We begin by proving basic properties of the smooth homotopy groups that we will need later. Then we introduce the smooth singular simplicial set $S^D(X)$ associated to a diffeological space $X$, and show that when $S^D(X)$ is fibrant, it captures smooth homotopical properties of $X$. Motivated by this, we define $X$ to be fibrant when $S^D(X)$ is, and more generally define cofibrations, fibrations and weak equivalences in the category of diffeological spaces using …
In the preceding paper, we have constructed a compactly generated model structure on the category $\dcal$ of diffeological spaces together with the adjoint pairs $|\ |_\dcal : \scal \rightleftarrows \dcal : S^\dcal$ and $\tilde{\cdot} : \dcal \rightleftarrows \ccal^0 : R$, where $\scal$ and $\ccal^0$ denote the category of simplicial sets and that of arc-generated spaces, respectively. In this paper, we show that $(|\ |_\dcal, S^\dcal)$ and $(\tilde{\cdot}, R)$ are pairs of Quillen equivalences. Since our approach developed in the preceding paper applies to the category $\ccal h$ of Chen space…
We give a complete and careful proof of Quillen's theorem on the existence of the standard model category structure on the category of topological spaces. We do not assume any familiarity with model categories.
We investigate under which assumptions a subclass of flat quasi-coherent shea\-ves on a quasi-compact and semi-separated scheme allows to "mock" the homotopy category of projective modules. Our methods are based on module theoretic properties of the subclass of flat modules involved as well as their behaviour with respect to Zariski localizations. As a consequence we get that, for such schemes, the derived category of flats is equivalent to the derived category of very flats. If, in addition, the scheme satisfies the resolution property then both derived categories are equivalent to the derive…
We construct a pseudo-localization of the 2-category of combinatorial Quillen model categories with respect to Quillen equivalences, and then verify that it embeds in a 2-category of Grothendieck derivators.
In this paper we study the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in the $\infty$-category of $(\infty, 2)$-categories, as well as the Quillen cohomology of an $(\infty, 2)$-category with coefficients in such a parameterized spectrum. More precisely, we construct an analogue of the twisted arrow category for an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{C}$, which we call its twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category. We then establish an equivalence between parameterized spectrum objects over $\mathbb{C}$, and diagrams of spectra indexed by the twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category of $\mathbb{C}$. Under th…
We exhibit a Quillen equivalence between two model categories encoding the homotopy theory of stratified spaces : the model category of filtered simplicial sets, and that of filtered spaces. Additionally, we introduce a new class of filtered spaces, that of vertical filtered CW-complexes, providing a nice model for the homotopy category of stratified spaces.
In this article, we construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of small topological categories $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{Top}}$. It is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure of $(\infty,1)$-categories and the Bergner model structure on $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{sSet}}$.
We put a monoidal model category structure on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves over a quasi-compact and semi-separated scheme X. The approach generalizes and simplifies methods used by the author to build monoidal model structures on the category of chain complexes of modules over a ring and chain complexes of sheaves over a ringed space. Indeed, much of the paper is dedicated to showing that in any Grothendieck category G, a nice enough class of objects, which we call a Kaplansky class, induces a model structure on the category Ch(G) of chain complexes. We also find s…
We introduce Clapp-Puppe type generalized Lusternik-Schnirelmann (co)category in a Quillen model category. We establish some of their basic properties and give various characterizations of them. As the first application of these characterizations, we show that our generalized (co)category is invariant under Quillen modelization equivalences. In particular, generalized (co)category of spaces and simplicial sets coincide. Another application of these characterizations is to define and study rational cocategory. Various other applications are also given.
In this article we build a Quillen model category structure on the category of sequentially complete l.m.c.-C*-algebras such that the corresponding homotopy classes of maps Ho(A,B) for separable C*-algebras A and B coincide with the Kasparov groups KK(A,B). This answers an open question posed by Mark Hovey about the possibility of describing KK-theory for C*-algebras using the language of Quillen model categories.
Quillen defined a {\em model category} to be a category with finite limits and colimits carrying a certain extra structure. In this paper, we show that only finite products and coproducts (in addition to the certain extra structure alluded to above) are really necessary to construct the homotopy category. This leads to the interesting observation that the homotopy category construction could feasibly be iterated.1
We show that a map between fibrant objects in a closed model category is a weak equivalence if and only if it has the right homotopy extension lifting property with respect to all cofibrations. The dual statement holds for maps between cofibrant objects.
In this paper, we study conditions for extending Quillen model category properties , between two symmetric monoidal categories, to their associated category of symmetric sequences and of operads. Given a Quillen equivalence $λ: \mathcal{C}=Ch_{\Bbbk,t} \leftrightarrows \mathcal{D}: R,$ so that $\mathcal{D}$ is any symmetric monoidal category and the adjoint pair $(λ, R)$ is weak monoidal, we prove that the categories of connected operads $Op_\mathcal{C}$ and $Op_\mathcal{D}$ are Quillen equivalent. This expands an analogous result of Schwede-Shipley(\cite{SS03}) when we replace these categorie…
There exists a canonical functor from the category of fibrant objects of a model category modulo cylinder homotopy to its homotopy category. We show that this functor is faithful under certain conditions, but not in general.
We discuss a variant of the category of dendroidal sets, the so-called closed dendroidal sets which are indexed by trees without leaves. This category carries a Quillen model structure which behaves better than the one on general dendroidal sets, mainly because it satisfies the pushout-product property, hence induces a symmetric monoidal structure on its homotopy category. We also study complete Segal style model structures on closed dendroidal spaces, and various Quillen adjunctions to model categories on (all) dendroidal sets or spaces. As a consequence, we deduce a Quillen equivalence from …
Let $\bf C$ be a coreflective subcategory of a cofibrantly generated model category $\bf D$. In this paper we show that under suitable conditions $\bf C$ admits a cofibrantly generated model structure which is left Quillen adjunct to the model structure on $\bf D$. As an application, we prove that well-known convenient categories of topological spaces, such as $k$-spaces, compactly generated spaces, and $Δ$-generated spaces \cite{DN} (called numerically generated in \cite{KKH}) admit a finitely generated model structure which is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on the categor…
We show that the homotopy category of commutative algebra spectra over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of the integers is equivalent to the homotopy category of E-infinity-monoids in unbounded chain complexes. We do this by establishing a chain of Quillen equivalences between the corresponding model categories. We also provide a Quillen equivalence to commutative monoids in the category of functors from the category of finite sets and injections to unbounded chain complexes.
We establish, by elementary means, the existence of a cofibrantly generated monoidal model structure on the category of operads. By slicing over a suitable operad the classical Rezk model structure on the category of small categories is recovered.
If a Quillen model category can be specified using a certain logical syntax (intuitively, ``is algebraic/combinatorial enough''), so that it can be defined in any category of sheaves, then the satisfaction of Quillen's axioms over any site is a purely formal consequence of their being satisfied over the category of sets. Such data give rise to a functor from the category of topoi and geometric morphisms to Quillen model categories and Quillen adjunctions.
We distinguish between faint, weak, strong and strict localizations of categories at morphism families and show that this framework captures the different types of derived functors that are considered in the literature. More precisely, we show that Kan and faint derived functors coincide when we use the classical Kan homotopy category, and when we use the Quillen homotopy category, Kan and strong derived functors coincide. Our comparison results are based on the fact that the Kan homotopy category is a weak localization and that the Quillen homotopy category is a strict localization.
For a small simplicial category A, we prove that the homotopy colimit functor from the category of simplicial diagrams on A to the category of simplicial sets over the homotopy-coherent nerve of A provides a left Quillen equivalence between the projective model structure on the former category and the covariant model structure on the latter. We compare this Quillen equivalence to the straightening-unstraightening equivalence previously established by Lurie, where the left adjoint goes in the opposite direction. The existence of left Quillen functors in both directions considerably simplifies t…
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, a projective class on a complete and cocomplete abelian category A is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is that, under weak hypotheses, the category …
We show that the functor that takes a multicosimplicial object in a model category to its diagonal cosimplicial object is a right Quillen functor. This implies that the diagonal of a Reedy fibrant multicosimplicial object is a Reedy fibrant cosimplicial object, which has applications to the calculus of functors. We also show that, although the diagonal functor is a Quillen functor, it is not a Quillen equivalence for multicosimplicial spaces. We also discuss total objects and homotopy limits of multicosimplicial objects. We show that the total object of a multicosimplicial object is isomorphic…
We collect in one place a variety of known and folklore results in enriched model category theory and add a few new twists. The central theme is a general procedure for constructing a Quillen adjunction, often a Quillen equivalence, between a given V-model category and a category of enriched presheaves in V, where V is any good enriching category. For example, we rederive the result of Schwede and Shipley that reasonable stable model categories are Quillen equivalent to presheaf categories of spectra (alias categories of module spectra) under more general hypotheses. The technical improvements…
We give a Quillen equivalence between May and Sigurdsson's model category of parametrized spectra over BG, and Mandell, May, Schwede, and Shipley's model category of modules over the orthogonal ring spectrum Σ^\infty_+ G, for each topological group G. More generally, for a topological category C we introduce an "aggregate" model structure on the category of diagrams of spectra indexed by C, and prove that it is Quillen equivalent to spectra over BC. This lifts several earlier results, and leads to a complete characterization of the dualizable parametrized spectra, answering a question of May a…
We produce a highly structured way of associating a simplicial category to a model category which improves on work of Dwyer and Kan and answers a question of Hovey. We show that model categories satisfying a certain axiom are Quillen equivalent to simplicial model categories. A simplicial model category provides higher order structure such as composable mapping spaces and homotopy colimits. We also show that certain homotopy invariant functors can be replaced by weakly equivalent simplicial, or `continuous', functors. This is used to show that if a simplicial model category structure exists on…
If C is a stable model category with a monoidal product then the set of homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit S forms a commutative ring. An idempotent e of this ring will split the homotopy category. We prove that provided the localised model structures exist, this splitting of the homotopy category comes from a splitting of the model category, that is, C is Quillen equivalent to the product of C localised at the object eS and C localised at the object (1-e)S. This Quillen equivalence is strong monoidal and is symmetric when the monoidal product of C is.
A simplicial set is said to be non-singular if its non-degenerate simplices are embedded. Let $sSet$ denote the category of simplicial sets. We prove that the full subcategory $nsSet$ whose objects are the non-singular simplicial sets admits a model structure such that $nsSet$ becomes is Quillen equivalent to $sSet$ equipped with the standard model structure due to Quillen. The model structure on $nsSet$ is right-induced from $sSet$ and it makes $nsSet$ a proper cofibrantly generated model category. Together with Thomason's model structure on small categories (1980) and Raptis' model structure…
Let V be a cofibrantly generated monoidal model category and let M be a monoidal V-model category. Given a cofibrant C-coloured operad P in V, we give sufficient conditions for the fibrant replacement and cofibrant replacement functors in M^C to preserve P-algebra structures. In particular, we show how P-algebra structures can be transferred along derived Quillen adjunctions of monoidal V-model categories, and we apply this result to the Quillen adjunctions defined by enriched Bousfield localizations and colocalizations on M. As an application, we prove that in the category of symmetric spectr…
We introduce a notion of "weak model category" which is a weakening of the notion of Quillen model category, still sufficient to define a homotopy category, Quillen adjunctions, Quillen equivalences and most of the usual construction of categorical homotopy theory. Both left and right semi-model categories are weak model categories, and the opposite of a weak model category is again a weak model category. The main advantages of weak model categories is that they are easier to construct than Quillen model categories. In particular we give some simple criteria on two weak factorization systems f…
Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a monoidal model category that is also combinatorial and left proper. If $\mathscr{O}$ is a monad, operad, properad, or a PROP; following Segal's ideas we develop a theory of Quillen-Segal $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and show that we have a Quillen equivalence between usual $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and Quillen-Segal algebras. We use this theory to get the stable homotopy category by a similar method as Hovey.
We develop a cofibrantly generated model category structure in the category of topological spaces in which weak equivalences are A-weak equivalences and such that the generalized CW(A)-complexes are cofibrant objects. With this structure the exponential law turns out to be a Quillen adjunction.
We introduce and compare two approaches to equivariant homotopy theory in a topological or ordinary Quillen model category. For the topological model category of spaces, we generalize Piacenza's result that the categories of topological presheaves indexed by the orbit category of a fixed topological group $G$ and the category of $G$-spaces can be endowed with Quillen equivalent model category structures. We prove an analogous result for any cofibrantly generated model category and discrete group $G$, under certain conditions on the fixed point functors of the subgroups of $G$. These conditions…
We establish a Quillen equivalence relating the homotopy theory of Segal operads and the homotopy theory of simplicial operads, from which we deduce that the homotopy coherent nerve functor is a right Quillen equivalence from the model category of simplicial operads to the model category structure for infinity-operads on the category of dendroidal sets. By slicing over the monoidal unit, this also gives the Quillen equivalence between Segal categories and simplicial categories proved by J. Bergner, as well as the Quillen equivalence between quasi-categories and simplicial categories proved by …
The category of rational O(2)-equivariant cohomology theories has an algebraic model A(O(2)), as established by work of Greenlees. That is, there is an equivalence of categories between the homotopy category of rational O(2)-equivariant spectra and the derived category of the abelian model DA(O(2)). In this paper we lift this equivalence of homotopy categories to the level of Quillen equivalences of model categories. This Quillen equivalence is also compatible with the Adams short exact sequence of the algebraic model.
In this paper we prove that for any simplicial set $B$, there is a Quillen equivalence between the covariant model structure on $\mathbf{S}/B$ and a certain localization of the projective model structure on the category of simplicial presheaves on the simplex category $Δ/B$ of $B$. We extend this result to give a new Quillen equivalence between this covariant model structure and the projective model structure on the category of simplicial presheaves on the simplicial category $\mathfrak{C}[B]$. We study the relationship with Lurie's straightening theorem. Along the way we prove some results on…
We show that the homotopy theory of differential graded algebras coincides with the homotopy theory of HZ-algebra spectra. Namely, we construct Quillen equivalences between the Quillen model categories of (unbounded) differential graded algebras and HZ-algebra spectra. We also construct Quillen equivalences between the differential graded modules and module spectra over these algebras. We use these equivalences in turn to produce algebraic models for rational stable model categories. We show that bascially any rational stable model category is Quillen equivalent to modules over a differential …
We establish a Quillen equivalence between the homotopy theories of equivariant Segal operads and equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps. Together with previous work, we further conclude that the homotopy coherent nerve is a right-Quillen equivalence from the model category of equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps to the model category structure for equivariant-$\infty$-operads in equivariant dendroidal sets.
A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.
We show that every combinatorial model category can be obtained, up to Quillen equivalence, by localizing a model category of diagrams of simplicial sets. This says that any combinatorial model category can be built up from a category of `generators' and a set of `relations'---that is, any combinatorial model category has a presentation.
Framings provide a way to construct Quillen functors from simplicial sets to any given model category. A more structured set-up studies stable frames giving Quillen functors from spectra to stable model categories. We will investigate how this is compatible with Bousfield localisation to gain insight into the deeper structure of the stable homotopy category. We further show how these techniques relate to rigidity questions and how they can be used to study algebraic model categories.
We study the behavior of the abstract sectional category in the Quillen, the Strom and the Mixed proper model structures on topological spaces and prove that, under certain reasonable conditions, all of them coincide with the classical notion. As a result, the same conclusions hold for the abstract Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and the abstract topological complexity of a space.
An isovariant map between spaces with a group action is an equivariant map which preserves isotropy groups. In this paper, we show that for a finite group $G$, the category of $G$-spaces with isovariant maps has a Quillen model structure. We prove a Piacenza-style model theoretic proof of an isovariant Elmendorf's theorem, showing that this model structure is Quillen equivalent to a model category of diagrams.
Given a diagram of rings, one may consider the category of modules over them. We are interested in the homotopy theory of categories of this type: given a suitable diagram of model categories M(s) (as s runs through the diagram), we consider the category of diagrams where the object X(s) at s comes from M(s). We develop model structures on such categories of diagrams, and Quillen adjunctions that relate categories based on different diagram shapes. Under certain conditions, cellularizations (or right Bousfield localizations) of these adjunctions induce Quillen equivalences. As an application w…
For an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ we investigate when the stable categories $\underline{\mathrm{GPro}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ and $\underline{\mathrm{GIn}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ are triangulated equivalent. To this end, we realize these stable categories as homotopy categories of certain (non-trivial) model categories and give conditions on $\mathcal{A}$ that ensure the existence of a Quillen equivalence between the model categories in question. We also study when such a Quillen equivalence transfers from $\mathcal{A}$ to categories naturally associated to $\mathcal{A}$, such as $\mathr…
We study the subcategory of topological operads $P$ such that $P(0) = *$ (the category of unitary operads in our terminology). We use that this category inherits a model structure, like the category of all operads in topological spaces, and that the embedding functor of this subcategory of unitary operads into the category of all operads admits a left Quillen adjoint. We prove that the derived functor of this left Quillen adjoint functor induces a left inverse of the derived functor of our category embedding at the homotopy category level. We deduce from this result that the derived mapping sp…
