In this paper we study the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in the $\infty$-category of $(\infty, 2)$-categories, as well as the Quillen cohomology of an $(\infty, 2)$-category with coefficients in such a parameterized spectrum. More precisely, we construct an analogue of the twisted arrow category for an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{C}$, which we call its twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category. We then establish an equivalence between parameterized spectrum objects over $\mathbb{C}$, and diagrams of spectra indexed by the twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category of $\mathbb{C}$. Under this equivalence, the Quillen cohomology of $\mathbb{C}$ with values in such a diagram of spectra is identified with the two-fold suspension of its inverse limit spectrum. As an application, we provide an alternative, obstruction-theoretic proof of the fact that adjunctions between $(\infty,1)$-categories are uniquely determined at the level of the homotopy $(3, 2)$-category of $\mathrm{Cat}_{\infty}$.
We construct a natural transformation from the Bousfield-Kuhn functor evaluated on a space to the Topological Andre-Quillen cohomology of the K(n)-local Spanier-Whitehead dual of the space, and show that the map is an equivalence in the case where the space is a sphere. This results in a method for computing unstable v_n-periodic homotopy groups of spheres from their Morava E-cohomology (as modules over the Dyer-Lashof algebra of Morava E-theory). We relate the resulting algebraic computations to the algebraic geometry of isogenies between Lubin-Tate formal groups.
We confirm a conjecture of Quillen in the case of the mod $2$ cohomology of arithmetic groups ${\rm SL}_2({\mathcal{O}}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-m})}[\frac{1}{2}]\thinspace)$, where ${\mathcal{O}}_{\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-m}\thinspace)}$ is an imaginary quadratic ring of integers. To make explicit the free module structure on the cohomology ring conjectured by Quillen, we compute the mod $2$ cohomology of ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb{Z}}[\sqrt{-2}\thinspace][\frac{1}{2}])$ via the amalgamated decomposition of the latter group.
We show that a map between fibrant objects in a closed model category is a weak equivalence if and only if it has the right homotopy extension lifting property with respect to all cofibrations. The dual statement holds for maps between cofibrant objects.
We describe a Quillen equivalence between quasi-categories and relative categories which is surprisingly similar to Thomason's Quillen equivalences between simplicial sets and categories.
We develop a simple theory of André-Quillen cohomology for commutative differential graded algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We then relate it to the homotopy groups of function spaces and spaces of homotopy self-equivalences of rational nilpotent $CW$-complexes. This puts certain results of Sullivan in a more conceptual framework.
We explain how the approach of Andre and Quillen to defining cohomology and homology as suitable derived functors extends to generalized (co)homology theories, and how this identification may be used to study the relationship between them. As a side benefit, we clarify exactly what assumptions on an (algebraic) category are needed in order for the approach of Beck and Andre-Quillen to work. We also show how the description may be applied to construct universal coefficient and reverse Adams spectral sequences.
We show that the cohomology groups usually associated with racks and quandles agree with the Quillen cohomology groups for the algebraic theories of racks and quandles, respectively. We also explain how this makes available the entire range of tools that comes with a Quillen homology theory, such as long exact sequences (transitivity) and excision isomorphisms (flat base change).
We study the André-Quillen cohomology with coefficients of an algebra over an operad. Using resolutions of algebras coming from Koszul duality theory, we make this cohomology theory explicit and we give a Lie theoretic interpretation. For which operads is the associated André-Quillen cohomology equal to an Ext-functor ? We give several criterion, based on the cotangent complex, to characterize this property. We apply it to homotopy algebras, which gives a new homotopy stable property for algebras over cofibrant operads.
We prove that various structures on model $\infty$-categories descend to corresponding structures on their localizations: (i) Quillen adjunctions; (ii) two-variable Quillen adjunctions; (iii) monoidal and symmetric monoidal model structures; and (iv) enriched model structures.
There are two main approaches to the problem of realizing a $Π$-algebra (a graded group $Λ$ equipped with an action of the primary homotopy operations) as the homotopy groups of a space $X$. Both involve trying to realize an algebraic free simplicial resolution $G_\bullet$ of $Λ$ by a simplicial space $W_\bullet$ and proceed by induction on the simplicial dimension. The first provides a sequence of André-Quillen cohomology classes in $H_{AQ}^{n+2}(Λ;Ω^{n}Λ)$ for $n \geq 1$ as obstructions to the existence of successive Postnikov sections for $W_\bullet$ by work of Dwyer, Kan and Stover. The se…
In the preceding paper, we have constructed a compactly generated model structure on the category $\dcal$ of diffeological spaces together with the adjoint pairs $|\ |_\dcal : \scal \rightleftarrows \dcal : S^\dcal$ and $\tilde{\cdot} : \dcal \rightleftarrows \ccal^0 : R$, where $\scal$ and $\ccal^0$ denote the category of simplicial sets and that of arc-generated spaces, respectively. In this paper, we show that $(|\ |_\dcal, S^\dcal)$ and $(\tilde{\cdot}, R)$ are pairs of Quillen equivalences. Since our approach developed in the preceding paper applies to the category $\ccal h$ of Chen space…
We prove the compatibility between the suspension construction and the complicial nerve of $ω$-categories. As a motivating application, we produce a Quillen pair between the models of $(\infty,n)$-categories given by Rezk's complete Segal $Θ_n$-spaces and Verity's $n$-complicial sets.
In this article, we construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of small topological categories $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{Top}}$. It is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure of $(\infty,1)$-categories and the Bergner model structure on $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{sSet}}$.
In this paper we use tools from differential topology to give a geometric description of cohomology for Hilbert manifolds. Our model is Quillen's geometric description of cobordism groups for finite dimensional smooth manifolds \cite{Q}. Quillen stresses the fact that this construction allows the definition of Gysin maps for "oriented" proper maps. For finite dimensional manifolds one has a Gysin map in singular cohomology which is based on Poincaré duality, hence it is not clear how to extend it to infinite dimensional manifolds. But perhaps one can overcome this difficulty by giving a Quille…
In this paper, we study conditions for extending Quillen model category properties , between two symmetric monoidal categories, to their associated category of symmetric sequences and of operads. Given a Quillen equivalence $λ: \mathcal{C}=Ch_{\Bbbk,t} \leftrightarrows \mathcal{D}: R,$ so that $\mathcal{D}$ is any symmetric monoidal category and the adjoint pair $(λ, R)$ is weak monoidal, we prove that the categories of connected operads $Op_\mathcal{C}$ and $Op_\mathcal{D}$ are Quillen equivalent. This expands an analogous result of Schwede-Shipley(\cite{SS03}) when we replace these categorie…
We extend the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibers of Dwyer, et al. to similar results for homotopy pullbacks and note that these results imply similar results for zigzags in the categories of relative categories and k-relative categories, not only with respect to their Reedy structures but also their Rezk structure, which turns them into models for the theories of (infinity, 1)- and (infinity, k)-categories, respectively.
We construct a new Quillen model, based on the notions of Drinfeld's DG quotient and localization pair, for the Morita homotopy theory of DG categories. This new Quillen model carries a natural closed symmetric monoidal structure and allows us to re-interpret Toen's construction of the internal Hom-functor for the homotopy category of DG categories as a total right derived internal Hom-functor.
We construct a pseudo-localization of the 2-category of combinatorial Quillen model categories with respect to Quillen equivalences, and then verify that it embeds in a 2-category of Grothendieck derivators.
We construct Quillen equivalences between the model categories of monoids (rings), modules and algebras over two Quillen equivalent model categories under certain conditions. This is a continuation of our earlier work where we established model categories of monoids, modules and algebras [Algebras and modules in monoidal model categories, Proc. London Math. Soc. 80 (2000), 491-511]. As an application we extend the Dold-Kan equivalence to show that the model categories of simplicial rings, modules and algebras are Quillen equivalent to the associated model categories of connected differential g…
Quillen defined a {\em model category} to be a category with finite limits and colimits carrying a certain extra structure. In this paper, we show that only finite products and coproducts (in addition to the certain extra structure alluded to above) are really necessary to construct the homotopy category. This leads to the interesting observation that the homotopy category construction could feasibly be iterated.1
We prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem B to strict $\infty$-categories. More generally, we show that under similar hypothesis as for Theorem B, the comma construction for strict $\infty$-categories, that we introduced with Maltsiniotis in a previous paper, is the homotopy pullback with respect to Thomason equivalences. We give several applications of these results, including the construction of new models for certain Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces.
The aim of this paper is to prove a generalization of the famous Theorem A of Quillen for strict $\infty$-categories. This result is central to the homotopy theory of strict $\infty$-categories developed by the authors. The proof presented here is of a simplicial nature and uses Steiner's theory of augmented directed complexes. In a subsequent paper, we will prove the same result by purely $\infty$-categorical methods.
We put a monoidal model category structure on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves over a quasi-compact and semi-separated scheme X. The approach generalizes and simplifies methods used by the author to build monoidal model structures on the category of chain complexes of modules over a ring and chain complexes of sheaves over a ringed space. Indeed, much of the paper is dedicated to showing that in any Grothendieck category G, a nice enough class of objects, which we call a Kaplansky class, induces a model structure on the category Ch(G) of chain complexes. We also find s…
We give a complete and careful proof of Quillen's theorem on the existence of the standard model category structure on the category of topological spaces. We do not assume any familiarity with model categories.
A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.
We exhibit a Quillen equivalence between two model categories encoding the homotopy theory of stratified spaces : the model category of filtered simplicial sets, and that of filtered spaces. Additionally, we introduce a new class of filtered spaces, that of vertical filtered CW-complexes, providing a nice model for the homotopy category of stratified spaces.
We collect in one place a variety of known and folklore results in enriched model category theory and add a few new twists. The central theme is a general procedure for constructing a Quillen adjunction, often a Quillen equivalence, between a given V-model category and a category of enriched presheaves in V, where V is any good enriching category. For example, we rederive the result of Schwede and Shipley that reasonable stable model categories are Quillen equivalent to presheaf categories of spectra (alias categories of module spectra) under more general hypotheses. The technical improvements…
We show that the homotopy theory of differential graded algebras coincides with the homotopy theory of HZ-algebra spectra. Namely, we construct Quillen equivalences between the Quillen model categories of (unbounded) differential graded algebras and HZ-algebra spectra. We also construct Quillen equivalences between the differential graded modules and module spectra over these algebras. We use these equivalences in turn to produce algebraic models for rational stable model categories. We show that bascially any rational stable model category is Quillen equivalent to modules over a differential …
The paper gives a new proof that the model categories of stable modules for the rings Z/(p^2) and (Z/p)[ε]/(ε^2) are not Quillen equivalent. The proof uses homotopy endomorphism ring spectra. Our considerations lead to an example of two differential graded algebras which are derived equivalent but whose associated model categories of modules are not Quillen equivalent. As a bonus, we also obtain derived equivalent dgas with non-isomorphic K-theories.
If a Quillen model category can be specified using a certain logical syntax (intuitively, ``is algebraic/combinatorial enough''), so that it can be defined in any category of sheaves, then the satisfaction of Quillen's axioms over any site is a purely formal consequence of their being satisfied over the category of sets. Such data give rise to a functor from the category of topoi and geometric morphisms to Quillen model categories and Quillen adjunctions.
For an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ we investigate when the stable categories $\underline{\mathrm{GPro}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ and $\underline{\mathrm{GIn}}\mathrm{j}(\mathcal{A})$ are triangulated equivalent. To this end, we realize these stable categories as homotopy categories of certain (non-trivial) model categories and give conditions on $\mathcal{A}$ that ensure the existence of a Quillen equivalence between the model categories in question. We also study when such a Quillen equivalence transfers from $\mathcal{A}$ to categories naturally associated to $\mathcal{A}$, such as $\mathr…
This paper is the second in a series of two papers about generalizing Quillen's Theorem A to strict $\infty$-categories. In the first one, we presented a proof of this Theorem A of a simplicial nature, direct but somewhat ad hoc. In the current paper, we give a conceptual proof of an $\infty$-categorical nature of the same theorem. This proof is based on the theory of join and slices for strict $\infty$-categories developed by the authors in a previous paper, and on a comma construction for strict $\infty$-categories generalizing classical comma categories and Gray's comma 2-categories. This $…
We introduce a notion of "weak model category" which is a weakening of the notion of Quillen model category, still sufficient to define a homotopy category, Quillen adjunctions, Quillen equivalences and most of the usual construction of categorical homotopy theory. Both left and right semi-model categories are weak model categories, and the opposite of a weak model category is again a weak model category. The main advantages of weak model categories is that they are easier to construct than Quillen model categories. In particular we give some simple criteria on two weak factorization systems f…
We prove a general version of Quillen's Theorem B, for actions of simplicial categories, in an arbitrary left Bousfield localization of the homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves over a site. As special cases, we recover a version of the group completion theorem in this general context, as well a version of Puppe's theorem on the stability of homotopy colimits in an infinity-topos, due to Rezk.
Let $I$ be a small category with finite dimensional nerve, and $X\colon I\to Cat$ a diagram of small categories. We show that, under a "Reedy quasi-fibrancy condition", the homotopy limit of the geometric realization of $X$ is itself the geometric realization of a category. This categorical model for the homotopy limit is defined explicitly, as a category of natural transformations of diagrams. For the poset $\bullet\to\bullet\leftarrow\bullet$ we recover the model for homotopy pullbacks provided by Quillen's Theorem $B$ (specifically Barwick and Kan's version of Quillen's Theorem $B_2$). For …
We produce a highly structured way of associating a simplicial category to a model category which improves on work of Dwyer and Kan and answers a question of Hovey. We show that model categories satisfying a certain axiom are Quillen equivalent to simplicial model categories. A simplicial model category provides higher order structure such as composable mapping spaces and homotopy colimits. We also show that certain homotopy invariant functors can be replaced by weakly equivalent simplicial, or `continuous', functors. This is used to show that if a simplicial model category structure exists on…
This paper aims to answer the following question: Given an adjunction between two categories, how is Quillen (co)homology in one category related to that in the other? We identify the induced comparison diagram, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for it to arise, and describe the various comparison maps. Examples are given. Along the way, we clarify some categorical assumptions underlying Quillen (co)homology: cocomplete categories with a set of small projective generators provide a convenient setup.
We prove that a Quillen adjunction of model categories (of which we do not require functorial factorizations and of which we only require finite bicompleteness) induces a canonical adjunction of underlying quasicategories.
We restate the notion of orthogonal calculus in terms of model categories. This provides a cleaner set of results and makes the role of O(n)-equivariance clearer. Thus we develop model structures for the category of n-polynomial and n-homogeneous functors, along with Quillen pairs relating them. We then classify n-homogeneous functors, via a zig-zag of Quillen equivalences, in terms of spectra with an O(n)-action. This improves upon the classification of Weiss. As an application, we develop a variant of orthogonal calculus by replacing topological spaces with orthogonal spectra.
We establish a Quillen equivalence relating the homotopy theory of Segal operads and the homotopy theory of simplicial operads, from which we deduce that the homotopy coherent nerve functor is a right Quillen equivalence from the model category of simplicial operads to the model category structure for infinity-operads on the category of dendroidal sets. By slicing over the monoidal unit, this also gives the Quillen equivalence between Segal categories and simplicial categories proved by J. Bergner, as well as the Quillen equivalence between quasi-categories and simplicial categories proved by …
If C is a stable model category with a monoidal product then the set of homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit S forms a commutative ring. An idempotent e of this ring will split the homotopy category. We prove that provided the localised model structures exist, this splitting of the homotopy category comes from a splitting of the model category, that is, C is Quillen equivalent to the product of C localised at the object eS and C localised at the object (1-e)S. This Quillen equivalence is strong monoidal and is symmetric when the monoidal product of C is.
A simplicial set is said to be non-singular if its non-degenerate simplices are embedded. Let $sSet$ denote the category of simplicial sets. We prove that the full subcategory $nsSet$ whose objects are the non-singular simplicial sets admits a model structure such that $nsSet$ becomes is Quillen equivalent to $sSet$ equipped with the standard model structure due to Quillen. The model structure on $nsSet$ is right-induced from $sSet$ and it makes $nsSet$ a proper cofibrantly generated model category. Together with Thomason's model structure on small categories (1980) and Raptis' model structure…
We define a notion of groupoidal 2-quasi-categories and show that they are the fibrant objects of a model structure on the category of $Θ_2$-sets. We show that this model category is Quillen equivalent to the Kan-Quillen model category of simplicial sets and that 2-truncated groupoidal 2-quasi-categories are models for homotopy 2-types.
For every regular cardinal $α$, we construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on a category whose objects are essentially DG categories which are stable under suspensions, cosuspensions, cones and $α$-small sums. Using results of Porta, we show that the category of well-generated (algebraic) triangulated categories in the sense of Neeman is naturally enhanced by our Quillen model category.
We show that that classical rational homotopy theory in the sense of Sullivan [6] can be extended compactly supported setting. This presents a simplicial version of the compactly supported de Rham complex in characteristic zero, and proving that it models singular compactly supported cohomology. This presents new avenues of possible study in proper homotopy theory, and further extensions of the ideas within the classical literature of Quillen [5] and Sullivan.
We prove an extension of the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibres to a similar result for homotopy pullbacks and use this to obtain sufficient conditions on a pullback diagram of categories to guarantee that it be a homotopy pullback.
We construct a zig-zag of Quillen adjunctions between the homotopy theories of differential graded and simplicial categories. In an intermediate step we generalize Shipley-Schwede's work on connective DG algebras by extending the Dold-Kan correspondence to a Quillen equivalence between categories enriched over positive graded chain complexes and simplicial k-modules. As an application we obtain a conceptual explanation of Simpson's homotopy fiber construction.
The category of rational O(2)-equivariant cohomology theories has an algebraic model A(O(2)), as established by work of Greenlees. That is, there is an equivalence of categories between the homotopy category of rational O(2)-equivariant spectra and the derived category of the abelian model DA(O(2)). In this paper we lift this equivalence of homotopy categories to the level of Quillen equivalences of model categories. This Quillen equivalence is also compatible with the Adams short exact sequence of the algebraic model.
We discuss a variant of the category of dendroidal sets, the so-called closed dendroidal sets which are indexed by trees without leaves. This category carries a Quillen model structure which behaves better than the one on general dendroidal sets, mainly because it satisfies the pushout-product property, hence induces a symmetric monoidal structure on its homotopy category. We also study complete Segal style model structures on closed dendroidal spaces, and various Quillen adjunctions to model categories on (all) dendroidal sets or spaces. As a consequence, we deduce a Quillen equivalence from …
