We construct a new Quillen model, based on the notions of Drinfeld's DG quotient and localization pair, for the Morita homotopy theory of DG categories. This new Quillen model carries a natural closed symmetric monoidal structure and allows us to re-interpret Toen's construction of the internal Hom-functor for the homotopy category of DG categories as a total right derived internal Hom-functor.
We develop a simple theory of André-Quillen cohomology for commutative differential graded algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We then relate it to the homotopy groups of function spaces and spaces of homotopy self-equivalences of rational nilpotent $CW$-complexes. This puts certain results of Sullivan in a more conceptual framework.
In this article we build a Quillen model category structure on the category of sequentially complete l.m.c.-C*-algebras such that the corresponding homotopy classes of maps Ho(A,B) for separable C*-algebras A and B coincide with the Kasparov groups KK(A,B). This answers an open question posed by Mark Hovey about the possibility of describing KK-theory for C*-algebras using the language of Quillen model categories.
Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a monoidal model category that is also combinatorial and left proper. If $\mathscr{O}$ is a monad, operad, properad, or a PROP; following Segal's ideas we develop a theory of Quillen-Segal $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and show that we have a Quillen equivalence between usual $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and Quillen-Segal algebras. We use this theory to get the stable homotopy category by a similar method as Hovey.
We prove that every functor defined on dg categories, which is derived Morita invariant, localizing, and A^1-homotopy invariant, satisfies the fundamental theorem. As an application, we recover in a unified and conceptual way, Weibel and Kassel's fundamental theorems in homotopy algebraic K-theory, and periodic cyclic homology, respectively.
For every regular cardinal $α$, we construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on a category whose objects are essentially DG categories which are stable under suspensions, cosuspensions, cones and $α$-small sums. Using results of Porta, we show that the category of well-generated (algebraic) triangulated categories in the sense of Neeman is naturally enhanced by our Quillen model category.
We construct a Quillen model structure on the category of spectral categories, where the weak equivalences are the symmetric spectra analogue of the notion of equivalence of categories.
Let X be a noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, having 2 invertible in its ring of regular functions, an ample family of line bundles, and a global bound on the virtual mod-2 cohomological dimensions of its residue fields. We prove that the comparison map from the hermitian K-theory of X to the homotopy fixed points of K-theory under the natural Z/2-action is a 2-adic equivalence in general, and an integral equivalence when X has no formally real residue field. We also show that the comparison map between the higher Grothendieck-Witt (hermitian K-) theory of X and its étale version is …
In this article we establish the foundations of the Morita homotopy theory of C*-categories. Concretely, we construct a cofibrantly generated simplicial symmetric monoidal Quillen model structure M_Mor on the category C*cat1 of small unital C*-categories. The weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences and the cofibrations are the *-functors which are injective on objects. As an application, we obtain an elegant description of the Brown-Green-Rieffel Picard group in the associated Morita homotopy category Ho(M_Mor). We then prove that the Morita homotopy category is semi-additive. By group c…
Let $R$ be a left-Gorenstein ring. We show that there is a Quillen equivalence between singular contraderived model category and singular coderived model category. Consequently, an equivalence between the homotopy category of exact complexes of projective modules and the homotopy category of exact complexes of injective modules is given.
We construct a zig-zag of Quillen adjunctions between the homotopy theories of differential graded and simplicial categories. In an intermediate step we generalize Shipley-Schwede's work on connective DG algebras by extending the Dold-Kan correspondence to a Quillen equivalence between categories enriched over positive graded chain complexes and simplicial k-modules. As an application we obtain a conceptual explanation of Simpson's homotopy fiber construction.
A classical theorem due to Quillen (1969) identifies the unitary bordism ring with the Lazard ring, which classifies the universal one-dimensional commutative formal group law. We prove an equivariant generalization of this result by identifying the homotopy theoretic $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant unitary bordism ring, introduced by tom Dieck (1970), with the $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant Lazard ring, introduced by Cole-Greenlees-Kriz (2000). Our proof combines a computation of the homotopy theoretic $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant unitary bordism ring due to Strickland (2001) with a detailed investigati…
In this paper we show that the strict and lax pullbacks of a 2-categorical opfibration along an arbitrary 2-functor are homotopy equivalent. We give two applications. First, we show that the strict fibers of an opfibration model the homotopy fibers. This is a version of Quillen's Theorem B amenable to applications. Second, we compute the $E^2$ page of a homology spectral sequence associated to an opfibration and apply this machinery to a 2-categorical construction of $S^{-1}S$. We show that if $S$ is a symmetric monoidal 2-groupoid with faithful translations then $S^{-1}S$ models the group com…
We define Anderson-Brown-Cisinski (ABC) cofibration categories, and construct homotopy colimits of diagrams of objects in ABC cofibration categories. Homotopy colimits for Quillen model categories are obtained as a particular case. We attach to each ABC cofibration category a left Heller derivator. A dual theory is developed for homotopy limits in ABC fibration categories and for right Heller derivators. These constructions provide a natural framework for 'doing homotopy theory' in ABC (co)fibration categories.
We define a topological Hochschild (THH) and cyclic (TC) homology theory for differential graded (dg) categories and construct several non-trivial natural transformations from algebraic K-theory to THH(-). In an intermediate step, we prove that the homotopy theory of dg categories is Quillen equivalent, through a four step zig-zag of Quillen equivalences, to the homotopy theory of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectral categories. Finally, we show that over the rationals two dg categories are topological equivalent if and only if they are quasi-equivalent.
The main purpose of this work is the study of the homotopy theory of dg-categories up to quasi-equivalences. Our main result provides a natural description of the mapping spaces between two dg-categories $C$ and $D$ in terms of the nerve of a certain category of $(C,D)$-bimodules. We also prove that the homotopy category $Ho(dg-Cat)$ is cartesian closed (i.e. possesses internal Hom's relative to the tensor product). We use these two results in order to prove a derived version of Morita theory, describing the morphisms between dg-categories of modules over two dg-categories $C$ and $D$ as the d…
With the help of the tools of Quillen's homotopical algebra, we construct `the universal additive invariant', namely a functor from the category of small dg categories to an additive category, that inverts the Morita dg functors, transforms the semi-orthogonal decompositions in the sense of Bondal-Orlov into direct sums and which is universal for these properties. We compare our construction with that of Bondal-Larsen-Lunts. ----- A l'aide des outils de l'algebre homotopique de Quillen, on construit `l'invariant additif universel', c'est-a-dire un foncteur defini sur la categorie des petites d…
We construct a "diagonal" cofibrantly generated model structre on the category of simplicial objects in the category of topological categories sCat_{Top}, which is the category of diagrams [Δ^{op}, Cat_{Top}]. Moreover, we prove that the diagonal model structures is left proper and cellular. We also prove that the category of \infty-groupoids (the full subcategory of topological categories) has a cofibrantly generated model structure and is Quillen equivalent to the model category of simplicial sets, which proves the Grothendieck's homotopy hypothesis.
We prove that algebraic G-theory in is representable in unstable and stable motivic homotopy categories; in the stable category we identify it with the Borel-Moore theory associated to algebraic K-theory, and show that such an identification is compatible with the functorialities defined by Quillen and Thomason.
In this paper we introduce a derivability criterion of functors based on the existence of adjunctions rather than on the existence of resolutions. It constitutes a converse of Quillen-Maltsiniotis Derived Adjunction Theorem. We present two consequences of our derivability criterion. On the one hand, we prove that the two notions for homotopy colimits corresponding to Grothendieck derivators and Quillen model categories are equivalent. On the other hand, we deduce that the internal hom for derived Morita theory constructed by B. Toen is indeed the right derived functor of the internal hom of dg…
We study Quillen's model category structure for homotopy of simplicial objects in the context of Janelidze, Marki and Tholen's semi-abelian categories. This model structure exists as soon as the base category A is regular Mal'tsev and has enough regular projectives; then the fibrations are the Kan fibrations of simplicial objects in A. When, moreover, A is semi-abelian, weak equivalences and homology isomorphisms coincide.
This paper is to construct unstable, Morita stable and stable bivariant algebraic Kasparov $K$-theory spectra of $k$-algebras. These are shown to be homotopy invariant, excisive in each variable $K$-theories. We prove that the spectra represent universal unstable, Morita stable and stable bivariant homology theories respectively.
Given a bounding class $B$, we construct a bounded refinement $BK(-)$ of Quillen's $K$-theory functor from rings to spaces. $BK(-)$ is a functor from weighted rings to spaces, and is equipped with a comparison map $BK \to K$ induced by "forgetting control". In contrast to the situation with $B$-bounded cohomology, there is a functorial splitting $BK(-) \simeq K(-) \times BK^{rel}(-)$ where $BK^{rel}(-)$ is the homotopy fiber of the comparison map.
