We show that the homotopy theory of differential graded algebras coincides with the homotopy theory of HZ-algebra spectra. Namely, we construct Quillen equivalences between the Quillen model categories of (unbounded) differential graded algebras and HZ-algebra spectra. We also construct Quillen equivalences between the differential graded modules and module spectra over these algebras. We use these equivalences in turn to produce algebraic models for rational stable model categories. We show that bascially any rational stable model category is Quillen equivalent to modules over a differential graded Q-algebra (with many objects).
We consider the cotriple resolution of algebras over operads in differential graded modules. We focus, to be more precise, on the example of algebras over the differential graded Barratt-Eccles operad and on the example of commutative alegbras. We prove that the geometric realization of the cotriple resolution (in the sense of model categories) gives a cofibrant resolution functor on these categories of differential graded algebras.
We prove that every commutative differential graded algebra whose cohomology is a simply-connected Poincare duality algebra is quasi-isomorphic to one whose underlying algebra is simply-connected and satisfies Poincare duality in the same dimension. This has application in particular to the study of CDGA models of configuration spaces on a closed manifold.
We investigate the relationship between differential graded algebras (dgas) and topological ring spectra. Every dga C gives rise to an Eilenberg-Mac Lane ring spectrum denoted HC. If HC and HD are weakly equivalent, then we say C and D are topologically equivalent. Quasi-isomorphic dgas are topologically equivalent, but we produce explicit counter-examples of the converse. We also develop an associated notion of topological Morita equivalence using a homotopical version of tilting.
The paper gives a new proof that the model categories of stable modules for the rings Z/(p^2) and (Z/p)[ε]/(ε^2) are not Quillen equivalent. The proof uses homotopy endomorphism ring spectra. Our considerations lead to an example of two differential graded algebras which are derived equivalent but whose associated model categories of modules are not Quillen equivalent. As a bonus, we also obtain derived equivalent dgas with non-isomorphic K-theories.
Motivated by the construction of Steenrod cup-$i$ products in the singular cochain algebra of a space and in the algebra of non-commutative differential forms, we define a category of binomial cup-one differential graded algebras over the integers and over prime fields of positive characteristic. The Steenrod and Hirsch identities bind the cup-product, the cup-one product, and the differential in a package that we further enhance with a binomial ring structure arising from a ring of integer-valued rational polynomials. This structure allows us to define the free binomial cup-one differential g…
Minimal models of chain complexes associated with free torus actions on spaces have been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, we discuss these constructions using the language of operads. The main goal of this paper is to define a new Koszul operad that has projections onto several of the operads used in these minimal model constructions.
In the context of commutative differential graded algebras over $\mathbb Q$, we show that an iteration of "odd spherical fibration" creates a "total space" commutative differential graded algebra with only odd degree cohomology. Then we show for such a commutative differential graded algebra that, for any of its "fibrations" with "fiber" of finite cohomological dimension, the induced map on cohomology is injective.
This correction article is actually unnecessary. The proof of Theorem 1.2, concerning commutative HQ-algebra spectra and commutative differential graded algebras, in the author's paper [American Journal of Mathematics vol. 129 (2007) 351-379 (arxiv:math/0209215v4)] is correct as originally stated. Neil Strickland carefully proved that D is symmetric monoidal; so Proposition 4.7 and hence also Theorem 1.2 hold as stated. Strickland's proof will appear in joint work with Stefan Schwede; see related work in Strickland's [arxiv:0810.1747]. Note here D is defined as a colimit of chain complexes; in…
We describe a comparison between pretriangulated differential graded categories and certain stable infinity categories. Specifically, we use a model category structure on differential graded categories over k (a field of characteristic 0) where the weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences, and where the fibrant objects are in particular pretriangulated differential graded categories. We show the underlying infinity category of this model category is equivalent to the infinity category of k-linear stable infinity categories.
We construct a zig-zag of Quillen adjunctions between the homotopy theories of differential graded and simplicial categories. In an intermediate step we generalize Shipley-Schwede's work on connective DG algebras by extending the Dold-Kan correspondence to a Quillen equivalence between categories enriched over positive graded chain complexes and simplicial k-modules. As an application we obtain a conceptual explanation of Simpson's homotopy fiber construction.
The category of differential graded operads is a cofibrantly generated model category and as such inherits simplicial mapping spaces. The vertices of an operad mapping space are just operad morphisms. The 1-simplices represent homotopies between morphisms in the category of operads. The goal of this paper is to determine the homotopy of the operadic mapping spaces Map(E_n,C) with a cofibrant E_n-operad on the source and the commutative operad on the target. First, we prove that the homotopy class of a morphism phi: E_n -> C is uniquely determined by a multiplicative constant which gives the ac…
We equip the odd nilHecke algebra and its associated thick calculus category with digrammatically local differentials. The resulting differential graded Grothendieck groups are isomorphic to two different forms of the positive part of quantum sl(2) at a fourth root of unity.
Let $Q$ denote the cyclic group of order two. Using the Tate diagram we compute the $RO(Q)$-graded coefficients of Eilenberg-MacLane $Q$-spectra and describe their structure as a module over the coefficients of the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum of the Burnside Mackey functor. If the underlying Mackey functor is a Green functor, we also infer the multiplicative structure on the $RO(Q)$-graded coefficients.
In this paper we show that non abelian extensions of an associative algebra $\mathcal{B}$ by an associative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ can be viewed as Maurer-Cartan elements of a suitable differential graded Lie algebra $L$. In particular we show that $\mathcal{MC}(L)$, the Deligne groupoid of $L$, is in 1-1 correspondence with the non-abelian cohomology $H^2_{nab}(\mathcal{B},\mathcal{A})$.
This text gives a construction of a differential graded Lie algebra in Nori's category of effective homological motives. In fact the construction works in more a general setting than that of an Abelian category. This allows us to give the rational homotopy Lie algebra of a 1-connected space a motivic structure. As a consequence the rational homotopy Lie algebra inherits a mixed Hodge structure and Galois module structure.
We introduce a convenient framework for constructing and analyzing orthogonal Thom spectra arising from virtual vector bundles. This framework enables us to set up a theory of orientations and graded Thom isomorphisms with good multiplicative properties. The theory is applied to the analysis of logarithmic structures on commutative ring spectra.
In this paper we establish a faithfulness result, in a homotopical sense, between a subcategory of the model category of augmented differential graded commutative algebras CDGA and a subcategory of the model category of augmented differential graded algebras DGA over the field of rational numbers $\mathbb{Q}$.
This is a (slightly edited) version of the PhD dissertation of the author, submitted to Brown University in July 2005. We construct a homotopy calculus of functors in the sense of Goodwillie for the categories of rational homotopy theory. More precisely, given a homotopy functor between any of the categories of differential graded vector spaces (DG), reduced differential graded vector spaces, differential graded Lie algebras (DGL), and differential graded coalgebras (DGC), we show that there is an associated approximating "rational Taylor tower" of excisive functors. The fibers in this tower a…
We construct a new spectrum of units for a commutative symmetric ring spectrum that detects the difference between a periodic ring spectrum and its connective cover. It is augmented over the sphere spectrum. The homotopy cofiber of its augmentation map is a non-connected delooping of the usual spectrum of units whose bottom homotopy group detects periodicity. Our approach builds on the graded variant of E-infinity spaces introduced in joint work with Christian Schlichtkrull. We construct a group completion model structure for graded E-infinity spaces and use it to exhibit our spectrum of units…
We propose a generalization of Sullivan's de Rham homotopy theory to non-simply connected spaces. The formulation is such that the real homotopy type of a manifold should be the closed tensor dg-category of flat bundles on it much the same as the real homotopy type of a simply connected manifold is the de Rham algebra in original Sullivan's theory. We prove the existence of a model category structure on the category of small closed tensor dg-categories and as a most simple case, confirm an equivalence between the homotopy category of spaces whose fundamental groups are finite and whose higher …
We define a topological Hochschild (THH) and cyclic (TC) homology theory for differential graded (dg) categories and construct several non-trivial natural transformations from algebraic K-theory to THH(-). In an intermediate step, we prove that the homotopy theory of dg categories is Quillen equivalent, through a four step zig-zag of Quillen equivalences, to the homotopy theory of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectral categories. Finally, we show that over the rationals two dg categories are topological equivalent if and only if they are quasi-equivalent.
We provide two criteria for discarding the formality of a differential graded Lie algebra in terms of higher Whitehead brackets, which are the Lie analogue of the Massey products of a differential graded associative algebra. We also show that formality of a differential graded Lie algebra is not equivalent to the collapse of the Quillen spectral sequence. Finally, we use $L_\infty$ algebras and Quillen's formulation of rational homotopy theory to recover and improve a classical theorem for detecting higher Whitehead products in Sullivan minimal models and give some applications.
In this paper, we give a concrete description of the higher homotopy groups (n>0) of the mapping space Map_{Alg}(R,S) for R and S unbounded differential graded algebras (DGA) over a commutative ring k. In the connective case, we describe the relation between the higher (negative) Hochschild cohomology $HH^{-n+1}(R,S)$ and higher homotopy groups $π_{n} Map_{Alg}(R,S)$, when $n>1$.
This is the second in a series of papers laying the foundations for a differential graded approach to derived differential geometry (and other geometries in characteristic zero). In this paper, we extend the classical notion of a dg-algebra to define, in particular, the notion of a differential graded algebra in the world of C-infinity rings. The opposite of the category of differential graded C-infinity algebras contains the category of differential graded manifolds as a full subcategory. More generally, this notion of differential graded algebra makes sense for algebras over any (super) Ferm…
We use homological perturbation machinery specific for the algebra category [P. Real. Homological Perturbation Theory and Associativity. Homology, Homotopy and Applications vol. 2, n. 5 (2000) 51-88] to give an algorithm for computing the differential structure of a small 1--homological model for commutative differential graded algebras (briefly, CDGAs). The complexity of the procedure is studied and a computer package in Mathematica is described for determining such models.
We construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of differential non-negatively graded quasi-coherent commutative $D_X$-algebras, where $D_X$ is the sheaf of differential operators of a smooth afine algebraic variety X. The paper contains an extensive appendix on D-modules, sheaves versus global sections, some more technical model categorical issues, as well as on relative Sullivan algebras. This article is the first of a series of works -located at the interface of homotopical algebra, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics - on a derived D-geometric approach to the …
A differential module is a module equipped with a square-zero endomorphism. This structure underpins complexes of modules over rings, as well as differential graded modules over graded rings. We establish lower bounds on the class--a substitute for the length of a free complex--and on the rank of a differential module in terms of invariants of its homology. These results specialize to basic theorems in commutative algebra and algebraic topology. One instance is a common generalization of the equicharacteristic case of the New Intersection Theorem of Hochster, Peskine, P. Roberts, and Szpiro, c…
In this paper one considers three homotopy functors on the category of manifolds, $hH^\ast, cH^\ast, sH^\ast,$ and parallel them with other three homotopy functors on the category of connected commutative differential graded algebras, $HH^\ast, CH^\ast, SH^\ast.$ If $P$ is a smooth 1-connected manifold and the algebra is the de-Rham algebra of $P$ the two pairs of functors agree but in general do not. The functors $ HH^\ast $ and $CH^\ast$ can be also derived as Hochschild resp. cyclic homology of commutative differential graded algebra, but this is not the way they are introduced here. The th…
On one hand, together with Pelle Steffens, we recently characterized the infinity category of derived manifolds up to equivalence by a universal property. On the other hand, it is shown in recent work of Behrend-Liao-Xu that the category of differential graded manifolds admits a homotopy theory. In this paper, we prove that the associated infinity category of dg-manifolds is equivalent to that of derived manifolds. This allows the well developed theory of dg-geometry to live in symbiosis with infinity categorical approach to derived differential geometry. As a consequence, we prove that a dg-C…
Peter Jorgensen introduced the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a simply connected Poincare duality space. He showed that its components are of the form ZA_infty and that the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a d-dimensional sphere consists of d-1 such components. In this thesis we show that this is the only case where finitely many components appear. More precisely, we construct families of modules, where for each family, each module lies in a different component. Depending on the cohomology dimensions of the differential graded algebras which appear, this is either a discrete family or an n-parameter fam…
A theory of dg schemes is developed so that it becomes a homotopy site, and the corresponding infinity category of stacks is equivalent to the infinity category of stacks, as constructed by Toen and Vezzosi, on the site of dg algebras whose cohomologies have finitely many generators in each degree. Stacks represented by dg schemes are shown to be derived schemes under this correspondence.
In this paper, we investigate the Whitney--de Rham complex $Ω^\bullet_\text{W} (X)$ associated to a semi-analytic subset $X$ of an analytic manifold $M$. This complex is a commutative differential graded algebra, that is defined to be the quotient of the de Rham complex of smooth differential forms on $M$ by the differential graded ideal generated by all smooth functions which are flat on $X$. We use Hironaka's desingularization theorem to prove a Poincaré Lemma for $Ω^\bullet_\text{W} (X)$ holds true, which entails that its cohomology is isomorphic to the real cohomology of $X$. Furthermore, …
This paper is a generalization of arXiv:0810.0808. We develop the de Rham homotopy theory of not necessarily nilpotent spaces, using closed dg-categories and equivariant dg-algebras. We see these two algebraic objects correspond in a certain way. We prove an equivalence between the homotopy category of schematic homotopy types and a homotopy category of closed dg-categories. We give a description of homotopy invariants of spaces in terms of minimal models. The minimal model in this context behaves much like the Sullivan's minimal model. We also provide some examples. We prove an equivalence be…
We construct two algebraic versions of homotopy theory of rational disconnected topological spaces, one based on differential graded commutative associative algebras and the other one on complete differential graded Lie algebras. As an application of the developed technology we obtain results on the structure of Maurer-Cartan spaces of complete differential graded Lie algebras.
This paper introduces the category of marked curved Lie algebras with curved morphisms, equipping it with a closed model category structure. This model structure is---when working over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero---Quillen equivalent to a model category of pseudo-compact unital commutative differential graded algebras; this extends known results regarding the Koszul duality of unital commutative differential graded algebras and differential graded Lie algebras. As an application of the theory developed within this paper, algebraic deformation theory is extended to func…
The Hochschild cohomology of a differential graded algebra, or a differential graded category, admits a natural map to the graded center of its homology category: the characteristic homomorphism. We interpret it as an edge homomorphism in a spectral sequence. This gives a conceptual explanation of the failure of the characteristic homomorphism to be injective or surjective, in general. To illustrate this, we discuss modules over the dual numbers, coherent sheaves over algebraic curves, as well as examples related to free loop spaces and string topology.
The rational homotopy type of a differential graded algebra (DGA) can be represented by a family of tensors on its cohomology, which constitute an $A_\infty$-minimal model of this DGA. When only the cohomology is needed to determine the rational homotopy type, then the DGA is called formal. By a theorem of Miller, a compact $k$-connected manifold is formal if its dimension is not greater than $4k+2$. We expand this theorem and a result of Crowley-Nordström to prove that if the dimension of a compact $k$-connected manifold $N\leq (l+1)k+2$, then its de Rham complex has an $A_\infty$-minimal mod…
