A Kakeya set $S \subset (\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^n$ is a set containing a line in each direction. We show that, when $N$ is any square-free integer, the size of the smallest Kakeya set in $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^n$ is at least $C_{n,ε} N^{n - ε}$ for any $ε$ -- resolving a special case of a conjecture of Hickman and Wright. Previously, such bounds were only known for the case of prime $N$. We also show that the case of general $N$ can be reduced to lower bounding the $\mathbb{F}_p$ rank of the incidence matrix of points and hyperplanes over $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field consisting of $q$ elements and let $n \geq 1$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the size of local Kakeya sets with respect to subsets of $\mathbb{F}^{n}$ and obtain upper and lower bounds for the minimum size of a (local) Kakeya set with respect to an arbitrary set ${\mathcal T} \subseteq \mathbb{F}^{n}.$
A subset U of a group G is called k-universal if U contains a translate of every k-element subset of G. We give several nearly optimal constructions of small k-universal sets, and use them to resolve an old question of Erdos and Newman on bases for sets of integers, and to obtain several extensions for other groups.

We study variants of the Erd\H os distance problem and dot products problem in the setting of the integers modulo $q$, where $q = p^{\ell}$ is a power of an odd prime.
In a recent paper, Grau et al. (2017) studied the zero divisor graphs of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $n$, and computed the domination number of the undirected zero divisor graph of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $n$. But the case $n$ is a power of prime numbers remained open. In this note, this problem is solved. We also show the automorphism group of the zero divisor graph of the ring of Lipschitz integers modulo $2^s$.
Converting modulo flows into integer-valued flows is one of the most critical steps in the study of integer flows. Tutte and Jaeger's pioneering work shows the equivalence of modulo flows and integer-valued flows for ordinary graphs. However, such equivalence does not hold any more for signed graphs. This motivates us to study how to convert modulo flows into integer-valued flows for signed graphs. In this paper, we generalize some early results by Xu and Zhang (Discrete Math.~299, 2005), Schubert and Steffen (European J. Combin.~48, 2015), and Zhu (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B~112, 2015), and sho…
We study central hyperplane arrangements with integral coefficients modulo positive integers $q$. We prove that the cardinality of the complement of the hyperplanes is a quasi-polynomial in two ways, first via the theory of elementary divisors and then via the theory of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. This result is useful for determining the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding real arrangement. With the former approach, we also prove that intersection lattices modulo $q$ are periodic except for a finite number of $q$'s.
We prove two new forms of Jacobi-type J-fraction expansions generating the binomial coefficients, $\binom{x+n}{n}$ and $\binom{x}{n}$, over all $n \geq 0$. Within the article we establish new forms of integer congruences for these binomial coefficient variations modulo any (prime or composite) $h \geq 2$ and compare our results with existing known congruences for the binomial coefficients modulo primes $p$ and prime powers $p^k$. We also prove new exact formulas for these binomial coefficient cases from the expansions of the $h^{th}$ convergent functions to the infinite J-fraction series gener…
Originally motivated by algebraic invariant theory, we present an algorithm to enumerate integer vectors modulo the action of a permutation group. This problem generalizes the generation of unlabeled graph up to an isomorphism. In this paper, we present the full development of a generation engine by describing the related theory, establishing a mathematical and practical complexity, and exposing some benchmarks. We next show two applications to effective invariant theory and effective Galois theory.
The study of graph drawings on 2-surfaces is an active area of mathematical research. Our main results are criteria for integer and modulo 2 embeddability of graphs to surfaces.
If $S$ is a subset of an abelian group $G$, the polychromatic number of $S$ in $G$ is the largest integer $k$ so that there is a $k-$coloring of the elements of $G$ such that every translate of $S$ in $G$ gets all $k$ colors. We determine the polychromatic number of all sets of size 2 or 3 in the group of integers mod n.
Let $a$ and $m>0$ be integers. We show that for any integer $b$ relatively prime to $m$, the set $\{a^n+bn:\ n=1,\ldots,m^2\}$ contains a complete system of residues modulo $m$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer $n>1$ can be written as $k+m$ with $2^k+m$ prime, where $k$ and $m$ are positive integers.
The work considers an equivalence relation in the set of all $n\times m$ matrices with entries in the set $[p]=\{ 0,1,\ldots , p-1 \}$. In each element of the factor-set generated by this relation, we define the concept of canonical matrix, namely the minimal element with respect to the lexicographic order. We have found a necessary and sufficient condition for an arbitrary matrix with entries in the set $[p]$ to be canonical. For this purpose, the matrices are uniquely represented by ordered n-tuples of integers.
We explore a new type of replacement of patterns in permutations, suggested by James Propp, that does not preserve the length of permutations. In particular, we focus on replacements between 123 and a pattern of two integer elements. We apply these replacements in the classical sense; that is, the elements being replaced need not be adjacent in position or value. Given each replacement, the set of all permutations is partitioned into equivalence classes consisting of permutations reachable from one another through a series of bi-directional replacements. We break the eighteen replacements of i…
An integral coefficient matrix determines an integral arrangement of hyperplanes in R^m. After modulo q reduction, the same matrix determines an arrangement A_q of "hyperplanes" in Z^m. In the special case of central arrangements, Kamiya, Takemura and Terao [J. Algebraic Combin., to appear] showed that the cardinality of the complement of A_q in Z_q^m is a quasi-polynomial in q. Moreover, they proved in the central case that the intersection lattice of A_q is periodic from some q on. The present paper generalizes these results to the case of non-central arrangements. The paper also studies the…
Given a finite family F of linear forms with integer coefficients, and a compact abelian group G, an F-free set in G is a measurable set which does not contain solutions to any equation L(x)=0 for L in F. We denote by d_F(G) the supremum of m(A) over F-free sets A in G, where m is the normalized Haar measure on G. Our main result is that, for any such collection F of forms in at least three variables, the sequence d_F(Z_p) converges to d_F(R/Z) as p tends to infinity over primes. This answers an analogue for Z_p of a question that Ruzsa raised about sets of integers.
We show that for every $0 < ε\leq 1$ and integer $k\geq 1$, there exists an integer $n = n(ε,k)$ so that for all primes $p$, and integers $0 \leq a \leq p-1$, there exist integers $1 \leq x_1 < ... < x_n \leq p^ε$ such that $a \equiv x_1^{-1} + ... + x_n^{-1} \pmod{p}$. This extends a result of I. Shparlinski.
In this paper, we partially solve an open problem, due to J.C. Molluzzo in 1976, on the existence of balanced Steinhaus triangles modulo a positive integer $n$, that are Steinhaus triangles containing all the elements of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ with the same multiplicity. For every odd number $n$, we build an orbit in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, by the linear cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo $n$, which contains infinitely many balanced Steinhaus triangles. This orbit, in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, is obtained from an integer sequence called the universal sequence. We show…
Thomassen, in 1983, conjectured that for a positive integer $k$, every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph of minimum degree at least $k + 1$ contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. In this paper, we settle this conjecture affirmatively.
The commuting graph of a group G, denoted by Gamma(G), is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of G and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if they commute. Let Z_m be the commutative ring of equivalence classes of integers modulo m. In this paper we investigate the connectivity and diameters of the commuting graphs of GL(n,Z_m) to contribute to the conjecture that there is a universal upper bound on diam(Gamma(G)) for any finite group G when Gamma(G) is connected. For any composite m, it is shown that Gamma(GL(n,Z_m)) and Gamma(M(n,Z_m)) are conne…
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $α_n$ be the arithmetic function which assigns the multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. Similarly, let $β_n$ assign the projective multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. In this paper, we present a study of these two arithmetic functions. In particular, we prove that for positive integers $n_1$ and $n_2$ with the same square-free part, there exists an exact relationship between the functions $α_{n_1}$ and $α_{n_2}$ and between the funct…
For any positive integers l and m, a set of integers is said to be (weakly) l-sum-free modulo m if it contains no (pairwise distinct) elements $x_1,x_2,...,x_l,y$ satisfying the congruence $x_1+\...+x_l\equiv y\bmod{m}$. It is proved that, for any positive integers k and l, there exists a largest integer $n$ for which the set of the first $n$ positive integers $\{1,2,\...,n\}$ admits a partition into k (weakly) l-sum-free sets modulo m. This number is called the generalized (weak) Schur number modulo $m$, associated with k and l. In this paper, for all positive integers k and l, the exact valu…
Given a constant $α>0$, an $n$-vertex graph is called an $α$-expander if every set $X$ of at most $n/2$ vertices in $G$ has an external neighborhood of size at least $α|X|$. Addressing a question posed by Friedman and Krivelevich in [Combinatorica, 41(1), (2021), pp. 53--74], we prove the following result: Let $k>1$ be an integer with smallest prime divisor $p$. Then for $α>\frac{1}{p-1}$ every sufficiently large $α$-expanding graph contains cycles of length congruent to any given residue modulo $k$. This result is almost best possible, in the following sense: There exists an absolute constant…
Given a prime $p$ and a positive integer $k$, let $\mathrm{M}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z})$ be the ring of $n \times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z}$. We consider the number of solutions $X \in \mathrm{M}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z})$ to the polynomial equation $P(X) = 0$, where $P(t)$ is a monic polynomial in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z})[t]$ whose reduction modulo $p$ is square-free over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ of $p$ elements. Noting that $P(X) = 0$ if and only if $\mathrm{cok}(P(X)) \simeq (\mathbb{Z}/p^{k}\mathbb{Z})^{n}$, we give a conjectural generalization …
Let $n$ be a positive integer. For any integer $a$, we say that $a$ is idempotent modulo $n$ if $a^2\equiv a\pmod n$. The $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any $\ell$ integers contain one or more integers whose product is idempotent modulo $n$. We gave a sharp lower bound of the $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant, in particular, we determined the $n$-modular Erdős-Burgess constant in the case when $n$ is a prime power or a product of pairwise distinct primes.
Let n be a positive odd integer and let p>n+1 be a prime. We mainly derive the following congruence: $$\sum_{0<i_1<...<i_n<p}(i_1/3)(-1)^{i_1}/(i_1...i_n)=0 (mod p).$$
For a positive integer $\ell$, let $b_{\ell}(n)$ denote the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of a nonnegative integer $n$. Motivated by some recent conjectures of Keith and Zanello, we establish infinite families of congruences modulo $2$ for $b_3(n)$ and $b_{21}(n)$. We prove a specific case of a conjecture of Keith and Zanello on self-similarities of $b_3(n)$ modulo $2$. We next prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(2n+1)q^n$ is lacunary modulo arbitrary powers of $2$. We also prove that the series $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}b_9(4n)q^n$ is lacunary modulo $2$.
Let $A$ be a set in an abelian group $G$. For integers $h,r \geq 1$ the generalized $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(r)}A$, is the set of sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where each element appears in the sum at most $r$ times. If $G=\mathbb{Z}$ lower bounds for $|h^{(r)}A|$ are known, as well as the structure of the sets of integers for which $|h^{(r)}A|$ is minimal. In this paper we generalize this result by giving a lower bound for $|h^{(r)}A|$ when $G=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ for a prime $p$, and show new proofs for the direct and inverse problems in $\mathbb{Z}$.
Let p be an odd prime and let a be a positive integer. In this paper we investigate the sum $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}/m^k$ mod p^2, where h,m are p-adic integers with m\not=0 (mod p). For example, we show that if h\not=0 (mod p) and p^a>3 then $$ sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{hp^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-h/2)^k =(\frac{1-2h}{p^a})(1+h((4h-2)^{p-1}/h^{p-1}-1)) (mod p^2),$$ where (-) denotes the Jacobi symbol. Here is another remarkable congruence: If p>3 then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{p^a-1}{k}\binom{2k}{k}(-1)^k =3^{p-1}(\frac{p^a}3) (mod p^2).$$
In this paper we show the combinatorial structure of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ modulo sublattices selfsimilar to $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The tool we use for dealing with this purpose is the notion of association scheme. We classify when the scheme defined by the lattice is imprimitive and characterize its decomposition in terms of the decomposition of the gaussian integer defining the lattice. This arise in the classification of different forms of tiling $\mathbb{Z}^2$ by lattices of this type.
