Let $n$ be a positive integer and $α_n$ be the arithmetic function which assigns the multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. Similarly, let $β_n$ assign the projective multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. In this paper, we present a study of these two arithmetic functions. In particular, we prove that for positive integers $n_1$ and $n_2$ with the same square-free part, there exists an exact relationship between the functions $α_{n_1}$ and $α_{n_2}$ and between the functions $β_{n_1}$ and $β_{n_2}$. This allows us to reduce the determination of $α_n$ and $β_n$ to the case where $n$ is square-free. These arithmetic functions recently appeared in the context of an old problem of Molluzzo, and more precisely in the study of which arithmetic progressions yield a balanced Steinhaus triangle in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ for $n$ odd.
Prempreesuk, Noppakaew, and Pongsriiam determined the Zeckendorf representation of the multiplicative inverse of $2$ modulo $F_n$, for every positive integer $n$ not divisible by $3$, where $F_n$ denotes the $n$th Fibonacci number. We determine the Zeckendorf representation of the multiplicative inverse of $a$ modulo $F_n$, for every fixed integer $a \geq 3$ and for all positive integers $n$ with $\gcd(a, F_n) = 1$. Our proof makes use of the so-called base-$φ$ expansion of real numbers.
We study multiplicative dependence between elements in orbits ofalgebraic dynamical systems over number fields modulo a finitely generated multiplicative subgroup of the field. We obtain a series of results, many of which may be viewed as a blend of Northcott's theorem on boundedness of preperiodic points and Siegel's theorem on finiteness of solutions to $S$-unit equations.
We obtain effective bounds on the heights of algebraic integers whose orbits contain multiplicatively dependent values modulo S-integers. Our method is based on a new upper bound on the so-called S-height of polynomial values over the ring of integers of $\mathbb{K}$. Our results provide an effective variant of a recent result of A.Bérczes, A.Ostafe, I.E.Shparlinski and J.H.Silverman (arXiv:1811.04971) on multiplicative dependence modulo a finitely generated subgroup by eliminating the use of non-effective results by K.F.Roth and G.Faltings.
We prove that there exists an absolute constant $c>0$ such that if an arithmetic progression $\cP$ modulo a prime number $p$ does not contain zero and has the cardinality less than $cp$, then it can not be represented as a product of two subsets of cardinality greater than 1, unless $\cP=-\cP$ or $\cP=\{-2r,r,4r\}$ for some residue $r$ modulo $p$.
In the present paper we obtain new upper bound estimates for the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x\equiv y r\pmod p;\quad x,y\in \mathbb{N},\quad x,y\le H,\quad r\in\cU, $$ for certain ranges of $H$ and $|\cU|$, where $\cU$ is a subset of the field of residue classes modulo $p$ having small multiplicative doubling. We then use this estimate to show that the number of solutions of the congruence $$ x^n\equiv λ\pmod p; \quad x\in \N, \quad L<x<L+p/n, $$ is at most $p^{\frac{1}{3}-c}$ uniformly over positive integers $n, λ$ and $L$, for some absolute constant $c>0$. This implies, in part…
For positive integers $K$ and $L$, we introduce and study the notion of $K$-multiplicative dependence over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, as well as $L$-linear dependence of points on elliptic curves in reduction modulo primes. One of our main results shows that, given non-zero rational functions $φ_1,\ldots,φ_m, \varrho_1,\ldots,\varrho_n\in\mathbb{Q}(X)$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over the integers $\mathbb{Z}$, for any sufficiently large prime $p$, for all but finitely many $α\in\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, at most one of the foll…
We introduce a new arithmetic function $a(n)$ defined to be the number of random multiplications by residues modulo $n$ before the running product is congruent to 0 modulo $n$. We give several formulas for computing the values of this function and analyze its asymptotic behavior. We find that it is closely related to $P_1(n)$, the largest prime divisor of $n$. In particular, $a(n)$ and $P_1(n)$ have the same average order asymptotically. Furthermore, the difference between the functions $a(n)$ and $P_1(n)$ is $o(1)$ as $n$ tends to infinity on a set with density approximately $0.623$. On the o…
Let $E_1$ and $E_2$ be elliptic curves in Legendre form with integer parameters. We show there exists a constant $C$ such that for almost all primes, for all but at most $C$ pairs of points on the reduction of $E_1 \times E_2$ modulo $p$ having equal $x$ coordinate, at least one among $P_1$ and $P_2$ has a large group order. We also show similar abundance over finite fields of elements whose images under the reduction modulo $p$ of a finite set of rational functions have large multiplicative orders
In this note we study Kloosterman sums twisted by a multiplicative characters modulo a prime power. We show, by an elementary calculation, that these sums become equidistributed on the real line with respect to a suitable measure.
Let $f(n)$ be a multiplicative function with $|f(n)|\leq 1, q$ be a prime number and $a$ be an integer with $(a, q)=1, χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo $q$. Let $\varepsilon$ be a sufficiently small positive constant, $A$ be a large constant, $q^{\frac12+\varepsilon}\ll N\ll q^A$. In this paper, we shall prove that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q} $$ and that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a_1)\cdotsχ(n+a_t)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q}, $$ where $t\geq 2, a_1, \ldots, a_t$ are distinct integers modulo $q$.
We show, under some natural restrictions, that some semigroup orbits of polynomials cannot contain too many elements of small multiplicative order modulo a large prime $p$, extending previous work of Shparlinski (2017).
In this paper, we study the average size of the product of a number and its multiplicative inverse modulo a prime p. This turns out to be related to moments of L-functions and leads to a curious asymptotic formula for a certain triple exponential sum.
We show that the binomial and related multiplicative character sums $$ \sum_{\stackrel{x=1}{(x,p)=1}}^{p^m} χ(x^l(Ax^k +B)^w),\hspace{3ex} \sum_{x=1}^{p^m} χ_1 (x)χ_2(Ax^k +B), $$ have a simple evaluation for large enough $m$ (for $m\geq 2$ if $p\nmid ABk$).
Let $f(n)$ be a multiplicative function satisfying $|f(n)|\leq 1$, $q$ $(\leq N^2)$ be a prime number and $a$ be an integer with $(a,\,q)=1$, $χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo $q$. In this paper, we shall prove that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a)\ll {N\over q^{1\over 4}}\log\log(6N)+q^{1\over 4}N^{1\over 2}\log(6N)+{N\over \sqrt{\log\log(6N)}}. $$ We shall also prove that \begin{align*} &\sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a_1)\cdotsχ(n+a_t)\ll {N\over q^{1\over 4}}\log\log(6N)\\ &\quad+q^{1\over 4}N^{1\over 2}\log(6N)+{N\over \sqrt{\log\log(6N)}}, \end{align*} where $t\geq 2$, $a_1,\,\cdots,\,…
Let $χ$ range over the $(p-1)/2$ even Dirichlet characters modulo a prime $p$ and denote by $θ(x,χ)$ the associated theta series. The asymptotic behaviour of the second and fourth moments proved by Louboutin and the author implies that there exists at least $ \gg p/ \log p$ characters such that the associated theta function does not vanish at a fixed point. Constructing a suitable mollifier, we improve this result and show that there exists at least $ \gg p/ \sqrt{\log p}$ characters such that $θ(x,χ) \neq 0$ for any $x>0$. We give similar results for odd Dirichlet characters mod $p$.
A primitive root modulo an integer $n$ is the generator of the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n$. Gauss proved that for any prime number $p$ greater than $3$, the sum of its primitive roots is congruent to $1$ modulo $p$ while its product is congruent to $μ(p-1)$ modulo $p$, where $μ$ is the Möbius function. In this paper, we will generalize these two interesting congruences and give the congruences of the sum and the product of integers with the same index modulo $n$.
Let $K$ be a number field, and let $G\subset K^\times$ be a finitely generated subgroup. Fix some prime number $\ell$, and consider the set of primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ satisfying the following property: the reduction of $G$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ is well-defined and has size coprime to $\ell$. We give a closed--form expression for the density of this set.
Given a finitely generated multiplicative subgroup of rational numbers $Γ$, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we determine an asymptotic formula for average over prime numbers, powers of the order of the reduction group modulo $p$. The problem was considered in the case of rank $1$ by Pomerance and Kurlberg. In the case when $Γ$ contains only positive numbers, we give an explicit expression for the involved density in terms of an Euler product. We conclude with some numerical computations.
We discuss how one could study asymptotics of cyclotomic quantities via the mean values of certain multiplicative functions and their Dirichlet series using a theorem of Delange. We show how this could provide a new approach to Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We focus on whether a fixed prime has a certain order modulo infinitely many other primes. We also give an estimate for the mean value of one such Dirichlet series.
For g,n coprime integers, let l_g(n) denote the multiplicative order of g modulo n. Motivated by a conjecture of Arnold, we study the average of l_g(n) as n <= x ranges over integers coprime to g, and x tending to infinity. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that this average is essentially as large as the average of the Carmichael lambda function. We also determine the asymptotics of the average of l_g(p) as p <= x ranges over primes.
Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we prove the following: If b is an integer greater than one, then the multiplicative order of b modulo N is larger than N^(1-ε) for all N in a density one subset of the integers. If A is a hyperbolic unimodular matrix with integer coefficients, then the order of A modulo p is greater than p^(1-ε) for all p in a density one subset of the primes. Moreover, the order of A modulo N is greater than N^(1-ε) for all N in a density one subset of the integers.
We give effective bounds for the set quasi-integral points in orbits of non-isotrivial rational maps over function fields under some conditions, generalizing previous work of Hsia and Silverman (2011) for orbits over function fields of characteristic zero. We then use this to prove finiteness results for algebraic functions whose orbit under a rational function has multiplicative dependent elements modulo rings of $S$-integers, generalizing recent results over number fields.
In this paper we introduce and study a family $Φ_k$ of arithmetic functions generalizing Euler's totient function. These functions are given by the number of solutions to the equation $\gcd(x_1^2+\ldots +x_k^2, n)=1$ with $x_1,\ldots,x_k \in {\mathbb{Z}}/n{\mathbb{Z}}$ which, for $k=2,4$ and $8$ coincide, respectively, with the number of units in the rings of Gaussian integers, quaternions and octonions over ${\mathbb{Z}}/n{\mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that $Φ_k$ is multiplicative for every $k$, we obtain an explicit formula for $Φ_k(n)$ in terms of the prime-power decomposition of $n$ and derive an…
Let $p$ be a large prime number and $g$ be any integer of multiplicative order $T$ modulo $p$. We obtain a new estimate of the double exponential sum $$ S=\sum_{n\in \mathcal{N}}\left|\sum_{m\in \mathcal{M} }e_p(an g^{m})\right|, \quad \gcd (a,p)=1, $$ where $\mathcal{N}$ and $\mathcal{M}$ are intervals of consecutive integers with $|\mathcal{N}|=N$ and $|\mathcal{M}|=M<T$ elements. One representative example is the following consequence of the main result: if $N=M\approx p^{1/3}$, then $|S|< N^{2-1/8 + o(1)}$. We then apply our estimate to obtain new results on additive congruences involving …
Let $ε$ be a fixed positive quantity, $m$ be a large integer, $x_j$ denote integer variables. We prove that for any positive integers $N_1,N_2,N_3$ with $N_1N_2N_3>m^{1+ε},$ the set $$ \{x_1x_2x_3 \pmod m: \quad x_j\in [1,N_j] \} $$ contains almost all the residue classes modulo $m$ (i.e., its cardinality is equal to $m+o(m)$). We further show that if $m$ is cubefree, then for any positive integers $N_1,N_2,N_3,N_4$ with $N_1N_2N_3N_4>m^{1+ε},$ the set $$ \{x_1x_2x_3x_4 \pmod m: \quad x_j\in [1,N_j] \} $$ also contains almost all the residue classes modulo $m.$ Let $p$ be a large prime paramet…
In this paper we give a refinement of the bound of D. A. Burgess for multiplicative character sums modulo a prime number $q$. This continues a series of previous logarithmic improvements, which are mostly due to H. Iwaniec and E. Kowalski. In particular, for any nontrivial multiplicative character $χ$ modulo a prime $q$ and any integer $r\ge 2$, we show that $$ \sum_{M<n\le M+N}χ(n) = O\left( N^{1-1/r}q^{(r+1)/4r^2}(\log q)^{1/4r}\right), $$ which sharpens previous results by a factor $(\log q)^{1/4r}$. Our improvement comes from averaging over numbers with no small prime factors rather than o…
We establish a connection between semi-primitive roots of the multiplicative group of integers modulo $2^{k}$ where $k\geq 3$, and the logarithmic base in the algorithm introduced by Fit-Florea and Matula (2004) for computing the discrete logarithm modulo $2^{k}$. Fit-Florea and Matula used properties of the semi-primitive root 3 modulo $2^{k}$ to obtain their results and provided a conversion formula for other possible bases. We show that their results can be extended to any semi-primitive root modulo $2^{k}$ and also present a generalized version of their algorithm to find the discrete logar…
Let $a>1$ be an integer. Denote by $l_a(n)$ the multiplicative order of $a$ modulo integer $n\geq 1$. We prove that there is a positive constant $δ$ such that if $x^{1-δ}\log^3 x = o(y)$, then $$ \frac1y \sum_{a<y} \frac1x \sum_{\substack{{a<n<x}\\{(a,n)=1}}}l_a(n) = \frac x{\log x}\exp \left(B\frac{\log\log x}{\log\log\log x}(1+o(1))\right)$$ where $$ B=e^{-γ}\prod_p \left(1-\frac 1{(p-1)^2(p+1)}\right).$$ This is an improvement over a statement in Kurlberg and Pomerance (see ~\cite{KP}): $$\frac{1}{x^2} \sum_{a<x} \sum_{a<n<x} l_a(n) = \frac x{\log x} \exp \left(B \frac{\log\log x} {\log\log…
The generalized group of units of the ring modulo $n$ was first introduced by El-Kassar and Chehade, written as $U^k(Z_n)$. This allows us to formulate a new generalization to the Euler phi function $φ(n)$, that represents the order of $% U^k(Z_n)$ and it is denoted by $φ^{k}(n).$ In this paper, we introduce this newly defined function, where we compute its explicit form and examine some of its properties similar to that of $φ(n)$. In addition, we study some generalized equations involving $φ^{k}(n)$ where complete solution is given for some equations by considering the general case and others…
Fix $a \in \mathbb{Z}$, $a\notin \{0,\pm 1\}$. A simple argument shows that for each $ε> 0$, and almost all (asymptotically 100% of) primes $p$, the multiplicative order of $a$ modulo $p$ exceeds $p^{\frac12-ε}$. It is an open problem to show the same result with $\frac12$ replaced by any larger constant. We show that if $a,b$ are multiplicatively independent, then for almost all primes $p$, one of $a,b,ab, a^2b, ab^2$ has order exceeding $p^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{30}}$. The same method allows one to produce, for each $ε> 0$, explicit finite sets $\mathcal{A}$ with the property that for almost …
We introduce a simple sieve-theoretic approach to studying partial sums of multiplicative functions which are close to their mean value. This enables us to obtain various new results as well as strengthen existing results with new proofs. As a first application, we show that for a completely multiplicative function $f : \mathbb{N} \to \{-1,1\},$ \begin{align*} \limsup_{x\to\infty}\Big|\sum_{n\leq x}μ^2(n)f(n)\Big|=\infty. \end{align*} This confirms a conjecture of Aymone concerning the discrepancy of square-free supported multiplicative functions. Secondly, we show that a completely multiplica…
We estimate double sums $$ S_χ(a, I, G) = \sum_{x \in I} \sum_{λ\in G} χ(x + aλ), \qquad 1\le a < p-1, $$ with a multiplicative character $χ$ modulo $p$ where $I= \{1,\ldots, H\}$ and $G$ is a subgroup of order $T$ of the multiplicative group of the finite field of $p$ elements. A nontrivial upper bound on $S_χ(a, I, G)$ can be derived from the Burgess bound if $H \ge p^{1/4+\varepsilon}$ and from some standard elementary arguments if $T \ge p^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is arbitrary. We obtain a nontrivial estimate in a wider range of parameters $H$ and $T$. We also estimate dou…
We define a new congruence relation on the set of integers, leading to a group similar to the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n$. It makes use of a symmetry almost omnipresent in modular multiplications and halves the number of residue classes. Using it, we are able to give an elegant description of some results due to Carl Schick, others are reduced to well-known theorems from algebra and number theory. Many concepts from number theory such as quadratic residues and primitive roots are equally applicable. It brings noticeable advantages in studying powers of odd primes, and in partic…
For every finite abelian group $G$, there are positive integers $n$ and $d$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to the multiplicative group of $d$-th powers of reduced residues modulo $n$.
An $x$-pseudopower to base $g$ is a positive integer which is not a power of $g$ yet is so modulo $p$ for all primes $p\le x$. We improve an upper bound for the least such number due to E. Bach, R. Lukes, J. Shallit, and H. C. Williams. The method is based on a combination of some bounds of exponential sums with new results about the average behaviour of the multiplicative order of $g$ modulo prime numbers.
Let $a>1$. Denote by $l_a(p)$ the multiplicative order of $a$ modulo $p$. We look for an estimate of sum of $\frac{l_a(p)}{p-1}$ over primes $p\leq x$ on average. When we average over $a\leq N$, we observe a statistic of $C\mathrm{Li}(x)$. P. J. Stephens ~\cite[Theorem 1]{S} proved this statistic for $N>\exp(c_1\sqrt{\log x})$ for some positive constant $c_1$. Upon this result, we give an explicit value of $c_1$. In fact, ~\cite[Theorem 1, 3]{S} hold with $N>\exp(3.42\sqrt{\log x})$, and ~\cite[Theorem 2, 4]{S} hold with $N>\exp(4.8365\sqrt{\log x})$. Also, we improve the range of $y$, from $y…
We consider $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields taking values in cyclotomic integers, such as characters and exponential sums. Through ideas of Deligne and Katz, we explore probabilistic properties of the reductions modulo a prime ideal, exploiting especially the determination of their integral monodromy groups. In particular, this gives a generalization of a result of Lamzouri-Zaharescu on the distribution of short sums of the Legendre symbol reduced modulo an integer to all multiplicative characters and to hyper-Kloosterman sums.
Let $λ(n)$ denote the exponent of the multiplicative group modulo $n$. We show that when $q$ is odd, each coprime residue class modulo $q$ is hit equally often by $λ(n)$ as $n$ varies. Under the stronger assumption that $\gcd(q,6)=1$, we prove that equidistribution persists throughout a Siegel--Walfisz-type range of uniformity. By similar methods we show that $λ(n)$ obeys Benford's leading digit law with respect to natural density. Moreover, if we assume GRH, then Benford's law holds for the order of $a$ mod $n$, for any fixed integer $a\notin \{0,\pm 1\}$.
We obtain several asymptotic formulas for the sum of the divisor function $τ(n)$ with $n \le x$ in an arithmetic progressions $n \equiv a \pmod q$ on average over $a$ from a set of several consecutive elements from set of reduced residues modulo $q$ and on average over arbitrary sets. The main goal is to obtain nontrivial results for $q \ge x^{2/3}$ with the small amount of averaging over $a$. We recall that for individual values of $a$ the limit of our current methods is $q \le x^{2/3-\varepsilon}$ for an arbitrary fixed $\varepsilon> 0$. Our method builds on an approach due to Blomer (2008) …
Let $a>1$ be an integer. Denote by $l_a(p)$ the multiplicative order of $a$ modulo primes $p$. We prove that if $\frac{x}{\log x\log\log x}=o(y)$, then $$\frac 1 y \sum_{a\leq y}\sum_{p\leq x}\frac{1}{l_a(p)}=\log x + C\log\log x+O\left(\frac x {y \log\log x}\right) $$ which is an improvement over a theorem by Felix ~\cite{Fe}. Additionally, we also prove two other average results If $\log^2 x = o(ψ(x))$ and $x^{1-δ}\log^3 x = o(y)$, then $$\frac1y \sum_{a<y} \sum_{\substack{{p<x} \\ {l_a(p)>\frac{x}{ψ(x)}}}} 1 = π(x) + O\left(\frac{x\log x}{ψ(x)}\right) + O\left(\frac{x^{2 - δ}\log^2 x}y\righ…
E. Artin conjectured that any integer $a >1$ which is not a perfect square is a primitive root modulo $p$ for infinitely many primes $p.$ Let $f_a(p)$ be the multiplicative order of the non-square integer $a$ modulo the prime $p.$ M. R. Murty and S. Srinivasan [10] showed that if $\sum_{p<x} \frac 1 {f_a(p)}= O(x^{1/4})$ then Artin's conjecture is true for $a.$ We relate the Murty-Srinivasan condition to sums involving the cyclotomic periods from the subfields of $\mathbb Q(e^{2πi/p})$ corresponding to the subgroups $<a> \subseteq \mathbb F*_p.$
We establish several results concerning the expected general phenomenon that, given a multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$, the values of $f(n)$ and $f(n+a)$ are "generally" independent unless $f$ is of a "special" form. First, we classify all bounded completely multiplicative functions having uniformly large gaps between its consecutive values. This implies the solution of the following folklore conjecture: for any completely multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{T}$ we have $$\liminf_{n\to\infty}|f(n+1)-f(n)|=0.$$ Second, we settle an old conjecture due to N.G. Chuda…
Although squaring integers is deterministic, squares modulo a prime, $p$, appear to be random. First, because they are all generated by the multiplicative linear congruential equation, $x_{i+1} = g^2 x_i \mod p$, where $x_0 = 1$ and $g$ is any primitive root of $p$, a pseudorandom number heuristic suggests that they are, in fact, unpredictable. Moreover, one type of cryptography makes use of discrete algorithms, which depends on the difficulty of solving $a = g^n$ for $n$ given $a$ and $g$. This suggests that the squares, which are exactly the even powers of $g$, are hard to identify. On the o…
