The processes of constructing some graphs from others using binary operations of union with intersection (gluing) are studied. For graph classes closed with respect to gluing operations the elemental and operational bases are introduced. The generating bases together with the system of restrictions on the gluing operation that preserves the characteristic properties of graphs form constructive descriptions of the closed classes of graphs.
It is shown that each closed class of graphs has a unique elemental basis and at least one operational basis. A constructive description of a closed class of all graphs and all bases precompletion closed sub-classes of it are considered. For each of them its characteristic properties and a diagram of the inclusion of sub-classes in super classes is given. Constructive descriptions are obtained for some classes of graphs with classical properties. In conclusion, some possible applications of constructive graph theory are discussed.
This paper is a sequel of our preceding paper (N. Kita: Constructive characterization for signed analogue of critical graphs I: Principal classes of radials and semiradials. arXiv preprint, arXiv:2001.00083, 2019). In the preceding paper, the concepts of radials and semiradials are introduced, and constructive characterizations for five principal classes of radials and semiradials are provided. Radials are a common analogue of critical graphs from matching theory and a class of directed graphs called flowgraphs, whereas semiradials are a relaxed concept of radials. Five classes of radials and …
This paper is the first from serial papers that provide constructive characterizations for classes of bidirected graphs known as radials and semiradials. In this paper, we provide constructive characterizations for five principle classes of radials and semiradials to be used for characterizing general radials and semiradials. A bidirected graph is a graph in which each end of each edge has a sign $+$ or $-$. Bidirected graphs are a common generalization of digraphs and signed graphs. We define a new concept of radials as a generalization of a classical concept in matching theory, critical grap…
In this article we will describe an algorithm to constructively enumerate non-isomorphic Union closed Sets and Moore sets. We confirm the number of isomorphism classes of Union closed Sets and Moore sets on n<=6 elements presented by other authors and give the number of isomorphism classes of Union closed Sets and Moore sets on 7 elements. Due to the enormous growth of the number of isomorphism classes it seems unlikely that constructive enumeration for 8 or more elements will be possible in the foreseeable future.
Constructive and nonconstructive techniques are employed to enumerate Latin squares and related objects. It is established that there are (i) 2036029552582883134196099 main classes of Latin squares of order 11; (ii) 6108088657705958932053657 isomorphism classes of one-factorizations of $K_{11,11}$; (iii) 12216177315369229261482540 isotopy classes of Latin squares of order 11; (iv) 1478157455158044452849321016 isomorphism classes of loops of order 11; and (v) 19464657391668924966791023043937578299025 isomorphism classes of quasigroups of order 11. The enumeration is constructive for the 1151666…
In this paper, we reveal an intriguing relationship between two seemingly unrelated notions: letter graphs and geometric grid classes of permutations. An important property common for both of them is well-quasi-orderability, implying, in a non-constructive way, a polynomial-time recognition of geometric grid classes of permutations and $k$-letter graphs for a fixed $k$. However, constructive algorithms are available only for $k=2$. In this paper, we present the first constructive polynomial-time algorithm for the recognition of $3$-letter graphs. It is based on a structural characterization of…
We show that the least exponential growth of counting functions which admits uncountably many closed permutation classes lies between 2^n and (2.33529...)^n.
Free-minor closed classes [2] and free-planar graphs [3] are considered. Versions of Kuratowski-like theorem for free-planar graphs and Kuratowski theorem for planar graphs are considered.
For any pattern $α$ of length at most two, we enumerate equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths of length $n\geq 0$ where two paths are equivalent whenever the occurrence positions of $α$ are identical on these paths. As a byproduct, we give a constructive bijection between Motzkin paths and some equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths.
For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization.
In this work, we study the operations of handle slides introduced recently for delta-matroids by Iain Moffatt and Eunice Mphako-Banda. We then prove that the class of binary delta-matroids is the only class of delta-matroids closed under handle slides.
Chromatic polynomials have been studied extensively, giving us results such as the Fundamental Reduction Theorem and closed formulas for the chromatic polynomials of common classes of graphs. Though, none of those extend to the context of fractional colorings. We thus present closed formulas for the "fractional" chromatic polynomial - a function that counts the number of distinct $b$-fold $λ$-colorings on a given graph - of complete graphs, trees and forests, as well as a generalized form of the Fundamental Reduction Theorem.
Given a class of graphs G closed under taking minors, we study the maximum degree Δ_n of random graphs from G with n vertices. We prove several lower and upper bounds that hold with high probability. Among other results, we find classes of graphs providing orders of magnitude for Δ_n not observed before, such us \log n/ \log \log \log n and \log n/ \log \log \log \log n.
Machines whose main purpose is to permute and sort data are studied. The sets of permutations that can arise are analysed by means of finite automata and avoided pattern techniques. Conditions are given for these sets being enumerated by rational generating functions.
The clustered chromatic number of a graph class is the minimum integer $t$ such that for some $C$ the vertices of every graph in the class can be colored in $t$ colors so that every monochromatic component has size at most $C$. We show that the clustered chromatic number of the class of graphs embeddable on a given surface is four, proving the conjecture of Esperet and Ochem. Additionally, we study the list version of the concept and characterize the minor-closed classes of graphs of bounded treewidth with given clustered list chromatic number. We further strengthen the above results to solve …
A minor-closed class of graphs is a set of labelled graphs which is closed under isomorphism and under taking minors. For a minor-closed class $C$, we let $c_n$ be the number of graphs in $C$ which have $n$ vertices. A recent result of Norine et al. shows that for all minor-closed class $C$, there is a constant $r$ such that $c_n < r^n n!$. Our main results show that the growth rate of $c_n$ is far from arbitrary. For example, no minor-closed class $C$ has $c_n= r^{n+o(n)} n!$ with $0 < r < 1$ or $1 < r < ξ\approx 1.76$.
Let A be a finite set with at least two elements. The composition of two classes I and J of operations on A, is defined as the set of all compositions of functions in I with functions in J. This binary operation gives a monoid structure to the set E_A of all equational classes of operations on A. The set E_A of equational classes of operations on A also constitutes a complete distributive lattice under intersection and union. Clones of operations, i.e. classes containing all projections and idempotent under class composition, also form a lattice which is strictly contained in E_A. In the Boole…
The aim of the paper is to enumerate all closed knight paths of length n over a square board of size n+1. The closed knight paths of length 4, 6 and 8 are classified up to equivalence. We determine that there are exactly 3 equivalence classes of closed knight paths of length 4, exactly 25 equivalence classes of closed knight paths of length 6 and exactly 478 equivalence classes of closed knight paths of length 8.
For a graph class $\mathcal{F}$, let $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a graph in $\mathcal{F}$ on $n$ vertices. We show that for every proper minor-closed graph class $\mathcal{F}$ the function $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n) - Δn$ is eventually periodic, where $Δ= \lim_{n \to \infty} ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)/n$ is the limiting density of $\mathcal{F}$. This confirms a special case of a conjecture by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. In particular, the limiting density of every proper minor-closed graph class is rational, which answers a question of Eppstein. As a major step in the proof…
Rabinovitch showed in 1978 that the interval orders having a representation consisting of only closed unit intervals have order dimension at most 3. This article shows that the same dimension bound applies to two other classes of posets: those having a representation consisting of unit intervals (but with a mixture of open and closed intervals allowed) and those having a representation consisting of closed intervals with lengths in $\{0,1\}$.
Given a minor-closed class $\mathcal{A}$ of graphs, let $β_{\mathcal{A}}$ denote the supremum over all graphs in $\mathcal{A}$ of the ratio of edges to vertices. We investigate the set $B$ of all such values $β_{\mathcal{A}}$, taking further the project begun by Eppstein. Amongst other results, we determine the small values in $B$ (those up to 2); we show that $B$ is `asymptotically dense'; and we answer some questions posed by Eppstein.
A permutation class which is closed under pattern involvement may be described in terms of its basis. The wreath product construction X \wr Y of two permutation classes X and Y is also closed, and we investigate classes Y with the property that, for any finitely based class X, the wreath product X \wr Y is also finitely based.
Let $\cM$ be a minor-closed class of matroids that does not contain arbitrarily long lines. The growth rate function, $h:\bN\rightarrow \bN$ of $\cM$ is given by $$h(n) = \max(|M|\, : \, M\in \cM, simple, rank-$n$).$$ The Growth Rate Theorem shows that there is an integer $c$ such that either: $h(n)\le c\, n$, or ${n+1 \choose 2} \le h(n)\le c\, n^2$, or there is a prime-power $q$ such that $\frac{q^n-1}{q-1} \le h(n) \le c\, q^n$; this separates classes into those of linear density, quadratic density, and base-$q$ exponential density. For classes of base-$q$ exponential density that contain n…
The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We prove that for every graph $H$, the clustered chromatic number of the class of $H$-minor-free graphs is tied to the tree-depth of $H$. In particular, if $H$ is connected with tree-depth $t$ then every $H$-minor-free graph is $(2^{t+1}-4)$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c(H)$. This provides the first evidence for a conjecture of Ossona de Mendez, Oum and Wood (20…
We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).
The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We determine the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded treedepth, and prove a best possible upper bound on the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded pathwidth. As a consequence, we determine the fractional clustered chromatic number of every minor-closed class.
Pippenger's Galois theory of finite functions and relational constraints is extended to the infinite case. The functions involved are functions of several variables on a set $A$ and taking values in a possibly different set $B$, where any or both of $A$ and $B$ may be finite or infinite.
We prove that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded layered pathwidth if and only if some apex-forest is not in the class. This generalises a theorem of Robertson and Seymour, which says that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded pathwidth if and only if some forest is not in the class.
We establish a novel bijective encoding that represents permutations as forests of decorated (or enriched) trees. This allows us to prove local convergence of uniform random permutations from substitution-closed classes satisfying a criticality constraint. It also enables us to reprove and strengthen permuton limits for these classes in a new way, that uses a semi-local version of Aldous' skeleton decomposition for size-constrained Galton--Watson trees.
We prove that for every proper minor-closed class $M$ of matroids representable over a prime field, there exists a constant-competitive matroid secretary algorithm for the matroids in $M$. This result relies on the extremely powerful matroid minor structure theory being developed by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. We also note that for asymptotically almost all matroids, the matroid secretary algorithm that selects a random basis, ignoring weights, is $(2+o(1))$-competitive. In fact, assuming the conjecture that almost all matroids are paving, there is a $(1+o(1))$-competitive algorithm for almos…

Baker devised a powerful technique to obtain approximation schemes for various problems restricted to planar graphs. Her technique can be directly extended to various other graph classes, among the most general ones the graphs avoiding a fixed apex graph as a minor. Further generalizations (e.g., to all proper minor closed graph classes) are known, but they use a combination of techniques and usually focus on somewhat restricted classes of problems. We present a new type of graph decompositions (thin systems of overlays) generalizing Baker's technique and leading to straightforward polynomial-…
The main problem in the area of graph property testing is to understand which graph properties are \emph{testable}, which means that with constantly many queries to any input graph $G$, a tester can decide with good probability whether $G$ satisfies the property, or is far from satisfying the property. Testable properties are well understood in the dense model and in the bounded degree model, but little is known in sparse graph classes when graphs are allowed to have unbounded degree. This is the setting of the \emph{sparse model}. We prove that for any proper minor-closed class $\mathcal{G}$,…
We consider uniform random permutations in proper substitution-closed classes and study their limiting behavior in the sense of permutons. The limit depends on the generating series of the simple permutations in the class. Under a mild sufficient condition, the limit is an elementary one-parameter deformation of the limit of uniform separable permutations, previously identified as the Brownian separable permuton. This limiting object is therefore in some sense universal. We identify two other regimes with different limiting objects. The first one is degenerate; the second one is nontrivial and…
In this paper we show that every graph of pathwidth less than $k$ that has a path of order $n$ also has an induced path of order at least $\frac{1}{3} n^{1/k}$. This is an exponential improvement and a generalization of the polylogarithmic bounds obtained by Esperet, Lemoine and Maffray (2016) for interval graphs of bounded clique number. We complement this result with an upper-bound. This result is then used to prove the two following generalizations: - every graph of treewidth less than $k$ that has a path of order $n$ contains an induced path of order at least $\frac{1}{4} (\log n)^{1/k}$; …
In this paper, we compute the posets of wide subcategories and ICE-closed subcategories from the lattice of torsion classes in an abelian length category in a purely lattice-theoretical way, by using the kappa map in a completely semidistributive lattice. As for the poset of wide subcategories, we give two more simple constructions via a bijection between wide subcategories and torsion classes with canonical join representations. More precisely, for a completely semidistributive lattice, we give two poset structures on the set of elements with canonical join representations: the kappa order (d…
Robin Thomas asked whether for every proper minor-closed class C, there exists a polynomial-time algorithm approximating the chromatic number of graphs from C up to a constant additive error independent on the class C. We show this is not the case: unless P=NP, for every integer k>=1, there is no polynomial-time algorithm to color a K_{4k+1}-minor-free graph G using at most chi(G)+k-1 colors. More generally, for every k>=1 and 1<=β<=4/3, there is no polynomial-time algorithm to color a K_{4k+1}-minor-free graph G using less than beta.chi(G)+(4-3beta)k colors. As far as we know, this is the fir…
