We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).
A class of graphs G is chi-bounded if the chromatic number of graphs in G is bounded by a function of the clique number. We show that if a class G is chi-bounded,then every class of graphs admitting a decomposition along cuts of small rank to graphs from G is chi-bounded. As a corollary, we obtain that every class of graphs with bounded rank-width (or equivalently, clique-width) is chi-bounded.
Tree decompositions of graphs are of fundamental importance in structural and algorithmic graph theory. Planar decompositions generalise tree decompositions by allowing an arbitrary planar graph to index the decomposition. We prove that every graph that excludes a fixed graph as a minor has a planar decomposition with bounded width and a linear number of bags. The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. We prove that planar decompositions are intimately related to the crossing number. In particular, a graph with bounded degree has l…
We prove that any quasirandom uniform hypergraph $H$ can be approximately decomposed into any collection of bounded degree hypergraphs with almost as many edges. In fact, our results also apply to multipartite hypergraphs and even to the sparse setting when the density of $H$ quickly tends to $0$ in terms of the number of vertices of $H$. Our results answer and address questions of Kim, Kühn, Osthus and Tyomkyn; and Glock, Kühn and Osthus as well as Keevash. The provided approximate decompositions exhibit strong quasirandom properties which is very useful for forthcoming applications. Our resu…
We prove that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a partition of its edges into $O(\sqrtΔ)$ parts (as $Δ\to\infty$) none of which contains $C_4$ as a subgraph. This bound is sharp up to a constant factor. Our proof uses an iterated random colouring procedure.
We prove that if $T_1,\dots, T_n$ is a sequence of bounded degree trees so that $T_i$ has $i$ vertices, then $K_n$ has a decomposition into $T_1,\dots, T_n$. This shows that the tree packing conjecture of Gyárfás and Lehel from 1976 holds for all bounded degree trees (in fact, we can allow the first $o(n)$ trees to have arbitrary degrees). Similarly, we show that Ringel's conjecture from 1963 holds for all bounded degree trees. We deduce these results from a more general theorem, which yields decompositions of dense quasi-random graphs into suitable families of bounded degree graphs. Our proof…
This paper studies graphs that have two tree decompositions with the property that every bag from the first decomposition has a bounded-size intersection with every bag from the second decomposition. We show that every graph in each of the following classes has a tree decomposition and a linear-sized path decomposition with bounded intersections: (1) every proper minor-closed class, (2) string graphs with a linear number of crossings in a fixed surface, (3) graphs with linear crossing number in a fixed surface. Here `linear size' means that the total size of the bags in the path decomposition …
We prove that if the prime graphs in a graph class have bounded lettericity, then the entire class has bounded lettericity if and only if it does not contain arbitrary large matchings, co-matchings, or a family of graphs that we call stacked paths.
Treewidth is a parameter that emerged from the study of minor closed classes of graphs (i.e. classes closed under vertex and edge deletion, and edge contraction). It in some sense describes the global structure of a graph. Roughly, a graph has treewidth $k$ if it can be decomposed by a sequence of noncrossing cutsets of size at most $k$ into pieces of size at most $k+1$. The study of hereditary graph classes (i.e. those closed under vertex deletion only) reveals a different picture, where cutsets that are not necessarily bounded in size (such as star cutsets, 2-joins and their generalization) …
In this paper, we give a constructive proof of the fact that the treewidth of a graph is at most its divisorial gonality. The proof gives a polynomial time algorithm to construct a tree decomposition of width at most $k$, when an effective divisor of degree $k$ that reaches all vertices is given. We also give a similar result for two related notions: stable divisorial gonality and stable gonality.
For some $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}\cup \infty$, we call a linear forest $k$-bounded if each of its components has at most $k$ edges. We will say a $(k,\ell)$-bounded linear forest decomposition of a graph $G$ is a partition of $E(G)$ into the edge sets of two linear forests $F_k,F_\ell$ where $F_k$ is $k$-bounded and $F_\ell$ is $\ell$-bounded. We show that the problem of deciding whether a given graph has such a decomposition is NP-complete if both $k$ and $\ell$ are at least $2$, NP-complete if $k\geq 9$ and $\ell =1$, and is in P for $(k,\ell)=(2,1)$. Before this, the only known NP-complet…
We study restricted homomorphism dualities in the context of classes with bounded expansion. This presents a generalization of restricted dualities obtained earlier for bounded degree graphs and also for proper minor closed classes. This is related to distance coloring of graphs and to the ''approximative version'' of Hadwiger conjecture.
We prove several results on approximate decompositions of edge-coloured quasirandom graphs into rainbow spanning structures. More precisely, we say that an edge-colouring of a graph is locally $\ell$-bounded if no vertex is incident to more than $\ell$ edges of any given colour, and that it is (globally) $g$-bounded if no colour appears more than $g$ times in the colouring. Note that every proper colouring of an $n$-vertex graph is locally $1$-bounded, and (globally) $n/2$-bounded. Our results imply the following: (i) The existence of approximate decompositions of edge-coloured $K_n$ into rain…

We give new decomposition theorems for classes of graphs that can be transduced in first-order logic from classes of sparse graphs -- more precisely, from classes of bounded expansion and from nowhere dense classes. In both cases, the decomposition takes the form of a single colored rooted tree of bounded depth where, in addition, there can be links between nodes that are not related in the tree. The constraint is that the structure formed by the tree and the links has to be sparse. Using the decomposition theorem for transductions of nowhere dense classes, we show that they admit low-shrubdep…
We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant $d$. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^λ$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $λ$ is bounded by $O(d)$. This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we …
