Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hereditary abelian category over a field $k$ with finite dimensional $\operatorname{Hom}$ and $\operatorname{Ext}$ spaces. It is proved that the bounded derived category $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ has a silting object iff $\mathcal{H}$ has a tilting object iff $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ has a simple-minded collection with acyclic $\operatorname{Ext}$-quiver. Along the way, we obtain a new proof for the fact that every presilting object of $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ is a partial silting object. We also consider the question of complements for pre-simple-minded collections. In contrast to presilting objects, a pre-simple-minded collection $\mathcal{R}$ of $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ can be completed into a simple-minded collection iff the $\operatorname{Ext}$-quiver of $\mathcal{R}$ is acyclic.
Silting modules are abundant. Indeed, they parametrise the definable torsion classes over a noetherian ring, and the hereditary torsion pairs of finite type over a commutative ring. Also the universal localisations of a hereditary ring, or of a finite dimensional algebra of finite representation type, can be parametrised by silting modules. In these notes, we give a brief introduction to the fairly recent concepts of silting and cosilting module, and we explain the classification results mentioned above.
There are well-known constructions relating ring epimorphisms and tilting modules. The new notion of silting module provides a wider framework for studying this interplay. To every partial silting module we associate a ring epimorphism which we describe explicitly as an idempotent quotient of the endomorphism ring of the Bongartz completion. For hereditary rings, this assignment is used to parametrise homological ring epimorphisms by silting modules. We further show that homological ring epimorphisms of a hereditary ring form a lattice which completes the poset of noncrossing partitions in the…
We study the classes of modules which are generated by a silting module. In the case of either hereditary or perfect rings it is proved that these are exactly the torsion $\mathcal{T}$ such that the regular module has a special $\mathcal{T}$-preenvelope. In particular every torsion enveloping class in $\textrm{Mod-} R$ are of the form $\mathrm{Gen}(T)$ for a minimal silting module $T$. For the dual case we obtain for general rings that the covering torsion-free classes of modules are exactly the classes of the form $\mathrm{Cogen}(T)$, where $T$ is a cosilting module.
In representation theory of algebras the notion of `mutation' often plays important roles, and two cases are well known, i.e. `cluster tilting mutation' and `exceptional mutation'. In this paper we focus on `tilting mutation', which has a disadvantage that it is often impossible, i.e. some of summands of a tilting object can not be replaced to get a new tilting object. The aim of this paper is to take away this disadvantage by introducing `silting mutation' for silting objects as a generalization of `tilting mutation'. We shall develope a basic theory of silting mutation. In particular, we int…
An important result in tilting theory states that a class of modules over a ring is a tilting class if and only if it is the Ext-orthogonal class to a set of compact modules of bounded projective dimension. Moreover, cotilting classes are precisely the resolving and definable subcategories of the module category whose Ext-orthogonal class has bounded injective dimension. In this article, we prove a derived counterpart of the statements above in the context of silting theory. Silting and cosilting complexes in the derived category of a ring generalise tilting and cotilting modules. They give ri…
We study singularity categories through Gorenstein objects in triangulated categories and silting theory. Let $ω$ be a semi-selforthogonal (or presilting) subcategory of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. We introduce the notion of $ω$-Gorenstein objects, which is far extended version of Gorenstein projective modules and Gorenstein injective modules in triangulated categories. We prove that the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{G}_ω}$, where $\mathcal{G}_ω$ is the subcategory of all $ω$-Gorenstein objects, is a triangulated category and it is, under some conditions, triangle equivalent …
We give an overview of recent developments in silting theory. After an introduction on torsion pairs in triangulated categories, we discuss and compare different notions of silting and explain the interplay with t-structures and co-t-structures. We then focus on silting and cosilting objects in a triangulated category with coproducts and study the case of the unbounded derived category of a ring. We close the survey with some classification results over commutative noetherian rings and silting-discrete algebras.
We study smashing subcategories of a triangulated category with coproducts via silting theory. Our main result states that for derived categories of dg modules over a non-positive differential graded ring, every compactly generated localising subcategory is generated by a partial silting object. In particular, every such smashing subcategory admits a silting t-structure.
A gentle algebra gives rise to a dissection of an oriented marked surface with boundary into polygons and the bounded derived category of the gentle algebra has a geometric interpretation in terms of this surface. In this paper we study silting theory in the bounded derived category of a gentle algebra in terms of its underlying surface. In particular, we show how silting mutation corresponds to the changing of graded arcs and that in some cases silting mutation results in the interpretation of the octahedral axioms in terms of the flipping of diagonals in a quadrilateral as in the work of Dyc…
We study endomorphism algebras of 2-term silting complexes in derived categories of hereditary finite dimensional algebras, or more generally of $\mathop{\rm Ext}\nolimits$-finite hereditary abelian categories. Module categories of such endomorphism algebras are known to occur as hearts of certain bounded $t$-structures in such derived categories. We show that the algebras occurring are exactly the algebras of small homological dimension, which are algebras characterized by the property that each indecomposable module either has injective dimension at most one, or it has projective dimension a…
A Jordan Hölder theorem is established for derived module categories of piecewise hereditary algebras. The resulting composition series of derived categories are shown to be independent of the choice of bounded or unbounded derived module categories, and also of the choice of finitely generated or arbitrary modules.
We call a triangulated category \emph{hereditary} provided that it is equivalent to the bounded derived category of a hereditary abelian category, where the equivalence is required to commute with the translation functors. If the triangulated category is algebraical, we may replace the equivalence by a triangle equivalence. We give two intrinsic characterizations of hereditary triangulated categories using a certain full subcategory and the non-existence of certain paths. We apply them to piecewise hereditary algebras.
We recognise Harada's generalized categories of diagrams as a particular case of modules over a monad defined on a finite direct product of additive categories. We work in the dual (albeit formally equivalent) situation, that is, with comodules over comonads. With this conceptual tool at hand, we obtain several of the Harada results with simpler proofs, some of them under more general hypothesis, besides with a characterization of the normal triangular matrix comonads that are hereditary, that is, of homological dimension less or equal than $1$. Our methods rest on a matrix representation of a…
We give bounds on the global dimension of a finite length, piecewise hereditary category in terms of quantitative connectivity properties of its graph of indecomposables. We use this to show that the global dimension of a finite dimensional, piecewise hereditary algebra A cannot exceed 3 if A is an incidence algebra of a finite poset or more generally, a sincere algebra. This bound is tight.
Following the work of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne, we study restriction and induction of t-structures in triangulated categories with respect to recollements. For derived categories of piecewise hereditary algebras we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a bounded t-structure to be induced from a recollement by derived categories of algebras. As a corollary we prove that for hereditary algebras of finite representation type all bounded t-structures can be obtained in this way.
Silting and Calabi-Yau reductions are important process in representation theory to construct new triangulated categories from given one, which are similar to Verdier quotient. In this paper, first we introduce a new reduction process of triangulated category, which is analogous to the silting (Calabi-Yau) reduction. For a triangulated category $\cal T$ with a pre-simple-minded collection (=pre-SMC) $\cal R$, we construct a new triangulated category $\cal U$ such that the SMCs in $\cal U$ bijectively correspond to those in $\cal T$ containing $\cal R$. Secondly, we give an analogue of Buchweit…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a connected hereditary abelian category with tilting objects. It is proved that the cluster-tilting graph associated with $\mathcal{H}$ is always connected. As a consequence, we establish the connectedness of the tilting graph for the category $\operatorname{coh}\mathbb{X}$ of coherent sheaves over a weighted projective line $\mathbb{X}$ of wild type. The connectedness of tilting graphs for such categories was conjectured by Happel-Unger, which has immediately applications in cluster algebras. For instance, we deduce that there is a bijection between the set of indecomposa…
Tilting theory in cluster categories of hereditary algebras has been developed in [BMRRT] and [BMR]. These results are generalized to cluster categories of hereditary abelian categories. Furthermore, for any tilting object $T$ in a hereditary abelian category $\mathcal{H}$, we verify that the tilting functor Hom$_\mathcal{H}(T,-)$ induces a triangle equivalence from the cluster category $\mathcal{C(H)}$ to the cluster category $\mathcal{C}(A)$, where $A$ is the quasi-tilted algebra End$_{\mathcal{H}}T.$ Under the condition that one of derived categories of hereditary abelian categories $\mathc…
We study IE-closed subcategories of a module category, subcategories which are closed under taking Images and Extensions. We investigate the relation between IE-closed subcategories and torsion pairs, and characterize $τ$-tilting finite algebras using IE-closed subcategories. For the hereditary case, we show that IE-closed subcategories can be classified by twin rigid modules, pairs of rigid modules satisfying some homological conditions. Moreover, we introduce mutation of twin rigid modules analogously to tilting modules, which gives a way to calculate all twin rigid modules for the represent…
We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for the hereditarity of the category algebra of an infinite EI category satisfying certain combinatorial assumptions. More generally, we discuss conditions such that the left global dimension of a category algebra equals the maximal left global dimension of the endomorphism algebras of its objects, and classify its projective modules in this case. As applications, we completely classify transporter categories, orbit categories, and Quillen categories with left hereditary category algebras over a field.
In this paper, we consider the endomorphism algebras of infinitely generated tilting modules of the form $R_{\mathcal U}\oplus R_{\mathcal U}/R$ over tame hereditary $k$-algebras $R$ with $k$ an arbitrary field, where $R_{\mathcal{U}}$ is the universal localization of $R$ at an arbitrary set $\mathcal{U}$ of simple regular $R$-modules, and show that the derived module category of $\End_R(R_{\mathcal U}\oplus R_{\mathcal U}/R)$ is a recollement of the derived module category $\D{R}$ of $R$ and the derived module category $\D{{\mathbb A}_{\mathcal{U}}}$ of the adèle ring ${\mathbb A}_{\mathcal{U…
In an arbitrary Grothendieck category, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the class of $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects to be a torsion class. By doing so, we propose a notion of $n$-hereditary categories. We also define and study the class of $\text{FP}_n$-flat objects in Grothendieck categories with a generating set of small projective objects, and provide several equivalent conditions for this class to be torsion-free. In the end, we present several applications and examples of $n$-hereditary categories in the contexts modules over a ring, chain complexes of modules and categori…
We establish a bijection between $d$-simple-minded systems ($d$-SMSs) of $(-d)$-Calabi-Yau cluster category ${\cal C_{-d}}(H)$ and silting objects of ${\cal D^{\rm b}}(H)$ contained in $\cal D^{\le 0}\cap \cal D^{\ge 1-d}$ for hereditary algebra $H$ of Dynkin type and $d\ge 1$. We show that the number of $d$-SMSs in ${\cal C_{-d}}(H)$ is the positive Fuss-Catalan number $C_{d}^{+}(W)$ of the corresponding Weyl group $W$, by applying this bijection and Buan-Reiten-Thomas' and Zhu's results on Fomin-Reading's generalized cluster complexes. Our results are based on a refined version of silting-$t…
Let R be a ring and let T be a hereditary torsion class of R-modules. The inclusion of the localizing subcategory generated by T into the derived category of R has a right adjoint, which is a colocalization. Benson has recently shown how to compute this right sdjoint when R is the group ring of a finite group over a prime field and T is the hereditary torsion class generated by a simple module. We generalize Benson's construction to the case where T is any hereditary torsion class on R. This yields an explicit formula for the colocalization with respect to T, using an injective cogenerator for…
It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categori…
Recollements of triangulated categories may be seen as exact sequences of such categories. Iterated recollements of triangulated categories are analogues of geometric or topological stratifications and of composition series of algebraic objects. We discuss the question of uniqueness of such a stratification, up to ordering and derived equivalence, for derived module categories. The main result is a positive answer in the form of a Jordan Hölder theorem for derived module categories of hereditary artin algebras. We also provide examples of derived simple rings.
Let $A$ be a hereditary algebra. We construct a fundamental domain for the cluster category of $A$ inside the category of modules over the duplicated algebra $\bar{A}$ of $A$. We then prove that there exists a bijection between the tilting objects in the cluster category and the tilting $\bar{A}$-modules all of whose non projective-injective indecomposable summands lie in the left part of the module category of $\bar{A}$.
Let A be an algebra over a field k, and denote by D^b(Mod A) the bounded derived category of left A-modules. The derived Picard group DPic_k(A) is the group of triangle auto-equivalences of D^b(Mod A) induced by tilting complexes. We study the group DPic_k(A) when A = k Δis the path algebra of a finite quiver Δ. We obtain general results on the structure of DPic_k(A), as well as explicit calculations for many cases, including all finite and tame representation types. Our method is to construct a representation of DPic_k(A) on a certain infinite quiver. This representation is faithful whenΔis a…

Derived decompositions of abelian categories are introduced in internal terms of abelian subcategories to construct semi-orthogonal decompositions (or Bousfield localizations, or hereditary torsion pairs) in various derived categories of abelian categories. We give a sufficient condition for arbitrary abelian categories to have such derived decompositions and show that it is also necessary for abelian categories with enough projectives and injectives. For bounded derived categories, we describe which semi-orthogonal decompositions are determined by derived decompositions. The necessary and suf…
