We generalize the notion of moment-angle manifold over a simple convex polytope to an arbitrary nice manifold with corners. For a nice manifold with corners Q, we first compute the stable decomposition of the moment-angle manifold Z_Q via a construction called rim-cubicalization of Q. From this, we derive a formula to compute the integral cohomology group of Z_Q via the strata of Q. This generalizes the Hochster's formula for the moment-angle manifold over a simple convex polytope. Moreover, we obtain a description of the integral cohomology ring of Z_Q using the idea of partial diagonal maps. In addition, we define the notion of polyhedral product of a sequence of based CW-complexes over Q and obtain similar results for these spaces as we do for Z_Q. Using this general construction, we can compute the equivariant cohomology ring of Z_Q with respect to its canonical torus action from the Davis-Januszkiewicz space of Q. The result leads to the definition of a new notion called the topological face ring of Q, which generalizes the notion of face ring of a simple polytope. Meanwhile, we obtain some parallel results for the real moment-angle manifold RZ_Q over Q.
Associated to any finite flag complex L there is a right-angled Coxeter group W_L and a cubical complex Σ_L on which W_L acts properly and cocompactly. Its two most salient features are that (1) the link of each vertex of Σ_L is L and (2) Σ_L is contractible. It follows that if L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}, then Σ_L is a contractible n-manifold. We describe a program for proving the Singer Conjecture (on the vanishing of the reduced L^2-homology except in the middle dimension) in the case of Σ_L where L is a triangulation of S^{n-1}. The program succeeds when n < 5. This implies the Charney…
We prove that the Stiefel-Whitney classes of a moment-angle manifold, not necessarily smooth, are trivial. We also consider Stiefel-Whitney classes of the partial quotient of a moment-angle manifold.
We construct open book structures on all moment-angle manifolds and describe the topology of their leaves and bindings under certain restrictions. II. We also show, using a recent deep result about contact forms due to Borman, Eliashberg and Murphy [6], that every odd-dimensional moment-angle manifold admits a contact structure. This contrasts with the fact that, except for a few, well-determined cases, even-dimensional ones do not admit symplectic structures. We obtain the same results for large families of more general intersections of quadrics.
In this paper we apply Donaldson's general moment map framework for the action of a symplectomorphism group on the corresponding space of compatible (almost) complex structures to the case of rational ruled surfaces. This gives a new approach to understanding the topology of their symplectomorphism groups, based on a result of independent interest: the space of compatible integrable complex structures on any symplectic rational ruled surface is (weakly) contractible. We also explain how in general, under this condition, there is a direct relationship between the topology of a symplectomorphism…
In this paper, we compute the homology coalgebra and cohomology algebra over a field of all generalized moment-angle complexes and give a duality theorem on complementary moment-angle complexes.
In this paper we give a method to construct moment-angle manifolds whose cohomologies are not torsion free. We also give method to describe the corresponding simplicial sphere by its non-faces.
We answer a problem posed by Panov, which is to describe the relationship between the wedge summands in a homotopy decomposition of the moment-angle complex corresponding to a disjoint union of k points and the connected sum factors in a diffeomorphism decomposition of the moment-angle manifold corresponding to the simple polytope obtained by making k vertex cuts on a standard d-simplex. This establishes a bridge between two very different approaches to moment-angle manifolds.
We construct open book structures on moment-angle manifolds and give a new construction of examples of contact manifolds in arbitrarily large dimensions.
This paper investigates the moment-angle manifolds whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a connected sum of sphere products. We first give a example of moment-angle manifolds corresponding to a 4 dimentional simplicial polytope. It has the property that its cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a connected sum of sphere products with one produt of thress spheres. Finally, we give some general properties of this kind of moment-angle manifolds.
We consider an operation K \to L(K) on the set of simplicial complexes, which we call the "doubling operation". This combinatorial operation has been recently brought into toric topology by the work of Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler on generalised moment-angle complexes (also known as K-powers). The crucial property of the doubling operation is that the moment-angle complex Z_K can be identified with the real moment-angle complex RZ_L(K) for the double L(K). As an application we prove the toral rank conjecture for Z_K by estimating the lower bound of the cohomology rank (with rational coef…
Fan, Chen, Ma and Wang constructed a moment-angle manifold $Z_K$ whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a connected sum of sphere products with one product of three spheres. In this paper, we show that they are actually diffeomorphic.
We construct new examples of contact manifolds in arbitrarily large dimensions. These manifolds which we call quasi moment-angle manifolds, are closely related to the classical moment-angle manifolds.
A real moment-angle complex is a CW complex defined by the combinatoric information of a simplicial complex, and has a standard action of $2$-torus. For each subtorus $G$ of $2$-torus, we describe invariants corcerning this action, the $G$-index, $G$-coindex and $G$-weight, combinatorially.
In this article, we study the cohomology ring of real moment-angle complexes over a simplicial complex $K$. Combinatorial generators for the cohomology can be given in terms of $K$. For $K$ the boundary of an $n$-gon, we give a full description of the multiplicative structure of the cohomology ring in terms of the combinatorial generators. As a consequence, it is evident that these generators do not form a symplectic basis, unlike the case for moment-angle complexes.
We use the Taylor resolution of a monomial ideal to compute the Tor algebra of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complement of a simplicial complex.
In this work we construct nontrivial Massey products in the cohomology of moment-angle manifolds corresponding to polytopes from the Pogorelov class. This class includes the dodecahedron and all fullerenes, i. e. simple 3-polytopes with only 5-gonal and 6-gonal facets. The existence of a nontrivial Massey product implies the nonformality of the space in the sense of rational homotopy theory.
In this paper we demonstrate a calculation to find the genus of the hypercube graph $Q_n$ using real moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_\mathcal{K}(D^1,S^0)$ where $\mathcal{K}$ is the boundary of an $n$-gon. We also calculate an upper bound for the genus of the quotient graph $Q_n/C_n$, where $C_n$ represents the cyclic group with $n$ elements.
In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a (real) moment-angle complex to be a topological manifold. The cup and cap products in a real moment-angle manifold are studied: the Poincaré duality via cap products is equivalent to the Alexander duality of the defining complex $K$. Consequently, the cohomology ring (with coefficients integers) of a polyhedral product by pairs of disks and their bounding spheres is isomorphic to that of a differential graded algebra associated to $K$, and the dimensions of the disks.
We give a combinatorial classification of non-trivial triple Massey products of three dimensional classes in the cohomology of a moment-angle complex. This work improves on a result by Denham and Suciu (2007) by considering triple Massey products with non-trivial indeterminacy.
Given an $\frac{n}{3}$-neighbourly simplicial complex $K$ on vertex set $[n]$, we show that the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ is a $co$-$H$-space if and only if $K$ satisfies a homotopy analogue of the Golod property.
We show that the moment-angle manifolds corresponding to complete simplicial fans admit non-Kaehler complex-analytic structures. This generalises the known construction of complex-analytic structures on polytopal moment-angle manifolds, coming from identifying them as LVM-manifolds. We proceed by describing Dolbeault cohomology and some Hodge numbers of moment-angle manifolds by applying the Borel spectral sequence to holomorphic principal bundles over toric varieties.
The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operati…
A simplicial complement P is a sequence of subsets of [m] and the simplicial complement P corresponds to a unique simplicial complex K with vertices in [m]. In this paper, we defined the homology of a simplicial complement $H_{i,σ}(Λ^{*,*}[P], d)$ over a principle ideal domain k and proved that $H_{*,*}(Λ[P], d)$ is isomorphic to the Tor of the corresponding face ring k(K) by the Taylor resolutions. As applications, we give methods to compute the ring structure of Tor_{*,*}^{k[x]}(k(K), k)$, $link_{K}σ$, $star_{K}σ$ and the cohomology of the generalized moment-angle complexes.
We compute the equivariant cohomology $H^*_{T_I}(\mathcal Z_K)$ of moment-angle complexes $\mathcal Z_K$ with respect to the action of coordinate subtori $T_I \subset T^m$. We give a criterion for the equivariant formality of $\mathcal Z_K$ and obtain specifications for the cases of flag complexes and graphs.
Two simple polytopes of dimension 3 having the identical bigraded Betti numbers but non-isomorphic Tor-algebras are presented. These polytopes provide two homotopically different moment-angle manifolds having the same bigraded Betti numbers. These two simple polytopes are the first examples of polytopes that are (toric) cohomologically rigid but not combinatorially rigid.
Associated to every finite simplicial complex K there is a "moment-angle" finite CW-complex, Z_K; if K is a triangulation of a sphere, Z_K is a smooth, compact manifold. Building on work of Buchstaber, Panov, and Baskakov, we study the cohomology ring, the homotopy groups, and the triple Massey products of a moment-angle complex, relating these topological invariants to the algebraic combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex. Applications to the study of non-formal manifolds and subspace arrangements are given.
These are notes of the lectures given during the Toric Topology Workshop at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in February 2010. We describe several approaches to moment-angle manifolds and complexes, including the intersections of quadrics, complements of subspace arrangements and level sets of moment maps. We overview the known results on the topology of moment-angle complexes, including the description of their cohomology rings, as well as the homotopy and diffeomorphism types in some particular cases. We also discuss complex-analytic structures on moment-angle manifolds…
We consider simple polytopes $P=vc^{k}(Δ^{n_{1}}\times\ldots\timesΔ^{n_{r}})$, for $n_1\ge\ldots\ge n_r\ge 1,r\ge 1,k\ge 0$, that is, $k$-vertex cuts of a product of simplices, and call them {\emph{generalized truncation polytopes}}. For these polytopes we describe the cohomology ring of the corresponding moment-angle manifold $\mathcal Z_P$ and explore some topological consequences of this calculation. We also examine minimal non-Golodness for their Stanley--Reisner rings and relate it to the property of $\mathcal Z_P$ being a connected sum of sphere products.
As part of various obstruction theories, non-trivial Massey products have been studied in symplectic and complex geometry, commutative algebra and topology for a long time. We introduce a general approach to constructing non-trivial Massey products in the cohomology of moment-angle complexes, using homotopy theoretical and combinatorial methods. Our approach sets a unifying way of constructing higher Massey products of arbitrary cohomological classes and generalises all existing examples of non-trivial Massey products in moment-angle complexes. As a result, we obtain explicit constructions of …
The moment-angle complex Z_K is cell complex with a torus action constructed from a finite simplicial complex K. When this construction is applied to a triangulated sphere K or, in particular, to the boundary of a simplicial polytope, the result is a manifold. Moment-angle manifolds and complexes are central objects in toric topology, and currently are gaining much interest in homotopy theory, complex and symplectic geometry. The geometric aspects of the theory of moment-angle complexes are the main theme of this survey. We review constructions of non-Kahler complex-analytic structures on mome…
A simple polytope $P$ is called $B$-rigid if its combinatorial type is determined by the cohomology ring of the moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ over $P$. We show that any tensor product decomposition of this cohomology ring is geometrically realized by a product decomposition of the moment-angle manifold up to equivariant diffeomorphism. As an application, we find that $B$-rigid polytopes are closed under products, generalizing some recent results in the toric topology literature. Algebraically, our proof establishes that the Koszul homology of a Gorenstein Stanley-Reisner ring admits a …
Any finite simplicial complex K and a partition of the vertex set of K determines a canonical quotient space of the moment-angle complex of K. We prove that the cohomology groups of such a space can be computed via some Hochster's type formula, which generalizes the usual Hochster's formula for the cohomology groups of moment-angle complexes. In addition, we show that the stable decomposition of moment-angle complexes can also be extended to such spaces. This type of spaces include all the quasitoric manifolds that are pullback from the linear models. And we prove that the moment-angle complex…
It could be expected that the moment-angle complex associated with a Golod simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to a suspension space. In this paper, we provide a counter example to this expectation. We have discovered this complex through the studies of the Golod property of the Alexander dual of a join of simplicial complexes, and that of a union of simplicial complexes.
For a finite simplicial complex K and a CW-pair (X,A), there is an associated CW-complex Z_K(X,A), known as a polyhedral product. We apply discrete Morse theory to a particular CW-structure on the n-sphere moment-angle complexes Z_K(D^{n}, S^{n-1}). For the class of simplicial complexes with vertex-decomposable duals, we show that the associated n-sphere moment-angle complexes have the homotopy type of wedges of spheres. As a corollary we show that a sufficiently high suspension of any restriction of a simplicial complex with vertex-decomposable dual is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of sphere…
We describe the cohomology of the quotient Z_K/H of a moment-angle complex Z_K by a freely acting subtorus H in T^m by establishing a ring isomorphism of H*(Z_K/H,R) with an appropriate Tor-algebra of the face ring R[K], with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring R with unit. This result was stated in [BP02, 7.37] for a field R, but the argument was not sufficiently detailed in the case of nontrivial H and finite characteristic. We prove the collapse of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence using the extended functoriality of Tor with respect to `strongly homotopy multipl…

In toric topology, to a simplicial complex $K$ with $m$ vertices, one associates two spaces, the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ and the Davis-Januszkiewicz space $DJ_K$. These spaces are connected by a homotopy fibration $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K\to(\mathbb{C}P^\infty)^m$. In this paper, we show that the map $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K$ is identified with a wedge of iterated (higher) Whitehead products for a certain class of simplicial complexes $K$ including dual shellable complexes. We will prove the result in a more general setting of polyhedral products.
Let $ρ:(D^2)^m\to I^m$ be the orbit map for the diagonal action of the torus $T^m$ on the unit poly-disk $(D^2)^m$, $I^m=[0,1]^m$ is the unit cube. Let $C$ be a cubical subcomplex in $I^m$. The moment-angle complex $\ma(C)$ is a $T^m$-invariant bigraded cellular decomposition of the subset $ρ^{-1}(C)\subset(D^2)^m$ with cells corresponding to the faces of $C$. Different combinatorial problems concerning cubical complexes and related combinatorial objects can be treated by studying the equivariant topology of corresponding moment-angle complexes. Here we consider moment-angle complexes defined …
We show that for any face $F$ of a simple polytope $P$ the canonical equivariant homeomorphisms $h_P:\,\mathcal Z_P\to\mathcal Z_{K_P}$ and $h_F:\,\mathcal Z_F\to\mathcal Z_{K_F}$ are linked in a pentagonal commutative diagram with the maps of moment-angle manifolds and moment-angle-complexes, induced by a face embedding $i_{F,P}:\,F\to P$ and a simplicial embedding $Φ_{F,P}:\,K_F\to K_{F,P}\to K_P$, where $K_{F,P}$ is the full subcomplex of $K_P$ on the same vertex set as $Φ_{F,P}(K_F)$. We introduce the explicit constructions of the maps $i_{F,P}$, $Φ_{F,P}$ and show that a polytope $P$ is f…
We extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets by associating a certain T^m-space Z_S to an arbitrary simplicial poset S on m vertices. Face rings Z[S] of simplicial posets generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen--Macaulay rings. Our primary motivation is to study the face rings Z[S] by topological methods. The space Z_S has many important topological properties of the original moment-angle complex Z_K associated to a simplicial complex K. In particular, we prove that the integral cohomology algebra of Z_S is iso…
In this paper we study the topological structure of moment-angle complexes $\mathcal{Z_K}$. We consider two classes of simplicial complexes. The first class $B_Δ$ consists of simplicial complexes $\mathcal{K}$ for which $\mathcal{Z_K}$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge spheres. The second class $W_Δ$ consists of $\mathcal{K}\in B_Δ$ such that all spheres in the wedge are realized by iterated higher Whitehead products. Buchstaber and Panov asked if it is true that $B_Δ = W_Δ$. In this paper we show that this is not the case. Namely, we give an example of a simplicial complex whose corresponding…
This note announces recent exciting progress on the frontier between algebraic topology and probability theory. It is intended for a journal which publishes such announcements (without an abstract, typically in Russian). A description of a larger work in progress is included in the concluding remarks.
We consider the problem of describing the Pontryagin algebra (loop homology) of moment-angle complexes and manifolds. The moment-angle complex Z_K is a cell complex built of products of polydiscs and tori parametrised by simplices in a finite simplicial complex K. It has a natural torus action and plays an important role in toric topology. In the case when K is a triangulation of a sphere, Z_K is a topological manifold, which has interesting geometric structures. Generators of the Pontryagin algebra H_*(ΩZ_K) when K is a flag complex have been described in the work of Grbic, Panov, Theriault a…
We construct a family of manifolds, one for each $n\geq 2$, having a nontrivial Massey $n$-product in their cohomology. These manifolds turn out to be smooth closed 2-connected manifolds with a compact torus action called moment-angle manifolds $\mathcal Z_P$, whose orbit spaces are simple $n$-dimensional polytopes $P$ obtained from a $n$-cube by a sequence of truncations of faces of codimension 2 only (2-truncated cubes). Moreover, the polytopes $P$ are flag nestohedra but not graph-associahedra. We compute some bigraded Betti numbers $β^{-i,2(i+1)}(Q)$ for an associahedron $Q$ in terms of it…
We study the homotopy types of moment-angle complexes, or equivalently, of complements of coordinate subspace arrangements. The overall aim is to identify the simplicial complexes K for which the corresponding moment-angle complex Z_K has the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres or a connected sum of sphere products. When K is flag, we identify in algebraic and combinatorial terms those K for which Z_K is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, and give a combinatorial formula for the number of spheres in the wedge. This extends results of Berglund and Joellenbeck on Golod rings and homotopy…
We study the topology of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds N in C^m constructed from intersections of real quadrics in a work of the first author. This construction is linked via an embedding criterion to the well-known Delzant construction of Hamiltonian toric manifolds. We establish the following topological properties of N: every N embeds as a submanifold in the corresponding moment-angle manifold Z, and every N is the total space of two different fibrations, one over the torus T^{m-n} with fibre a real moment-angle manifold R, and another over a quotient of R by a finite group wi…
Using the combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex $K$, we give various upper and lower bounds for the Lusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$. We describe families of simplicial complexes and combinatorial operations which allow for a systematic description of the LS category. In particular, we characterise the LS category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$ over triangulated $d$-manifolds $K$ for $d\leq 2$, as well as higher dimension spheres built up via connected sum, join, and vertex doubling operations. %This characterisation is given in terms of the co…
