This note announces recent exciting progress on the frontier between algebraic topology and probability theory. It is intended for a journal which publishes such announcements (without an abstract, typically in Russian). A description of a larger work in progress is included in the concluding remarks.
Two simple polytopes of dimension 3 having the identical bigraded Betti numbers but non-isomorphic Tor-algebras are presented. These polytopes provide two homotopically different moment-angle manifolds having the same bigraded Betti numbers. These two simple polytopes are the first examples of polytopes that are (toric) cohomologically rigid but not combinatorially rigid.
The bigraded Betti numbers b^{-i,2j}(P) of a simple polytope P are the dimensions of the bigraded components of the Tor groups of the face ring k[P]. The numbers b^{-i,2j}(P) reflect the combinatorial structure of P as well as the topology of the corresponding moment-angle manifold \mathcal Z_P, and therefore they find numerous applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and toric topology. Here we calculate some bigraded Betti numbers of the type β^{-i,2(i+1)} for associahedra, and relate the calculation of the bigraded Betti numbers for truncation polytopes to the topology of their mom…
It has been shown that $1$-parameter persistence modules have a very simple classification, namely there is a discrete invariant called a barcode that completely characterizes $1$-parameter persistence modules up to isomorphism. In contrast, Carlsson and Zomorodian showed that $n$-parameter persistence modules have no such "nice" classification when $n>1$; every discrete invariant is incomplete. Despite their incompleteness, discrete invariants can still provide insight into the properties of multiparameter persistence modules. A well-studied discrete invariant for $2$-parameter persistence mo…
Motivated by applications to topological data analysis, we give an efficient algorithm for computing a (minimal) presentation of a bigraded $K[x,y]$-module $M$, where $K$ is a field. The algorithm takes as input a short chain complex of free modules $X\xrightarrow{f} Y \xrightarrow{g} Z$ such that $M\cong \ker{g}/\mathrm{im}{f}$. It runs in time $O(|X|^3+|Y|^3+|Z|^3)$ and requires $O(|X|^2+|Y|^2+|Z|^2)$ memory, where $|\cdot |$ denotes the rank. Given the presentation computed by our algorithm, the bigraded Betti numbers of $M$ are readily computed. Our approach is based on a simple matrix red…

Buchstaber invariant is a numerical characteristic of a simplicial complex, arising from torus actions on moment-angle complexes. In the paper we study the relation between Buchstaber invariants and classical invariants of simplicial complexes such as bigraded Betti numbers and chromatic invariants. The following two statements are proved. (1) There exists a simplicial complex U with different real and ordinary Buchstaber invariants. (2) There exist two simplicial complexes with equal bigraded Betti numbers and chromatic numbers, but different Buchstaber invariants. To prove the first theorem …
Betti numbers of configuration spaces of mechanical linkages (known also as polygon spaces) depend on a large number of parameters -- the lengths of the bars of the linkage. Motivated by applications in topological robotics, statistical shape theory and molecular biology, we view these lengths as random variables and study asymptotic values of the average Betti numbers as the number of links n tends to infinity. We establish a surprising fact that for a reasonably ample class of sequences of probability measures the asymptotic values of the average Betti numbers are independent of the choice o…
Let $ρ:(D^2)^m\to I^m$ be the orbit map for the diagonal action of the torus $T^m$ on the unit poly-disk $(D^2)^m$, $I^m=[0,1]^m$ is the unit cube. Let $C$ be a cubical subcomplex in $I^m$. The moment-angle complex $\ma(C)$ is a $T^m$-invariant bigraded cellular decomposition of the subset $ρ^{-1}(C)\subset(D^2)^m$ with cells corresponding to the faces of $C$. Different combinatorial problems concerning cubical complexes and related combinatorial objects can be treated by studying the equivariant topology of corresponding moment-angle complexes. Here we consider moment-angle complexes defined …
We construct a family of manifolds, one for each $n\geq 2$, having a nontrivial Massey $n$-product in their cohomology. These manifolds turn out to be smooth closed 2-connected manifolds with a compact torus action called moment-angle manifolds $\mathcal Z_P$, whose orbit spaces are simple $n$-dimensional polytopes $P$ obtained from a $n$-cube by a sequence of truncations of faces of codimension 2 only (2-truncated cubes). Moreover, the polytopes $P$ are flag nestohedra but not graph-associahedra. We compute some bigraded Betti numbers $β^{-i,2(i+1)}(Q)$ for an associahedron $Q$ in terms of it…
The paper surveys some new results and open problems connected with such fundamental combinatorial concepts as polytopes, simplicial complexes, cubical complexes, and subspace arrangements. Particular attention is paid to the case of simplicial and cubical subdivisions of manifolds and, especially, spheres. We describe important constructions which allow to study all these combinatorial objects by means of methods of commutative and homological algebra. The proposed approach to combinatorial problems relies on the theory of moment-angle complexes, currently being developed by the authors. The …
In this paper, we give an algebra-combinatorics formula of the Möbius transform for an abstract simplicial complex $K$ on $[m]=\{1, ..., m\}$ in terms of the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner face ring of $K$. Furthermore, we employ a way of compressing $K$ to estimate the lower bound of the sum of those Betti numbers by using this formula. As an application, associating with the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ (resp. real moment-angle complex ${\Bbb R}\mathcal{Z}_K$) of $K$, we show that the Halperin-Carlsson conjecture holds for $\mathcal{Z}_K$ (resp. ${\Bbb R}\mathcal{Z}_K$) under t…
In this paper we study a new combinatorial invariant of simple polytopes, which comes from toric topology. With each simple n-polytope P with m facets we can associate a moment-angle complex Z_P with a canonical action of the torus T^m. Then s(P) is the maximal dimension of a toric subgroup that acts freely on Z_P. The problem stated by Victor M. Buchstaber is to find a simple combinatorial description of an s-number. We describe the main properties of s(P) and study the properties of simple n-polytopes with n+3 facets. In particular, we find the value of an s-number for such polytopes, a simp…
We apply tools from topological data analysis to two mathematical models inspired by biological aggregations such as bird flocks, fish schools, and insect swarms. Our data consists of numerical simulation output from the models of Vicsek and D'Orsogna. These models are dynamical systems describing the movement of agents who interact via alignment, attraction, and/or repulsion. Each simulation time frame is a point cloud in position-velocity space. We analyze the topological structure of these point clouds, interpreting the persistent homology by calculating the first few Betti numbers. These B…
Given a Poisson process on a $d$-dimensional torus, its random geometric simplicial complex is the complex whose vertices are the points of the Poisson process and simplices are given by the uCech complex associated to the coverage of each point. By means of Malliavin calculus, we compute explicitly the n$th$ order moment of the number of $k$-simplices. The two first order moments of this quantity allow us to find the mean and the variance of the Euler caracteristic. Also, we show that the number of any connected geometric simplicial complex converges to the Gaussian law when the intensity of …
We extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets by associating a certain T^m-space Z_S to an arbitrary simplicial poset S on m vertices. Face rings Z[S] of simplicial posets generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen--Macaulay rings. Our primary motivation is to study the face rings Z[S] by topological methods. The space Z_S has many important topological properties of the original moment-angle complex Z_K associated to a simplicial complex K. In particular, we prove that the integral cohomology algebra of Z_S is iso…
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the s…
We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingredient is t…
We prove that certain conditions on multigraded Betti numbers of a simplicial complex $K$ imply existence of a higher Massey product in cohomology of a moment-angle-complex $\mathcal Z_K$, which contains a unique element (a strictly defined product). Using the simplicial multiwedge construction, we find a family $\mathcal{F}$ of polyhedral products being smooth closed manifolds such that for any $l,r\geq 2$ there exists an $l$-connected manifold $M\in\mathcal F$ with a nontrivial strictly defined $r$-fold Massey product in $H^{*}(M)$. As an application to homological algebra, we determine a wi…
